She's not truly a governess. He doesn't want to be a dutiful lord. They're about to collide in this deliciously steamy conclusion to the Unexpected Lords series from USA Today bestselling author Scarlett Scott.
Oliver “Knight” Knightly, newly inherited Earl of Stoneleigh, has been summoned home to England after the sudden death of his brother. However, he has no intention of allowing familial obligations to keep him from the life he made for himself as a champion bareknuckle boxer in America. He will see his wayward nieces settled with a capable governess and return to the fame, fortune, and adoring ladies awaiting him.
Proudly unconventional, Lady Corliss Collingwood plans to establish herself as an author, travel the world, and do whatever pleases her in the moment. What better way to research her novel-in-progress than by posing as a governess? Overseeing a few young ladies can hardly be too difficult a challenge. Can it?
Unfortunately for Corliss, it can. Especially when the ladies in question prove to be wild hellions, and their uncle is the most handsome, tempting, arrogant, vexing man she’s ever met. Neither Corliss nor Knight can afford to surrender to the irresistible attraction sparking between them. But that doesn’t stop them from finding their way into each other’s arms. And before long, into each other’s hearts…
Heat level: Scorching! Don't say you weren't warned.
USA TODAY bestselling author Scarlett Scott writes steamy Victorian and Regency historical romances with strong, intelligent heroines and sexy alpha heroes. She lives in Pennsylvania and Maryland with her Canadian husband, their adorable identical twins, a demanding diva dog, and one zany cat.
I liked the idea of a pugilist lord and a young author masquerading as a governess falling in love. Knight has inherited because his brother has died rather suddenly, leaving four young daughters behind. Knight must learn quite a bit about being a lord but also about being an uncle. Corliss has lied to her parents about visiting an aunt in the country. Instead, she has taken a job as a governess because she needs to research the role for her newest novel. The boxing lord and the lying governess fall in love and deal with the consequences of their decisions. This installment felt much like the last one, minus a potentially interesting mystery in the background. It has the liar trope again - a woman who lies about her identity and a man who has suffered because of the lies of a woman in his past. Again, honesty would solve so much. I did like the nieces a great deal. They were pretty cute, even if they weren’t all distinct personalities. The Goodbye Governess is a simple read that is entertaining for a weekend.
Full disclosure: governess/employer and secret identity tropes aren’t my favorite—especially secret identity—so I was fairly hesitant starting this book. I shouldn’t have worried. Scarlett Scott delivered a wonderful love story, and I was riveted from beginning to end. Knight and Corliss were great together, and I enjoyed Knight’s nieces as well. All in all, this was a great book. I received an ARC from the author. All opinions expressed are my own.
Because he was Knight, and he was the flame, and she would happily cast herself upon it just to burn herself to ash.” The Goodbye Governess is the fourth book of the Unexpected Lords series by Scarlett Scott. Knight is a second son who has spent the last decade as a champion prizefighter in America. When his brother dies unexpectedly he begrudgingly becomes the new Earl of Stoneleigh. Eventually he makes his way home to England to take over the responsibilities of his title, which includes taking care of his four little hellion nieces. Lady Corliss Collingwood is an author who decides she must step into her leading lady’s life as a governess for one month to gain some insight into her character. She ends up as Miss Brinton, governess to Knight’s nieces. She doesn’t expect the pranks the girls pull on her constantly, or to be ridiculously attracted to her new employer. Knight doesn’t do relationships because he’s been hurt in the past, but he can’t help but become enthralled by Miss Brinton. Corliss finds it harder each day to cling to her lies and remember who she really is. I was not expecting this big prizefighter to be so damn tender and sweet, but that is exactly what Knight is! The second half of this book is angsty and heartbreaking, sometimes it’s hard to remember this will end in an HEA!🥹 Brilliant writing, allllll the steam😮💨, and cameos from other characters in this amazing series! Such a good book!! Preorder today so you don’t miss out on this heartbreaker ❤️
As always Scarlett delivers a very promising sleepless night.
A governess/secret identity trope who falls in love with her employer who was a prizefighter/boxer turned into an Earl.
