“Is there a struggle more universal than the one surrounding our views of our own bodies? Satan knows this is an easy target, and frankly, it’s one that is not discussed very often in the Church. That’s why I am so glad Rachael Gilbert wrote this book. I love how she mixes real-life experience with a biblical worldview and the expertise of a therapist. I believe there is such a need for this book right now in the Church, and there’s no better person to write it than Rachael.”

I’ve never been so happy to finish a book or so close to DNFing. But I felt like I needed to read this from top to bottom so I could provide an accurate review.

CHRISTIANS BE CAREFUL taking “temple truths” from humans. The only place we should be getting temple truths from is the BIBLE. There is no better Bible teacher than the Holy Spirit. If you read this book I implore you to pray for wisdom and discernment.

While I did find a few glimmers of useful tidbits and I think overall, the author means well and is mostly on track and aligned with the Bible… there are some things she presented as “temple truths” that were VERY CLEARLY her own interpretations.

For this review I won’t even get into the editing errors or lack of consistency, I will just stick to the content…

The author presents the section Temple Truths as a place where “..we’ll examine what God’s Word has to say about a topic discussed in each chapter” she says “I back my opinions with scriptural truths and offer this as a guide for a biblical body image movement”

Page 65- in the section Temple Truths: “the Bible doesn’t say what Eve believed about herself after the fall, but I imagine she gave herself a mental beating.. she must have felt alone, afraid, and unworthy”

This is not biblical fact and is HIGHLY speculative.

Page 117- the author says “let me be clear: your body is not a project” … then why is the ENTIRE book themed after her home building project??

Page 118- “if someone is addicted to sugar, instructing her to stop eating will only work for so long”

The current scientific research doesn’t support sugar addiction as a “thing.” Perpetuating this false statement is so irresponsible for people who struggle with disordered eating. I’ve never been on the streets trying to score a hit of sugar nor have I ever been found in my pantry late at night hiding while eating spoonfuls of sugar… this whole “sugar addiction” is a buzz word and low hanging fruit. DO BETTER.

Page 158- in the section Temple Truths: “it is ironic to consider Eve came from a rib and now we live in a culture that glorifies being able to see a woman’s ribs. I spy the enemy twisting something else God intended for good”

She then goes on to describe women being formed from a rib as a symbolic representation of our primary function as protectors????? Like what??????? Where does the Bible say that???? It doesn’t! This is not a “temple truth” but a personal interpretation!!

Page 194- now im getting nitpicky… again in the temple truths section.. while she’s talking about how we were made in God’s image and how we were knit together in our mothers womb she shares a self deprecating story about her failing at cross stitching but fails to full show how any of that had to do with anything other than just wanting to talk about herself some more.

This is how she connected it:
“That’s when it hit me. Numbers 23:19 says “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” When God knit us together in our mother’s womb, he did not have the perspective our world has regarding what we should look like. His thoughts and ways are so much higher than ours…”

What does that have to do with you failing at cross stitch?

Overall, I can’t wait to throw this in the garbage and would never ever recommend this book to anyone I know. Sorry, not sorry.

Image Restored does exactly what the title says!!! Each chapter helps one look at how they are thinking about their bodies and why. It is filled with stories from Rachael's life, advice, Scriptures, coloring pages to meditate on the Scriptures, and plenty of space to process one's thoughts. I really enjoyed this book!! It helped me understand why I was thinking about body image, the way I was. It also showed me that I can think differently about my body, and not be controlled by fads, culture, or experiences. We can be free to agree WITH God and what He says in His Word about who we are. This book is a great starting tool. One that is meant to lead us to God's Word so we can give this issue of body image to Him, so He can restore us! This book was an eye opener!!

This is one where I wish I could give an actual 3.5 stars instead of rounding. There were parts of this that I found helpful, and I really liked the inclusion of a coloring page with each chapter to provide some time to process and pray. There were also things that bothered me. Most of those were small moments that would be difficult to articulate in a review, but one thing I do want to say is that this really could have benefited from some discussion of chronic illnesses and disabilities. Even the everyday sorts of sicknesses and aches and pains everyone deals with only get some vague mentions. That feels like a huge oversight to me. And it made the times where she gave specific advice about taking care of your body (which, to be fair, were rare) ring false because there wasn't room for nuance. She said you should eat fruits and vegetables at the beginning of a meal for the fiber, and I thought about how the day before, my mom told me about an acquaintance who can't eat fruits and vegetables due to a swallowing disorder. I know that's an extreme example, but it really illustrated the overarching problem.

This isn't a bad book, and I wouldn't tell someone not to read it if they were interested. But it will probably be most helpful if the body image problems you're struggling with are mostly appearance-based, not functionality-based.

