After a bad year stuck at a job she hated, feeling less and less fulfilled each day, Maribelle decided to pack up her life and head back to the place she remembered feeling the happiest. The cabin where she spent her summers with her grandmother when she was still alive.

A place full of folklore about the creatures who lived in the woods, stories Maribelle always thought were the silly, superstitious ramblings from an old lady.

It turns out there were creatures.

And one of them had set his sights on her.

*2.5* This story was a whole lot of meh. Great ideas, and set up, but overall needed so much more.

Grandmother gives granddaughter cottage in the woods. Granddaughter has self-esteem issues and decides to work on herself while living in the cabin. She's chased one day by a giant wolf who morphs into a man as he leaps on her. He's found his lifemate, now he needs to convince her.

Not my usual go to genre but surprisingly enough I enjoyed it, wished it was longer so I could connect with his character more. Quick, short read, and it cemented reasons why this author can write anything she sets her mind to.
Hoping we get more from this world she’s created because now that I’ve stepped into it I want to stay in it longer.

This is your typical shifter romance story–but it has definite Little Red Riding hood vibes that I loved. It’s fairly straightforward, but the author packs a lot of plot and romance into a novella! I do wish it had been longer, because I would have loved to have gotten lost in this world. I love this author’s full length books, and I wish this one had gotten more words!

I want a whole book on this couple

It’s a hard feat for a novella to satisfy my need for three things: the story, the characters, and the relationships. This one hit all three and did them well.

I loved Maribelle and Way. Despite it being instalove, it was natural and cute and real. Maribelle felt like a real person, the way she talked, her actions, her insecurities, everything. And Way was such a gentleman who knew what he wanted and didn’t fight it.

Super disappointed it was so quick (even though everything wrapped up well) because I really wanted to keep diving into this story. I want to read about the rest of the pack, about the life out in the woods, future kids…Really happy I picked up this book and can’t wait to read more by Jessica Gadziala.

Maribelle only wanted to escape to the one place that made her life better. The cabin in the woods where she would spend time with her grandmother when she was a child. She knew the stories, the tales her grandmother used to tell her about the creatures in the woods, but she never believed them. Until one interaction with a wolf turned man changed the way Maribelle saw everything.

Maribelle and Waylon's story was short but surprisingly impactful. I wanted more. There was plenty of heat, all the feels that comes with fated mates and some light banter that rounded out this short story. I just hope this is the start of a series because I would like to see the Alpha of Way's pack as well as his best friend find their mates too.

Absolutely amazing! Jessica Gadziala has now given us a shifter book and it was glorious! I loved everything about it well… except the length I knew I wanted this book to be longer before I ended chapter one. I can’t wait to see if she keeps this series going because I have a huge interest in some of the other characters and would love to see them find their mates!

3.3 stars.
Way sweeter than I was expecting.
Also a lot less smutty, and kinky than I was expecting.
The smut was still good, and there was that tiny, itty bitty, hint of primal play at the beginning…though it was much more real than an actual kinky playtime because he was, you know, a wolf. 😂
Still.
It was short.
It was relatively simple.
The time line moves really fast but in a way that still mostly made sense, I think.
The sex was hot, though it felt sort of disconnected at times because of the lack of details in some places.

I liked it, though.
It wasn’t what I went in expecting, but it was still pretty good.

My primal instinct was to read this new potentially dangerous new series in the interest of self-gratification of a good shifter romance. . I was not disappointed. :)

I'm used to Jessica being able to keep coming up with a stories that shows me why I love her books so much.

This is a hot paranormal romance story that proves once again that she can write in any genre she wants.

The only thing I didn't like about the story was the length of the book 😂
It's a short story (88 pages) and I hope there will be more to come later, because I loved every single page of this amazing shifter scorching hot story.

It's an awesome beginning to an absolute addictive page-turner series. I hope it'll be a series 🤨😂

Normally I really like books written by author Jessica Gadziala like Faire l'amour or Grudge Match.

Primal dragged, and I couldn't like the heroine. She constantly talks about how depressed she was in the city with her boring job so she ate and ate and gained 50 pounds.

She hadn't visited her grandmother in years but wrote her letters. Now she is cleaning out her grandma's house and staying awhile to figure out her life.

