Pretty good action/thriller, but a little slow in parts, interrupted occasionally by non-stop action. I'll try the next in the series to see if it improves. My previous experiences with this author is that it will.

3.85 Rating. A lot of fighting, a lot of punishment on one body, a lot of plotting, and a new look at a seedy underworld of deception for financial gains. Not bad, just not my cup of tea.

I started a new series from an author I hadn't tried before. Point Blank by Logan Ryles was a pleasant surprise. Mason Sharpe seems to be a great charater and the story was good, I will read more in this series and see if I can finish the first six before book seven is released.

Getting right to the point:
"Point Blank" is a Jack Reacher knock-off.

Army veteran Mason Sharpe's world is turned upside down when his beloved fiancée is killed in a school shooting.

Struggling to cope with his grief, Sharpe instinctively heads for the North Carolina town where he and his bride had planned to honeymoon.

In North Carolina, a body washes ashore and Mason Sharpe's investigation begins.

I enjoyed the book's fast pace, but the copycat Jack Reacher plotline was a turn-off.

I listened to the audiobook read by Andy Ingalls, who did an outstanding job with the narration.

3.5 stars, rounded up.

Logan Ryles, a new author for me and great to start a new action thriller series with a new character called Mason Sharpe.

Mason Sharpe the new character in the action series, a strong start with book one.

A strong main character, a great plot, nasty villains, felt like I was there in North Carolina.

A good strong start, four stars.

This was somewhat of a fun read, even though it was pretty violent. But it features a Jack Reacher sort of hero who knows how to fight and almost always wins, along with really bad villains who deserve whatever they get or more. But he's not too quick to kill people, or even start a fight. It's kind of a cross between a Reacher book and Rambo from First Blood. Also, I've been reading a lot of mysteries with flawed heroes who don't fight much, and even though they are usually more interesting and believable, sometimes it's fun to have a hero who is strong.

The story is fairly interesting, with some likable characters, and a lot of unlikable characters - practically an entire town, it seems sometimes. I'm going to read more to see how it develops.

A good start to a new series. When Mason's wife is killed in a school shooting, he's as desperate as one can get. Just when he wants to end his life at a place in a small town, his wife did chose for a honeymoon, a dead body washes up on a beach, and the former cop and army ranger investigates. Lots of action from this place on and some surprises. The book has a Reacher feeling but I'm interested in how Mason will go on.

A recommendation from a bookish friend and I may have found my mystery thriller series to fill the void left by The Terminal List for now. I will definitely be continuing this series sooner rather than later!

This is a fantastic start to a new series and definitely has the Jack Reacher feels.

A devasting and shocking beginning to kick start our adventure and it doesn’t stop there. Despite a small sight of calm, it didn’t last. Mason is then thrown into a mystery that no one wants him in.

I loved that despite being ex-army AND currently a homicide detective he still made mistakes and was slightly naive in his actions. It made Mason more real and wholesome.

I am definitely a new fan, and this will be a fab start to a new series, it even made me choke up at the end. Mason sounds like he will have a fair few adventures and I am looking forward to being there with him.

I loved that these chapters were short and snappy which you don’t generally find with these types of books. I flew throw the book without realising it, as it was just so addictive. I adore Mason and he has a great supporting cast, all women and I do hope we see them all again. I really loved Marley!!

An explosive start and I can’t wait for the next one!

A police officer and former US Army Ranger responds to a school shooting at his fiance's school, and while he stops that, his wife is fatally injured. After release from the hospital, he visits the North Carolina shore where they had planned to honeymoon.

Shortly after arriving, he finds a body in the surf, that does not seem to have died of natural causes. After the local police seem curiously uninterested in investigating thoroughly, he undertakes that investigation himself.

The protagonist is an interesting choice for an action/adventure novel, in that he is tormented by his recent past and that drives his actions here. He experiences significant character growth through the course of the story, which increases reader interest. The supporting characters were more of a mixed bag. None of them was particularly strong other than the retired Coast Guardsman, who we only see onscreen for a few scenes.

