Wolfkin & Berserkers #4

Sheriff's Bad Bear

Rate this book
He’s done waiting, so his mate is about to discover that his bed is just right…

A werebear is just a cute name for what Brandon Ranger really is — a berserker. Beneath his skin lies a warrior driven by pure, brutal emotion. A warrior who never quits, no matter how much pain he’s in.

Which was fine when he was at war.

But at home, nothing’s so easy. Especially not when prickly sheriff’s deputy Samantha Green just wants to be friends. Because a berserker’s emotions never sit quiet—and when Brandon’s need comes roaring to the surface, there’s only one way to save Run.

So he did.

A year later, he’s back and his berserker’s under control. Except it’s too late. Because if Brandon wanted to win her heart…running is the worst thing he could have done.

Good thing a berserker never quits.

Kati Wilde is a tight-lipped, loose-hipped woman of indeterminate age and low breeding. Born into a very large family, she now has a very small family (no laws were broken in this transition), and she writes romantic fiction to assuage her darker urge to write Transformers erotica. She lives in Oregon, so most of you are safely far enough away, and has two old cats.

Kati writes the Hellfire Riders MC romance series and will be publishing her first New Adult novel, Going Nowhere Fast, with Berkley later this year.

About Our Series:

The Motorcycle Clubs series is for romance readers who want all the heat and emotion, but who don’t have all of the time. At this time, we are only publishing novellas — our intention is to provide readers with short (yet satisfying) MC romances. Sometimes we might continue one couple’s story over several novellas, but each individual novella will have a satisfying romantic resolution. Because they are short, we focus the stories on the eroticism and romance, and will be building the MC worlds as each series progresses.

1st read: February 2023
2nd read: November 2024

First things first, I'm so glad that Kati Wilde is writing again. I love her Dead Lands series, and The King's Horrible Bride is one of my favorite contemporary romance novellas.

Now back to this book. :) I read the previous book in this series (Teacher's Pet Wolf) two years ago and I liked it. This book focuses on Sam and Brandon (the sister of the heroine and the brother of the hero from Teacher's Pet Wolf). At the end of Teacher's Pet Wolf, Brandon left unexpectedly. This book shows a bit of Sam and Brandon's relationship before he left, and what happens when he returns.

This book is smutty (and strange and kind of gory), but still cute. I like both main characters and I'm glad they got their HEA. The story was kind of rushed, but it was a fun read.

I can't wait to read what Katie Wilde releases next (apparently it's a book in the Dead Lands series. Yay!)

Edit: It seems like this has been updated with multiple extra chapters in the last day? A new version just got pushed and I don't recognize anything in the last chapter, so I'm going to do a quick reread.

Edit 2: This got an additional 30 or so pages and so many things were fleshed out better. I'm not sure if an old draft was originally released or something, but if you read this on release day (Jan 31) do yourself a favor and go back and reread it!

I liked it because I like everything Kati Wilde writes, she's an instant-buy/preorder author for me.

I just wanted more.

This was 4.5 immediate gut punch guilt ridden stars and I just needed more.

The MMC screws up. The FMC calls him out on it. There's pain, and angsty feelings, and that guilt ridden gut punch to the stomach. But it resolved too quickly. I know it's only a 76 page novella, but I wanted more. This could have been a 760 page series and I would have devoured it. Kati creates these amazing characters with depth and growth despite such a short amount of pages to do it in, but the action felt a little rushed in this. I wanted more time with Sam and Brandon. I wanted him to wallow in her pain a bit more, I wanted her to take more time to come around to him moving back into the farm house. I just want more.

2 - 2.5 stars...

I've been waiting for this story for quite some time and I was expecting it to be more than...what?...90 pages I think...of surface level plot and smut because I know Kati can write something longer/deeper while also being deliciously smutty. Basically, the hero screws up majorly with his fated mate and the heroine is mad about it for 2.5 seconds. The end.

