Unlike many authors of post apocalyptic books, Jack knew when to end this series. Not keep going on and on about the same stuff, different day. There's really no ending in this book. Just like reality. You'll either survive or you won't.
I read a lot so I get persnickety about grammar, punctuation, etc. When the flow of the narrative is choppy it really takes a lot a way. I have read some of Hunt's other work and I don't remember being dissatisfied with the editing. Several lines contained things that are just not true or are too far fetched. I write that off to poetic license. The story line itself is very good, although not ever knowing what triggered everything is annoying as heck. The ending is too soft; it's a cliffhanger that is never resolved. The body count in the books is high, but there is no sex or curse words. I kinda like that. :) I hope the author one day decides to pick up where he left off. With the right editing, could be superb.
First of all, you should know that I'm hate reading this. I just realized that they actually are including three different types of disasters in this apocalypse thriller I'm assuming to kind of capture as many scenarios to bring in as many readers as possible. The EMP thing is not factually Capable. Nonstate actors, spoiler alert, are not capable of building such a device and you cannot cloud seed to hurricane nor create an earthquake with any known mechanism. I'm surprised there weren't Jewish space lasers involved. That's the only thing that's missing. This time I read some of the reviews on Goodreads to see what the fans of this Author and series are saying. It's pretty clear that anything that's a five star rating was either written by some kind of AI bought or possibly the author or someone in the publishing industry to make it appear that this is some sort of character developed intricate and well thought out plot Epic. It's none of those things. I can't remember reading a book where there's actually spelling and grammar errors. Folks, you can't say it's well written if some of the sentences don't follow the sentences before or after. On top of that the character development is a collection of cliché And cartoon characters. I think it's pretty funny that the book mentions red Dawn as clearly one of the subplots of the book includes the terminator, some kind of 007 James Bond Russian spy epic, what can only be described as dirty Harry in the apocalypse and a general mix of a good old-fashioned American Malaysian nonsense in that the Sturgis biker rally is made up of good people, as described in the book. Also the 3% is and other militia groups are somehow patriots and defending the work day good people of America while proclaiming that they are honest even while they're stealing stuff from a hardware store. Spoiler alert. Also they bring in The American Indian character complete with mentions of Pine Ridge and wounded knee. Absolutely shameless. And if you're wondering, yes of course I'm gonna keep reading the series even though it's obvious to guess what plot turn shows in every tough guy cliché is thoroughly run through until the author hits The 5 1/2 hour mark in the audiobook. On a sidenote, I appreciate the actor who reads the book as he does a pretty good job, although I suspect he is also an AI voice as the typical mispronunciations of certain words like wind and wound Are regularly wrong.
Possibly the best post-EMP survival thriller series out there
When Hope Is Lost continues the story is John, Laura, Charlie, Tommy and a whole host of secondary characters still reeling from the combination of storms, earthquakes, biker gangs, and the Russian Mafia in addition to the EMP. A new, militarized group is taking control of small communities nation wide (assuming what they say is the truth...) and is set up in a town a few miles from the rest of the characters. Again, the writing is head and shoulders above other writers in the genre! 5/5 stars, highly recommended reading for thriller readers!
Despite the title there was still hope for me as the I read the story! Such a good story and characters, there’s a good connection with them to the reader and having new side characters introduced each book was refreshing. Their journey is crazy but it makes you think about how one would handle themselves if stuck in those situations. I’ve been enjoying Jack Hunts books and I’m excited to keep reading more of them!
Great writing and believable characters. A couple of times I questioned feasibility of the story but for the most part it could reality. I sincerely hope if a apocalypse happens that I don’t have this much drama in my life but it made it interesting and the only negative I can really point out is, that it seems to end without a real positive conclusion or answers to world problems, but then again those would take decades to really end.
This seems to be the last book. The science behind the disaster is never really explained. I could not see the point of the chapter with Elena Cassidy from FEMA. Her military escort was originally Sergeant Major, but later is just referred to as major. They have no other role in the story after the time taken to set up their arrival. The wrap up of whodunit was both stretched out and rushed. I’m still trying to figure out how that could occur and then it ends with a bit of a whimper.
This book in the series has been my favorite so far. Read it cover to cover in less than a day! Definitely had some plot twists I wasn’t expecting, particularly about Danny’s sister. While I still think Frank is a grade A jerk, I can understand his motives. What wouldn’t any one of us do to protect the ones we love. Now with Vlad is out of the way, Danny’s sister’s murder solved all that’s left is the militia and finding out who is behind the EMP and mysterious “weather control.”