The plot is fairly pedestrian and surprising only in that it took an experienced investigator so long to figure out what was going on. But the plot beats were reasonably well handled and the pacing was very good. The action scenes were believable, showing a very competent protagonists who is not omnipotent.

I will be continuing this series. Recommended.

I JUST PUT DOWN A REALLY BAD BOOK …

You know the deal. You get a book that sounds great in the blurb and starts out ok. But as you move thru the story you just aint feeling it. Sometimes you get stubborn and finish it anyway because Mom taught that you finish what you start. Sometimes you just put it back unfinished because life is short and that was a long book that didn’t push your buttons.

Then you pick up another book and the blurb is good. The story resonates with a bit of realistic experience based knowledge. The hero could be anyone you know that came back changed and worked thru it. The situation is about as current as tomorrows news. The resolution is unapologetically appropriate to the situation and what you learned in the service. That was this book.

I only review 4 and 5 stars. I’m not gonna bag on the ones I didn;’t like because someone else will love it. So a four star says it was good and the fifth star means it is worth spending real money on.

I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

The story begins with Mason on a stakeout when he hears of an active shooter broadcast on the radio. The location is at the school where his fiancee teaches. When he arrives and enters the building, he discovers the shooters at the classroom where his fiancee is. He winds up watching her be killed, but then kills the two shooters. Afterwards he takes a leave and decides to go to N.C. where he was going to go on his honeymoon.

When he arrives in town, he takes a ferry out to the island where he was to rent a house for his honeymoon. While on the beach while contemplating something, he discovers a body that washed up to the shore. He then notifies the police of whay he found. After returning back to the town, he winds up meeting the widow of the body that was found. She requested his help in finding out what happened exatly, she didn't believe it was suicide as the police told her. He agreed and began looking into it, but someone was trying their best to disuade him.

Mason was not put off and continued with his investigation. Follow the story and see what obstacles and who wanted him to leave the death alone. The action and situations that Mason has to overcome will keep you enthralled as the investigation comes to an end.

This is definitely a good start to this series and you won't be disappointed as you read it.

Point Blank by Logan Ryles delivers an action-packed start to the Mason Sharpe thriller series. Sharpe's journey from ex-military to detective takes an unexpected turn when tragedy strikes, making the story all the more captivating.

The heart-wrenching loss of Sharpe's wife, Mia, adds a poignant layer to the already engaging plot. As he travels to North Carolina, where they were supposed to spend their honeymoon, he stumbles upon a mysterious body that unravels a hidden business in the small town.

The author skillfully blends elements of a classic thriller, reminiscent of Jack Reacher, with a more personal touch. Sharpe's determination to seek the truth despite facing opposition from both the police and thugs keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

The writing style is crisp, avoiding unnecessary fluff, making the story a breeze to read. If you're a fan of Jack Reacher's adventures, you'll find yourself immersed in Mason Sharpe's thrilling world. Highly recommended!

Held my interest

There are a lot of these vigilante ex-soldier stories out there. This one held my interest mostly because the characters were believable and I could relate. I loved that Mason played Ashokan farewell for the widow. I especially liked the old guy who gave Mason a ride and they talked about how many changes he'd seen in the area throughout his decades there. Then the old guy said the one thing that hasn't changed and wouldn't ever change is Jesus Christ. And Mason saw the rarity of a person whose heart and soul were at peace. It's nice to see an author write something like this because way too many totally ignore faith or villainize it through their characters.

If there's one thing that I like doing, it's discovering new authors. Logan Ryles is certainly a new author for me and an author to watch. I read the synopsis for 'Point Blank' and it certainly sounded like the fast paced, action packed thriller that I love to read. Well it was certainly all that and so much more. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Point Blank' but more about that in a bit.

