A Witch's Ever After #2

Of Roses and Rituals

Rate this book
"Before the summer ends, I’m going to ask you to marry me,” the beast said. “And you won’t say no …"

Fiona is ready to spend her holiday having fun, but her father has other plans. Worried that his witch daughter has become too reckless after suffering a loss, he bargains her off to serve as assistant to Dr. Elias Van Doorn.

Cursed by a demon to take on the form of a beast, the famous doctor works in seclusion. Fiona should be frightened by his horns and his size. She shouldn’t find his aggravation so delightful or the swish of his tail so captivating or his arrogant mouth so alluring. An irresistible bond begins to form between them, but as she surrenders to her primal desire, she resists giving up her heart. Grief, it seems, is the greater curse.

In just one summer can the clever beast tame this beauty and claim his fated mate?

Of Roses and Rituals is a Gaslamp romance that shares a universe with previous books, but it can be enjoyed as a standalone.

I saw gaslamp fantasy Beauty and the Beast retelling and had to give it a try. This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. Fiona (h) is a witch who’s a bit reckless after experiencing a broken heart from grief. She doesn’t allow herself to form deep connections anymore and her shenanigans have caused problems where she works (with her father). Her father effectively forces her to travel to be a botany assistant for a reclusive, cursed (he’s permanently beastly) scientist in an effort to help her. Elias (H) is grumpy, but also gives great banter, and has also experienced grief with the loss of his child. This is the setup for an emotional and sweet character-driven romance. The story is told in third person, dual POV. No ow/om drama, neither are virgins (h has been promiscuous and no mention of H’s past other than a friendship that resulted in his son - no scenes with other people), bc discussed.

I wasn’t sure how the role of grief would be handled in the book and while it’s there in the beginning, it’s not addressed deeply until later in the story because Fiona has buried her loss. She’s also hiding from the potential with Elias and once their chemistry turns physical (read: steamy steam including tail), she reinforces her walls to try and keep him emotionally out. But there’s growth, releasing of guilt, and ultimately lovely romance. I esp loved Elias in his beastly but nice glory and how crazy he was for Fiona. He challenges her and she challenges him right back (typically via trying to annoy him).

World building wise, I’ll be honest that I was confused a bit to start. There are witches (Fiona is one), priests (Elias is one), and magics (plural) with social rules involving them. People sense magic in different ways (smell and taste for example) and sometimes magics are visible. Demons can possess and threaten people. There’s a lot happening. The structure of the world also wasn’t always clear to me, like the country they were in compared to the rest of the world. I’m not sure if prior books set the stage, although this is a standalone. There are also automatons moving around due to magic and steam transportation, these were really neat touches.

Side character wise, most of the story is focused on Fiona and Elias, but her family is important and there is another assistant at Elias’ home who’s around. One of the automatons also becomes important to Fiona.

There are some tearful moments and some dangerous ones (see: threat of demons) and some pushing away but these two do get their HFN, which you feel assured will be HEA. I’m curious about this author’s other books on my TBR even more now.

We are big fans of S.L. Prater, so we picked this up as soon as we could. Her books are usually smexy fantasy/romance set in a world with strict gender roles underlying the social structure, and that's certainly the case with Of Roses and Rituals. What's a little different about this one is that the hero was cursed Beauty-and-the-Beast style to take the form of a satyr-like creature. So yeah, everyone, it's also a monster romance.

Monster romance isn't a subgenre we naturally gravitate toward. That said, we really enjoyed this one. It has close ties to BatB without being a 1:1 retelling, with Fiona living with "Dr. Beast" at her father's behest. Elias "Dr. Beast" Van Dorn earned his nickname by defeating a demon, who unfortunately cursed him to take on a satyr's form. (He's got the horns, the hooves, and the tail to prove it.) As they work and live in close proximity, they find it quite difficult - nay, impossible! - to deny their attraction to each other.

