Sister Seekers #8

Battle for Manalar

Rate this book
My sister is in grave danger, captive in the city of Witch Hunters. As Manalar prepares for war, her only chance lies with infiltrators from Augran. I shall join them. I failed one sister. I will not fail another. The prosperous port of Augran thrives in diverse trade with the Dwarven Clans. The Bishops of Manalar have withdrawn defiantly into the Temple of the Sun, scorning their past allies.

The Ma’ab Empire has sent their dark army out of the Far North, seeking not riches but a small, well-protected spring high upon a mountain. The sacred pool of Manalar is said to bless all mages who control it.

On the fringe, there’s Gavin and me. Each dedicated to our purpose, we garner allies from Augran and the Clans of Taiding willing to see them through. My Dragonblood bodyguard, Mourn, reinforces our strengths as we expect others like us to jump out of hiding and into the fray.

Sirana’s desperate search upon the Surface reaches its culmination in Battle for Manalar, where foes and allies unite and clash in this transformative event driven by opportunity, righteousness, and reprisal.

Sister Seekers is dark epic fantasy for adults. With an ever-broadening scope, it is perfect for fans who enjoy character-driven plots, challenging themes, elements of erotic horror, and immersive worldbuilding. Etaski writes DnD-style Epic Fantasy with expansive worldbuilding and large casts. We start with an Abyssal underground city, dark and disturbing, gradually moving out into the light. Interconnected plots and tones weave through character discoveries, where they sometimes learn from their mistakes. Found Family is a core theme throughout her world.

"Sister Seekers" begins with an isolated race of Dark Elves in "No Demons But Us." Perfect for fans of entwined plots across multiple books, mature and challenging themes, and immersive worlds which include strong elements of horror and the erotic. We explore sexuality and inner conflict with nuance, intrigue, action, and fantastical magic.

Sadly, DNF @24%, I wanted to continue but I kept chipping away at it with less and less motivation as the days went by. I just don't feel I can finish this one even though it's been what the last 4 books have lead up to.

These past few books have felt like they're filled to the brim with filler content. This one feels especially so, with pages upon pages filled with detailed descriptions of the most mundane and temporary locations. There are so many characters thrown into the plot and the more that get added the less it feels like any of them have a solid reason to be there.

Mourn never grew on me, which is a shame because it seems like he's almost more of the main character than Sirana at this point. He has never gotten out of the typical 'shadow daddy' trope and it's gotten so old to me. It was nice to see Sirana be able to come to a moment of grief and anger regarding her treatment in the past, it made her feel much more alive than she's felt recently. Also seeing her mindlink ability progressing was fascinating.

This book has gone bonkers with italics. I don't even understand why things are italicized most of the time in this one. There are multi-paragraph spans for no reason that are italics, maybe the dialogue or a bit of information is understandable to be emphasized within it but the large chunks of italics really dulls the meaning and pulls me out of the immersion.

I miss the deepearth and the intrigue that came with it, it feels like the series has lost it's charm for me but I will always consider the first three books to be some of my favorites that I've read.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I did love that things just pick back up from the previous book. I am usually trying to rush through battle scenes but in this case I didn't. The whole thing was so well told and contained plot instead of just fight scenes. It all left me wanting more of the story in the best way.

I cannot rave about this book enough. The story is incredible, the writing is top-tier, and the action is riveting. Add to that some nicely explicit spice, and this book deserves to be on your shelf!

The story takes you through the siege of a city from start to finish and finally brings about a long-awaited reunion with one of my favorite characters in the series.
