My name is Max Tyco. I will become the most powerful Guardian in the Universe. This is my story.
Max Tyco is a truck driver on the road more days than he's home. Events are about to transpire that will lead this everyday Joe on an adventure of a lifetime. Things like traveling through space, starships, alien monsters, and blasters have all been daydreams, until now.
The Rowki is a fraternity of intergalactic guardians tasked with keeping the balance between the light and the darkness. A call for help from the oldest galaxy in the universe and the central planet in that galaxy will uncover an ancient secret that could mean the end of the universe as we know it.
Chosen for the depth of his potential, Max will have to commit to the Rowki or decide to go back home and forget he ever knew the truth. But the truth is out there and more horrifying than he could ever expect.
I'm Jonathan, a husband, father, and writer. I write because that's what I was born to do and I love doing it. Because of the support from awesome people like you, I get to do it full-time.
Another great start to a military science fiction series. Yanez is a pillar in the sci-fi genre.
Great action, fast pacing, and Character work make this story shine. The main character is a blue-collar truck driver who has recently lost his wife. He is thrust into a job as a Rowki (an intergalactic fighting force) I loved the redemption arch for Max.
Loved the battle scenes and the various alien species. I am looking forward to furthering world-building and character work from the author
It was great making some new friends. Meeting Max and Tem, Time ,Ego and Captain Akel. This book is exciting. I am so looking forward to the next installment, well book in this adventure!! Come and join in. You won't regret it!!!
The first installment in the Galactic Guardians series doesn’t disappoint. Meet Max Tyco who was your ordinary truck driver turned into a great guardian! Max’s character is a complex character who has flaws and makes him relatable. I really enjoyed how the author created some transitions to help guide the reader along with the new universe Max has been taken to. There are several great lines and scenes that made me laugh out loud. I never expected to see some humor in this book and I loved it! It had the right amounts. Great well rounded characters that make you want to join the guardians just to be surrounded by them. I especially loved Remi and Max’s banter. They had me laughing. Jeffrey Kafer was great at portraying Max and the secondary characters. The variation of tones and inflections throughout the book were great! It was easy to visualize the scenes and action. I would recommend this book if you enjoy reading sci-fi or even if your new to this genre. It’s a great and fun introduction to this genre. It totally gave me some Terminator vibes. Loved it!
Although the plot of this book is an old troupe, it is effective. Out of all the inhabitants of the universe the High Council chooses a down and out long-haul trucker to be the next Rowki, the Galactic Guardians. The Rowki are an ancient order of warriors some of whom can bond telekinetically with a rare metal that can be merged with their weapons. The Last Starfighter meets Star Wars meets Guardians of the Galaxy. I recommend this book.
I rarely go in for sci-fi, so this book was a bit of a risk for me. I’m glad I took the risk. Max Tyco is the perfect amount of buffoon and Everyman to make him relatable to the reader, and his adventures were easy to visualize. His fallibility, especially the alcoholic tendencies kept him personal.
This story had elements of HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE, DUNE, and STARSHIP TROOPERS. A fun reader for anyone who likes sci-fi or just action adventure.
The book was decent. I thought the characters (mostly) were interesting (Tem, primarily). The story was ok. The writing was easy to read. There were some fun moments and references. Both the writing and the humor could be hammy and juvenile at times which kind of detracted from the story, and it was a bit tropey. I don’t really have strong feelings about it one way or the other.
I'm always a sucker for the Super Hero type story and here is a series that is very easy to read. Find the super weapon, get trained in it's use and get fit. It's very typical and written with good humor. Comparing to other books is not allowed so you, the new reader will just have to believe the score!
Even though parts of this book are unbelieveable ( getting proficient with a staff in 10 days not to mention vast improvement in physical health in same time frame) this was a fun book to read
Okay, you won me over. Legend Rising is a great story! The blurb about a truck driver becoming a Galactic Guardian caught my attention immediately as something rather unique. Max Tyco is funny without being ridiculous, Tem the historian is sweet and entertaining, and warrior woman extraordinaire Rima is awesome. Plenty of action. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can hardly wait for volume two!
I love his books and this one is no different, the changes the character goes through while keeping to his core, will it survive or will it change as well. I can’t wait to read the next book:)
The premise is good, the description was interesting, but the actually story delivery was juvenile. No, not as in “for young adults” but as in “childish and unbelievable.” I do enjoy a good story with a lovable underdog hero - that’s what the description promised but not quite the story which was delivered. Character development is acceptable, but the tech and science leave much to be desired. Aliens are described in Disneyesque animated styles, and their behaviors are similarly constrained by human styles and responses. I made it as far as the first mission battle and realized from that series of conflicts that there were no hard rules and reality and science would take a backseat to imagination and fancy. It was enough for me and I quit.