She wanted only to write a story, she thought her employer would be a greasy lousy old type of Earl and the wards would be sweet and obedient however the girls are just misunderstood and heartbroken and need someone to love them.
He expected to get a governess who was unattractive and old so he could return to his previous life and leave his burdens of being an Earl in the hands of employers however life has other plans.
With the common goal for young girls who only need love affection and stability in their lives,
They find not only those common grounds together they find that they can't resist each other, and they can't fight how they feel for each other. They both not only want each other physically but emotionally and forever. Love works in mysterious ways.
I'm definitely sad to see this series come to an end but this just means there's more amazing things in store from Scarlett.
I look forward to seeing what she has in store next.
I received this a gift from the author in exchange for a voluntary review and this is purely based off of my own experience and no one else's.
This one definitely raises the heat levels that’s for sure. Phew!🥵
One is and Earl with responsibilities and wards, who wants to continue being a Boxer. The other is a Writer, but for now is a Governess with very unruly students. These two are determined to stay away from each other but destined to be together, the chemistry is electric. Excellent writing from Scarlett, more please.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
Oliver “Knight” Knightly, a champion boxer in America has been summoned home to England after the sudden death of his brother, Robert so he’s now the Earl of Stoneleigh. He will see his four wayward nieces settled with a capable governess and return to the fame, fortune, and adoring ladies awaiting him in America. Proudly unconventional, Lady Corliss Collingwood plans to establish herself as an author, travel the world, and do whatever pleases her in the moment. What better way to research her novel-in-progress than by posing as a governess. Unfortunately for Corliss, the four young ladies to be wild to a fault, and their uncle is the most handsome, tempting, arrogant, vexing man she’s ever met. Another delicious, charming, steamy romance from the author. The characters are wonderful, the attraction between Knight & Corliss is electric, the four nieces are adorable, the story flows effortlessly so start this page turner early in the day if you want to sleep as once started it’s hard to put down. I was drawn in from the start & left with a smile on my face at the end but just one tiny point I hope we catch up with Knight & Corliss in a future book to find out if twins do run in the family My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Another 5⭐️ read from the talented pen of Scarlett Scott.
Lady Corliss is working undercover as a governess to the late Earl of Stoneleigh’s four daughters, as part of the research required for her latest book. After four weeks she is intending to return to her real life.
Knight, aka boxing champion “The Bruiser Knight”, has returned to take on duties of the title his late brother held, having spent the majority of his life in America. Once he has everything in order he is intending to return to his real life.
Fate may have other ideas……..
Once again Scarlett has delivered a beautifully emotional love story, with well crafted characters and such a depth of emotion that it brought tears to my eyes in places.
With hidden identities, misunderstandings and past hurts to overcome - not to mention four mischievous girls with the odd prank or two - Corliss and Knight’s story is definitely one that you will feel invested in. Enjoy!
It’s shocking how high this rating is when it was cheesy and the narration was terrible, but reading it would not have improved it that much. I like this author but didn’t enjoy this one. Plot 5(1-10) steaminess j am not going to rate. It has many episodes but it just sounded cheesy and slightly ridiculous.
The book felt so long, with so many unnecessarily lengthy monologues and repetitive content, such as: —I want to be honorable/ I don't want you to be honorable. —oh no I'm deceiving him/ how dare she deceive me.
Like, I had to skim a lot.
Also, idk what that warning is on the GR synopsis abt this book being spicy. Like yes it has around 3-4 intimate scenes. But that's pretty much it. Even those scenes were just so painfully long, and I couldn't connect to it at all coz half the time they're doing the regular old back and forth of "I want you but this is so wrong". Ig yes in a way some of those bedroom scenes can be considered steamy coz the guy is good at doing the talk and the way the author describes the incidents can also be considered hot ig. But, like everything else abt this book, this also felt bland and underwhelming.
Personally, I could see no sizzling chemistry. Yeah they constantly wanted to get into each other's pants so badly, true— but I wasn't anticipating it as I ought to, so the "chemistry" even if present wasn't "sizzling". It was all just a big whatever to me. I couldn't care enough abt Knight, Corliss or the HEA.
