If you are looking to get into amigurumi or just want to start learning how to crochet, then this book will be a good starting point for you. As someone who knows how to crochet and crochets a lot, there were even a few techniques that I learned and ways to improve my own projects. It was also helpful to show side by side comparisons between US and UK terms because any crocheter will run into both at some point.
The only thing I didn’t like with the book is that the actual patterns seemed repetitive. The amigurumi often had a similar shape, which is good for learning, but not for anyone looking for unique patterns. Once you know how to do one pattern, the next is basically the same but the additional details (horn, wings, ears, etc) are different.
This might just be a me thing but I also wish the author talked about the differences between yarns more and used more of a variety. Majority of the yarn used in the book is worsted weight, which to me is the absolute worst. Acrylic yarn is easier to use, especially for people learning how to crochet. On top of that, amigurumi that I’ve seen and are popular are often made with a fluffy thick yarn which is very different from worsted weight. The fluffy heavy weighted yarn tends to be a single strand where as acrylic and worsted are multiple small strands woven together. Fluffy heavy yarn is often more prone to breaking if tugged on compared to worsted or acrylic. Obviously, yarn preference is just something that each crocheter has to learn but it would have been helpful, I believe, to have this info and maybe more listed as well.

I am a sucker for crochet books, and Crochet Magical Creatures is a fun book to add to the collection.
The opening section of the book details the tools and notions needed to begin crocheting. I need to add a disclaimer here that the author does specify some brands that work best for them, however these brands are not necessarily global brands and may be harder to find elsewhere.
The patterns themselves written in US notation, and there is a guide to each of the stitches in the front of the book. Those who are used to UK terminology may find this useful.
There is lots of good detail about scale, finishing off, symmetry in placing elements, and making the aesthetics of the piece match your vision for it - all up an excellent introduction for a craft book.
The patterns themselves may look daunting to a new crocheter, but they are clearly written for the most part and reasonably easy to follow, and the designs are lovely. Many of the body shapes are repeated across different patterns, so the crafter will soon get used to working off these and putting their own spin on them. It would have been nice for some in-progress illustrations, so that the reader is able to understand exactly how to assemble the pieces - an experienced crafter will know hoe to do this, but beginning ones may not.
All in all, this was a lovely book of adorable amigurumi creatures to create.

From start to finish, there’s an excellent amount of information that’s great for those either new to crocheting or new to amigurumi without being overwhelming. The opening has instructions for every technique one will need along with some techniques that aren’t a must, but just make life easier. One of those techniques is the magic ring. I’ve been crocheting for well over a decade and when I learned about the magic ring, I am not even exaggerating when I say it was life changing. It makes every project that’s worked in the round start up like a dream.
In addition to being a great instruction manual, there’s also 20 adorable and easy patterns that’s perfect for anyone getting started out. The instructions are easy to read, easy to follow, and have all the information provided to make the projects go as smoothly as possible. I think that this is a great book for people new to the craft and just folks who are looking for more amigurumi patterns.

You’ll find my crocheting skills about fifteen steps and many tears below beginner level. I can do a slip knot and my chain stitch actually looks like a chain stitch now. I think I did two rows of single crochet stitches one time.
Because my imagination is much more advanced than my ability to actually make yarn do what I want it to, I saw the cover of this book and decided that I was going to crochet a dragon.
I’m now just the teensiest bit obsessed with amigurumi.
Part 2 provides instructions that will allow you to create twenty magical creatures. My current favourites are:
🐉 Davina the dragon
🐷 Basil the flying pig
🐙 Konrad the kraken
🦄 Moira the pegacorn.

Having (re)discovered my liking of crochet very recently I’m not considering myself an experienced crocheter. Also, Amigurumi was completely new to me. Loving all things having to do with Fantasy, this book captured my attention.
The author keeps up the fantasy theme in the theory as well as in the creatures and I found that a fun addition.
Speaking of the theory section, being the type of person who dives into a pattern without first reading through all the “dry” stuff (even if there are magical things to be discovered there), I was a bit mystified at first as to the amount of yarn I would need for the first pattern I tried. Turned out however that this info was dutifully incorporated in the first part, shame on me.
The stitches are well explained, the drawings adding an extra visual aid. Basically, all the info in the theory section makes sense and gives you all the info you need to start this fun adventure of creating some whimsical friends to accompany you on magical adventures.
As to the patterns themselves, they are easy to follow, well explained and the results are magical indeed.

