Covert operations. Predictive dreams. Tangled jungle paths. A passionate, whirlwind romance.

Isabela is haunted by her dreams. When a series of synchronistic events merge her nighttime dreams with reality, Isabela follows her intuition to study with a master watercolor artist in Thailand. She descends the airplane airstairs in Bangkok into an overwhelming heat and a future with unforeseeable consequences.

Navy pilot Lance Jameson is flying jets off the USS Midway when he is recruited for a covert mission along the Laotian border—and a return to the far eastern land of his youth.

Mera Rodriguez lives an idyllic life on a small farm in rural El Salvador and is fascinated with the jungle and the myriad of life forms that populate it. Preparations for her quinceañera celebration are underway when government-sanctioned rebels burst into the local church and recruit, at gunpoint, the able-bodied men of her village. Mera must now forge a path of her own.

Charged within the backdrop of the pre-Vietnam war era, three lives converge in an epic, multigenerational novel that spans four decades. Lotus explores the brutality of war, the mysterious interconnection and impermanence of nature, and the freeing power of redemption.

Many thanks to NetGalley for a copy of Lotus in exchange for an honest review. I tried several times over the past year to get through this one, but I had a hard time following the plot and/or purpose of this. Maybe this turns around and starts to make sense? I’m not sure, but after making it more than half way I’m throwing in the towel because this has become a chore to get through.

"Lotus" by C. K. Durham is a captivating novella of historical mystery, thriller, and suspenseful fiction with three compelling characters. The writer provides rich descriptions that immerse you in the world of the characters, keeping you tightly gripped on the book.

The use of phrases in Spanish adds an authentic touch and connects you to the places where the action unfolds, allowing you to feel the characters' emotions. Isabela, with her love for nature and morning sketches of exotic birds, becomes a character enveloped in a vibrant landscape, inviting the reader to experience the charm of these moments.

"Lotus" is not just a gripping story but also a journey into the past, offering a profound perspective on the impact of war on people and nature, with a touch of hope in the power of redemption.

Fascinating story stretching across otherwise unrelated conflicts, including Vietnam in the 1960s, El Salvador in the 1980s and the Balkan Wars of the 1990s. It takes a while to join the dots but as the book progresses, all becomes clearer.

Beautiful story and characters

The story takes us to from South America to pre Vietnam war Asia . It reminds us how we are all interconnected. The story is beautifully written and then there’s another level of spirituality that one can relate to! I highly recommend this book!

The first few chapters interested me, but then I found it difficult to follow why the story went where it did and also ultimately the connection between the characters and conflicts. The romantic relationships themselves were interesting, and there was some ideas that gave information about what the different conflicts were like for those involved from a military and civilian perspective. Thank you to BookBuzz.net and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine.
