When a man cheats on you, abuses people and tortures his own brother for fun, you do not simply think, woooow but he loves me, and has been so sweet to me. So I’ll ignore all his transgressions because he gave me pretty gifts.
This was ludicrous to me. The way Roisin thinks is not of a ruler but of a silver spooned princess with zero self thinking.
Roisin was a head case.
I honestly couldn’t stand her. All through out the book she was doing nothing, besides having picnics and eating sweets. Except towards the end when she spoke of change for her people.
Also she was a bully. She let her friend pick on people, throw food at Caiman and other horrible things.
This is not how a Queen acts!
This is how a very very misbehaved toddler acts and even most toddlers don’t act like this.

So, I was very interested in this series because it seemed just up my alley and I'm still very excited for some of the books to come, but this was not good. It basically went from meh to trash and the way some stuff was portrayed really rubbed me the wrong way.
Also, there was Caiman. He's like his own point on my quite long list of why this book was a flop.

Where do I begin? At the beginning, maybe. It took forever to pick up, but fine, I can sit through a slow-ish opening if it pays off... It didn't. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
The reason this wasn't a straight 1* was partially the worldbuilding because it was actually very intriguing. The setting, everything that was going on politically, was done very well. And then there was the way Roisin actually felt guilty for her preemptive judgment in the middle. That right there was my one spark of hope for this book. That half-star.
Then, of course, it went down the drain.
I also actually enjoyed Roisin's friend as a character. She was a nice contrast to Roisin herself and had good depth. Her arc surprised me and was believable, and well-portrayed.
Everything else was a disaster. The main characters, the horribly executed miscommunication, the inconsistencies in how some stuff was portrayed (especially Alrec), and the gaping inequality in the romance... I don't like "he falls first" tendentially, but this was on another level.
At first, I kind of liked Roisin. She was kind, loyal, and a basic but alright written ENFJ... I got a little mad at her for her lack of confrontational drive, then forgave her when she actually felt bad for the miscommunication and set it straight. If only we had stayed at that...
I 100% don't understand what that bs at the end was supposed to be. It ruined her character for me and honestly was quite ooc to be salty over basically nothing for a literal month.
Something else that rubbed me the wrong way about her was how she clung to Alrec. Bruh, wtf... he was a literal abuser, the moment you find stuff like that out about someone you rejoice that he is dead and that you did NOT have to marry him... She had no issues hating Caiman over rumors, and then she clings to Alrec even though his abusive nature was a proven fact? Everything about how she was thinking back to him—like the version of him she thought she "loved" actually existed—the way she refused to drown his gifts in the ocean, the way she freaking told Caiman that she wouldn't forget him... I was actually cringing with pure disgust.
I don't think that was the intent, but it was creating this distorted image that glossed over the things he did, as if they weren't worth hating someone for. As if they were forgivable. "He loved her"? Bruh, he treated her like a possession, cheated on her, and so much worse. Alrec can go die in a fire, I will happily dance on his grave. And it upsets me how none of these characters are willing to join me.
Don't even get me started on Caiman. Prince of Darkness my a**. He's a whiny, spineless simp who has so little self-esteem he'd pine over a girl for literal years and not even bother TRYING to tell her that his brother is a violent abuser. What do you want, for her to actually marry him? To probably be abused and potentially r*ped... who knows what he would have done. Not to mention, you would let that kind of guy—IDC if he's your brother—drive your kingdom into war and just sit on the side, thinking about how things should be, but when it comes to acting, you chicken out. And then the one time you DO act, and I finally think "is he actually growing a spine", you proceed to feel guilty for it for the rest of the book... no thanks. Looping INTJs are the worst. His Te is like, hiding up on a tree or sth, and it's painful.
The fact that this man had the audacity to think that his brother—the same one who would have caused a war on a childish impulse, who cared more about statues and prestige than his people—would have been the better king, would make me laugh if it weren't so sad.
In short, Caiman is one of the worst male leads I've read in a long time. He's weak, insecure, spineless, and utterly without standards. Not to mention, he would have watched the woman he "loved" marry an abuser. Why? I've read the book and I don't f*cking know.
I have two quotes to describe why and when this "romance" completely lost me. They're only like, one page apart as well:
Caiman: "I don't mind sharing your heart as long as there is a little room left for me."
Roisin: "I wanted him to love all of me."
... Yeah no, that was it for me. The last ounce of respect I had for either of them left at that moment. Classifying and summarizing why and on how many levels this is disgusting and wrong actually broke my Te (this is a first), sorry you will have to take the quotes as they are.
I feel like this book was way too indecisive about whether to portray Alrec as the abuser he was. On one hand, it was describing all the horrible things he had done and was willing to do, and then it was rowing back, saying stuff like that he loved Roisin (which he clearly didn't, as shown by his actions), or that his death was a tragedy (sorry but it really wasn't). His actions, as they were, didn't warrant him being remembered this positively, or being glossed over.
That said, he was still a better and more consistent character than either of the MCs. He was a hateable antagonist, but his manipulation, self-glorification, and impulsivity were well-written and felt real. The only thing that was messed up was the way he was remembered, later.