The book also includes a serious examination of grief. Fiona's first love died before they could be married, while Elias is dealing with his own past tragedy. That said, the novel isn't melancholy, and instead focuses on moving forward and allowing new relationships to blossom.

One final note: this may be the sexiest of all of Prater's books so far, so be sure to pick this one up if sexy laboratory hookups are your jam.

This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.

An enchanting, well written story of a cursed wounded beast and a heartbroken witch.
This story had it all, a beautiful, carefree, lost witch- Fiona and a grumpy, brilliant doctor/priest hero Elias. Oh, how I adored him!
Both had great character progression.

From the first meeting itself they clashed and I loved their witty banter. Especially the playful side of their relationship.
The tiny tiny magic touches in the story was interesting. As was their powers and the world building.
Another thing I enjoyed was, Eli wasn’t scared to put his heart and soul on line. He loved Fiona deeply and it showed. They both had healing to do and Fiona did it with the help of Eli.
I enjoyed the surprised bursts of demon we got in the story even though last time it was completely unexpected (almost gave me a heart attack)!

The reason I didn’t give this full stars was, I didn’t like that Fiona was very promiscuous in the beginning of the story even though it’s one of the characteristics of witches in this world (me problem). I enjoyed and liked the book but it didn’t blew my mind.

Overall an entertaining read.

Recommended.

Thank you S.L Prater for ARC.

Of Roses and Rituals might be one of my favourite reads of 2022 so far. It had so many different elements that I absolutely LOVE and I can’t possibly find any fault with it. It is a great, short read that leaves you warm and giddy at the end.

PLOT:
Fiona is a carefree witch who only lives in the moment and doesn’t take any of her responsibilities too seriously. She’s late to work, has multiple suitors and isn’t responsible enough to even buy groceries.

Her father, Ran Boaz, gives her an ultimatum. She will either lose her job or spend the summer as Dr Beast’s assistant. Unhappy, Fiona packs her bags.

Dr Elias Van Doorn was cursed by a demon years ago; he looks more like a beast than a man. He has horns and hooves and believes himself to look disgusting. As a favour, he agrees to take an assistant for the summer. What he doesn’t expect is Fiona Boaz, a woman who vibrates with energy and whirls into his life like a tornado. He doesn’t know whether he wants to strangle her or kiss her.

As the two fight their attraction, old demons from the past rear their heads. Can they overcome their old nightmares and find a happy future?

My thoughts:

I genuinely think that this gif was what my face looked like the whole time I was reading. I finished this book in one sitting. I hated myself for reading it so fast and not taking my time with it, just enjoying it. But I also couldn’t stop myself from devouring it because it IS PERFECT!

Why do I love it so much?

1. Dr Beast. The man has horns and a tail and he knows how to use them!
2. They two MCs are obsessed with each other (sense of smell and taste are explored.
3. Dr Beast calls Fiona ‘Good Girl’ and my panties are on fire.
4. Fiona is strong and goes after what she wants.
5. Mort. I just love him and all the automatons.
6. The heat and sexy times. The book was on fire. I think this might be her sexiest book yet.

Basically, I love this book. Give it a try. It’s only around 200 pages and Prater’s style is brilliant.

TW: It deals with grief. Both MCs have lost people close to them and deal with it differently. It added a whole different layer to an otherwise light-hearted, funny book.

Thank you SL Prater for providing me with an ARC in return for an honest review.

I received an ARC of this, which I begged for, simply because I have a thing for satyrs and/or anything resembling a satyr. However, I did NOT expect to be trapped in my bathtub all night until I finished it.

This book was a delight. I’ll list some bullet points before I wax poetic about all the things I loved-
Beauty and the Beast retelling
Interesting well-developed magic system
Fantastic religious/magic lore/history
Great spice
Funny banter
Grumpy x Sunshine
Steampunk vibes

I didn’t expect this to feel fluffy, but it did. It was a genuinely delightful read. It was light and fun and even in the little scary bit, I was still fully enjoying myself and never feeling overwhelmed. The author is SPECTACULAR at avoiding info dumps, and after reading this I will be revisiting my manuscript because now i feel like a clumsy, plodding workhorse comparatively. The ease with which detail was sprinkled into the story was remarkable and I am genuinely envious of the skill.

