Swami Sivananda Saraswati (September 8, 1887—July 14, 1963) was a Hindu spiritual teacher and a well known proponent of Sivananda Yoga and Vedanta. Sivananda was born Kuppuswami in Pattamadai, in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. He studied medicine and served in Malaya as a physician for several years before taking up monasticism. He lived most of the later part of his life near Muni Ki Reti, Rishikesh.

He is the founder of The Divine Life Society (1936), Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy (1948) and author of over 200 books on yoga, vedanta and a variety of other subjects. He established Sivananda Ashram, the location of the headquarters of The Divine Life Society (DLS), on the bank of the Ganges at Shivanandanagar, at a distance of 3 kilometres from Rishikesh.

Sivananda Yoga, the yoga form propagated by him, are now spread in many parts of the world through Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres, but these centres are not affiliated with Swami Sivananda's original ashrams which are run by the Divine Life Society.

This is a powerful book, make no mistake about it. It is a small book with bullet points on how an individual's thought process can not only shape his/her own life but of the whole humanity itself. Swami Sivananda uses all his experience and profound dharmic knowledge to synthesize information related to thought power. The main message from this book is that we should never entertain negative and selfish thoughts at any point in our life. The emphasis should always be on retaining sublime thoughts. Thoughts leads to words, words lead to actions and actions leads to destiny. This point is underlined all throughout the book. With thoughts as the central topic, Swamiji has discussed about related sub-topics such as thought-culture, metaphysics, psychology, thought-transcendence and god-realization, to name a few. This book can be included in the the moral science curriculum for students and in fact, everyone. Read it and stand benefitted. An execellent book written by Swami Sivananda more than 50 years ago.
Gives a rare insight into thought, its process and how to harness.
Swamiji has condensed the ancient Indian upanishads into this beautiful book.

Found this in one of those neighborhood book exchange boxes, and curiosity overpowered reason. I expected this to be “out there,” but was actually surprised by the degree. Disturbed even. Ultimately but respectfully, I must call utter bullshit on the whole thing.

1.5 for some passages that gave me a sliver of entertainment not found in my typical 1.0 star read. That, and being mercifully short if not repetitive.

A wise man once said, "A deed is done when a thought is planted". It is very important we should watch our thoughts and try to be indifferent towards them especially evil or impure thoughts.

This book talks about thought power and its effects. I really liked this book. If you are practicing meditation, then this book will give you right tools to work on your thoughts.

Even though, I do not agree with some of the concepts overall it is an eye-opening, thoughtful book.

Swami Sivananda is a well-known spiritual teacher. One of his disciples Satyananda Saraswati set up the well-known Bihar School of Yoga. The other is Vishnudevananda who set up the International Sivananda Yoga Centre.

This book is a bit repetitive, but I think it is due to the oral tradition where repetition helps reinforce the teaching. Swami Sivananda talked about the power of thoughts, that they are power energies that give rise to forms. For if one uses the power of thought to think concretely and in a directed manner, it would give rise to what you focus on.

Very much like the Law of Attraction or The Secret, doesn't it? Because they derived their approach from yogic philosophy.

But the key emphasis in this book (it is a spiritual teaching afterall) that is missing in Law of Attraction books is the importance of focussing on pure, kind thoughts and use that to change your environment and surroundings and transcend this world. He also talked about the need to protect oneself from the thoughts of others, since most ordinary folks' minds are filled with negative thoughts that can influence your mind. Sivananda said it is important to conserve one's energy by managing the idle, random and restless thoughts in our minds and that one powerful and effective way of doing so is to have fewer wants and desires.

I like this book. It is an easy and quick read. But it contains powerful teachings.

I wish I had picked up this book earlier, but as they say, better late than never. This book, along with Practice of Brahmacharya by Swami Sivananda, has had a transformative impact on my life especially Practice of Brahmacharya. Since embracing its teachings, I’ve noticed profound changes. Every effort feels simpler, each task becomes easier to accomplish, and qualities like strength, confidence, determination, courage, and inner peace have naturally developed within me.

Let me share my thoughts on this book. If you have an Indian background or a strong inclination toward Indian culture, I believe this book is even more impactful than the Ramayana or Mahabharata. Unlike ancient epics that reflect a time when people had well-established thoughts and disciplined actions, this book addresses the challenges we face today—our inability to control our behavior, not just toward others but also ourselves.

It focuses on our thoughts and how they shape our lives, making it highly relevant to modern times. It’s a must-read, especially for teenagers, as it offers invaluable lessons for self-discipline and personal growth.

Before picking up Practice of Brahmacharya, I wasn’t familiar with Swami Sivananda. Yet, the profound knowledge and timeless wisdom he shares in his works are incredibly relevant, especially in today’s fast-changing world.