... Sigh, I am keeping my hopes high for the rest of these because they're standalones from different authors but I am so done with how bad this was, especially the ending.
Give me a guy who WON'T sit idly, watching a girl enter a toxic marriage. Who will slam his hand down and save her... like anyone who actually cared, would. Who will swoop in and slap the abuser, no matter who he is (or, yk, realistically, collect evidence, gather allies and witnesses, and then expose him). WHERE IS A BOOK LIKE THAT I NEED IT.
Anyway, I do not recommend this book. It had a very unenjoyable romance, a terrible male lead, and some very fishy stances on how to remember and portray an abuser.
It's on you whether you give it a go or not. But don't say I didn't warn you.

I actually really enjoyed this book. While it is short and somehow took me almost three days to read, it was still enjoyable. I liked that there were so many unexpected things that happened. The plot was interesting. The characters were likable. I liked seeing the inner turmoil in Caiman. Roisin was an amazing character as well. BUT the ending happened and it just wasn't what I wanted or expected. Plus what in the world was with the epilogue?? I've read some pretty bad epilogues before but THAT was probably the worst one. I am still giving this one 4 stars though because I enjoyed it up until the end of the story.

Married by Fate is the second book within the Arranged Marriages of the Fae series.
In this, you will meet Lady Roisin, Prince Alrec, and Prince Calman. She is soon to become queen and marry the heir, Prince Alrec. Yet, she has a wondering eye for the second heir, Prince Calman. It doesn't help that he's also in love with her either but can do nothing about it due to his older brother. Between the two? I would have picked Calman every single day. It didn't seem like Alrec even liked Roisin... he was definitely more in love with himself.
Just like the first book this one flew by. With so much tension, betrayal, and romance - how could a book go by slowly? I definitely enjoyed this one and even liked the little surprise at the end. I figured she couldn't truly be by herself within that kingdom and was happy to be right.
Definitely excited to jump into the next book of the series!

The opening on this book wasn't that bad, but it got steadily worse. Neither main characters had much depth or were likable. Near the ned everything happened so fast to get the love interests together that their "love" seems faker than the love she had for the abusive-dead brother