I was craving way more character development and relationship development. This could have been a brilliant friends-to-enemies-to-lovers romance with an epic groveling but it completely missed the mark for me. I needed the story to be like this quote...

“I don’t care how difficult you are. You’re worth every effort—and I would prove it to you tonight and every night and day to come. I will love the fuck out of you, if you let me.

so dang sweet

I’m a sucker for Kati Wilde and the chemistry she’s a master at crafting. Honestly this book was sweet as honey. It was just the cutest, heartwarming-est story I’ve read in a while.

I want more, I want longer, I want it all.

I’ve been waiting over 2 years for this novella 😵‍💫 I really enjoyed the 3rd novella in this series and was looking forward to the story of the side character’s in that one, but release dates kept getting pushed back and somehow it’s been over two years for this 100+ page novella lol so although it was cute it wasn’t as good as the previous novella. I wasn’t too sure about this after reading the prologue which brought us to 25% of the story 😵‍💫 but it got better after that although everything felt rushed. There was true conflict, but then it was immediately smoothed over without any real work so what was the point. That said I did enjoy Ranger, especially, as a character: werebear/beserker? Somehow a very cute combo and it was nice getting to check back in with book 3’s characters and see their baby 🥺🤍

I’m normally a massive Wilde fan but there were a few things that didn’t work for me:

- his reason for leaving and staying gone
- identity crisis- he’s a man, a bear and a berserker. I feel like it was too much
- not enough grovel

Overall the pace and style were great as always

What a let down ... I feel like it was writing in 5min and crammed a story with big potential in 5min.
Sam is more mad than ever but pouf, next day everything is all right. Ok it's supposed to be a novella but it really deserved a few more chapters ...

DNF at 57%. This dude promises to wait for her and doesn’t even wait a minute until she’s responded. He leaves for a year, comes back, and expects all is well. She tells him never again. And then proceeds to immediately forgive him.

I want more groveling when my heroes mess up royally. And I don’t understand a storyline like this. Who promises to be there, asks if there can be something between them, and then leaves before even waiting for an answer?

There was already some stupidness with her feeling like she’s too difficult a person to be loved.

This book made me cry. And not in a good way.

”Fuck,” he breathes, then rests his brow against mine. “We’ve both got to work on this feeing unworthy shit.”

Smile watery, I nod in agreement.

“So we will.” He kisses the corner of my mouth. “Tell me where you want me to start.”

That’s an easy answer. “Just love the fuck out of me.”

“Already do. And always will.”

I love this book so much.
I love Brandon and Samantha so much.
I love Kati Wilde’s books so much.

Second-chance romance perfection. And it even made me cry. 10/10 recommend.

dry, desiccated

It took nearly 4 years for that? It reads like an explicit Smurf fanfic where the author used the word “berserk” instead of “Smurf”. It’s not even novel-length. It’s a long short story or a novella. There’s no character development at all. No plot. No real conflict. Fully 1/4 of the book is graphic sex, sex fantasies, and silly sex jokes. Brandon left and came back. He and Sam are back together, picking up exactly where they left off within a day. One of Sam’s now-former colleagues harasses women and is in a biker gang. He gets arrested off-page. The end.

Hoo-boy. Our berserker bear got himself into a bit of a pickle when he went all bear and ended up abandoning his human mate (not that she knew about the mate part) for a while in a valiant attempt to control himself. I was all ready to give Brandon some serious sour lemon face over the abandonment part, but...his reasons for leaving and why he stayed away so long made sense and instead I found myself feeling bad for both Brandon and Samantha.

I mean, dang. Losing yourself in your beast for him and feeling very abandoned in a vulnerable moment by her was ROUGH. But once they got settled back into the swing of things and they started talking about the hows and whys their relationship took a turn for the better.

Let's just say that the berserker side of our boy needed a little TLC as much as the bear did. Or maybe Brandon just had to fully accept that his warrior-self didn't scare his tough human like it scares some.

