‘Mission of the Messiah’ was an enriching and theologically rich read indeed! I was especially edified by the way Tim Gray has explained the relationship between the Sacrifice and Feasting aspect of the Wedding Banquet of the Lamb of God.
I thought Professor Scott Hahn had the last word on that topic in current Catholic Theological New Evangelization books, but Gray has even gone ahead in that respect in this enlightening book. I’ve always thought the Gospel of Luke to be more clinical than Matthew or John, but after reading this book, I’ve changed my opinion on that. Not only is this Gospel an inclusive one but it also redefines the way we look at the sequel to this Gospel, that is St. Luke’s ‘Acts of the Apostles’. Can’t wait to study the Acts in this new light!
I’ve always loved the parables of St. Luke, but only lately since the past five years I have come to know the beauty of them and their relationship with Jesus’s Transfiguration, His journey to Jerusalem, His choice of the Passover and of course His idea of what Biblical Theologians along with Liturgical Theologians call ‘table fellowship’. All this and more one can read in ‘Mission of the Messiah’ which is a definitive but very concise and precise analysis on the way Jesus moved towards Jerusalem and his ultimate mission – which can astonish you!
If you as lay readers were astonished with Professor Scott Hahn’s books on Covenantal Biblical Theology like ‘The Fourth Cup’ and ‘A Father Who Keeps His Promises’ and ‘A Lamb’s Supper’ then you should not miss this title by Gray. Grab your copy today and be enlightened in the light of Christ, who opens our eyes everyday to the truths of Scripture like he did to His two disciples on the Road to Emmaus.
St Augustine says “The Old (Testament) is in the New (Testament) revealed, the New is in the Old concealed” and that’s exactly what this book shows us. I enjoyed this book! It was short, to the point and easy to understand. I always love books that take me more in-depth in scripture and the life of Christ. This book was very helpful for me to understand Jesus’ mission of mercy and how He fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament. I’ll probably come back and read this one again in the future.
First, I would like to say that I received this book free through Goodreads First Read program. Thank you! and to the publisher, Emmaus Road for a prompt response.
This is definitely a Four Star Book. Tim Gray has presented the Luke's Gospel in a format suitable for pleasure reading to deepen your knowledge and understanding or as a study book. It is suitable for group or individual study.
As a recent convert, this book will be accompanying me through the cycle of Luke and the reflections will enhance my journey. As I am a note-taker, I am not concerned with the lack of blank writing space in the book... however, for those who are lengthy note-takers, you may want to keyword thoughts and highlight or like me, buy a spiral. This is definitely a book, one will one to return to and as one works through the reflections, a journal would be an interesting record to have for referral.
Thank you, Tim Gray, Emmaus Road and of course, Goodreads. I cherish this book and while I have not noted chapter and verse, those who will gravitate to this genre, will understand why.
My Lenten Promise this year is to read 30 minutes a night from a book that will increase my faith and knowledge of the scriptures. This book was well written and I loved how it tied the old testament with the new testament. Mr Gray did an amazing job explaining how my of the parables and actions that Luke's gospel describes intertwine with the prophesies of Isaiah and the founding fathers in the bible . This was an easy read and gave me a better understanding of not only the gospel of Luke, but of the mission of Jesus Christ!
Time Gray is a professor in Colorado and has had several series on EWTN. In fact the subject of this book I think was one (I didn't see it). Gray has a way of showing the Gospels like no one else I have ever read. He explains things that make perfect sense yet I never understood before. If you read through this book you will come away understanding the Gospel of Luke like never before and it is a very easy read; down to earth.
I received this book as a First Reads giveaway from Goodreads. Many thanks to Goodreads, the author, and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
"Mission of the Messiah" is a readable and thorough, enlightening and enjoyable analysis of the Book of Luke. It is useful for both personal and group Bible study, and should serve the Christian community well for many years.

This book is a full analysis and explanation of Luke's Gospel account of Jesus's life. It really adds a lot to the scripture and helps the reader fully understand the significance of every line.
I was very pleased with this book. Its easy to read, yet I learned a lot. I will be keeping this for a reference book. If you like Scott Hahn's books, you will probably like this book also.
I'm reading this for a book club, but I'm not too into it. Based on the book of Luke. Maybe it will get more interesting later... I'm only about 35 pages into it.
