Drawing on their unparallel knowledge of the Jack the Ripper murders and their professional experience as police officers, the two doyens of serious Ripper writing join forces for the first time to write the definitive book on the case from the perspective of the police investigation. As the title declares, this is the complete investigation and is full of new insights and information on the murders and who might have committed them. The authors reopen every aspect of the case and offer a balanced account that does not favor any one suspect or motive. By viewing the case through the lens of police procedure, they have uncovered clues and links that have remained undetected for more than a hundred years. Evans and Rumbelow also extend the investigation beyond the “canonical” five victims and add other murders investigated at the same time that bring the total to twelve. This study strips away much of the nonsense that has accumulated since 1888 and draws the reader into the world of police investigation in Victorian London, reopening files on a case that will perhaps never be solved, but will always fascinate.
The finest work on the Whitechapel murderer it is possible to own. So good, I stole my copy... its packed with photographs, case sketches and police files; this is like a CSI kit for solving the case. I believe this book names the two suspects with certainty; closing it down to two (In my opinion) is a major breakthrough that has gone un-noticed by the media and public.
This is the best book on the Jack the Ripper. This book is based entirely on the existing police records and newspaper stories. There is no agenda, everything is here. They cover the entire list of Whitechaple murders. There are actually nine and all the analysis is give, by the police at that time, of each murder, which are considered ripper murders and those that are not, plus every suspect that was considered by the police and administration. Also added are excerpts from books that the involved police wrote after retirement. Every analysis is straightforward. Just one warning, there is more here than you ever wanted to know about the situation.
Had this book a while as I bought it when a book shop near me was closing down. I had no time to read this or any other of my books till lockdown and so happy I have began to read this. Insightful look in to the murders, the police and the author knows his stuff. He also doesn't make claims of knowing who Jack was, which was a refreshing change.
Excellent insight into the political workings, Scotland Yard hierarchy & investigation into the Whitechapel murders of 1888. Highly recommend for anyone requiring information about the detectives & police officers who were involved in the case, as this book is told in a most constructive & well-informed way. A great read.
A book which looks not only at the Ripper murders, but also looks at the police force, the politics and the people at the time around the murder. Written by a person who seems to know his subject, without coming up with any bizarre notion of proclaiming the killer as....as some authors seem to do.