A feisty deputy (who's definitely not too much for her bear to handle), a normally easy-going bear riding the edge of his control, a missed opportunity, a dangerous situation, and one berserker no one wants to cross (except maybe Samantha). *thumbs up*

Well, I definitely recommend reading the previous books in the series before reading this one. I was pretty lost with some of the references, but if I had been more determined, I probably could've pushed through and still enjoyed the story. The main problem for me is that the existing feelings the two MCs have for each other were supposedly there but they weren't believable. Based on the synopsis, I was expecting some pining or just deeper emotions in general, but from the little I read in the first chapter, the FMC seems pretty bland as a character and in her feelings towards the MMC. Maybe that aspect improves as the book goes on, but I just wasn't feeling it.

Uggggghhhh I wanted more dammit!

After reading Alicia and Rangers book I was dying for this one- I loved Sam and Brandon, once I read he left I knew their book was going to be full of grovel! Hey, guess what? It wasn’t.

Brandon leaves for a fucking year without warning after Sam finally caves and wants to be more than friends. He’s finally back in town and he’s going to make it up to her- how you ask? I dunno because he really doesn’t. Sam is mad at him for approximately 20 mins and then they start to bang. Meh I wanted him on his knees begging for forgiveness (I mean, he did go in his knees but it wasn’t for that 😉) When Sam asks wtf he’s been doing all year Brandon is just like “lolz soz I was on bear time, I didnt realize I was gone so long oops” and Sam is just like “omg I hate you you goofball but let’s do it”.

It just seemed like half a story, there’s a whole scene where Brandon’s mom is telling him about how if he doesn’t find his mate he dies and Brandon never brings up being a mate to Sam ever, even though he said he would. It would have been interesting to see the dynamics of a bear/human fated mate thing but that was completely glossed over. Are their kids bears? Brandon was so excited to hang with baby Emma - we get none of that, their own kids are in the epilogue I dont know if they even had names.

At some point in the epilogue Sam got shot and Alicia turned her? I think?

Everything was so short and rushed it became kinda mish mosh. 😞 I still love Kati and her storytelling, I just wish the telling was more in this one.

The couple: Brandon and Samantha

Romance trope: shifter; fated mates
Series: Wolfkin and Berserkers
Length: 114 pages

Plot: Sam's sister is mated to Brandon's brother, so of course they spend time with each other. More than that, though, they're friends, and Sam doesn't want to lose his friendship. Brandon knows that Samantha is his mate, but he's taking it slow, until one night when he can't control himself any longer. He takes off to give himself a moment to cool down. But bear time might just be a little different than human time.

Commentary: I know he had a reason for taking off and being gone so long, but she forgave him awfully fast. I don't think I could have. Grudge is my middle name. She was right to act that way, I think, but she was way more gracious than anyone gave her credit for.

Previous book in the series: Teacher's Pet Wolf

Samantha, the female human lead, and Brandon, the male bearshifter/berserker lead, were secondary characters with chemistry in the companion story, Teacher’s Pet Wolf. I’ve been waiting for this story for literal years! And it was just as great as I wanted it to be, though longer wouldn’t have been a bad thing. This novella is dual POV, well written, and a steamy intense paranormal romance with two characters who feel deeply and are scared of not being enough. I enjoyed Samantha’s resilience and emotional strength. I enjoyed Brandon’s depth of emotion and willingness to adjust for Sam and other’s needs. I enjoyed the mutual character development and the intense relationship development. I definitely enjoyed the intimate scenes. I also enjoyed the secondary character interactions and the value of relationships outside the primary romance for both characters.

easy sweet and yummy read

How could I have not known they had their own book!!!! I devoured it in less then an hour because when you love characters you just commit and you’ll love Brendon and Sam. Meant to be mates but one night ruins it all where Sam promises to herself she’ll never let Brendon in again.

A year passes and Brendon return and who doesn’t love a bear shifter fighting and claiming his mate. It’s intense, smexy and over the top but I couldn’t help but drink it all in. I love the push and pull and the banter between these two. The connection their scenes together are hot as fire.