Jenny Hickman has become one of those authors where I already know I will enjoy her books prior to reading them or just from the first page alone. Married by Fate was such a cute, quick and fast-paced read. There is also somewhat of an enemies to lovers trope in this book that was written so well.
Roisin was a likable main character, although she could get a BIT frustrating at some points. But honestly, I think that is what makes her a great character. No person/character is perfect, in this case Roisin was far from it, but it was nice to be able to learn who she truly is alongside her. Who she could trust and even if she could trust herself and her own judgement at some point. Her character arc was not rushed and it felt true and realistic, which I enjoyed in a fast paced book.
Caiman was so different from other MMCs I have read about previously. He wasn't the self assured male character, who was a fierce warrior and a complete flirt. Caiman was an adorable cinnamon roll who doubted himself and his abilities plenty of times, and even struggled with trusting himself and finding himself worthy of his throne, among other things/people who he cares. He was a very self conscious character whose growth was amazing to see. I would have loved to see more of him after the events at the end of the book, but I am happy with his ending.
If you are looking for a quick romantic fantasy read, this book is for you. If you love books that include some what of a forbidden love between the main pair, this book is for you. Love a bit of enemies to lovers? This book is for you. Did you recently discover Jenny's books and are wondering if this book is worth the read, the answer is yes! I definitely recommend it!

What I really like about series like this is that you never really know what to expect from a story or book. There is a common theme, Fae are getting married, but apart from that the authors are all free to tell their own story, to do their own thing, to create their own world. And I don't read the blurbs of the books. I like to be surprised and hopefully even amazed. I was therefore really excited to dive into this book, written by a for me new author.
And what a beautiful story was this! The books in this series might be relatively short, but the authors are doing an amazing job with the few pages they have. Especially in this book I really fell in love with the characters. I was rooting for them so hard that I spent the second half of the book almost terrified that something bad would happen to them, even though I knew that somehow there would be a happy ending.
I also really loved the politics in this book. And there was so much politics! The politics on the bigger scale, considering the war and the enemy's ships a little too close to the coast for comfort. But also the politics on a much smaller scale, between the two brothers. This book also really showed how much power king and crown prince can have and what that means for the people who are not them, how stories are twisted and lies become common knowledge.
Although we see only a relatively small part of the world in this book, I really got the feeling the world was huge. Not because the author spent a lot of time explaining the world to us, but more because of throwaway lines, discussions about other kingdoms and partnerships, namedropping of Isles and kings. I somehow wish we had more time in this world and could see more places and read more stories. I hope the author will consider it!

Note: English is not my mother tongue, so kindly gliss over anything that might be worded weirdly and apologies if I might sound unpolite, as that is absolutely not my intention: I'm very grateful to Jenny for sharing her writing with me and she sounds like a very nice person.
SPOILERS IN THE SECOND PART OF THE REVIEW (warning before the part).
Now, onto what I think of the book (100% personal opinion, so others might not agree).
Overall this was a pleasant and interesting reading, to the point that I would have probably finished it in one sit if it wasn't for other personal commitments. However, I feel like the main characters kept on changing their mind and behaviour. The author pointed out on her Instagram that the characters are 18 and 19 and to not look for MCs who have everything all figured out, and I tried to keep it in mind while reading but... I don't know, I found myself keeping on reminding me of that as if to condone their actions.
I also felt like I couldn't 100% understand some of their train of thoughts. The two instances that stuck out the most to me are (SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!):
1) Roisin tells Caiman she overheard him say she was a monster and that's basically why she started hating him and chose his brother 4 years earlier.
I was like "oh, finally the misunderstanding is going to get cleared and Caiman is gonna understand why she was so hostile towards him!"... Nope. Caiman gets angry? Because she didn't go and ask him "hey, heard you say I'm disgusting, how come?"... Dude... Who would? Why are you angry instead of relieved it was all a big misunderstanding?
2) It gets revealed that Alrec decided to go with the soldiers into the attack during which he dies after fighting with Caiman. Roisin understands (as everyone else in the council room, as it's described later on) that it's not really Caiman's fault because his brother decided himself it was some kind of challenge and brought death on himself... But she gets angry Caiman lied to her about it (aka he didn't tell her about the fight) and stays cold to him for one month, until he almost gets killed... I don't know... I felt like it was an unreasonable thing to get angry about... She has been discovering Alrec fed her lies about his brother and basically abused him... And instead of seeing this new revelation as discovering yet another show of awful character from her almost husband, she focused on the detail of Caiman, who is finally showing her how sweet and caring he is, not sharing a private conversation with her. Why not asking him why he "hid" it, since it was that important to her?
Probably some other reader would understand the characters' perspective and think I'm critiquing something that makes perfect sense to them, but this is how I personally felt. I suppose it comes down to personal opinions.
Anyways, as I previously said, I DID enjoy this book, though not to the point of giving 5 stars, so it was absolutely not a waste of time. We can sum it up to the MCs not being my cup of tea, though I did appreciate how the writer tried to convey how conflicted both of them were because of what they had experienced (reason why I understand their actions to some point).
In conclusion, highly probable I will check other books from Jenny and from this series.

