Although the Bigfoot phenomena has fascinated humanity around the world throughout history, the Patterson/Gimlin film, shot in 1967, most certainly caught the world's attention like never before. However, what most people don't know is that the famous film also kicked off a carefully thought out game plan implemented by the Bigfoot Forest People in order to accomplish a life-saving agenda. Regarding the Bigfoot Forest People, there are never any accidents. They do everything with intention and purpose.
On July 1, 2000, Dr. Matthew A. Johnson and his family encountered a Bigfoot on the mountain above the Oregon Caves National Park. Since that world famous encounter occurred, Dr. Johnson spent sixteen years of his life pursuing the Bigfoot Forest People with persistence and relentless commitment. He transitioned from an aggressive “Old School” paparazzi money shot researcher, to a habituator, and on to an interactionist.
A Fifty Year Journey Come Full Circle ties several stories and experiences together to help explain who the Bigfoot Forest People are, where they come from, and why they're here.In short, there is no other Bigfoot book out this like this one. You are one hundred percent guaranteed that this book will overwhelm you with the truth and promises to blow your mind in the process. The Bigfoot research community is going to change in a major positive direction.
I read this because Dr. Matthew Johnson is a very important person to my boyfriend and his dad, and he really wanted me to read this (ok and I lost a bet and I'm a woman of my word). This is a very hard book to review, but I didn't hesitate to give it 5 stars for the vulnerable, fascinating, open and humble storytelling by Dr. Johnson.
Going into this, I had barely even heard of Bigfoot, let alone researched it myself. I also wouldn't consider myself to be someone who is naturally drawn to the paranormal, the spiritual or that associated with conspiracy thinking in mainstream culture. But, this didn't seem to matter in terms of my investment in and enjoyment of the book.
Dr. Johnson spends a good part of the book establishing his credibility as both a human being and a researcher, which both the empath and the scientist in me definitely appreciated. I loved reading the beginning part about his family and his first experiences with the Bigfoot forest people, the change in attitude from scared and sceptical to intrigued and passionate. I think because I was not an active non-believer, it was easy for me review the 'evidence' (witness statements, testimonies, circumstantial findings, observations) from a more neutral point of view - neither nodding along with everything nor dismissing it. It also allowed me to just enjoy the ride from a certain place of detachment with no set motive of confirming my own pre-existing beliefs.
This detachment, however, only relates to detachment from a specific wish to confirm my views, because I certainly wouldn't say I felt detached from this book during my reading experience. I actually started looking forward to the moments where I would usually read this book on my phone (the gym, on the metro to work) because I was hooked to the story and the way things were progressing, both in terms of Dr. Johnson's connection with the Bigfoot forest people, as well as in terms of his expanding circle of like-minded people.
I feel like for me this book had two layers. The first concerning my reading experience with the book in itself. The writing style, tone, build-up etc., I would almost say 'the characters', but that's just my fiction-reading brain talking. I really enjoyed this book just for this reading experience, with Dr. Johnson's accessible, human, vulnerable, critical, immersive, loving way of writing and telling his amazing story. You can tell he's a people-person, a loving family man, someone with high scientific standards and someone humble and caring. This is also what I was referring to when I said he truly establishes credibility first of all as a human being.
The second layer to me, was the more substantive one. I find it hard to describe the nature of the content of this book, without using the words spiritual or scientific, both of which I feel like don't do it justice. Nonetheless, a clear objective of this book is to share the lived experiences of someone who first set out the research the Bigfoot forest people, and then took an approach revolving around interaction, cohabitation, mutual learning and respect/love - with the intention of having people believe it or at least open their minds to it. I think this layer was also 'well-executed' (for lack of a better word, hello tired non-native brain). During my BSc in Sociology, I took a class on research methodology that taught us how to spot conspiracy thinking, as well as the flawed form of 'abductive' reasoning usually employed to award this type of thinking some pseudo-credibility. However, I could not find any traces of this type of thinking in Dr. Johnson's reasoning, nor did he pretend his findings had any more 'scientific validity' than they did. This made it hard for me to deny both his sincerity and his competence. It's always hard to find a balance grand statements and inconclusive speculation, but Dr. Johnson did a great job at sticking to the facts and taking the reading through his experience one step at a time. Also, I obviously have to award bonus points for all the testimonials, which really gave the book a certain dynamic touch in terms of the reading experience, as well as adding another element of credibility.
Despite my high rating and positive reading experience, I don't know how much impact this book will have on me as a person, apart from giving me an open mind about everything that's out there in the world that the average person will never get to witness or be involved in. I did enjoy this book way more than expected, and I feel like there was definitely a lot more to it than one would think based on the title and cover page. The book doesn't just cover the existence of the Bigfoot forest people as a single phenomenon, but it creates connections between numerous phenomena in the spiritual realm where 'everything is connected', which I found a very soothing thought.
So good! Buy it if you really want to know the truth!!