The only two things I enjoyed: 1) The 4 little troublemakers— Alice, Beatrice, Henrietta, Mary. Those 4 young nieces of Knight's were a handful but they were also so wholesome and amusing and delightful to read about. I absolutely enjoyed reading the parts where Corliss or Knight interacted with the girls. 2) The short-lived angst when the truth comes out.
The one quote/ Corliss x Knightly scene I found amusing— “Excellent. I know this is terribly inappropriate, but you have my word that my intentions toward you remain honorable.” Because he would force them to be. lol.
But don't even think of letting my thoughts on this book deter you, obviously. Coz a lot of others seemed to have absolutely loved and enjoyed this book. So there's a 100% chance this was a 100% me problem.
This was such a delightful romance; I was swept into a heartwarming story, full of passion, secrets, deception, four young female hellions that will steal your heart.
Lady Corliss Collingwood is an independent lady, she dreams of becoming a famous author and she has already written and published three books. In order to complete her research on her novel in progress, she is hired as a governess to four your ladies. Corliss soon finds that the governess position is much more difficult than she had imagined and add to those the young ladies' handsome uncle.
Oliver Knight aka Knight, Eart of Stoneleigh, recently inheriting the title. He has been in America and has become a champion bareknuckle boxer; a life he enjoys with the money, women and success. He has no intention of letting his new responsibilities tie him down and plans to return to America as soon as possible.
But the plans for Knight to leave and the plans for Corliss to stay a month as a governess were both put to rest when Knight's four nieces work their way into the hearts of both Knight and Corliss. As Corliss and Knight navigate their growing attraction and the challenges of their respective roles, they discover that love can come from the most unexpected places and the passion between them is explosive! The Goodbye Governess is a captivating read that will leave you breathless and longing for more. I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.
Book 4 of the Unexpected Lords series is a tale of a man of the ton (Knight, aka Stoneleigh) who never wanted to be responsible for others—not for an estate or for his brother’s children. All he desired was to uphold his fame of being a boxer in the US. That was what he believed, anyway, until he literally ran into Miss Brinton (Corliss). Corliss (who is really Lady Corliss Collingwood) maintained she would be able to act as governess to the above-mentioned four girls until she had enough inspiration to finish her novel about a governess which was about a month.
Knight has betrayal issues relating to the lies in his past relationship. Corliss is keeping secrets from Knight and the girls all have abandonment issues. So much to have to work through! I loved that Corliss was very open in talking to Knight and prodding him to break down his walls. He’s never had anyone (family or otherwise) really care about him. It was heartwarming to see the changes coming about as he got to know Corliss. Her loving personality was felt immediately. I attributed that to having grown up in a supportive family. Having someone’s love can change your life.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the steamy love scenes.
I received a free copy of the book in advance and am leaving this review voluntarily.
I loved this one. Lady Corliss wants her independence and when she published her first book, she saw what she could do to earn the means to be dependent on herself. However her newest novel is about a governess but since she is a Lady, she isn't very knowledgeable on what a governess do so she decides to apply for a job as a governess and go undercover so that she can her novel and be free. Except, her charges are menaces. They play prank after prank on their Uncle but also Corliss. Suffice to say, Corliss never could've imagine what her job would entail. I loved how once she saw through her charges, she took their sides, understood them and made things more easy for them. She cared for them like they needed.
The Earl, Knight, is a pugilist and that's what he wants to do but he inherited the earldom along with his late brother's daughters. I loved that he took Corliss word seriously related to his nieces and took steps to be more approachable to them and caring for them. One of the highlights from me was when Corliss and the girls were playing tag and Knight couldn't help but join in. I just loved how both Knight and Corliss developed their relationship but also their relationship with the girls. This was a delightful read and just what I needed.