This book revealed some interesting possibilities in the event of an actual Electro-Magnetic Pulse. It is very clear that what we would experience, would be a change to our everyday lifestyle. There were times in the chapters that so many characters were introduced that is confusing at times. I enjoyed the book and will continue reading the series ! Chris C.
Its an edge of your seat thriller. Twists and turns that you could not imagine. When you think you have it figured out or parts of it. The whole situation is turned up side down. It is a page turner. Can't wait to continue the next complex adrenaline packed ride in the next book.
Characters all belong in this series...why they are introduced makes sense. There are some parts that are sad but we leave them with hope. Some mystery as well but it adds to the plot very well. I enjoyed this series. Jack Hunt is a good writer who holds your interest.
Book is well written. Characters are likable and well-defined. Extreme catastrophe Of a hurricane sends a mother after her son To find him. Once together they try to find her brother To escape The east coast and all the destruction. The problem is the brother is being chased by a heartless Russian he's money to.
While Tommy, Laura, Charlie and their four legged friend are trying to get to their dad's home the Russians are hot on their tails. The United Patriots have started to take over different counties and now Fema has landed in the mix. I don't know which is worse. This series of books really keeps you engrossed.
Every bit of this story rings true. I love how the different lines all merge at the end. And I love the knowledge given without excessive details over helpful items, and battles won without excessive violent descriptions. I just finished the 3rd book , having read the first two over the weekend. I want a Yeti Ground Zero, book 4, and to visit family in Lead.
This actually pulled together into a pretty interesting conclusion. A bit of blend between small town murder mystery and collapse novel. I can appreciate the added plot line to spice up the EMP narrative. Hunt managed to tie all the characters together and include a number of surprises, as well as not relying on the main character to do everything.
I love Jack Hunt's books. I like post apocalyptic fiction, but only with a decent plot and good characters. This series has that. The characters are developing and despite the many obstacles, the author gives the reader hope that there is good in the world and the protagonists are not perfect people. The story line keeps me wanting more.
Enjoyed the family saga of survival. Absolutely great twist to Frank and his family, left me guessing all the way. There is plenty of room for more input with Native Americans. You left it open for a book 4. Good luck with number 4
A different slant on the genre. An interesting mix of different groups, from Russian gangsters to Militias. The family pressures were believable and added to the inability of anyone to discover who did what.
Lots of twists and turns in this, the third book in the series. A couple of plot points really caught me by surprise. Can't wait until the next chapter in this story.
I simply devoured this series. Holy cow! This was so well written and it has so many twists and turns, I couldn’t stop reading til the end. I stayed up late reading it and stole bits and pieces of it at work. I was actually disappointed when it ended!
Lots of action. Persistent use of “fella” is annoying. If you’re going to use military ranks, learn about them first. A Sergeant Major and a Major are entirely different. Look it up.
I’m happy with the storyline. Occasionally gets a little hard to read, a little too descriptive and occasionally repetitive. Overall, I’m lookout forward to the next instalment and will recommend for peeps.
A riveting plot well written, keeping the pages turning in suspense with a surprise turning point, as the truth is finally revealed, and the pieces of the puzzle finally falls into place, Strong characters. An excellent and entertaining read.
Minus the EMP there is so much of today' s ugly world in these pages. A wake up call to consider! Easy reading like the two preceding books and just enough detail without being wearisome.
Well developed characters. Keeps your interest. Once you get into it and get to know all the characters, it is hard to put down. I’ve enjoyed all the books in this series. Highly recommend, whether you like Apocalypse books or just a good thriller.
The series of books are really quite good. This was the best book so far. I really like the way he tells a story that excites you one minute and blows your mind the next. It is like a rollercoaster and that's alright with me.
This was a great story, made even greater by the well-developed characters. There were several places where there was quite a bit of suspense; I could hardly put the book down. I highly recommend this series! Jack Hunt is a great writer!
This could happen so easy now in the world we live in now, a proud fool threatening to use nukes an another leader with nukes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and he's threaten In losing his power.
The way this book bounces back and forth it is very hard to keep up with. The characters are quite vivid, but the story line confuses me. I probably won't read the sequel.
20 words or more not really required, good twists and turns . the story flows good. Interesting characters, and situations, at times the situations seem rushed. Enjoyable story though.