If you enjoy Disney and other feature cartoons or animated stories, then you might enjoy this.
Strong attempt at humor makes protagonist a reluctantly likable hero. Trite premise is worked well, obligatory friends, enemies, companions, and other cliches encountered at predictable intervals.
I dived into this book series based on the blurb on book one, Legend Rising, in this series. It is a kind of story that I like, if it is well done.
I have to admit that I almost dumped the series after this first book. The entire book series is a mix of fantasy and science fiction but it is very light on the science part and the first book was really borderline young adult. The way the story was written and how things played out was just too implausible. Picking up some gray haired old truck driver, train him and then go kick butts in the matter of a couple of weeks. Nah, don’t think so.
The only reason I didn’t dump the series was because I liked the main protagonist as well as quite a few of the other characters and I kind of got hooked on the main story enough that I wanted to know the rest of the story bad enough that I went for the second book as well.
The first book is a two star one. No way around that but books two and three I could bring myself to give three stars.
It is light reading. The story is more of a swashbuckling adventure than a regular science fiction story and that is what kept me reading. As I wrote I quite like the story. If you are looking for regular science fiction do not bother with this series but if you can live with giant bears swinging huge axes that also shoots laser bolts, a dose of Jedi style magic, a healthy dose of butt-kicking and some good old-fashioned hero-making then you might like this book series.
Max Tyco meets all kinds of characters during his journey, some of which he befriends, some trying to kill him and some just weird. All along he grows as a Galactic Guardian. Sometimes the story becomes a bit silly but it is never boring and overall it was fun reading.
I did like it and I read all three books in a bit less than a week. There’s a fourth coming and I have to say that I am a bit eager to read it given the developments in the third book.
Disclaimer: I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This book has a lot of things going on for it. The worldbuilding is fantastic. I love the descriptions of characters and the worlds around them. The creatures are really cool. At times, it is definitely even laugh out loud funny.
My favorite thing about this book is that it is ultimately the story of redemption for a man who had let himself go really bad after a tragic thing happened to him. I'm trying to keep this spoiler free, so I will not go into any more details about said tragedy. Watching him lose weight, gain muscle, and get confidence was really great. Even the way he deals with letting go of some of the trauma is cool.
The downside is that the character also seems a little brotastic. There are things about him that just rub me the wrong way. I can't really put my finger on what exactly bothers me about him. Perhaps it is that it reads a little as accidental super hero stuff, and that is not my bag.
For people who like superhero movies, I think this book would be a 5 star read. Since it is a series, I was hoping for a little more sci-fi and character development with a little less action. Overall, this is a strong read, and I definitely recommend it.
Could just as well rated it 2*. Its like a comic book in audio form. All the scify cliches included and not childish but plenty teenager-ish. Hinted at some mystery that had me wanting more so i finished it, but since none of the wider questions answered was left disappointed. And don't want to continue due to suspecting author will just draw it out*** & have the same old pay off done better in other stories. minor spoilers Biggest neg: MC is a truck driver shanghaied to be a scify soldier. They take the truck along when they abduct him for unspecified reason. I shit you not the MC asks the truck to be dropped along on a alien planet he is sent on a mission to. Especially comical as the truck was not actually used/mentioned after. ***=plot spends pages on things like aliens being introduced pizza & redbull by the MC. In the "humanity's is the only culture with such things" trope, goes exactly like i suspect you can predict. It was just boring filler.
Max Tyco is kidnapped from the planet earth, his has been chosen to be a Rowki. The Rowki are a group that are tasked with making sure balance is kept through out the universe. Max will have to decide for himself if he wants to go home and rejoin his old life as a truck driver or stay and help keep the universe safe. I loved this audio narrated by Jeffrey Kafer as he does a outstanding job. In this book you not only get the sci-fi aspect but you also get part of our own time and world, especially as Max introduces the others to earth things like Red Bull, Pizza, and toilet paper (no we really don’t use the three shells). This was such a good book with wonderful characters, it grabbed my interest from the start and didn’t let go. I can’t wait to find out what this ragtag group gets to next.