Image Restored is a resource that I will return to multiple times in the future. The book is filled with treasures from God’s word, wisdom from its passionate author and counselor, Rachael Gilbert, and hope for a body image that reflects, what it is, a body created in God’s image.
One of my favorite quotes from the book is a great message that reflects a key point: “The enemy would like us to become so obsessed with looking down at our bodies that we forget to look up at Jesus.”
The author includes many opportunities for self-reflection and growth. Each chapter includes a section called Temple Truth with Bible teachings related to the chapter, followed by a couple of pages with prayers and questions to contemplate and complete. In addition, helpful verses at the end of each chapter are valuable reminders related to the subject matter of the section. The big bonuses are the coloring pages at the end of each chapter, all including a Bible verse and video links. Finally, each unit ends with a “Counselor’s Cornerstone” that goes deeper and offers room for digging into God’s word and varying charts to fill in to assist along the road to body image restoration.
What’s so special about Gilbert’s book is that there is something for everyone. One can do it all in great detail or complete what works and return to it later, perhaps after seeing some growth in a particular area.

I have struggled with my body image for my entire life and can’t remember a time when I didn’t loathe and reject some part of my body.

I was too short. My nose was too flat. My thighs were too big. And then came the stretch marks and the “mommy pouch” after having 3 kids in 3 years in my early 20s…not to mention losing 20 lbs in my early 30s due to trauma…and then regaining all of it - and then some! - due to surgery and hormonal changes in my early 40s.

I have tried every diet and exercise regimen over the last 25 years; some have worked to help me lose weight for a period of time, but none have become a sustainable part of my lifestyle, nor have they repaired the damage done by the battering of cultural lies and cruel messages spoken by my family of origin about what is “beautiful”.

“Image RESTored: Tear Down Shame and Insecurity to Experience a Body Image Renovation” has created a safe and gentle space for me to begin recognizing the “sinking sand lies” upon which I have built my body image foundation, and then given me the tools and guidance to replace those lies with rock solid truth from God’s Word.

As I’ve worked through each section at a pace that was manageable for me, I have experienced the love and kindness of God working through Rachael Gilbert to help me feel seen, safe, and hopeful about the body image FREEDOM in store for me on this journey!

I highly recommend this book as a “must have” for any woman who has ever struggled to see herself as altogether beautiful and chosen by God.

I was not expecting that a book about body image was going to really have anything new for me to ponder. I have dealt with weight up and downs all my life - sometimes being quite thin (hurray!), and other times quite heavy (ugh). But Rachael has a chapter in this book that I was not expecting: Chapter 6 "Hidden Hurt in the Closet." The basic premise is that a strong correlation exists between trauma, shame, and body image. Small traumas that affect body image - being mocked by classmates for being chubby; having a parent who always obsesses on my weight and the weight of my siblings even to this day; being told by someone I dearly love that I will never be able to change for good - and large traumas - such as being sexually molested by a relative when I was a young child: these have affected me. I have buried emotions deeply tucked away and just refused to deal with them. This chapter helped me to realize that I have deeply rooted feelings of shame that affect how I feel about myself. I realized that I needed the help of a Christian counselor to deal with the big trauma, and I need to embrace the truth of Scripture as I work through the smaller traumas and what God says about my body. So, the book isn't about weight at all. It is about who I am in Christ, and I need to reflect on that truth a lot!

This workbook is amazing! The chapters are perfect size and manageable to take in the content. The coloring pages are such a great addition- so I can process the message that God is giving me throughout the book while I slow down and rest/pause to color. The book includes 6 HELPFUL videos that are only about 7-8 minutes each, where the author explains each unit and leads us through an activity. Image Restored has such a powerful message that is much needed for our hearts today. There is HOPE found in these pages that we CAN restore our body image! The author Rachael has relatable stories that make it FUN to read through. There are various short journal prompts and prayers, along with a few Bible verses at the end of each chapter. Purchase to find out what "butterfly hugs are :-)! Anyone looking to learn about God's TRUTHS about what HE says about our body image and how HE created us, needs to add this to their toolbox of resources. In Image Restored, Rachael Gilbert takes a difficult topic and makes it feel safe and possible to conquer and overcome it. This book, the activities and worksheets, and the video lessons included are an excellent resource you'll want to hang onto for years to come. I've already shared multiple copies with friends and colleagues. Rachael delivers biblical wisdom and insight in small, easy to digest pieces. Her kind tone and encouraging attitude make sure you know you're not alone in this fight.

I especially love all of the intentional space and time Rachael provides for us to process and pray through each part of the journey with her therapeutic worksheets and exercises. What a blessing to be encouraged to slow down and take these struggles to God. The body image timeline exercise and the family genogram were both powerhouse activities for helping me understand and overcome by own body image issues.

