“She may look like the Little Red Riding Hood, but she really is the wolf.”
Julia is a werewolf who turned against her pack and saved an innocent life. As a reward for her good deed, she ends up in prison, but thrives while others like her waste away.
On the eve of a full moon, an unknown benefactor arranges for Julia’s release. Faced with the prospect of returning to the city that nearly killed her, she opts to disappear into the surrounding woods.
This is the opportunity she needs to find herself and reconnect with the wild. As her past resurfaces, the supernatural and dark elements within humanity take notice of her.
Before reading on, be sure to consider: She may look like the Little Red Riding Hood, but she really is the wolf.
Evelyn Chartres is the nom de plume for a self-published, Canadian author. The writer of nine Gothic fantasy novels, Evelyn released her debut novel, The Portrait, in 2016, and her latest, Man of War, in 2024.
A fan of the phrase ‘live to eat’, Evelyn shares her recipes on evelynchartres.com. These recipes have a loose focus on French-Canadian cuisine, featuring deep-dish meat pies, seafood, and desserts that are rarely seen outside of La Belle Province.
Evelyn is currently living in Ottawa, Ontario, and is busy laying the foundations of another book in the Adventures of Clara Grey series.
Take a journey with an unlikely hero. Julia may have had a past ridden with tragedy and trauma, but she is determined to start a new chapter in her life. She is an admirable character unwilling to break under the pressure of events to come.
Some Critical Points:
There are some transitions in early scenes that are quick and confusing at first.
The content warnings ought to be detailed in the section of book information.
Overall, the world Evelyn paints is enriched with new looks into the supernatural creatures we all enjoy.
In Dark Hearts, Evelyn expands her literary universe even further with her latest main character Julia, whom we first met as a supporting character in the Van Helsing novels. Julia's story is an especially intriguing one, a werewolf with no real memory of her past until events conspire to bring those back to her through her dreams. Along the way she also comes into contact with other new characters, some with good intentions and many with ill. And it's through these two threads that Evelyn expertly shows how Jula grows both in her waking experiences and dreamt revelations, all pulled together in a dark fantasy tapestry that only Evelyn could weave. Highly recommend!
As someone who enjoys lycanthropic literature, this one was quite enjoyable.
Julia is a likeable enough character that you sympathize with her plight and there are enough twists and turns that keep you guessing as to where the book will go next.
If you like werewolves, I recommend this short, but intriguing read.
Gripping from start to finish! Julia may look like Little Red Riding Hood, but she's the wolf... love it! A thrilling mix of werewolf lore and dark suspense, I couldn't put it down.
Dark Hearts by Evelyn Chartres takes you into the dysfunctional life of a young woman who is traumatized by the dark history of her family and werewolf pack betrayal. Haunted by the repressed memories of those who loved and tried to save her, she escapes into the mountains to try to avoid human contact and to find solace.
During her trek to accept the darkness within her, she stumbles upon the sinister secret of a human pack, which makes her old werewolf pack seem like kittens. To survive, she'll have to embrace who she is.
Chartres has a talent for writing intriguing stories with plenty of twists and turns to keep your interest. Dark Hearts isn't your typical werewolf story, as Chartres puts her unique touch and takes you deep into this dark world, which will leave you screaming for more.
A gripping, dark tale that follows Julia, a lone werewolf who doesn't fit with her pack, has a penchant for helping strangers, and was recently released from prison. After her release, she finds herself wandering in the woods, only to stumble upon an insidious plot. With limited memory of her own past, we follow Julia's tale as she slowly recovers the memories she has lost, all while discovering that even in a world full of strange creatures, humans are the real monsters. The strong world building and engaging characters make for an excellent read. Would recommend for readers who love dark fantasy and grimdark horror.