This book was like a strawberry milkshake. It was yummy and fun and filling and made perfectly. I absolutely adored it and this author is going to the front of my “read everything they write” list.

New take on Beauty and the Beast

Of Roses and Rituals is book two in A Witch's Ever After, which is an interconnected standalone series. My three favorite words when describing a book.

I have not read the first book, I was immediately drawn to this book as it's a monster romance and similar to Beauty and the Beast. Sign me up.

S.L. Prater wrote a story that was so much more than those two descriptors. Tjey wrote a story that played heavily on grief, grief of a partner and grief of a child. Throw in the sense of failure one gets with that grief and I was definitely along for the ride.

You have Fiona, the beauty, a witch who doesn't quite fit into the mold placed by society and attempting to heal herself in ways she isn't fully aware, going to be the assistant of Dr. Elias Van Doorn, the Beast and she doesn't have an easy task ahead of her. She has to break down his barriers while trying to protect her heart and it gave me all the feels included.

Honestly this book is so well written, with the perfect amount of spice, and it truly will keep you entertained and enthralled until the end.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love a quick read that combines humor, wholesomeness, just the right amount of feels, and a healthy helping of spice/kink. Of Roses and Rituals gave me all of that and then some. A witchy retelling of Beauty and the Beast, this novella length book delivers on all the tropes you'd expect from a BatB story - from the grumpy beast and sunshiny beauty, to the sexual-tension filled bantering, to the old castle and "enchanted" inanimate objects (or in this case, machines) that run the place... but in typical S.L. Prater fashion, she gives us so much more than those familiar story beats.

Of Roses and Rituals, at its core, is a story about grief and healing.

Is there horn and tail play and monsterf*ckery goodness, too? Yes. Did I enjoy the hell out of that? Of course I did.

But there's also a wonderful amount of heart to this little story, I found myself sighing and grinning like a fool and even tearing up a little throughout. It's just so sweet and funny and delicious. And

Absolutely recommend picking up this - or honestly any - of S.L. Prater's work if you're in the mood for something quick to read that gives you just what you want and in the perfect dose. This one gave me all the warm fuzzies. It was like a cuddly hug for my soul. I loved this book!

This is the second book of A Witch's Ever After series and it's Fiona's love story, the daughter of Ren and Erin, whom we can see during the story 26 years after their own.
It is an amazing love story, a retelling of the Beauty and the Beast with the special touch of S.L. Prater's Kriegspiel that I've learned to love.
Fiona is broken by grief and Elias is certain that he can't be loved because of the way he looks. Their first kiss is my favorite scene in the entire book, since it has all the feels and the story is heartwarming and sweet, even with all the banter and the characters learning how to trust and be vulnerable again.

A nonchalant witch, that loves to unbutton the robes of new lovers, can't seem to take her nose and her hands off Dr. Beast 😱🥵 the only man she cannot touch 😏

Intelligence is sexy, fated mates, forced proximity, loss of loved ones. tail play, horn play, lots of play 🥵

One of my favourite books of 2022

📖 @ ARC (this is my honest review) available on KU on October 24th!

👶 ~ Adult. Please check the content warnings by the author... that seems to be more like a teaser than anything else! (but really, there are serious topics, so check it. Know that you are in very safe hands.)

🌶 ~ Fiona is like a care-free whirlwind, continuously testing the patience and restrain of The Beast... 😏🥵 Damn!