Now, onto what I think of the book (100% personal opinion, so others might not agree).
Overall this was a pleasant and interesting reading, to the point that I would have probably finished it in one sit if it wasn't for other personal commitments. However, I feel like the main characters kept on changing their mind and behaviour. The author pointed out on her Instagram that the characters are 18 and 19 and to not look for MCs who have everything all figured out, and I tried to keep it in mind while reading but... I don't know, I found myself keeping on reminding me of that as if to condone their actions.
I also felt like I couldn't 100% understand some of their train of thoughts. The two instances that stuck out the most to me are (SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!):
1) Roisin tells Caiman she overheard him say she was a monster and that's basically why she started hating him and chose his brother 4 years earlier.
I was like "oh, finally the misunderstanding is going to get cleared and Caiman is gonna understand why she was so hostile towards him!"... Nope. Caiman gets angry? Because she didn't go and ask him "hey, heard you say I'm disgusting, how come?"... Dude... Who would? Why are you angry instead of relieved it was all a big misunderstanding?
2) It gets revealed that Alrec decided to go with the soldiers into the attack during which he dies after fighting with Caiman. Roisin understands (as everyone else in the council room, as it's described later on) that it's not really Caiman's fault because his brother decided himself it was some kind of challenge and brought death on himself... But she gets angry Caiman lied to her about it (aka he didn't tell her about the fight) and stays cold to him for one month, until he almost gets killed... I don't know... I felt like it was an unreasonable thing to get angry about... She has been discovering Alrec fed her lies about his brother and basically abused him... And instead of seeing this new revelation as discovering yet another show of awful character from her almost husband, she focused on the detail of Caiman, who is finally showing her how sweet and caring he is, not sharing a private conversation with her. Why not asking him why he "hid" it, since it was that important to her?
Probably some other reader would understand the characters' perspective and think I'm critiquing something that makes perfect sense to them, but this is how I personally felt. I suppose it comes down to personal opinions.
Anyways, as I previously said, I DID enjoy this book, though not to the point of giving 5 stars, so it was absolutely not a waste of time. We can sum it up to the MCs not being my cup of tea, though I did appreciate how the writer tried to convey how conflicted both of them were because of what they had experienced (reason why I understand their actions to some point).
In conclusion, highly probable I will check other books from Jenny and from this series.

Personally, I am not one to grab for a YA book much, as over time my tastes have evolved. However, as with Jenny Hickman’s other NA Romantasy books, I was sucked in per usual. Jenny’s writing is always so magical, fluid, yet intense, and I continuously feel immersed. You can still feel the romantic connection, the heat, and the passion within the pages without it explicitly saying so. Fear not for those of us steamy lovers, there is a bonus chapter to quench that thirst!
Married by Fate is full of banter, flirting, innuendo, and sweet nothings. It packs a punch full of depth, longing, and passion!

Such goodness
I don't usually like the miscommunication trope. That being said, this story did it quite well. I absolutely enjoyed the vastly different points of view our two main characters held, and the slow unfolding of the truth.
Roisin was a delight, but I especially loved Caiman. He was just...wonderful. I love a good man, and that is what he was, at his core.
Also, I just really love Hickman's prose. It makes for easy reading while still being beautiful.
All in all, I was quite pleased with how this story unfolded. It was charming.

