M.G. Herron is the author of Starfighter Down, Culture Shock, and more than a dozen other science fiction novels.
His work spans military space opera, sci-fi detective noir, and portal fiction—stories about first contact, ancient alien civilizations, and the encounters that defy reality and make your neck hairs stand on end. His books have sold over 100,000 copies worldwide and been licensed for production by Podium Entertainment, Audible Studios and Plotsy.tv.
Matt (as he’s known among family and friends) started writing science fiction because he couldn't find enough books that blended the wonder of epic space sagas with characters he actually wanted to spend time with. So he wrote them himself.
These days he lives in Austin, Texas with his patient wife, their four unruly kids, and one loyal canine sidekick. When he's not at his desk, he's probably reading—or hiking in the Greenbelt while daydreaming about his next book.
M.G. Herron is a brand-new author for me, but after listening to this, I'm fully hooked. This three-book space adventure was an absolute blast from start to finish. The narrator completely nailed it—the delivery, the pacing, and the emphasis were spot-on throughout the entire performance. As for the story itself, the scope expands naturally across the trilogy, backed by fantastic character work that made it feel like I was right there in the cockpit alongside the crew. Just when I thought I had things figured out, Herron threw in a few genuinely surprising twists that kept me guessing. It’s fast-paced, immersive, and wildly entertaining sci-fi.
A quick heads-up for prospective listeners: While the tone and style feel geared toward a Young Adult audience, the story does feature some surprisingly graphic violence and explicit drug use, so keep that in mind before diving in.
Overall, I thoroughly loved this series and will definitely be keeping an eye out for more audiobooks from M.G. Herron!
Ahhh, so satisfying! I love every page! The end was definitely unexpected! The dialog is crisp and goes well with each character. There’s so much excellent tension in this book and the character growth is great. We had some revelations that we’ve been waiting on for a while now. And of course, I love Miss Hedgebot! :)
I thoroughly enjoyed this entire trilogy, but all the elements developed in the first two volumes plus new surprises came together skillfully here leading to an action packed and satisfying ending.
Highly recommended
I discovered this series just in time for volume 4 to launch on Kickstarter and bought it without hesitation.
What a fantastic book! Aliens, scary aliens at that, and humans fighting them, but using ancient artifacts and brilliant modern starfighters. I loved the flying scenes, and found there were sufficient twists and turns, interspersed with enough action to keep this adrenaline junkie satisfied! The characters are great, and have developed well during the three main books, with a general feeling of satisfaction when things are concluded. But, oh, I shall certainly miss Hedgebot. Perhaps Hedgebot should get a series of her own? Please, nice author??
unusual ending to a great space opera. The artifacts turned out to be more interesting than anticipated. Overmind X had a last-gasp effort that was unanticipated. Very good series.
A hefty concluding book in this series as the search for the Relics continues in a race with the enemy Kryl. Probably not a good starting point! However this is a more than satisfying end to the run.