⚔ ~ I just want to shout "Go read it!"
Fiona is an incredible intelligent botanist, that is requested to serve as an assistant to the Dr. Beast. Her father, Ren (which I adore! from the Wicked witch of Kriegspiel) is extremely concerned (and loving!!!) so pushes her to accept the position in an isolated house, very far from temptation. Little did he know 😏😏
It is during this heart-warming interaction between father and daughter that we see glimpses of the deep wound behind her care-free smiles 😭

Dr Elias Van Doorn is a mystery, hero of the people and cursed by a demon. Now he lives isolated and focused only on his magic research. With horns 🥵, a tale 🥵 and hooves, he sees himself split by Fiona, should he eat her on a plate or on a bed 🥵🤯😵

👑 ~ See, here's the author's magic: Eli is damaged by grief but not destroyed. How he shows us hope when we believe there's none, is... I have no words. He is so beautiful and freaking brave. Thank you @slprater !!!
Fiona found his brain sexy, but it is his emotional strength thar ruins her for others. Not to mention his smell 🥵 but she must resist, or pain will destroy her for good 😭
The banter! The push and pull! First she starts to peel his walls, then it's him! Then it's her, then it's him! OMG I loved it! It's like: who is going to win????
Fiona's parents, Ren and Erin, love and affection is so heart-warming and beautiful!

🌎 ~ Welcome to SL Prater's Victorian Gaslamp world! Where the patriarchy believes free spirited witches and children are a commodity to be used and abused. But book by book, we see it crumble apart... until we reach to Fiona 💕😭

📖 ~ How do you do it? How? You ruined me! 😭

Lows ~ Next book asap please!

~Thank you to S. L. Prayer for providing this ARC for an honest review~

There is a beast and there is a beauty what more needs to be said other than this book is AMAZING!!

The character building, backstoried and world around them building was fantastic. The leading lady in this book is very much like the roses she comes to tend prickly, needing some water and a good prune lol.

In the story you see the side of magic that does not involve waving wands, throwing balls of flame or even magic potions you see the side of magic that is sensory, instinctual and subtle.

It ended too soon for me, I was so caught up in their story that when it ended it felt like I was rudely ripped from a good dream.

I loved the balance of character and world building with the spice and romance!!

really works as a fairy tale retelling, I enjoyed the previous book from the A Witch's Ever After series. The characters were what I was hoping for and really enjoyed going through this plot. I enjoy the way S. L. Prater wrote this and look forward to reading more from this series.

My friends, can I tell you that the moment I received notification that I’d been approved for the new S.L. Prater installment in the Witches Ever After series ARC, Of Roses and Rituals, I may have done a little butt dance in my chair whilst in a work meeting. To be fair, I wasn’t needed at that point during the conversation, however, I was a waste for the remainder of it. Let’s not play - steamy steampunk books with retelling of famous fairy tales always trumps public education.
Come on! (I kid, I kid).

Back in April of this year, S.L. was gracious to join us on the podcast as we reviewed her first book in this series, Of Heists and Hexes. I’ve been excited since THEN. Boys and girls, this new installment did not disappoint. In the past few months I have fallen down a supernatural romance rabbit hole, and I’m not sure this Alice is ready to come back to reality. Of course, in one of steamy paranormal romances nowadays, Alice would just fuck the white rabbit instead of even encountering the Red Queen…wait…isn’t that what happened with the SYFY miniseries, Alice? Note to self…check out where I can stream this.
Nevermind! Back on track!

Like Heists and Hexes, Of Roses and Rituals, is a retelling of a popular fairy tale, this time, a reimagining of Beauty and the Beast. Sigh. I remember reading somewhere that the Beast was a figure in a lot of young people’s sexual awakening. I think it’s because of the tight breeches and big thighs… probably the tongue too, it’s always the tongue.

Our ‘beastly’ figure here is Dr. Elias Van Doorn. Eli, having been cursed to become a half man/half beast in order to save an ENTIRE CITY (sorry I thought that needed emphasis), now lives in isolation with his scientific work and sporadic heroic demon slaying. Beauty, or Fiona Boaz, daughter or Erin and Ren Boaz, both professors and he Chancellor at Kriegspiel University, has been a bit precarious with her life as of late. Her father, in fear that she’s become too complacent, sends her to Eli as an research assistant in the hopes that she’ll begin to truly contribute to the academic field in which she has chosen to work. While both Fiona and Eli butt heads, they can’t deny the almost electric attraction. As both have grief stricken pasts, will their shared journeys lead to healing and eventually love? Yes, I mean..duh. I ask that question all the time yet I know the answer.

