Toni Wright was one of the most beautiful women you’ve ever seen. The problem with that statement is Toni AKA Anthony Markel Wright wasn’t always whom she claimed to be. At an incredibly early age, Anthony knew he was different. Despite the abuse and slander, he was determined to be himself even if that meant turning his back on everyone and thing in his life. Turning his tormented past into the present-day glamourous life was no easy task. Yes, changing his name to reflect the person he had become was the easy part, everything else came with a price. And after all the games, scams, and deadly consequences associated with Toni’s quest to be free, she finds herself in the most unlikely place, prison. No, not a women’s prison, but a man’s prison.
Not willing to accept defeat, Toni plots out a plan to ensure her survival. In a system that wants to remind Toni of her past, she is determined to cause chaos and havoc all in the name of letting people know just who she really is. Toni Wright is truly a bad bitch, with one thing on her mind, Money, Power, and Respect. Prison doesn’t stop her quest to be seen, it just gives her a new playground to operate under. And since survival is key, Toni devises a plan to do just that and more.
A.A. Lewis brings the drama with The Dark Side of Light. This complicated tale explores the world of transgender identification in the most unlikely places. A. A. delivers the drama, grit, and plot twists that her readers have come to expect. A. A. Lewis introduces you to Toni Wright the new bad bitch on the block in this one-of-a-kind tale.
Toni found herself in a most unfortunate circumstance. Woman in spirit, but male by birth, she finds herself in a male prison. And now she must do whatever it takes to survive a 3 year sentence. As a beautiful trans woman, she is in danger in the facility but forms surprising allyships with various people in the system from inmates to guards and in doing so, she plays a part in affecting the one of the very foundations of the inmate hierarchy. I enjoyed this tale and I highly recommend it!
Loving yourself is hard enough but loving and being accepted for living your truth is a whole other obstacle. Toni went in with no family but cam out knowing she had people who loved her for her
I loved this story from beginning to end. Don't let the cover fool you....there's nothing plain or black and white about this story. It is full of twists and turns and the right amount of drama. A. A. Lewis definitely knew the recipe, and I appreciate her for it.
I was hooked from the first page. The story was so intricately put together that it hooks you and reels you in. You're completely invested in what Toni has going on from the very first page....
The Dark Side of Light is worth more than 5 stars.
First, let me say, this book sat in my Kindle for a minute and honestly the cover didn't speak to me but I've read A A's work over the years so I knew she won't disappoint. And babbbyyy... Ms A A done stepped up her writing game on this way. Brilliantly accurate with an entertaining storyline. It's detailed enough to have you wonder what really goes down in jail as it kept my attention at ever page. Well done, you won't be disappointed at this twisted revenge unfolds.
I'm not sure what I expected when I picked this book up but it exceeded those expectaions. Toni was someone who believed in being your true self. I enjoyed this journey through a trial in her life. But we also get glimpses into the life that shaped Toni. The way the friendships were formed were genuine and others attracted to Toni's light. I was intrigued as to where this was going and satisfied with the way it went.
This was a different type of book for me, but I loved it an I love how Toni grandmother raised him to be who he wanted to be an to live every minute of your life. Toni made sure to take care of herself while learning different aspects of life. Would love to read more.
3.5. great concept of a trans woman surviving a men's prison but the plot was predictable and there were so many grammatical errors. Good, quick read though
I read this first then listened to the Audible. I can honestly say the second time around I got a clearer perspective. Let me tell you, to me, Toni was a boss babe. Despite all she had to endure she still came out of it like the cream on the top. Her Grandma saw this in her but Toni couldn't see it then. I'm glad she ended up with the family she created because hers wasn't shit. You live and learn and what Toni learned was that blood don't make you family and the genuineness in a person will accept you for who you are to them not what people say you are.
Being a transgender has got to be one of life's toughest battles to fight and in the end all you want is acceptance from the people that you love.