Highly recommend if you’re looking for an instant attraction shifter mate romance.

This felt really rushed and like it had a lot more potential but none of it resulted in anything. I didn’t feel the villain plot added anything nor did the separation since it was almost instantly resolved? The time skips and off page resolutions were disappointing, I would have loved a more fleshed out version of this or keep it to a short smutty story without big plot gaps.

I loved Sam and Brandon’s banter and couple energy - but again would have enjoyed more of their tension than just the prologue.

I always look forward to reading Kati Wilde, but this was very meh. The beginning was a bit long and angsty right off the bat, so it feel like a drag to read. I pushed through and I wasn't surprised that I liked the characters and was rooting for them. It was easy to want them to be together and I'm glad they worked through their issues and communicated relatively early on, so the rest of the novella was essentially like a romantic suspense. The berserker / bear situation was pretty hard for me to visualize and understand. Overall, this was just alright and not particularly memorable.

You'll go berserker for this!

Once again this story was well worth the wait.

I loved how, even through her pain and anger Sam still listened to Brandon's explanation of his disappearance. I loved how he respected her vow, while still finding a workaround. And the author's description of how smart and strong women can still be hurt by stupid people was painfully on point.

This author continues to be a one-click writer I will wait years for. (While also hoping we don't have to wait long for the next story.)

Liked this for what it is, very much wish it were a bit longer with more depth.

I was so happy to see this book finally came out; I really enjoyed the first one and wanted to see how things played out with Sam and Brandon. This is rather short and a bit rushed without much world building to make more sense of either main and their motivations for how they acted. It's there, but it's rather wispy and a bit weak. You kinda have to accept it at face value and go with it.

But overall, it was a bit angsty and really cute.

Enjoyed my time with the book - a fun 3 stars

Put bear hero was cute - I wish the book had focused more on the sweet side.

I also liked that it was our heroine who was the titular sheriff. That was different.

The writing was good - as expected from the author. But IRL issues at work made me taking longer than typical - which kept this book from a higher rating.

Still recommended as a fun quick paranormal romance read.

-experienced heroine
-non virgin hero
-dual POV
-weak heroine
-no ow/om drama
-no cheating or scenes with OP
-she's 28 and he's 30 (I think)
-1 year separation - he left her and when he came back he realized that he'd been gone for a whole year, he said time works different for bears/berserkers (they weren't officially together when he left)
-I didn't like how quickly she forgave him, I don't care that he didn't know how much time had passed, she should've kept her legs closed and let him grovel
-epilogue: 10 years later -married with 2 kids

So disappointed

Really liked the first book and the second was ok but this one...WTF, so I duh, pre ordered this one...but I couldn't even get past 50% . reads as if it's condensed, a lot of info and many characters that just got thrown in and wow he disappears for a year and oops, that's how bears are??? And she forgives him immediately of course...Stupid. Not at all like the previous books, this one just doesn't make sense. Delete, Delete, Delete.

Love the nopes

Super enjoyable friends to not friends to lovers. I love how perfect these two are for each other. And woah, those Berserkers are intense to picture. Super sexy times, no cheating, no cliffhanger, a standalone in an interconnected series.

Contains: a sexy bear shifter dude, an equally sexy and sassy lady sheriff, so much sexual tension, easy friendship, gross guy harassing her, feelings of abandonment, some bloody imagery, mentions of trafficking, bad dudes get injured pretty bad including broken bones

Steamy, short and sweet

Been waiting for this book for a while! Absolutely worth the wait. Sam and Brandon are very pragmatic, so no plot is wasted trying to bring them back together. They both still hurt and still need to learn a bit about each other, and the resolution is a good pay out from that. A great addition, and I'm ready for more, if Kate Wilde ever feels like writing it!

Been waiting for this one for awhile. It was good but not as good as the others in the series, in my opinion. The characters were good and I liked the storyline. It just felt a little rushed in places and like it just skimmed over important details in others.
Totally glad this author is back writing again though and looking forward to her next book.
