Good and important book focused on why gdp growth is not a good target for the world to focus on as a key metric as it do not drive sustainable behavior and drives debt, lead to overshoot and make it more urgent to do drastic changes for future generations

In 1972 bracht de Club van Rome het rapport Grenzen aan de groei uit met voorspellingen op basis van een computersimulatie voor de economie en van het energie en materiaalgebruik voor de vijftig jaar na 1972. Nog steeds zit de wereld angstig dicht tegen de uitkomsten van de “Standard Run” aan, op basis van de beschikbaarheid van energie en grondstoffen. Uitputting van olie en bepaalde metalen heeft zich echter tot nu toe nog niet voorgedaan, maar de ‘vervuiling’ is inclusief de CO2-uitstoot wel correct voorspeld. Die uitstoot heeft op zich nog niet geleid tot een afname van de economische groei, maar dat zou via het klimaat en biodiversiteit natuurlijk alsnog wel kunnen gebeuren. Maar dat is in het rekenmodel niet meegenomen.

Diverse onderzoekers hebben het gebruikte computermodel Earth3 uitgebreid en verfijnd, het meest recent is het Earth4All model, een ‘global systems dynamics model’ dat niet alleen de economie en het grondstoffengebruik simuleert maar ook de interactie met de natuurlijke hulpbronnen. Twee scenario’s zijn doorgerekend: (1) “Too little, too late” met vooral technologische innovatie en (2) “Giant Leap” met een halvering van de emissies iedere 10 jaar, een meer vegetarisch dieet, en het adresseren van ongelijkheid en armoede.

In het eerste scenario gaat de economische groei door, maar ook het tweede scenario blijft nog binnen het ‘groene groei’ model met een verdrievoudiging van het GDP in 2100. Het eerste scenario laat zien dat de ecologische footprint blijft groeien met de bijkomende ecologische schade. Het tweede scenario (met meer postgrowth ingrediënten) blijft beter binnen de ecologische grenzen, maar of de ecologische footprint ook inderdaad zo zal verminderen dat het geheel binnen de ecologische grenzen blijft, zal nog moeten blijken.

Dit is de kern van het boek, maar daarnaast geeft het boek in veel tabellen en grafieken de ernst van de huidige toestand weer, in de stijl van dat bv. 97% van de zoogdieren nu veeteelt, huisdieren en mensen betreft, en maar een paar gewichtsprocenten in het wild rondloopt. Daarnaast bespreekt de auteur de diverse politieke opties om de klimaatcrisis meer (degrowth) of minder (green growth) serieus te nemen.

Books with a focus on economics can be intimidating and full of jargon that can serve as a barrier for those not in the club.

Not so with Peter Victor's "Escape from Overshoot". Victor tells a clear and compelling story of how we got ourselves into this predicament where we have overshot earth's ability to support us and how to get ourselves out it.

Highly recommended for all interested in the topic.