Did I mention the six video lessons that are included in the book? It makes it so easy to use this book in a small group or with friends. It's incredibly well done.

This book was such an encouraging and biblically rich read. Every chapter is grounded in Scripture, and I really appreciated how Rachael weaves God’s truth into each topic with so much clarity and gentleness. The reflection questions at the end of the chapters were some of my favorite parts. I still have a few to go back and finish, but the ones I’ve done already were so good and really made me slow down and process things with the Lord.

This is such a helpful resource for women, especially if body image has been a personal struggle, something you’ve seen generationally, or something you’re wanting to be intentional about for your daughters (or future daughters). I also loved that the author is a therapist herself, as you can tell she understands the emotional and spiritual layers of this topic, and she offers so many practical tools.

There are also videos that go along with the book, which I’m still working through, but they add so much. This is definitely one of my top nonfiction books of the year. Highly recommend!

The book Image Restored by Rachael Gilbert has truly helped me in my personal body image journey. It has helped me find the root cause of some of my deepest fears, worries, and anxieties and has given me great tools to work through them! It has a full therapeutic approach from her own relatable personal experiences to Biblical truths, meditative questions, beautiful coloring pages, and interactive videos and worksheets. Image Restored has so much richness and yet is so perfectly laid out that as each chapter built upon the next, I was able to easily follow along and continue to grow from what I was learning. It will definitely be a book that I go back to many times and will glean something new each time! I want to personally thank Rachael Gilbert for using her God given gift to write this wonderful book. It has been a blessing to go through and I can’t wait to see more lives changed from it!

Image Restored is a wonderful help with body image struggles. It is evident that Rachael wants to see women have victory in this area of their lives. Her writing is transparent as she shares her hurts and struggles related to her body image. But, she doesn't just leave us agreeing with her that this can be a painful part of life. She gives us many tools such as videos, color pages, and therapeutic activities to help us navigate the often life-long struggles with body image. I found the "Body Image Blueprint" at the end of each chapter to be very helpful. The Body Image Blueprint gives you a chance to work through body image struggles and I made many realizations of lies I didn't even know I believed. I was able to work through them and at least begin the journey of having a healthier view of my body. If you want a tool to help you overcome body image issues, especially from a Godly, Biblical perspective, this is what you have been looking for!

From the moment I heard about this book, I was so excited to read it! I'm about halfway through it and it has more than lived up to the hype so far. Having been through some therapy, I can see so much strategy in how it is designed and compiled. I'm sure if I was trained as a therapist, I would notice even more. From the length of the chapters to the order and topics she pursues, it's beautifully designed to walk with you on a path to healing.

While this book is aesthetically designed for women, I have no doubt it would be just as powerful for men. I applaud the author for taking on such a difficult subject in such a beautiful, genius way. I also can see so much more application to the things she teaches throughout the book. Many of the skills and approaches are just as useful dealing with any other subject that has become a source of pain. I really cannot say enough good about this book so far, I truly believe you will love it just as much as I do!

This book is so well done! From the theme of building that runs throughout, to the processing and coloring pages, to the strong foundation verses and the therapist thoughts, as well as the video teachings through QR code links, it is all so incredibly helpful and healing. I don't really struggle with body image issues, but much of what is in the book has helped open my eyes to other areas of struggle in my life and it has been greatly healing for me. Thank you for this labor of love you've given us!

Some of my favorite quotes...
"Jesus can lift the shame off your shoulders, and that's the real weight we need to lose."

"When we are busy looking over, comparing ourselves to others, we fail to see who God created us to be."

"While we can't lose God's love or salvation, we can walk away from freedom."

I think I have been waiting all my life to be free of my struggle with body image. This book has so many treasures of truth to help anybody on their journey of healing. I know that no matter how many times I read it, God will use it to uproot weeds of lies and plant beautiful, empowering truths. I am so grateful that the author, Rachael, had the courage to write this book, to share her struggles and the truths that God revealed to her. I hope everyone who has any hurt inside themselves in regards to body image, will find this book and be blessed as I have been and will continue to be as I dwell on God's Word given throughout the book.
As a side note, I really enjoyed the adult coloring and therapy toolbox activities. I never knew coloring could be so meditative and the toolbox activities help you dig deep.

This is a book I wish I had read when I was a teenager! Oh the pain I could have avoided! This is a message that needs to be proclaimed, a message that is so much greater than our perceived physical appearance. We go through so much of life putting on “bandages” here and there covering up rather than going deeper and getting to the source of our problems. This book hits the mail on the head by going deep, getting to the core of the issue…our heart and how God is the only solution. Viewing ourselves through His Lena’s changes everything. I loved everything about this book, the relatable chapters, the temple truths, thoughts from Rachel as a therapist, the prayers and journal prompts, coloring pages and strong foundation verses. Read this book! Grab a friend and work through it together! Start a book club, or work through it at your church! It’s worth it!