I'm absolutely thrilled to have had the opportunity to review this fantastic book! Drew's patterns are nothing short of remarkable, and the book covers many beginner-friendly topics in detail. From introducing the different types of yarn and tools required to start crocheting to explaining the basics of reading a crochet pattern, this book has it all. The clear and concise explanations make it easy for even the most novice crocheter to get started on their journey. Furthermore, the patterns included in the book are simply breathtaking. Drew's attention to detail and creativity are evident in each piece, and it's evident that he put his heart and soul into this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning new patterns and techniques, whether you're a seasoned crocheter or just starting out. It's a must-read for anyone who wants to take their crochet skills to the next level!

There are so many cute magical creatures to make from this book including a kitsune, a flying pig, mermaid, and of course the classic dragon. I decided to go with the magical mushroom and I think it turned out really cute! I learned some new techniques. There was even a Little explanation on how to sew limbs on which I found helpful. I still struggled a bit but it went better than my previous attempts.
I can’t wait to try more of the amigurumi patterns. If you like crocheting or want to pick up a new hobby besides reading, this book might be fun for you.

A great little book with some great ideas. I really liked the simplistic way the first stitches were laid out with the black and white illustrations showing exactly which thread to put where. I also liked the fact that you could swap different body parts out from the different creatures so you could have an endless array of monsters to make.
I think it would have been better to have the projects listed in order of ability as some of the early monsters looked harder to crochet than some of the later ones. but altogether a really fun book.

This is my review of Crochet Magical Creatures by Drew Hill. Thanks to the publisher for providing me with a copy via NetGalley.
I learned to crochet years ago through tutorials on the internet. It was mostly a side-side hobby that didn’t get practice for long periods of times, and then I’ll get my muse back until it faded, and so on the cycled repeated. When the recent pandemic, I picked up my crochet again with new inspiration: Amigurumi. I improved time folds compared to my preview skills set.
But at the time of the beginning of my journey, I would have loved an extensive and encompassing guide suitable for beginners, to help me be a bit less intimidated. I admit, visual help, such as video recordings of techniques, are in my opinion, crucial to pick up this skill quickly. This could be a replacement for some, with enough reading comprehension and perseverance. But for me, this guide could be a wonderful companion alongside video recordings.
In particular, the introduction is great for a beginner, getting you started with tools and materials, and especially, the Crochet Hook Sizes chart. I’m a nerd when it comes to technical information, and I appreciate this very much, even as an advanced crocheter.
More helpful information in the guide is about reading a pattern, and crochet terms specific to Amigurumi, and how their name differs in the US compared to the UK. This guide provides the US terminology, which I am personally more familiar with. The glossary is a good summary. More is explained about what a is round, how to read repeat instructions, decorations, changing yarn color, placement, stuffing, fastening up, sizing and more.
The graphic depictions of techniques, especially basic ones- are done very well. I really wish I’d had this a few years back. It certainly would have saved me time and frustration. Who’d have known how advanced I could have been right now?
Such terms with helpful graphics are: ‘magic ring’ (a term very suitable to the theme of this guidebook), simple chain, single/half double/double crochet stitch, back and front loop only stiches, picot (which I don’t personally like to use, because of my tight tension), increase, invisible decrease, and whipstitch. And how can we forget the infamous (in a good way) Popcorn Stitch, so famous in Amigurumi patterns? Its graphic tutorial is even better than most video tutorials I’ve watched to learn this stitch.
And after, we get to the magical patterns section. The patterns are very appealing to my personal taste and current trends. The fact that there aren’t as many of them could be seen as too little for some, but to me this seems very achievable, and realistic for a novice crocheter.
The formatting of the patterns is good, easy and understandable, keeping to the unofficial standard (that I notice only when trying to figure out a poorly written pattern). The hyperlinks referring back to previous covered stitches, that are detailed in the beginning of every patter, is absolutely genius.
The theme of Magic leaning into Fantasy is cute, especially since crochet is a sort of craft magic. My personal favorite patters in this guidebook are: Cosmo the Caticorn, Leonard the Dandy-Lion, Toshiko the Kitsune, Gus the Enchanted Mushroom, Nessie the Loch Ness Monster and Joaquin the Phoenix. But all patterns are adorable. I’m sure to give them a try soon!
A suggestion for improvement is to provide patter measurements also in cm, not only in inches.
My tip for beginners: your creations might take a while to get done, and they won’t necessarily look exactly like the promised picture. But don’t give up! It takes practice and perseverance, the journey is a part of the fun, alongside the final product. Good luck!