I get the feeling I am going to love the Arranged Marriages of the Fae series which is a series of short stories by an array of romance/fantasy writers! ❤️
I am a big fan of Jenny in general, her The Myths of Airren NA fantasy series is fantastic. Married by Fate was like a snapshot of how great that series is.
A enemies-to-lovers trope, with dual POV, the world building in so little pages was impressive. The miscomunication between Roisin and Caiman was frustrating at times in all the good ways! I loved Roisin's strength and her yearning to good. Caiman's pining was heartbreaking and he was so easy to fall in love with.
The side characters were good additions to the narrative, especially Lowri, who was essential I think in showing Roisin's growth into her new role. Alao didn't see the twist coming at the end.... 👏
I read the steamy edition, and can say that it was the right amount of quality spice that didn't detract from the story. 🔥
I spent an afternoon devouring this and look forward to the rest of the series!

Where to begin? So first off the book itself is beautiful and I love Indie authors who make their books beautiful with art. So at the beginning I was already irritated at the main character for being a brat quite frankly. Her friend was horrible and so was Kerrington. I’m sorry but they were. Once it’s revealed why she is mean to Caiman I was like meh..I guess I’ll allow it. Then I really started to enjoy how it was going..but that ending..all respect lost for her. It was ridiculous and upsetting and made her look like a petulant child. I can handle misunderstandings but come on!! Also the fact that she continued to feel something for Alrec after finding out his character?!? I’m completely bumfuzzled. It was too much for me

It reminded me a lot of "The Cruel Prince". I didn't really like the cruelty in it or the sexual comments. Though parts of the romance was kinda sweet.

❥This was a fun and short read. Just what I needed after Crescent City. I actually really enjoyed the dynamic between the FMC and MMC. I wish it was longer but was perfectly paced. I would definitely read more work from this author.

“Married by Fate” was not the first book I read by the author. I had already read „The Myths of Airren“ books so I knew I’d love her style of writing and world building when I applied for the ARC giveaway.
Having said that, this novella was everything I love about a good book. I finished it in one sitting as I just couldn’t put it down. Jenny’s witty jokes and endearing way of making characters come to life sucked me in right away. ✨
This is a dual POV novella in which a young fae woman goes to the human world to marry a prince in order to restore the peace between the two realms. She chose one of the two brothers after having met both of them briefly when they were younger.
Now in the human world she’s confronted with prejudice by the humans and the difficulties of choosing between the head and the heart.
It’s hard for me to put into words how happy this book made me. I just loved it from start to finish. I felt with Roisin as she found the man she thought was right for her wasn’t what she had anticipated and even more when she discovered the way love should be.
Alrec… let’s just say the ending to that was quite satisfying.
Caiman, the precious soul, gave me all the feelings. He’s the definition of the perfect book boyfriend. He’s considerate, caring and loves so fiercely that it literally brought tears to my eyes (the painting scene. you’ll see).
Overall this book was so wholesome and I fell asleep with a smile on my face after I had finished it and really, what more do I need? ♥️
This was easily one of the books that I will pester anyone and everyone to read because I loved it so much.

This story follows Roisin, a fae who is soon-to-be Queen and wife of a charming prince Alrec. She loves him, he loves her, and they lived happy ever after, am I right?
Well... no .
Bad thing happened and now she is not going to marry her charming prince but his awful brother. The fact that they hate each other doesn't help and they both know this marriage will be a failure...
But how can they be so sure about it? Are they honest with each other? And what if her prince charming was not so charming all the way?