The Compliment Sandwich

The Top Bun (The Pro)
Guys, guys, guys, guys…it’s a #fallfirstfallshard hero book! This trope is gaining favor with me quite rapidly; it’s right up there with enemies to lovers and marriage of convenience. Eli is knockout, dragout, in love with Fiona at first damn sight.
I’m not giving anything away here since this line is literally in the description of the book:
“Before the summer ends,” he growled, boxing her in which his bulky arms, “I’m going to ask you to marry me.”..”And you won’t say no.”

But I would just like to throw out what Eli says to just before this line, (get ready to swoon peeps):
“You’re as radiant as a sunrise. I think I’ve loved you since the first time you opened that smart of yours”.
We talk on the podcast all the time how we love that backhanded compliment, like “I love your dumb handsome face”..That’s what this line is for me…
Mind you, as while he’s delivering this line, his tail is doing this:
“His tail prodded between her legs. She spread her thighs for him, gasping when the supple length curled into the waistband of her drawers to rub at her folds with gentle teasing caresses”.

I would never in my life thought I’d find tailplay sexy, but holy cats! En fuego. Four alarm fire in Rae’s underoos.

Let me just add this whole scene is predicated upon the request that Eli is willing to keep his priestly stole on during their sexual congress. None of the priests in the past would do that for Fiona.

Y’all remember I have a priest kink too, so this scene hit all the right notes, my friends.

The two have an immediate connection, albeit filled with playful animosity. What I really enjoyed about this retelling is that at no point does the ‘beast’ character ever act as such; we don’t see Beauty having to reconcile the man inside to the beast on the outside - or be in fear of him. In fact, Fiona is enthralled with Eli upon their first meeting. Her witch faculties are through scent, and he emits an addicting scent almost immediately. And that’s all I’m going to say about that. :heart cockles melting in 3..2..1:

The Meat (The Con)
I’m a glutton for punishment. I would have liked their third act breakup to last a bit longer. Just because I like pining. Call me a pine tree, because I am INTO IT. There is very little angst in this, mostly acceptance of grief, so maybe just a little yearning might have been a good thing for a certain character.

The Bottom Bun (The Pro)

I like where the books in this world are going. We are seeing more of the female characters taking control and making a name for themselves. As with The Widowed Witch of Kriegspiel (which takes place I’m assuming about 15 years before this book), the witches in this society are realizing they have the true power and can begin to wield it for their own rights and safety. In that book, in particular, we are introduced to a date rape drug that is being used by priest husbands to subdue their ‘feisty’ witch wives to fulfill marital duties. The women are so fucking powerful that you need to sedate them so their don’t pull off your bullocks when you attempt to take them against their will. Retribution is coming, fellas, I feel it in the wind!

As Of Heists and Hexes also takes place concurrently to this book, we see independent women starting to make a difference in how society views women, and with Robin, in particular, she’s the leader of a social cause. Eli’s castle lives on the outskirts of Sherwood Forest, which seems to have different rules than some of the other areas that take place in the books. I still think of Pistol and David’s warning to Ana in The Secret Witch of Kriegspiel: “Remember this place, “ David said gruffly. “You aren’t ever to come here by yourself.” Ana swallowed. “I know. I remember…They’ve burned witches in Pistol…They take matters into their own hands in places like this”. Pistol plays a large part of The Wicked Witch of Kriegspiel too. I hope upon hope that Pistol eventually gets their comeuppance in the end.

Something happens in this book that is absolutely gorgeous and I will definitely not spoil it for you, but it just shows the long trajectory Prater has with creating supportive and magnanimous hero’s. While the inventions that Eli has created and the efforts he has to fight demons are impressive, his appreciation for Fiona’s intelligence is moreso. It’s such a beautiful GG (grand gesture for the uninitiated).

