This collection of short stories is for readers of Cat Rector's The Goddess of Nothing At All and Epilogues for Lost Gods. Each story delves a little deeper into the lives of Sigyn, Loki, and the people closest to them.
In Winter Comes for All Hearts, Idunn retreats into her own mind to keep from living the horrors of being held prisoner in Thjazi's keep. In Oh Goddess, Loki realizes he can't lie about his affections for Sigyn much longer. In Sacrifices, Sigyn and Alruna find themselves enamoured with one another, but as per usual, Odin has other plans.
With nine distinct stories, this book explores the heights and depths of pain, love, desire, and family.
A full list of trigger warnings can be found on the author website, as well as inside the book before each story.
Cat Rector grew up in a small Nova Scotian town and could often be found simultaneously reading a book and fighting off muskrats while walking home from school. She devours stories in all their forms, loves messy, morally grey characters, and writes about the horrors that we inflict on each other. After spending nearly a decade living abroad, she returned to Canada to resume her war against the muskrats. When she’s not writing, you can find her playing video games, spending time with loved ones, or staring at her To Be Read pile like it's going to read itself.

This project is a little love letter to the series I wrote. I hope people will have fun with it, because ultimately it exists just for that purpose. To fill some gaps, to let characters tell other parts of their stories, and to add a little joy and pain to readers' lives.
The collection is 9.5 stories and 170 physical pages, each of which comes with their own trigger warnings list. Some are cute, some are fun, some hurt, and some are spicy. Two of them are also found in the back of the hardcovers of The Goddess of Nothing At All and Epilogues for Lost Gods, in order to make those stories accessible to other readers. One is a story that was available via Ko-Fi as a fundraiser. The rest are original content. Every cent of profit from this book will go toward the creation of my next book.
Threads of Fate is a Adult Dark Fantasy collection of short stories. I received an eARC for an honest review.
I've never done short story collections before and I feel like my usual reviewing method wouldn't work. So, instead I will review each story as briefly as possible without spoiling any of the stories. Speaking of spoilers, DO NOT read this collection if you have NOT read the duology. Trust me, this collection WILL spoil both books.
Oh Goddess - Oh Goddess is the first story you will read and it is of the story of Loki falling in love with Sigyn some time after returning somewhat publicly welcomed into Asgard. I thought it was so cute to read what was going on his head while trying to deny his feelings for Sigyn, and of course because this was happening in the public dining halls of Valhalla, a massive brawl breaks out and Loki takes it upon himself to keep Sigyn safe while she tries to stop it. It was just great.
Winter Comes for All Hearts - Unfortunately, this is the story of when Idunn was betrayed by Loki and was held captive in Jotunn. Sure enough she was abused, assaulted, raped, and near starved. Although we get her feelings of Sigyn after the rescue, and I did feel bad for her, I still can't with her. Sorry not sorry.
A Lesson in Loyalty: Hired Date AU - This is more of a modern telling of Sigyn and Loki and I'm not at all surprised of Odin's take in this world. Although I thought this story was cute, there was a part of me thinking that Sigyn dropping her life to go to another country with Loki, who she just met, but the other part of me was like, "Yeah. Makes sense." Haha!
Some Oaths are Easier Kept than Others - Originally written for charity, this is a steamy, smutty, Yule time story. And yeah . . . I found it hot. So sue me lmao!
Too Few Fish in the Sea - Oh man this hurt, because this is the story of Hreidulfr when he lived in Midgard before being sent to Asgard. I-I love Hreidulfr, and this story hurt me. I'm not even surprised this story is in here haha . . . *goes to a corner to cry!*
Father is God in the Eyes of a Child - This is the story of little Hel when she was in hiding with her mother Angrboda in the Iron Wood, but her younger brother Fenrir is still in the womb. I thought it was just so sweet yet also AGH! I just need and want to hug Hel and keep her in my arms forever lol.
The Monster You Made - You can read this story if you buy the hardback version of The Goddess of Nothing at All. This is the story of Loki after his mother died and Odin took him in and used him for the spy he so clearly wanted to be used as. The pain building in Loki and the outrage ready to burst from him. It hurt. I swear these characters need a million hugs!
Sacrifices - Ok, I knew what this one was going to be about and I wasn't at ALL ready for the cryfest. This is the story of Sigyn and her first and only love before Loki, Alruna. I-I just . . . I'm just happy Sigyn has a happy ending . . . eventually *Is curled on the floor clutching a pained heart in a puddle of my own tears!*
Hope - Ok so this is an interesting one, although I found it cute, this story takes place shortly after Loki and Sigyn married after finding out she was pregnant with their first kid. The fear and anxiety of having a child and taking care of it and Loki promising to just be there for her . . . note that this also VERY much well before he has to help "stop" the builder from finishing the wall around Asgard . . . Like reading his promises I was like, "Yeeeeeah about that . . ."
Happily Ever After - Alright so this help me feel sooooo much better after the pain I received reading some of these stories haha! This story takes place shortly after Epilogues for Lost Gods ends but still before that Epilogue. Loki is still understanding what his dynamic in this relationship is with both Sigyn AND Alyssa. All three characters were moved into a new home within the city of Folkheim to accommodate all three and Sigyn and Alyssa are also taking this new approach in this relationship slow. They share a large bed, but intimacies haven't been attempted, until now. YUP! This story was hot and I'm not at ALL sorry haha!