"First, I couldn't finish this book. I got part way through the first mission (about 3 hours in) and had to stop before I injured my brain by listening to the stupid. I can see where the author was trying to go with the MC. The MC was supposed to be an underdog, everyman with previous tragedy in his life. Someone, that readers and listeners could relate to, and cheer for. While the previous tragedy does draw out some sympathy, it is not enough to overcome the illogical stupidity of the story."
Another review sums it up nicely, but to add this total mess. The MC is way too accepting of his situation and not pushing back against arrogant aliens. The training is a joke, the trainer is a freaking joke. She should have been fired from her job and even let a totally untrained person on the battlefield with a goddamn club.
Rank B Personal Tags: (Popcorn Read, Space, Special Agent, Adventure) This was a fun, fast-paced sci-fi story with a classic space adventure vibe. The action keeps things moving and makes it an easy book to pick up and keep reading. I enjoyed the team dynamic and how the characters played off each other. That said, some of the characters felt a little underdeveloped, and while the worldbuilding is interesting enough, I do wish more of those ideas had been explored in depth. At times, the story sticks pretty close to familiar sci-fi tropes. It doesn’t do much to reinvent the genre. Still, it knows what it wants to be and leans into it. It’s a decent first book in the series, and I am looking forward to seeing how the rest of the series develops.
Simple and fun space adventure, but pretty generic in a lot of ways. We have this "truck driver" who is wallowing in pity and is "somehow" chosen to be an intergalactic guardian. They don't give lots of details as to why it is him, except for the fact that he has finally determined (for himself) that he is able to die doing something good.
The idea of the galactic police is not new, but it is well done in this book with ideas of the police disappearing and other challenges. The stories are alright, it wasn't the strongest writing but I didn't hate it either, just a pretty generic story of an unexpected hero who turns out to be stronger then the rest.

Max Tyco, an independent trucker, in a small truck stop in New Mexico getting coffee, walks in on a robbery. The young cashier is stuffing cash into a coffee pot! A crazy guy saving a pistol at the kid spouting crazy talk. Max is taken aback as he's also become a victim! When the robber wants his wedding ring Max twist off ,the weapon miss fires and Max takes him Down. Thus starts His journey to become a Guardian. A really great reading adventure with a cast that easy to believe in. EXCELLENT WORK!!!!
Really fun world setting book. Any time you have to create a whole new universe a lot of backstory has to take place. In this instance it's done well and not over the top. My only real complaint is the lack of descriptions of some things like the main character. We get snippets here and there but otherwise we need to really use our imagination and create someone, or think about the cover art.
I definitely recommend this book if you like stories about average people being thrown into extraordinary situations and excelling... and aliens.
This has a Last Starfighter starting point. That kind of story needs a reason for a primitive human to be involved. This never bothers with it. It tries to play a reluctant hero trope, but there is no proper reason for forcing the MC to be that hero. The characters are okay but not creative our original, they are very typecast. The overall set up for the arching story is very, very weak. This is just a compilation of several tropes badly put together.
I FOUND IT HARD TO GET BEHIND THE MC IN THIS NOVEL. HE IS A CRYBABY AND EMOTIONALLY WEAK! I PERSONALLY HAVE.LOST LOVE ONES I CARED ABOUT, BUT THIS GUY'S WHINING AND CRYING WAS A LITTLE HARD TO STOMACH AT TIMES. I ENJOYED THE OTHERS AROUND HIM MORE THEN I DID GETTING TO KNOW HIM. BUT I WILL TRY THE NEXT.ONE AND SEE IF HIS CHARACTER IMPROVES ARE STAYS THE SAME! WE SHALL SEE!
So far I found this first book very interesting. I enjoyed the story, plenty of action, intriguing cast of characters. The book progressed at a very fast paced. Found the main character likable. Of course he’s not much of a legend as of yet, we will see how the story progresses. Going on to read the next book, you might find it enjoyable.
This works out really well as a first in series as the actual pace is quite well blended with characters development and action whilst giving us more of the story. Love the idea of the truck being his portable home especially carrying earth supplies into the galaxy.
An alien abduction with a twist. A central character who is in the throes of grieving and survivor guilt. A galactic government and a bunch of splinter factions. As humans we hope there are some universal truths and values. Our fiction reveals our hope for the future. First in a series.
I'm not super big into the space opera genre. But this was really good. I'm actually looking forward to the next one. I love that Max is a reluctant fighter with a tragic past. He's very believable. For a book with no magic or wizards I can't wait for the next one!!