The hero is werewolf and thinks she is his True Mate. So he starts hanging around and helping her with things like chopping wood.

I was bored and gave up about halfway through, even though the book was less than 100 pages.

Expected better

For the first 60% the book dragged, then it's basically sex for the rest. I just really expected more or something to happen to make it interesting.

3.5. It was good. I should start out by saying I’m a big fan of Jessica’s books, characters and basically all of her series. She excels at them where many don’t. Leaving you wanting more and repeatedly checking while anxiously waiting for the next even though you aren’t left standing on a cliff.(Especially NB and ALL of the spin offs & cross overs ♥️ which are mostly MC, mafia, vigilante, etc. but I am also a fan of PNR and have loved reading those series as well ~ not always so patiently waiting for more or a continuation: *green hint 😉 *) That being said, my expectations are high. This one did not suck me in immediately as most do and although even a short book it took longer for me to connect. But by the end. I did. I felt that flow. Considering it’s a completely new series and newer genre, I think part was due to lack of the familiarity we often encounter reading her books and then being informed it’s a series not a standalone. A background that didn’t exist to set the stage for the future ~ I get it. And it’s rather impressive having a novella coming together quickly enough & leaving you wanting more. And for someone that wasn’t sure, by the end…
I do. Want more 😊

Uh… this was mostly just “okay”, but became increasingly boring towards the end (I skimmed the last 10-15%).

It’s just not what I wanted, and based on the title, sample/excerpt, and length of the story… not at all what I expected. I thought I’d be jumping into some super-smutty goodness, with dominant possessiveness, make-me-shiver growly, primal, rough sex, with knotting, scent marking, a mating bite, etc. (or some combination thereof).

But what I got instead was a sweet (with a touch of angst) beginner’s 101 guide to bland werewolves, with a few brief, pedestrian sex scenes and a rushed, boring ending.

I am annoyed. :(

Primal is a short, quick read about true mates finding their happily ever after.

Both Waylon and Maribelle are good and likeable characters, and it's a sweet story. The problem with novellas are they always leave you wanting more. I wanted to get to know the other side characters and see more interaction with Mari and Way and his pack. I'd love to see either Elden (the alpha) or Garrick (Way's best friend) get a story too.

Primal is a fun, intense shifter novella from Jessica Gadziala which is new for all of us!

I love shifter books, and Jessica wrote this as though she's been writing Were books for the last 15 years!

Maribelle acts as though this is her first trip through the forest, even though she keeps repeating her grandmother's oft repeated tidbits of safety and what not to do - even as she's blindly disobeying most of these safety tidbits. I was amazed a wild animal didn't get her before the shifter, Waylon, found her, as she completely ignored her grandmother's instructions to "never be alone in the forest at night."

Waylon scented Maribelle out, and all he could think, over and again, was "Mine!" Even as he kissed her and she acquiesced- rather than scratch and push against him, she found herself writhing closer and closer to the heady sensations every time the scruffy, dark man said "mine."

Later that day Maribelle is left wondering what in the heck happened, did she fall and hit her head? Maybe she had a concussion, surely she wouldn't just let a man - but wasn't he a wolf just seconds before that? Maybe his wolf transfixed her, is that how it worked?

When Waylon takes a little sabbatical, and goes to find the woman he already thinks of as his, he runs into a slight problem. She's staying somewhere she really shouldn't be, if he and his pack are going to be safe, maybe he has to cut off all contact. He can't even think of this, it makes him physically sick. He can't stand the thought of being away from her forever, and Maribelle misses him like no one else she's ever spent time with. How do they get around this? Sure enough their contact gets closer and closer, y'all OMW, they're so hot I could've combusted!!

When Waylon's pack confronts him, he makes excuses for Maribelle that he can't really know yet, but what he does know is that he can't be bear to separated from her and surely she wouldn't be involved in what went down so many years ago?

Waylon's pack has me convinced that Jessica could successfully branch out and write an entire Were/Shifter series based on these interesting, sexy side characters probably starting with the Pack Alpha. I have so many questions for him!! Did he push Maribelle's family into causing problems for the last pack Alpha, or was she as dangerous as they were all told?