The Goodbye Governess is book four of Scarlett Scott’s Unexpected Lords series, and it is another fantastic addition. This is the story of Corliss, sister to Ellie and Izzy, and Knight, friend to Zachary and Grey. Knight is newly arrived from America, where he became a champion boxer, while Corliss is secretly writing a book in an attempt to become financially independent and avoid marriage. Corliss ends up at Knight’s estate, where he has unexpectedly become the Earl, so that she can be a governess to his four nieces (and get some real life experience for her book). Their attraction is immediate, and they soon fall for each other, though Knight has no idea of Corliss’ real identity. Knight and Corliss slowly start to build a family before they know it. This is a great love story, and I was so excited to see some returning characters. I’m eagerly awaiting Criseyde’s story! I received this book as an ARC.
Scarlett Scott has done it again. A compelling story that takes you through every emotion under the sun. From the early stages of companionship giving you all the tingles and butterflies of first love, to the inevitable conflict, tearing out your heart with the angst and anguish. All of this combined with earth shattering passion and longing. It’s enough to make a girl swoon! Corliss and Knight fall so quickly and so hard that is painfully obvious that there will be a doozy of obstacles on their path. Add in the return of two favourite leads from earlier in this series and you’ve got an instant success. But the cherry on top of this delicious sundae of a novel, the hilarious antics of Knight’s four orphaned nieces. The story starts out with a series of ‘Parent Trap’ style pranks that are delightfully funny and then follows with the beauty of childish vulnerabilities. ‘Everyone always leaves’, being the motto that has seen them through all the losses of their young lives. Your heart will surely melt as you read this fabulous ‘found family’ story.
I have loved Scarlett Scott’s books since the first one I read, Rebel Love in 2016. This is now my 62nd books of hers I've read. She is definitely one of my top favorites. I love the way she writes, I love her stories. I love her characters and all their different personalities. She is just so good. PLUS she writes some of the best sex scenes of all the authors I read. I mean there are a handful that do write really great ones but she is definitely at the top.
I loved Knight and Corliss. I loved this story. I loved their personalities. It’s funny, I love my regency/Victorian stories that involve the “ton” but I loved that this took place nowhere near a ball or a ride in Hyde Park or shopping. I felt you really got to know their personalities a lot more without all that. Just a great read. A favorite read for May for sure.
This has been a great series. I would definitely recommend this book (and all her books).
Such a wonderful and breathtakingly beautiful and passionate romance! Lady Corliss is writing a book and needs hands on experience as a Governess. She applies for her position at the Earl of Stoneleigh’s household for his four nieces. The Earl’s true passion is his life in America as a champion boxer. As Corliss and Knight get to know each due to a mutual attraction, they find themselves giving in to their attraction. But, he just wants to go back to the states and have her take care of his nieces. Ohh! And in Chapter 5 there is a naughty and witty incident involving treacle and feathers!😄 His nieces are looking for stability and find it in Corliss and their Uncle! This is a very enjoyable read with trust issues and abandonment which is resolved ❤️ It was so much fun reading how Corliss and Knight fell in love. How they all became one big loving family and the Epilogue is priceless! I absolutely loved this book!
What a wonderful heart-wrenching story of two unconventional people who must work through the odds to find their true passions. Corliss and Knight are so well developed characters that you can literally be in their heads. The side characters of Knight's nieces add humor and mischief. I love the kids and how through their heartbreak of losing those they love nestle themselves in Knight's heart to help him find the family and purpose he never really had. Corliss is sweet and even though she comes to Knight, in a misguided "undercover" governess, finds herself in the process. Both characters grow together and must learn how to be true to themselves and to learn to grow together. I laughed, I cried, and the story was totally amazing. All emotions were involved here. A must read!
OH MY GOODNESS!! Fantastic Book, Knight is just the right kind of hero, I love his passion and "bedroom " talk🥰 the sparks between Knight and Corliss, set this book on fire 🔥 but will that passion be enough to keep him home, especially when he finds out Corliss isn't who she claims to be, will she be able to tame his way ward nieces?just grab you a copy and find out!!😍😍
I received an advanced copy of this book, for an honest review.
Wow! This story has all the feels and kept my emotions on a roller coaster ride from start to finish. It also kept me reading into the wee hours! Knight and Corliss fell deeply in love , with a sizzling passion for one another! When you love a person that deeply, you also give them the power to hurt you just as deeply. They both succumbed to that power over them and it was a hard road back to regaining the trust and vulnerability that they once enjoyed. Beautifully written and totally heart wrenching!