Their first conversation includes her solving an equation he’d been contemplating extensively in his lab with one glance.
“Would you like your little sigil to function properly or not?...
“You have me curious…go on then, bossy witch. Astound me.”

And astound him she does. But he’s too cranky to admit it.

“Not bad, bossy witch.” His tail thumped her once in the back, hard enough to jostle her.

I think to really understand the GG here you need to read the entire series to get the full effect of Eli’s GG. Because it’s a GG but not in the way we would normally interpret it, he does it because she’s earned it.

In each Prater work, at some point, the hero has stepped back or aside to let the heroine speak their truth to power and supported them. In life, isn’t that what we are all looking for? A partner that lets us fly and be there to support us if we fall? That being said, these couples all feel like equal partnerships, no one has more power in the relationship structure. While Eli is vocal about his feelings for Fiona, she knows that control of the relationship lies with her. If she decides to leave, that’s her decision, and hers alone.

Guys, I love these books so hard. I can’t wait to see where we head next - I’m waiting for full witch domination.

Vive la révolution des sorcières!

A fun and super imaginative retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It had steam punk vibes, magic and demons and science mixed through amazing world building that left me glued to the book. I read it in a single day, holding my breath as the story unfolded. I adored the characters, they were so perfect for each other. There were many deeply emotional moments too, with the topic of overcoming/learning to live with the loss of a loved one being covered. Another great book by Prater!

Fiona, a witch and scientist, behaves unprofessionally at her university job and ends up being forced to spend the summer at the manor of the infamous scientist Dr. Beast, a scientist cursed by a demon in a fight, as his assistant, she believes it will be a summer of mystery. What she doesn't expect is for both herself and her magic to be inexplicably drawn to the doctor... or the demons and poltergeists that inhabit the woods both around the mansion and the tower itself. This book is a witchy retelling of the classic Beauty and the Beast with some tension, demons, and spice.

This was an adorable book. I really loved both characters and the magic element was such a cool twist on the classic Beauty and the Beast fairytale. Both of the characters were likeable and were great together from the first few pages. I wish the book had been a bit longer so that the story could have been further developed and the characters could have been developed a bit more so that the reader could connect with them in more depth, but overall it was great! I'm glad that I read it and it definitely could be one that I circle back to and read again in the future!

This book is sooooo hot and sexy! It reminded me of Beauty and the Beast - a favorite. She's a spunky witch with a heart of kindness and never ending sass. He's a grumpy workaholic beast. There are tricky evil demons, poltergeist and cute robots. As they become closer will they be able to set aside their grief and learn to trust? I received this ARC from Book Sirens and this is my honest review.

This is an amazing book! It’s like beauty and the beast (slightly) but witchy and a THOUSAND times better!!
I loved this tale (and his tail) so much!
I wonder if we can talk S.L. Prater into writing an extended epilogue about their wedding!!
This book was so amazing and I love it so much!

First off, the ending was so sweet- I just HAD to mention that.
Second, I really enjoyed this retelling of Beauty and the Beast- the author is creative and definitely made the story their own.
Third, the main character is a little too immature in my opinion, she just came off too dramatic and childish, however I understand she is trying to process her emotions.
Overall, Of Roses and Rituals is a solid book, and I loved being in this magical world.

Thank you for the ARC!

A fun and very steamy gaslamp Beauty and the Beast retelling. The heroine is a researcher sent to an isolated castle to act as the hero's assistant. The hero has horns and hooves thanks to a curse from many years ago - but unlike many B&B retellings, the story isn't about solving the hero's curse. Instead, it's a gentle romance about two grieving hearts learning to be vulnerable again. A cozy high-heat comfort read.

I enjoyed this more then I thought I would. This has been one of my first fairy tale retelling I’ve read. It was short but also quite enjoyable. This world was easy to get lost in. I loved reading this book and it has been one of my favourite books I’ve read this year so far.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I fell into the world of Kriegspiel witches when I picked up the author's previous listed ARC, and I was delighted to see the sequel go up a couple of weeks ago.