Table of contents starts out where you see a circular picture of the animal along with a name and page it's located on.
They look adorable. Introduction discusses about the magic of crocheting these creatures.
Book has two parts, part 1 is instructions how to crochet and stitches that will be used, techniques, etc.
Part two are the patterns. Love that in part one the author gives you the basic instructions and how you can then make them into any animal you want by changing parts of the bodies.
Differences between hooks, yarns are discussed. Other equipment is detailed and why you may need them.
There are pictures showing a lot of the choices. Charts are also available of different sizes of hooks, US/UK differences of stitches.
There are so many variations of supplies that allow you to tailor the animal yourself.
Each stitch is written and also shown with sketches that are clear to understand.
General terms and lingo in patterns are discussed and some pattern instructions.
Tips and tricks are also included.
Each pattern starts with a full page color photo and title of animal and summary of the pattern. Flying pigs is my favorite because we have seen pigs fly.
Gives size of animal and yarn and hook sizes, and other notiotns.
Stitches are listed.
Each section instructions are given with row or round by round.
All tips are also included so you can put eyes in before the head is sewn because then you can't get to that section again.

Much like reading, crocheting has always been a passion of mine. Even though I don't regularly crochet amigurumi, I have made a few things with this technique, and I'm constantly on the lookout for any books that discuss crochet so I can get my hands on them. One such book that I enjoyed reading is Crochet Magical Creatures by Drew Hill.
The book, in my opinion, was unique from the crochet books I've read. Two sections comprise the book: We learn everything we need to know in the first section, which is essential before we begin. The different features, such as the placement of the face, hair, eyes, nose, limbs, and legs, as well as the fundamental stitch that will be used, the materials needed for crocheting, and so forth.
The second section of this book includes 20 magical creatures and step-by-step directions for creating them.
Also to my liking, the book's opening section introduces us to each creature. The book includes appealing and well-lit photos.
My favourite creatures in the book are:
- Gala and Iris the cloud sprites
- Gus the Enchanted Mushroom
- Pippin the Jackalope
I shall definitely make them for my future projects.

This little book contains instructions for crocheting some very cute and magical creatures of your own. The creatures range from dragons to cyclops, and even include the Loch Ness monster and several other mythological creatures. While most of these creatures are small, there’s also instructions to make the kraken much larger than the original pattern.
I really liked how the author wrote this – rather than just being simple instructions and explanations, fun metaphors and similes were woven through in a neat and entertaining manner. For example, in one instance where the author talked about accidentally splitting your yarn, they said it could lead to “non-magical curses” on your creature. Similarly, there’s a little paragraph before each creature with some folklore, rumors, or magical history surrounding them which was a lovely touch. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and many of the creatures would be easy enough for beginners.
This awesome craft book is making me break my promise to not buy more yarn (oops!). I highly recommend this to anyone who loves crocheting and magical creatures! I help teach people to crochet at the sit n stitch at our local library. We see all sorts of skills there, and I’m a fan of amigurimi -how fast it is and easy once you know the stitches. I requested this book because of that.
I would highly recommend it- something I could really appreciate is that he took the time to explain the difference between the UK terms and the US terms. This is really helpful as you go through different crochet books to know what you are looking at and the height difference.
Something else I loved about this book was the colored illustrations that showed exactly how to make each stitch (with the loop highlighted) with clear instructions on how to make each stitch. I’m looking forward to this book being available in the library for new crocheters.
I made the Gnome to be able to test out how easy it is to follow the pattern and the end result. He’s super cute if I do say so myself! Pattern was every bit easy to follow like I was hoping, I think I’m going to tuck him into the Christmas tree for a decoration this year. On my to make list is also the jackalope and the Ogre and maybe Lockness

While it does include common creatures such as dragons and mermaids, it also includes quite a few unique creatures that I haven't seen patterns for before, such as the kitsune, hippocampus and jackalope. The range of difficulty in the available projects is great, and the patterns are clearly set out and written. I particularly like the detailed descriptions for assembling each project. I found that the instructions for this book were well done for the most part. I appreciated the introduction walking us through the various techniques and tools needed for knitting, as well as the conversion charts and some of the explanations. I also found the instructions for each of the patterns to be pretty straight forward. Now, this comes as someone who has. yet to take up a crochet needle and actually do something, not counting when I used to crochet endless chains as a kid watching after school cartoons at my grandmother's.
There were a number of magical creatures that I found truly cute, but there were also some that creeped me out a bit. All in all though, I liked most of the characters and patterns. I also appreciated the little stories to lead into each one and to give each creature a personality.
I will definitely pick this book up to try when I finally break that barrier and do something with the knitting kits I bought to start me out.