This book is spicy and incredibly sweet. Although it had 4 young kids in it, the romance stayed front and center. If you are looking for a relaxing romantic read with all the spice (Scott can bring it!) Then this is the book you're looking for!
No 🐱 was spanked in this and honestly, the fact that we were given that in Ms. Scott's last book (just before this one) "Her Ruthless Duke" (excellent book by the way, released a few months ago) but not here too? Shameful. I am unsure what to rate it now.
3.5 shaky stars that I finally decided to bump up to 4, mostly because Scarlett Scott's a pro. She's a solid writer and knows how to write a steamy scene. That said, I liked this, but didn't love it. It's sweet, pretty well-paced, there's plenty of emotion between the MC's, there's a touch of humor and a nice ode to Edgar Allan Poe besides. The MMC, Knight, is a pugilist (a trope I'm into) who isn't just great in bed (of course) but he's honestly a good guy under his tough exterior.
On the downside, compared to other HR's I've enjoyed with MMC's who are pugilists (books by Alice Coldbreath, Emily Windsor, and even Charlie Lane come immediately to mind) this one doesn't stack up. My biggest gripe is, there's SO much that's hard to buy in the first half that I nearly gave up. I also didn't like how things wrapped up for the HEA.
Here's the setup: Corliss is a young unmarried lady of the ton who is a successful writer who publishes under a penname; one of those HR tropes that's unrealistic, but one I like anyway, so I gave it a pass. She adopts the last name of her latest heroine and lands herself a governess job, composing an over-the-top letter of reference from someone she apparently doesn't know and the MMC, Knight, doesn't either (hmmm). She has no experience at all with kids, but somehow she's magically able to get Knight's bratty nieces in line, and just fakes how a governess looks/acts, all so she can research a fictional book she's writing about a governess. Meanwhile, she encourages a physical relationship with Knight, behaving more aggressively than any virgin of that time period would. She makes sure to remind him that the girls have lost both of their parents plus a string of governesses have abandoned them--although she plans to just work there for a month and then leave. (Knight very rightly is bothered by this when the truth comes out).
Knight is a second son who traveled to America to become a top prize fighter (again, this stretches credulity, but I love HR's that feature MMC's who are athletes, so I don't care). He ends up having to take over his late brother's title, and his young nieces are a handful, but suddenly when Corliss steps in they're fine. No more pranks or conflicts. He was betrayed by a female reporter in America who took advantage of his trusting nature but for some reason never thinks to look into Corlis's identity...you can see where this is going.
These early chapters made me cranky, and that tends to make me nitpicky. I was bothered by Knight's exercise routine (yes, of all things). Why does he run only two miles a day--which would take a man in top shape 15 minutes or less--when pugilism was/is considered very much an endurance sport and some top fighters of the time would run/walk 40-50KM a day? (Come to think of it, why does Knight measure the distance in miles instead of km's? He's been living in America, but he's still a Brit.)
The book did get better as it went along, or maybe I just got less cranky? Apologies were made, feelings expressed. I was on Knight's side for most of the proceedings, but did feel like he should have disclosed his past much sooner and at least given a timeline for how long he expected to be in America. Again, I wasn't entirely satisfied by the HEA, so that almost made me give this 3 stars. I felt that the author took the easy route and tied up everything too neatly.
Bottom line: The feels are there but everything else is kind of sketchy.
Starring Lady Corliss Collingwood (aka Ms Brinton) and Oliver “Knight” Knightly, Earl of Stoneleigh (aka The Bruiser Knight)
Tropes: In Disguise, Hidden Identity, Forced Proximity, From Spare to Heir, Hero with Wards, Governess-ish, In His Employ
My, oh my, oh my!! I melted every time Corliss and Knight were on the page!! Scarlett Scott broke the knob on the heat volume… coz this was such a delicious scorcher!! *excuse me while I open a few windows… and the freezer.*
Omfg!! This story was packed with so much feels!! I couldn’t stop smiling and ugly crying af, y’all!! Every page turned brought on a whole level of emotions. Knight and Corliss… and nieces have stolen my heart and I don’t want them to give it back!! This is going down as one of my all time fave Scarlett Scott books.