What I loved about this book: actually ALMOST everything. I mean the plot was interesting, side characters were amazing (Broderick was my fav!!) and I've read it in like one sitting without a break.
Prince Caiman is such a great character and i really cared about him - I wish I could save him from all the bad things in this world and I was RAGING when Raisin treated him like she did. HERE WE ARE - I didn't like Raisin.
Sorry, I needed to said that. she just saw how vunerable and soft Caiman ist and what kind of hell was his life with Alric but insted of understanding what does she give him? A whole month of SILENCE. Like miss fae, I know you are young, not reasonable yet but still - Why are you like that?
That was the only one thing I didn't like.
I will give this book solid 4,75 stars :)

Married by Fate was my gateway into Jenny Hickman’s writing and I am completely hooked. This YA fantasy romance has political intrigue, betrothed to his brother, and enemies-to-lovers. What more could you want?
While there is no spice in this unputdownable stand-alone, there is a ton of tension for you to gobble up. I also want to note that Jenny does have a bonus SPICY chapter for you to read after, if that’s your cup of tea. I finished the book during a 4 hour flight and the moment we landed I raced right over to read the bonus chapter, and let me tell you.. it did NOT disappoint.
Have I mentioned that this book is under 200 pages? It’s the perfect short read for when you need a reset after a long series or when you just want to escape into a cozy fantasy world for a few hours. Overall, I highly recommend giving it a read!

As I'm a sucker for the arranged marriage trope, "Married by Fate" is a real treat. It is a thorougly enjoyable, quick read that takes the "arranged" part of the trope to a whole new level.
Jenny Hickman captures her teenaged protagonists' dramatics and brimming emotions gloriously with a dual POV and takes you on a fast-paced real rollercoaster of heartache, heartbreak, and falling in love.
Even though Roisin won't make my top 10 of female MCs, Caiman more than makes up for that. The "prince of darkness" is really just a (in parts deliberately) misunderstood soul and inferiority complexes are his best friends. While reading his POV, all you want to do is bundle him up and squeeze him real tight. Also, the boy's got manners!!

This is my third read in this series and it was my favourite so far!
If you liked the cruel prince you will love this. It gave me very Jude and Cardan vibes!
Married by fate sees two prince brothers who are at odds in their values, but when the eldest dies the younger brother has to step in as air to the throne and as betrothed to his fiance.
This is a slow burn, enemies to lovers and it is written absolutely beautifully. I demolished it in about three hours!

This was a great idea just not executed well. The Characters were all over the place. "I love him, no I don't, I lust him, no I don't" Really juvenile in there thinking and behavior. I get what the author was trying to do but I just ended up not liking anyone in this book. The story had many holes too and just needed some polishing.

I actually really enjoyed this book, even though I'm not normally fond of the YA genre this one was really good! the storyline was very captivating, and loved the enemies to lovers aspect and second chances along with all the brooding.

I really enjoyed this novella. It was short and sweet, perfect to reset my brain. This is set in the same world as Myths of Airren series. I loved learning more about this kingdom, Vellana, after finishing the Myths series.
Loved having the dual POV and seeing their different views on past events.
The pining, swoons. I loved Caiman. Enjoyed the dynamic between Caiman and Roisin. And love when they finally build their bridges to each other.

I'd never read a book by Jenny Hickman before, and I'm now a fan! Married by Fate was an awesome enemies to lovers fae romance, with similarities to Tessonja Odette's To Carve a Fae Heart.
The magic in this story is limited to the far and fits more of a low fantasy model. The character dynamics are so well-executed, and it's easy to root for the two leads who are drawn to each other despite themselves. There's even an optional spicy scene offered in a link at the end!
This a true romance, with no strong external conflict to make up the climax of the book, focusing more on the couple and their relationship as it develops. The writing in Married by Fate was great and the story carefully crafted, and I practically cheered at so many moments.

I was so sucked in by the family devastations and romance drama in this book. Everything was so well planned and wrote out, but yet so smoothly threw in such HARSH twists and turns.
Reading Roisin fall for Caiman was beautiful, and my heart swelled for him. They both deserved a HEA, and the author provided.
Do you love arranged marriages, fae, enemies to lovers, dual POV, romance, and a little family conflict? This book is my weakness because it hits all the things I look for.
Married by Fate is definitely one of the best YA fantasy books I’ve read.

Please give me a moment to collect myself, because this book made me feel every emotion all at once.
I’ve never been so furious, touched, sad, angry, happy, enchanted, and annoyed with characters before.
And I loved every word and second of it.