Oh man, this collection was great. I loved many of the stories and found myself, once again, smiling, laughing, and crying. It was great learning more about certain characters and seeing what transpired off page during the duology. I will definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for just a bit more after Epilogues for Lost Gods, but you have to also prepare to have a bit more of a cry here and there as well. Although I'm sad that this is pretty much it for Sigyn, Loki, and the rest of the beloved characters from this duology, I will keep my fingers crossed to see if the author might have just a bit more stories waiting in the wind for some of these characters. Hey, you'll never know.
SO GOOD. I have no words for how much I love this series. I have no words for how sad I am to leave this world. I can't express my love in any other way than to say, read this book. Do yourself a favor and pick it up. It's emotional, it's raw, and it's heartbreaking. Every character worms their way into your heart, and every ounce of plot has you addicted. It's an amazing series, and one I'll never forget.
As to the actual content of the short stories, I think Hope or Father is God in the Eyes of a Child were my favorites. They both showcased our favorite characters so well, and both were so emotional. Father in particular had me tearing up, Hel was such a cute kid.
I'll definitely be reading what Rector writes next, at this point, she could do no wrong. I'll be rereading this whole series soon enough, and I know I'll love it even more next time
Thanks to Cat Rector for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review
This book is a collection of #DarkAdultFantasy short stories which could be read with/after #tGoNaa or before/after #EfLG (the last story to be read only after EfLG)
☘️The first one is really cute and endearing.. it's from Loki's POV, about how and when he fell in love with Sigyn.. it's soo beautiful it hurts to think about it!!
☘️Another one from Idunn's POV, when she was held prisoner..
☘️Then, a hired date from #AlternateUniverse or we can say a modern day version of #Odin #Sigyn and #Loki
☘️Hreidulfr's last few days as human in #Midgard (this one especially left me in tears more than any other)
☘️Then some more tales depicting domestic versions of Loki as Hel's father, Sigyn's husband and also one where he was Odin's weapon!
☘️We also get a gist of Sigyn and Alruna's past..
☘️There are also a few #spicy chapters included..
Rector knows how to rip the readers' hearts out and leave them bleeding.. and also to heal our broken, torn souls' wounds with her words! Her books are so full of unfiltered love and pain and desire, it gets difficult to reacquaint with reality!
After having read all these 3 books, I don't feel like parting with the series.. I'd like to read another book or two more in it where we get more of all their five kids and Hod and Eyvinder and also about Loki's new mysterious #Valravn ability!
I can't thank you enough for all the #eARCs of these wonderful books you sent to me in exchange for an honest #review
A lovely collection of short stories and character-rich narratives that add extra insight and depth to the lives of Sigyn, Loki, & company. As a fan of the duology I poured through these stories very quickly, each having its own unique draw and flavor to it.
I think its a great complimentary work, especially if you have a particular affinity for the characters whose stories touched you in the preceding books. It also in my opinion is a great stand-alone if the reviews for the duology drew you in but you need a bit more of a taste test before you invest in reading the whole saga. However, if you do fall into the latter category there are of course spoilers to beware of, as well as some important original characters that you'll only recognize/be able to fully appreciate if you've read TGoNAA and EfLG first.
An excellent addition to Unwritten Runes! I really enjoyed the variety in this short story collection. We get to hear from many of the characters, including Hreidulfr, Idunn, and Hel. The stories range from cute and fluffy to an emotional gut punch (as is typical for this series). There’s even an Modern AU story that was a lot of fun to read and not something typically included in anthologies. I really appreciate that the bonus hardcover short stories were included in this volume, as I own the paperbacks of the other books.
I really liked this short story collection featuring characters from The Goddess of Nothing At All and its sequel. Some of the stories are tragic, some of them spicy, there's even an AU and a threesome! :D They don't give too much to the established world and character personalities, but some of them I found really interesting, like Hreidulfr's story or the tale of what happened between Alruna and Sigyn. The ones featuring Hel and Idunn were also really good and I would have read even more of those!
This short story collection really helped flesh out the characters from the Goddess of Nothing At All. Set in the same Norse mythology world as the other 2 books, we follow some of our favourite characters through pivotal moments of their lives. The stories are very fun and at times a little spicy. Once again the author has done a great job in world and character descriptions. A few of the stories were really heart wrenching and I loved every second of it. I highly recommend this whole series.
Threads of Fate is a fantastic addition to the Unwritten Runes duology. A collection of short stories, it delves a little deeper into the lives of the characters readers came to know and love from The Goddess of Nothing At All and Epilogues for Lost Gods. The stories are, at times, heart wrenching, but also fun and spicy. I enjoyed them all, and it is too difficult to pick just one as my favorite. I definitely recommend this book!
I'm really glad I held off on reading this until I'd finished Epilogues for Lost Gods.
I don't have a whole lot to say without spoiling the stories. I always enjoy getting some of the backstory to characters who otherwise didn't get much page time. It's also fun seeing what they did in between their scenes in the main books.
Truly captivating. I cannot get enough of Cats writing as well as Loki and Sigyn. Once again found myself on a heartbreaking, lovely emotional ride. Now I wish to re-read this duo-logy. This is a must read if you enjoyed The Goddess of Nothing At All and Epilogues for Lost Gods.
This was a unique expansion to The Goddess of Nothing At All and Epilogues of Lost Gods. It only makes want to reread the first 2 books even more.only this time with a few more layers and knowledge into certain characters and events.
As with the first book, I absolutely loved this!! Each and every little story was great! Love the God of mischief! Cannot wait to read the next book! And that last story!