Knight is such a man!! The image of him that formed in my mind… hot dang!! I just wanted climb him… ahem!! For someone so tough, he felt things with so much passion. That’s why even though I knew they were going to get a HEA, I was so worried that he had a vice grip on his anger for Corliss and her deception. I know he felt her betrayal sucker punch him stronger than any he received in the ring. I just wanted to hug him!! But the angst of it all was so delicious!!
Corliss was adorable and she was so hilarious with how she handled Knight and his nieces. Truly brought sunshine into their life. I hated the fact that she lied to them and didn’t look at the whole picture when she started her research… but if she hadn’t answered that governess ad then they wheels of fate wouldn’t have started rolling. Everything worked out the way it should be.
I truly loved everything about this story. The banter between Corliss and Knight was pure magic… brilliant dialogue. Thank you Scarlett Scot for sharing your amazing gift with us. Another round of applause.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily review it and the comments are 100% my own.
My Star Rating: 5 stars Ugly cried AF. Major book hangover. Characters and storyline were freaken amazeballs. Made me wanna hug the author for writing a book that gave me all the feels!! Will definitely be reading this story over and over and over again!!
The Goodbye Governess is the 4th book in Scarlett Scott’s Unexpected Lords series. It can be read as a stand alone but the leads from ‘The Playboy Peer’ do play a part in the story. Oliver Knightly was happy with his life as a champion boxer in America. The death of his brother means that he had to cut that life short and as the new Earl of Stoneleigh, Knight is landed with the responsibilities of the earldom and the care of his four young nieces. Itching to return to his old life, Knight decides to employ a governess to whom he can give the responsibility of his nieces before leaving again for America. Lady Corliss Collingwood has secret plans to establish herself as a bestselling author and then travel the world. Needing to carry out research for her latest novel she hits upon the idea of posing as a governess for a month. Telling her family she is visiting relatives for a few weeks she is sure she can complete her research and return home without anyone being any the wiser. But when Corliss finds that her charges are hellions who simply need some stability in their life and their uncle is handsome, tempting and entirely someone she can fall in love with, will her deception ruin everything? This is a sweetly heartwarming story focusing on the romance between Knight and Corliss and the importance of family. Corliss was not expecting to fall in love so deeply with her employer and wrestles with her guilt in deceiving him. Her bond with her charges is also developed wonderfully. Knight is a prizefighter but is such a sweet, honourable man who is wary of developing relationships because of a big betrayal in his past. He has major trust issues and when he discovers Corliss’s deception you can understand how conflicted he is, but he eventually realises that love can conquer all. I really enjoyed this book. Scarlett has created a wonderful story with lots of charm, humour, romance and bucketloads of passion! It was great to see Anglesey and Izzy again and the girls are a delight. I received an advanced review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I would definitely recommend this book and the entire series!
OMG what an amazing book!! I loved it! Oliver “Knight” Knightly, newly inherited Earl of Stoneleigh, has been summoned home to England after the sudden death of his brother. However, he has no intention of allowing familial obligations to keep him from the life he made for himself as a champion boxer in America. He will see his wayward nieces settled with a capable governess and return to America. Proudly unconventional, Lady Corliss Collingwood plans to establish herself as an author, travel the world, and do whatever pleases her in the moment. What better way to research her novel-in-progress than by posing as a governess? Overseeing a few young ladies can hardly be too difficult a challenge. Unfortunately for Corliss, the ladies in question prove to be wild hellions, and their uncle is the most handsome, tempting, arrogant, vexing man she’s ever met. Neither Corliss nor Knight can afford to surrender to the irresistible attraction sparking between them. But that doesn’t stop them from finding their way into each other’s arms. And before long, into each other’s hearts… I enjoyed everything about this story. Knight is now one of my favorite male characters. He is super-hot, honorable and devoted to Corliss and his nieces. The girls are truly diabolic with their pranks and their adorable innocence. I loved the way Corliss falls in love not only with Knight but also with her nieces. It’s impossible not to read this book in a day. It’s absolutely engaging and addictive, full of sweet moments but also steamy and funny ones. There’s a bit of aghast too. I loved it deeply and I highly recommend it. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Book 4 continues Scarlett Scott's 5 STARS enticing & emotional storyline in her wonderful Series: Unexpected Lords. Great characters & a provided BLURB. Well written read about an Earl's daughter who has snuck away from home to finish her research into being a Governess for her 3rd novel under her writer's name.