Swami Sivananda has enormous amount of Knowledge. He has written more than 300+ books. He has taken a lot of years to study his own mind and it's behavior. This book has given in depth knowledge on "Thoughts". If you would like to get more knowledge on the Mind, you can go through his "Mind, it's Mysteries and Control" book.

Essential read for the 21st Century. A very powerful book on the most powerful quality we humans are endowed with. Thoughts, make us and break us. Our thinking is a double edged sword. This book teaches us how to elevate our consciousness through our thoughts. This should be made a part of our academic curriculum.

Every time I visit the Ashram in Bad Meinberg, I roam its beautiful bookstore. This book found me last year in August when I completed my training in spiritual counselling, and it will keep its place close to my Sadhana space.

How can you judge a book like this? A book of highest spiritual wisdom, yet so simple in its teachings that some may disregard it as some esoteric mumbo jumbo. In fact I'm pretty sure I might have disregarded it in my earlier years. And now it just sang to my heart. It is the essence of what I needed to hear right now.

Swami Sivananda teaches what modern science is *slooooowly* starting to find proof of: our thoughts are living things. Humans form their reality based on their thoughts. What we hold to be true manifests in our life. And life gets radically better if we choose to think good thoughts. I had to make myself sick beyond belief, before it dawned on me that this is true.

Don't get me wrong. "Thought Power" is not another one of those mindless Law of Attraction books. Swami Sivananda does not pretend that your thoughts will manifest a Mercedes Benz and a mansion by the sea for you if you only believe strongly enough. He just points out how beautiful a life based on love, light and good thoughts can be. A simple truth that every mystic EVER tried to relate to his disbelieving contemporaries (most of them without much lasting impact).

In the last chapter Sivananda envisions a future civilization based on the ideal of good thoughts (it closely resembles the picture of the "New Earth" Dolores Cannon received in her work). Picture this: instead of stewing in your own self pity, instead of blaming the world for all the wrong it has done to you, instead of believing that life dealt you a bad hand, why not simply think positive thoughts? Why not consider yourself lucky?

Our thoughts affect everyone around us. If we start with ourself and make ourselves happier, people around us will change. I have seen this happen. And it is so easy. Just picture a world in which everbody is thinking good, positive, empowering thoughts. Where would be the need for violence, hatred and exploitation?

"Thought is what makes the human being. The human being is what makes the civilisation."
(I retranslated this from the german version. Sorry if it doesn't match the original words.)

If you're reading this book and find you have to suspend too much disbelief due to the sheer simplicity of its demands and need some scientific proof check out the writings of Lynne McTaggart (especially The Intention Experiment: Using Your Thoughts to Change Your Life and the World), Bruce H. Lipton and Dawson Church (especially Mind to Matter: The Astonishing Science of How Your Brain Creates Material Reality.

Between the 19th century and now, not hundreds but perhaps even tens of thousands of thinkers, who are, to a certain degree, past masters in their fields, have penned a plethora of essays and books on the powers of the mind, particularly on thought-powers.

In their ranks can be found people like Norman Vincent Peale, Joseph Murphy, and Annie Besant, who have dilated upon the marvels and intricate workings of the mind, which, when properly understood and employed to its full capacity, yields results beyond the imaginings of common people.

Anyone who reads Swami Sivananda's "Thought-Power" would agree that what Peale had said in his five books, and Murphy in his 30-odd books, has been succinctly yet efficaciously presented in the slim 142-page "Thought-Power."

Its length has, however, not sacrificed the impact that Murphy's and Peale's works have created. In fact, like a vitamin encased within a small capsule, "Thought-Power" contains the high potency of the message that a self-realised soul of the first water has imparted to the world in this celebrated treatise, first published in 1934.

When the West first alighted upon "Thought-Power," it resonated well with it as it was by then thoroughly au courant with the New Thought Movement, which, amongst others, drew its inspiration from Transcendentalism, which in turn had been informed by European Romanticism, largely influenced by oriental concepts of pantheism and oneness with the universal spirit.

To laud the powers of thought is elementary, but to demonstrate exactly how the mind generates thoughts, and the methods one can employ to harness its infinite potential, are feats that can only be executed by a self-realised master like Swami Sivananda.

What one finds in "Thought-Power" is the theory behind the symbiosis of thoughts and destiny, along with the step-by-step methods to utilise the mind and thoughts to achieve success in any field, even in the 21st century.

"Thought-Power" does not read like a prosaic religious text that intimidates the readers with its esoteric and abstruse explanations and philosophy. On the contrary, it invites the reader to employ the technique of mind and thought management to their immediate benefit.

There could be only two classes of readers that the book will produce: first, those who hugely benefit from the techniques, and second, those who, out of sheer lackadaisicality, abandon the advantage of utilising the skills of thought-harnessing.

