He wanted greatness. He wanted to be a photographer and a famous musician and a philanthropist and a millionaire ... There was no way he could wake up every day to the same life, the same old routine, because he knew that if he did that, there would come a day where he would fall into a pit and maybe he wouldn't ever crawl out of it."

Tom Carter is twenty and has absolutely no life direction. He makes bad decisions. After a dalliance with his roommate, he is forced to move back home. He thinks his life has hit rock bottom, that is until his brother Danny is injured in a car accident. When Danny comes home from hospital, he's not the same. He's suffering from a delusional disorder and thinks he's dead-a walking, talking corpse no less. Tom wants to help Danny, but he has no idea what to do. His mother Georgia is no help either. Unsurprisingly, they're both out of their depth.

When Danny's behaviour becomes more and more bizarre, Tom wrestles for control, but it only pushes Danny further away. If Tom is ever going to truly help Danny, he must learn to love Danny for who he is now, not who he was. Sometimes, love looks like letting go.

Set in Melbourne, Australia, Somewhere In Between is a quirky, coming of age story about family, love and everything in between.

Somewhere In Between - Nic Bryan

4/5 ✨

Somewhere In Between follows the family of Georgia and her two boys Tom and Danny as they find their way through life with a parent that walks out on them, illnesses, accidents and severe mental health issues.

Tom, as an older brother, wants only the best for Danny and pushes him to be everything he can be in life. Tom comes out as an overbearing older brother. Danny suffers from excruciating migraines that leave him bedridden for most of his teenage life. But he is soft and beautiful and you are forced to want only the best for Danny.

Meanwhile, Georgia is grappling with raising her two teenage boys alone, while Danny struggles with his health, Tom struggles to make something of himself and has no ambition or drive in his life, other than being a mouthy-know-it-all.

While this story follows Tom trying to help Danny, Tom realises that maybe he isn’t okay and needs help too.

This story is chaotically beautiful and hooking. It will leave you not wanting to put it down to the very end just to see how the characters survive. Mixed between Tom’s story of looking after Danny, there are multiple little character stories throughout the book, which may sound hard to read but Nic has done a brilliant job at interweaving them all together to make complete sense and an easy-to-read book.

I’m not a huge fan of YA, but this one had me gripped to the end and was easy to read. I would recommend anyone to go out and buy it asap!

*Thank you to the author, Nic Bryan, for my ARC copy in August. I was just patiently waiting for it to be put on Goodreads to rate!*

As someone who has struuuugggled with mental health my whole life, I always seek to find books that perfectly capture what it's like. However, I also become a little bit scared that I'm going to see myself too much and get upset. It's really a tough want. 🤣

The book truly captures what it's like to have severe depression. And surprisingly, I didn't get put in a bad headspace while reading. There was a lot of sarcasm used between the brothers and it seemed to really be a glimpse into family struggling to understand their own. So much of this book spoke to me and I'm so happy I had a chance to read it!!

I think this was a good book but I was not really hooked on it maybe because I am not used to reading these kind of stories.
What i liked about this one is the way the author illustrated the characters' thoughts. The way she described certain scenes, or even the deepest parts of their mind was impressive. This book gives a view of what it's like living with someone who was going through some difficult times especially on their mental state. How the family navigated through this problem was unorthodox for the most part but that's what made them more human.
I found it a bit boring on some parts, one of the reasons it took me long to finish it. Also, their story as a family was so unusual that it didn't escape from my from little frowns of confusion.
All in all I enjoyed it and would recommend it to those seeking for a book about family, mental health and navigating relationships.