The new Earl of Stoneleigh, of a year is finally returning to the Estate in his new capacity. He had been in America traveling around & being a professional boxer & he left as world champion definely filled full of dread & hating the responsibilities he newly acquired as the new Earl. Knight, preferring to keep his name he has been known as to both his friends & including the boxer world of sports. He was known as the Boxer Knight & it was what he cared for.
Knight knowing he was planning on returning to America as soon as he got Estate matters in order, which unfortunately included his 4 new wards, his brother's children that were his nerves from age range of 5 thru 11. However, he had not planned on his reactions & blatant physical need for the rambunctious girls new governess.
Knight & Corliss eschewing caution & control can't seem to keep their hands & kisses off each other. I enjoyed their delicious read that I could not put down. It is a fast paced romance drama that flows with emotional turmoil from them & the 4 girls. Each one of these 6 people are suffering loneliness in their own way.
The Goodbye Governess by Scarlett Scott is a captivating read. Corliss and Knight captured my imagination and my heart from the first few pages. Knight’s nieces were the cherry on top. It takes a talented author to write four children with distinct personalities and also make them believable and engaging.
I would say that this is one of the more angsty books I’ve read from Scarlett, but it never turned me off from the story as it does sometimes. She managed to get me to read one of my least favorite tropes (hidden identity) and enjoy it. I did feel quite sorry for Knight while Corliss was deceiving him. I have to admit I cheered when the revelation of her identity was taken out of her hands.
Both Corliss and Knight were champion grudge holders in my opinion, but oh my, their makeup scenes were incredibly passionate and well-written! I’d rank them as my favorite couple of the series. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the Collingwood sisters in future series.
Fair warning: this is not a sweet romance. Scarlett definitely brought the steam and the spice!
I received an ARC from the author. The opinions expressed above are my own.
The stars are definitely for the little hellions um children! Lady Corliss Collingwood Aka Corliss Brinton is now a governess! Research for her next book must be done in person. Corliss is no more qualified than a hen in a pig sty but here goes laughter, buckets of water and of course frogs. There are 4 sister orphans who lost their father and their uncle Knight Stoneleigh the new Earl has come from America to see about them for a few weeks and also train for his next fight! Oliver aka Knight is also known as Bruiser Knight the campion has known many lovely women but Corliss calls to him and is also off limits as governess to his nieces! These two are smoking hot and their chemistry is off the charts! Lively banter along with lively young ladies is the order of the day! There stations are far apart and Knight has a championship to defend! But Corliss is not who he thinks she is! When a most unlikely relative shows up well Knight is hurt and angry even more determined to go to America for his final fight! Corliss is also ready to fight for the man who now holds her heart! Who will win? Bravo
Having read all of Scarlett’s HR’s, I’ve come to expect certain things. The characters are always intriguing and well thought out. There is always a lot of steam. There are period accurate details. And, generally, there is some element of danger. In The Goodbye Governess, that last element was not part of the story. I kept waiting for something bad to happen, for some seemingly insurmountable obstacle to arise for Knight and Corliss and, I’m happy to say that it didn’t. The drama in this story lies in the relationship between the two main characters (and to a lesser extent, the supporting characters). As much as I like romance and steam, I also truly enjoy a story that makes me emotional. If my husband has to ask me what’s wrong, it’s a good book! The Goodbye Governess delivered in that respect. The road is not smooth for Knight and Corliss but the getting there is what makes the story shine. I hope that Scarlett carries on with these characters in future novels (which is very typical of her writing). It’s always fun to see what’s happened since we last “saw” them.