I love this crochet book! It's beginner friendly and can help beginners learn how to crochet. The first section contains explanations for reading pattern terminology, how to do the stitches you need for the patterns in the book, and how to assemble the creatures (including sew limbs on, fastening off, adding hair). The patterns are detailed, and I appreciate the addition of telling the reader the actual length of yarn to leave when closing the item, for example "leaving a short tail of 6 to 8 inches" rather than "leaving a short tail". The descriptions of each character in the book are really fun - Drew gives each character their own personality.
At the time of this review, I have completed 2 patterns in this book and am in the middle of 2 patterns in this book. I received a copy of this book on NetGalley, but I love it so much I'm buying my own copy so I can make all the creatures. I love the adorable creatures featured in this book. Crochet Magical Creatures does a good job making their book as user-friendly as possible. The author does a good job covering the basics: tools needed for the projects, yarn size, reading a pattern, and abbreviations (for stitches) used in a pattern. This book is great for beginners. The step-by-step, picture tutorials make it easier to follow. I think these magical creatures are geared towards teaching tweens & teenagers how to crochet, which I'm all for. Well this was an absolute pleasure to read! Although crafty books can sometimes be hard to actually read as there are various technical components that need to be read only if you are following the instructions while making them, this book can absolutely be read as a how to crochet guide, introduction to amigurumi and an instruction manual for these gorgeous creatures. I love the humourous way that the author has written each segment and can absolutely relate to his ogre fingers! This book is perfect for beginners as it includes a funny way of choosing materials, describing what is best and really detailed pictures of stitches. I thank Drew Hill, his publishers and Netgalley for this temporary copy in exchange for an honest review and will have to seek this book out again as I won't have time to finish too many glorious creatures before having to relinquish it.

I have a pretty basic understanding of crochet, and I’ve mostly made flat, square things. This was my first foray into amigurumi, and I like how beginner-friendly the patterns in the book are! I started with the dragon pattern and love how my wonky first attempt turned out! These are not quick patterns (lots of sewing pieces onto other pieces), but they are pretty straightforward and my finished dragon had a lot of mistakes but still looked adorable! For my next project, I used chunky yarn and used the dragon pattern in the book as a guide for my own creation. I checked this copy out from the library, but I’m going to purchase my own copy because I find myself returning to it again and again, even as I’m making my own patterns now.

Crochet Magical Creatures is a great book that includes 20 new and simple patterns to get started in crocheting. There are very clear instructions that make it easy to follow along and pictures that show you what the steps and patterns are supposed to look like. As someone who is very new to crocheting, I thought this was a good starting point to learn! Magical creatures theme keeps the patterns fun and a good varied is given to choose from however for someone who is not new to crocheting maybe a bit repetitive. This aspect would be great for someone learning this as new hobby. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in starting crocheting!

What an adorable collection of magical Amigurumi creatures!
This book is set up for beginners and beyond with helpful pictures and instructions detailing the how to’s of each stitch. There are also helpful tips on the placement of limbs and facial features that are key to the success of your creature.
To a new crocheter wanting to dive into toy making I feel like this book might be a good start. The body shapes are all similar so once you got the hang of it those 20 creatures would work up fairly quickly and with a name like “Joaquin the Phoenix” I don’t think it will long before I start one of my own.

I totally loved this book about amigurumi the creatures are not all too complicated, and it would make a great start in learning this skill. The book is divided into two parts. Part one explains what you need to start making these projects and part two are the patterns. There are full color pictures throughout the book. The creatures are so cute and the instructions are well laid out. You should already have a working knowledge of the basics of crochet before you start. But you do not have to be an expert. There is a glossary in the back of the book to help you as well. The hard part trying to figure which one I want to make first.

I always love crafting as long as I can remember. But crochet is my most favorite. The problem is I don't have much time or patience to make big "classic" crochet project such as wearable clothes or doilies. My journey make me found amigurumi in one of blog with Japanesse language and I never never stop making them for almost 10 years until now. Amigurumi (crocheted or knitted stuffed toy) is the Japanese art of knitting crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures.
Crochet Magical Creatures will help beginner doll maker to jump in to this adorable art with so much easier than my personal learning experiences. Author provided all explanations about basic tools, materials and some basic crochet stitches complete with drawing illustrations. He provides sources to make continually learning progress and joining amigurumi community.