And as you can see by my rating, well, it's OBVIOUSLY also a good one!

Where the first was a Robin Hood retelling, this sequel book is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, and I have to admit: I may have a crush on Dr. Beast myself now. I'm also actually kinda happy he didn't turn back into his usual, mortal form, because lets' face it: nobody wanted the prince! We all wanted the Beast LOL.

Our "Beauty" is an academic, but recovering from the death of her beloved six years prior, and is a bit of a wild card, which is why her father sends her up to Dr. "Beast" so that she might get herself straightened out. And once she arrives there, not only do the magics she and the good scientist have bond, but there's also a demonic possession mystery to uncover, an actual article to write, fatal attraction to give in to ... and emotions to handle.

This last is probably not handled all too well all the time, but a good book is nothing with some emotional drama along the way!

I was immediately taken with this version of the Beast, and I honestly thought he was mostly just grouchy rather than dangerous. Plus he shows he has a big heart, and he isn't afraid of going for what he wants, which is a refreshing take besides just sitting there and not doing anything.

Beauty (I keep calling her that, sorry!), however, I couldn't quite connect with. Very obviously, most of what she does in the book and 3/4 of her actions are fueled by the promise she makes herself after her loss, however, I don't do well with abrasive people like her in general. People who just trample other people's clearly set boundaries set my teeth on edge, and she saw everything presented to her as a challenge to somehow overcome - whether logically, or more often simply by flinging so much words at a wall it's a wonder she didn't build her own additional walls with them!

Overall, however, I enjoyed the growth the couple experienced together, and loved the tie-in with the previous book gifted by Little John. I think it's a fun. steampunk academia romance to lose yourself in, and I'll probably be picking up the follow-up to this book if there ever is one.

Retellings, when done right, are a bomb to read!

¿Cómo no conocía yo a esta autora y estos libros?

*I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.*

Retelling of a fairytale? Check.

A favorite fairytale? Check.

Beauty and the Beast retelling? Check.

This very steamy story of curses and forced closeness was so much better than I honestly imagined. The story of Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorites, because I love that there are sometimes and some people who just need the right person to see past the gruff and maybe unpleasant exterior to see the good heart inside. In this story, that doesn’t just apply to Dr. Beast as curses aren't always just a person's appearance.

I watched a documentary of Petrus and Catherine Gonsalvus, a possible inspiration piece of the look of a beast to the Beauty and the Beast story in animal bridegroom story tropes. One thing that stuck out to me was the fact that not only was Petrus Gonsalvus educated as a nobility and his wife Catherine was a Lady, but when Petrus and Catherine were painted, her hand rested on his shoulder. This was only shown when the couple being painted actually cared for each other.

Of Roses and Rituals isn’t a Stockholm syndrome story. There are curses abound, but there isn’t falling in love with one’s captor. It feels very much like the story of Petrus and Catherine Gonsalvus. There is a mutual regard of respect and equality between Fiona and Elias. A friendship develops and active supporting each other in the face of problems, challenges, and curses.

I am giving a copy to my sister, because she needs to read this book!

Oh my goodness! When I first saw this on BookSirens, I knew I had to get it. One, because I follow SL Prater on instagram, and two, because I knew they had a Beauty & The Beast retelling in the works — and I’m so glad I’m able to review this. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

First, everyone knows I’m a sucker for a wild, can’t be tamed, stubborn FMC; and that’s exactly what Prater gives us. Fiona is a witch who is a bit reckless but full of spirit and fire, which I love. It’s obviously she has commitment issues (girl same here), and that she is basically a playgirl in her town. However, that all changes whenever she is sent to Dr Beast’s aka Elias’ castle as an assistant for the summer.

Dr Beast, or rather Elias, is an intelligent scholar who has been praised not only for his scholarly articles, but praised for saving a village from demons. Talk about swoon worthy. Smart AND heroic? Elias had my heart so early in the book. Plus he has a tail and horns, and uses them for ~spicy~ play.