So many of us struggle with our body image. The one thing that helps is knowing there are others who are going through the same struggle. Rachael Gilbert invites you into her life and shows you the struggles she herself has gone through and how she leaned on God to help her through.
I love the stop and reflect sections, especially the coloring pages. Instead of just reading through chapter after chapter and never thinking how to apply the information to your life, the reflection pages as well as the videos help you stop and think.
Rachael Gilbert teaches you how to give yourself grace, let go of the perfectionism that we created in our own heads, how to grow a new foundation for a new way of thinking, and teaches us through God's Word, he loves us just as we are.

The strategies used in Rachael Gilbert's "Image Restored" have been such a blessing to this very visual learner! I have shelves and shelves of self-help and faith-based books, each several hundred pages long, that have mostly gone unfinished. Image Restored is a book of 6 units, broken down into ten-page chapters. On these pages, you will find short relatable stories, highlighted scripture and basic concepts, bulleted lists, thought-provoking journal spaces, scripture-based coloring pages, tables, charts, and infographics to complete with your own thoughts. The book is an interactive and reflective journey. My body image is surely improved and I feel more equipped and empowered than ever to deal with the times I slip back into an unhealthy body image.

Image Restored has taught me to look at my body in a whole new light. That light is God’s light. This book is so unique because it’s based on deep biblical truths that Rachael makes so practical. It includes her own journey of body struggles and comparison that are so relatable. As she brought out biblical truths, she helped me restore the temple God originally intended. Teaching videos, prayer, therapeutic coloring activities, discussion questions to pause and pray, Bible verses and biblical truths and therapy activities are all included. This book has brought me closer to God and has given me a healthier, biblical and restored image of who God has created me to be.

This book is amazing! In a God-honoring and Christ-centered adventure, Rachael takes you through reconstructing your body image. This is not your average made-in-God's-image book. While that is truth and referred to, it is not the core message. Through a series of concepts, discussions, and personal activities beyond the normal Q&A found in Christian books, Rachael's thoughtful design and purposeful intention walks you through deconstructing how you view more than just your physical body, but your entire person. She gives you the tools to rebuild it based on the Word of God blending therapy with practices and scripture to help you uncover the faults in your perspective.

If you or anyone you know, have ever struggled with body image or self worth, read and gift this book! Rachael has written a gem! The tools she has created to help process the lies from our pasts, that shape the things we tell ourselves today, are incredibly valuable! Gods view of us, and who He created us to be, is the key to healing, and Rachael’s tools put God front and center in the healing process. Rachael is clearly passionate about restoring body image in women and helping everyone live healthy and whole again. A book I will return to time and again for my own personal work and to help other women in my life.

A much needed book for todays Christian woman. I’m so glad the author followed Gods leading in writing this manual to gain freedom from body image issues. I love the authors approach by first getting into the Word and revealing why this hot topic is such a battleground and why it is so important. My favorite part of the book is that it’s not just a book we read for information but it’s really a manual that walks us the reader step by step with interactive exercises and questions so that we can take ownership of the learning process. Additionally it’s so important and critical that all of it is based on our God created image. A must read.

This is a life-giving book. Rachael shares personal stories that then lead you through your own journey. It is set up in very doable chunks and like a workbook format. I love the discussion questions and how this could easily be read with a group of women too. It is clearly a Spirit-led guide. I also appreciate that there are teaching videos to go with each section to dive deeper. Great read that can be simple or a deep dive depending on the capacity you have in any given season. It's definitely a journal/resource that can be re-visited regularly.

I love the way this resource is designed using Scripture, art, and a Counselor’s Cornerstone at the end of each unit.

I found it helpful that the author included tools we use in the counseling office like a genogram for you to do where you trace body image issues and disordered eating in your family tree. I’ve already had some clients find this very helpful. Most of all I love that she comes at this sensitive topic not only as someone who works with others who struggle, but is also transparent and real about her own struggles in these areas.

Rachel has a way with words. Her relationship with Christ shines abundantly as she helps readers with personal struggle. She is so precise in hitting the nail on the head. We all struggle. Social media has placed so much undue pressure for us to keep up with the masses. We are to look one way and wear certain things. Over time our body images are no longer our own or what intended by Christ. Image Restored helps breaks down those barriers and learn to see ourselves according to Christ. We are beautiful in his eyes!

Here are my favorite things about this body image Bible study:
- It’s truly about body image, not dieting or exercising or losing weight
- It’s truly a Bible study, not just a pep talk or positive affirmations
- It takes an “inside-out approach”, focusing on healing our hearts and renewing our minds, not just changing behavior
