Dakota lives in the gorgeous state of Oregon with her real life hero and her dogs, and she loves hearing from readers!
This book didn't keep my attention very much. I kept putting it down and coming back to it. It was just too slow for my taste. I thought the heroine was too wishy-washy and the hero deserved better.
I really want to give this book 4.5 stars. The only reason I hold back is because I hate the stereo type female who falls back on the ' I've been hurt before so every asshole after will hurt me too' excuse. Now the saving grace is Brian's likeability and unwillingness to let Callie slink off to wallow some more. Together they are a great couple and I loved the pacing of their relationship. Nothing happened too fast or too slow. It makes me believe in decent men who are willing to fight for their country and their women! Hoo Rah!
Not the usual LOL that Dakota Cassidy is known for. If you like a sappy and/or angst ridden love story then this book is for you. I will consider this a one-off and give her next book a chance. She's earned my loyalty!
Despite the fact that I wanted to shake the FMC once in a while, and I sometimes had trouble understanding the way her brain worked, I really liked this story.
I have never read a female character as insecure as Callie Winston. Every time she goes into her "I'm not good enough" speech I just want to slap her in the face and kick her in the Shin coz that's how annoying Callie is. What's worse is that she totally blames her insecurities to her ex husband Frank, granted that he was a lying/cheating SOB. She couldn't even admit that she is partly to blame in her predicament. Frank treated her like dirt because she wouldn't stand up for herself and just accepted whatever crap he throws at her. The only redeeming point I could give her is that she was the one who left their marriage first.
She has so much baggage in her life that even the male lead in the book said something along the lines of "Christ, this woman needs a therapist." I really couldn't see what he sees in her.
Its only because its fiction that we are guaranteed a happy ending for those two, no thanks to Callie by the way. She pushed Brian away from her because the guy wasn't able to call her two days after they boinked together (the guy has a valid excuse FYI). She just gave up on the guy without really trying hard to contact him to find out his side of the story. Her BFF Katherine yelled at her to stop her stupid assumptions but no... our dear Callie just wouldn't listen because in her mind she already made up the reason why they shouldn't be together (some of her stupid reasons are: she didn't want to be hurt again, he's not serious about her, he's using her for sex, he'd be bored with her YADA YADA YADA...)
In the end, her BFF contacted the guy and explained Callie's "stupidity". Thankfully the guy didn't run the opposite way after all the crap she gave the guy. They plan to marry by the way. Good Luck to them.
