Mediocre instructional manual, which I should have known from the title/series. The lack of photographs and examples is a disadvantage on the whole. Replacing photos of actual calligraphy with goofy clip art is a poor decision. I don't recommend it. The one plus is the clear and large-sized font examples with clearly indicated stroke orders. Again, it is just traditional, broad-pen calligraphy that is covered here.
I purchased this book recently to refresh my memory on various calligraphy techniques that I'd studied many years ago. I found it a very useful and thorough introduction to calligraphy (western). It introduces a variety of fonts/typefaces giving step-by-step instructions, run downs of the various tools available, tips, advice on how to finish a work of calligraphy, and even ideas on how to sell or receive commissioned calligraphy work.