Of Roses and Rituals is a standalone set in the world of the Street Witch series. The characters aren’t directly connected to that series, though you might end up wishing for a bit more worldbuilding. Luckily, you can always dive into the main series afterwards 😄

This is a Beauty and the Beast retelling—with more bite and definitely more spice. Honestly, I didn’t expect quite this much smut, but I’m one of those people who doesn’t mind it in books—and here? It just works (and is really well written, too!).

Despite the heavy dose of spice, the story is incredibly wholesome. The main characters’ backstories were genuinely moving, and (no joke) I cried more than once—even though I’d still call the book cozy overall. It’s a story full of trauma, yes, but also full of healing—and I truly loved how it all came together. Hats off, Stephanie! You’ve once again turned my brain into emotional pulp 🫠

I’m writing this review a month after finishing the book, and I still miss the story, the characters, and the whole vibe. It might be my new comfort read—and while it’s definitely not perfect (and maybe too spicy for some), I’d still happily recommend it to any romantasy lover.

Tropes:
trauma rep & healing, he falls first, smutty, cursed MMC, witty FMC, grumpy x sunshine, meddling demons, unique magic system, supportive family, HEA, main scientist x assistant

thank you booksirens for this arc, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

omg ok let me start off with the immaculate beauty and the beast vibes

my favourite disney movie so this ticked off every box for me!

i loved both characters so much fiona and elias

THE LOVE CONFESSIONS JUST THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THEM 🥰🥰🥰🥰

i think elias was a very detailed character with his past being discussed and how he has become the person who he is when we first meet and learn more about him.

fiona i felt was quite a feisty and a woman who was able to speak her mind no matter what. but at some points she was quite bland i would say.

i think the message is clear though how we can all move on from past relationships and find that someone who is the one and really blossom with them and cherish them in a new relationship.

it was good to see them help each other with their grief but to also have that fun light hearted side!

some parts with thom and the other ‘bad guy’ did confuse me.

BUT other than that i totally recommend this book and i would definitely read more from S.L. Prater

Beauty and the beast but with a witch and he stays 'cursed'. It also made me weepy and I wasn't prepared for that.
Sassy witch. Grumpy cursed scientist 'Priest'. In a steampunk world where magic is just another fact of life. Magics intertwining, sentient roses, automatons, demons, losses, curses, big old haunted house - this story is packed but it never seems too much.
The reason it's only a 4 rather than the 4.5 it almost was is that there was an event almost at the very end that just seemed to come out of nowhere and felt a little rushed. The event was relevant, the pacing just seemed off for me - I'm guessing it was meant to surprise me but it kinda just through me off a little. Nothing major overall, just that small niggle.

Thanks to BookSirens for the review copy in exchange for my honest review.

I was expecting this book to be a Beauty and the Beast fairytale like romance, but this was so much more!

The story is set in a world with priests and witches where magical things happen. I am impressed with how SL Prater portrayed this world. I did not read any of het other books featured in this world and I was in no way confused or feeling like I was missing something.
Our Beauty Fiona is in no way an innocent village girl and I LOVE that! Give me a sassy heroine any day. It’s her essence and sassiness that makes our Beast open up. He is quite lovely our beast and I think it takes a special kind of talent to make a monster hot. And I mean HOT!
The spicy level is 5 out of 5 - perfect if you ask me ;). Enjoy your read!!

Fantastic world-building. A wonderful gaslamp, steampunk, witch, and demon world you won't forget. The vibe carries all the way through. This is a Beauty and the Beast retelling where beauty is a witch and the beast is a mix of mystical things. I laughed off and on and I loved how this felt like an adult version of a Disney show with steam. The steam is around a 3.5 for me and I loved how it weaved into the plot. Nothing suffers here. Plot, steam, and world-building are all fantastic. This has stronger language than her other books and it fits perfectly into the story. This book might be my favorite so far. -I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