I am confident that the people who do not benefit from the book are those who refuse to put into action what the author has taught, and not people who did not see the efficacy propounded in the book, despite their strenuous efforts.

The book must be studied and not casually read. Its benefits are vast and incalculable.

Aside: Joseph Murphy, the author of "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind", met Swami Sivananda. In the early 1940s, Murphy travelled to India, where he spent time studying under Swami Sivananda at his ashram in Rishikesh. Swami Sivananda, a renowned spiritual teacher, greatly influenced Murphy’s thinking and spiritual practices. This meeting was pivotal in shaping Murphy’s understanding of the power of the mind and his subsequent teachings on positive thinking and the subconscious.

Nowadays, social media apps subconsciously instill in their users' minds thoughts of lust, sexual desires, anger, ego, jealousy, hatred, fury, pseudo-pleasure, unnecessary desires, ignorance, irritability, restlessness, and exciting passions. These evil, negative, impure, and immoral thoughts wreak havoc on our mental, physical, and emotional health, poisoning our lives!

Swamiji argues that "Fewer the thoughts, the greater the peace." Anyone who practices meditation knows how deteriorating thoughts can be when we are concentrating; they distract us from our goal. And now, these very social media apps (Reels and Shorts) are infusing a tremendous amount of unnecessary thoughts into our minds per hour.

Instagram vehemently promotes lustful or sexual thoughts in the minds of youth, which can result in relapse and thus exhaust vitality.

Thoughts are the bricks with which character is built. Tech giants who own Reels and Shorts are controlling the thoughts of millions of people, fostering evil, impure, and immoral thoughts, thus breaking the 'Law of Thought.'

Tech giants are annihilating the human ability for thought control, thought discipline, thought power, contemplation, reflection, introspection, and reasoning for mere profit.

We must, with the help of these kinds of books, fight for our 'attention' and 'thought freedom' against tech giants by abstaining from and restraining their products, or at least by using them intentionally for our goals and not mindlessly. We must instill and muster pure, sublime, noble, divine, and सात्त्विक thoughts.

LET PURE, NOBLE, SUBLIME, DIVINE, सात्त्विक thoughts come to us from every side.

Gets repetitive but overall good read.

I've marked my fav quotes:
Man sows a thought and reaps an action. He sows an action and reaps a habit. He sows a habit and reaps a character. He sows a character and reaps a destiny.

Man is not a helpless being. He has a free will of his own.

It is often said that man is the result of his environmental forces. This is not true. We cannot believe this, because the facts always prove the contrary. Many of the world’s greatest men have been born in poverty and in adverse circumstances.

The erroneous thought that you are the body is the root of all evils. Through wrong thinking you identify yourself with the body. Dehadhyasa arises. You are attached to the body. You identify yourself with your wife, children, house, etc. It is identification or attachment that brings about bondage, misery and pain.

Destroy random thinking. Take a subject and think of its different aspects and bearing.

We unconsciously imitate the actions of those whom we admire. We daily absorb the suggestions of those with whom we come in daily contact. We are acted upon by these suggestions. A man of weak mind yields to the suggestions of a man of strong mind.

Short book on the power of thoughts.

The world inhabited by Sivananda Saraswati is quite interesting, yet stern, cold and dark. Very strict.

He holds that thoughts are living entities with energy and lives of their own. Once you birth a thought, the thought ventures the cosmos at what may as well be light-speed. The thought goes on to enact change in the sea of conscious forms that we are embodied in. Thus be careful of all thoughts you birth.

Thus Savananda Saraswati seems to live the life of a warrior constantly on guard, combating evil thoughts. Focusing on good, divine thoughts as evil thoughts are more energized by direct conflicts than by being ignored.

The book beyond presenting an interesting perspective is incredibly moral. However the text is also rather poetic. For example:

"You are the centre of individual willing, individual thinking, and individual feeling. The enchantment of time and place presents before you heavenly scenes which vanish like optical illusions. You have repeatedly allowed yourself to be mocked by them; that is why your chest is sawed by the friction of sighs, your discriminative power is dried up by the fire of knowledge."

Points to consider:

Learn to unmind the mind. Unlearn everything that has been of no use to you.
organised thinking - take one instance at a time, exhaust it then move on
Mastery over the mind
-non-cooperation with the mind is swimming against the currents. The mind will be thinned

out and gradually become your obedient servant. You will gain mastery over the mind. The

mind must be free from attraction and repulsion. Take on the objects which are only

necessary.
Fend off every single evil thought
Fear forms a belief system. Kill the fear and you will see the whole picture
Free the mind from fear, as long as there is fear that fear will take shelter in a belief,

fear demands conform, security
Practice concentration and organised thinking
you can only hear what you are vibrationally up to speed with
Be the owner of your desire
Build a strong character by strong and noble thinking
Where necessity ends, curiousity begins
You are residing in the temple of a body for a short period only