If you enjoy Shifter Romance, and you've read anything by Jessica Gadziala, I'd encourage you to hurry and pick up this novella! As always, she is definitely capable of writing a full story in so short of a space, and doesnt leave you wanting, except for more in a full series!!

More fluffy filler than thriller. That's what this author writes, filler. A basic plot, told in every werewolf book, but with no actual story. There's literally nothing here, nothing exciting or gripping. it's all just boring, unimportant filler. As well as a mass of typos, missing letters, missing words, wrong words, wrong tenses, and terrible sentence structure.

It's extremely repetitive, the author has the reader reading the hero thinking about the pack, how they have no true mates, that they need to meet their true mate to continue the next generation etc, then in the same scene just a page on she has him thinking again about it again, the pack, how they have no true mates, that they need to meet their true mate to continue the next generation, etc, forcing the reader to tediously have to read it again. Then she writes it a third time

The author uses a limited vocabulary. She uses the same words repeatedly, even within the same scene, like these examples taken from the book, "I grabbed her... I grabbed her hips... I grabbed her ankle..". It makes this even more of a repetitive and boring read. But it was the nothingness of the story that made this pointless reading.

It's literally- she moves to a cabin in the woods, goes for a walk, sees a wolf that chages to a man, thinks she hit her head, but he shows up at her cabin, they get it on, she acts like she didn't know what he was, blames him for lying about it, then immediately they get together again, she mets his family, the end. That's it! That's the story.

Nothing but a basic premise, a pointless second of angst based on her stupidly pretending she didn't know he was a shifter, even though she'd seen him shift, repetition and unimportant filler and fluff dragged out. A nothing of a story. There was literally no point in this being published, it made for a pointless waste of time read.

I have to say I read this because after reading this author's book Crow published in 2022 and Slash 2023, which I read yesterday, I thought they were too similar to the wattpad author's stories from 2018, too much to be a coincidence. Now the Alpha here is similar to the Alpha in that wattpad author's shifter story and has identical plot points, including the mention of gemstones and quilts.

This is a different story because there isn't actually a story here at all, ibut with how very similar the characters and stories in this author's Crow and Slash are to the wattpad author's stories, I thought I should mention even the similarities here. Basic, a nothing of a story and honesty a waste of time to read.

This was a good read. Being relatively new to Paranormal Romance, I thought it was a great introduction to both it and the sub-category of Shifter romance. It wasn’t too heavy in lore that would make it difficult to follow for a less-versed reader. There was good tension between the main characters and enough depth to allow for reader relatability. There was well-written humor and the steamier scenes were enough to whet the appetite. On the technical side of Primal, there are a few grammatical errors and a POV mix up or two that resulted in me having to refer back to the chapter beginning to aid in clarification on who was saying and/or doing what but even so, they did not detract from the enjoyment of this novella. Overall, I enjoyed Primal and look forward to reading more of her work in this genre as there is definitely potential to create some wonderful worlds with her words.

Primal

This was a delightful story. I love most things by this author - bikers, Mafia, and demons. I would love to see her do more shifter stuff but I'll read anything she writes.

Some of my favorite lines,

“There’s nothing wrong with leaning on someone else’s strengths so you have the time and freedom to lean into your own.”

We do not have to be good at everything. Why not run more with one's strengths than always trying to build up weaknesses?

Weight positive,

“And why I put on fifty pounds,” she grumbled, mostly to herself. “All the misery weight.”
“Well, maybe you can find some joy here and keep those pounds on as happy weight.”

Followed by this,

“For the record, you’re fucking perfect. And any second you spend thinking otherwise is a waste of precious fucking time.”

I'm not seeing any other books in this world but I'll cross my fingers.

I’ve become increasingly disappointed with JG’s latest releases but I just had to give this one a shot because… shifters 😩

But holy hell, I was rolling my eyes so hard in the first chapter. Maybe it gets better but I just couldn't even continue. I understand that this is a novella so things need to move quickly, but that doesn't mean it's okay for Just so unrealistic.

A Howler!

I’ve always loved Shifter stories and totally loved this one. It followed the usual assumptions of forest living and meeting the true mate in the forest but how else could it be as carnal? That is what is so special about the feral nature of the beast!

Any way you look at it, this was a good story but way too short. And come on Jessica....did they have pups?? Inquiring minds want to know!
