Hearing that the British Red Cross were recruiting truck drivers to deliver relief supplies in the active conflict zones of the former Yugoslavia, Roger thought the work sounded interesting. What he experienced during his mission with the International Committee of the Red Cross proved to be much more. Living the realities of humanitarian relief work and witnessing the tragedies of what war could do and did to its civilian victims, was life-changing.
Roger Fowler’s rich memoir chronicles the wins and losses, joys and heartbreak of providing humanitarian relief to suffering civilians and displaced persons. With tenacity, determination and humour, Roger takes the reader with him through his adventures from escorting convoys across front lines to being in the middle of the largest and final battle of the Croatian War of Independence – Operation Storm.
Roger Fowler had a life-altering experience when he signed up with the British Red Cross to work as a truck driver in the former Yugoslavia. In An Accidental Humanitarian he describes his life on the frontline in vivid detail from the memorable people he met to the atrocities of the war he witnessed. Some scenes were particularly poignant, like delivering supplies to destitute elderly, and some scenes were humorous, like the story of the stray dog that followed him around. Roger weaves daily life as a truck driver and logistics manager into the bigger sweep of history. A remarkable story.
This book is very enlightening and educational about International Red Cross and humanitarian workers in conflict and war zones. This book is also an easy read.
Fast, fun read, a lot of knowledge and experience I'd have never known ever unless the Author had wrote and shared it. Hope he writes something about his truck driving adventures in the middle east too.