As soon as I started reading 'Point Blank', I knew that I was in for one hell of a read and then some. I started reading and found that I just couldn't stop. I had picked my Kindle up only intending to read a chapter or two but I became so wrapped up in the story that I lost all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the story. My Kindle wasn't exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn't bear to miss a single second of the story. This story was one that stayed with me whether I had my Kindle in my hand or not. If I wasn't reading the book, I was thinking about it. If I had to put the book down for any reason then I would immediately look forward to being able to pick the book up again. All too quickly I reached the end of 'Point Blank'. I found 'Point Blank' to be a gripping, gritty, fast paced thriller which kept me guessing and which kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.

'Point Blank' is the first book in the series featuring Mason Sharpe. The story is superbly written and then some. The author certainly knows how to grab the reader's attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a story. In Mason Sharpe, Logan Ryles has created a truly memorable character. For me, the story hits the ground running and maintained a fast pace throughout. Reading 'Point Blank' felt like being on one hell of a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. Just when you thought that you could take a moment to gather your thoughts, catch your breath and reclaim your stomach then off the action would go again. I love the way in which Logan Ryles makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action. That's how I felt anyway.

In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Point Blank' and I would recommend it to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Logan's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

If you are a Jack Reacher fan then this is perfect for you! It’s not a carbon copy or a poor rip off by any means though!

It’s a total page turner, full of superb twists and turns. I genuinely couldn’t put it down. I just itches to know what would happen next. And it’s jam packed with fights and bars and just the right dialogue. Authentic not hammy or a pastiche.

This is the first of this author and this series I have read but I will definitely read the others. I love Lee Child’s, Mark Greany, Greg Hurwitz. I’ve got a soft spot for a tough guy and this is already a firm favourite.

Thank you so much to the author and to Zooloo's Book Tours

My Thoughts:

This is my first Logan Ryles read and I am fast becoming a fan!

I always liked the old soldier turned police or crime fighting team stories! Like the Bob Hoon series by JD Kirk. DCI Harry Grimm series by David J. Gatward. Lorne Turner series by Joe Talon. This one is no different! Additionally, you add in the good story telling quality. The likeable characters. And you got me sold!

However, the constant suspicion of the local cops is annoying, though...

This is my first Andy Ingalls listen and I would buy audiobooks by him again.

A tragedy starts the story. A school shooting a police detective Mason Sharpe rushes in to try and save his fiancé only to lose her right in front of his eyes as he is gravely injured himself. With thoughts of ending his suffering he travels to the spot where the two would have honeymooned and winds up finding a dead body on the beach. He finds several things suspicious about the death but the locals, especially the local cops are hostile and want him gone yesterday. Yet he meets the widow and her pain calls to his own along with a nagging suspicion of wrongness he decides to investigate. Obstacles at every turn but that doesn’t put off our detective and former Army Ranger. Something is fishy in Eastport and Mason Sharpe aims to get to the heart of it the more they push him to leave the more determined he is to stay.
Edge of your seat thrilling, heartbreaking and at times both. A stand out, can’t miss read of that there is no doubt. I know it will stay with me for a long time in the way that all great stories do.

Point blank is, on point!

Author Logan Ryles has written a great book .. one with wonderfully fleshed-out characters, and action-galore! Ex-Ranger Mason Sharpe is a force to be reckoned with, something those who try to do him harm find out the hard way. And, there's a softer side to this ex-soldier, too, something the author has woven, nicely, throughout the story, and if the reader is not careful, it's something that may very well bring a tear or two to one's eyes.

It'd be impossible not to compare this author's writing to that of Lee Child, and Ryles' protagonist Mason Sharpe with Child's Jack Reacher .. and I say this to in no way to disparage
Lee Child's writing (as Lee Child is one of my, absolute, favorite authors), but rather to point out that Ryles' writing compares favourably to that of Lee Child's.

I just hope Author Ryles brings us more Mason Sharpe thrillers, as I would very much
like to read more of this Ex-Ranger, as he rights wrongs and brings retribution to those who deserve his punishment.

Today, is my spot on ZooloosBookTours blog tour for Point Blank by Logan Ryles. I read this thriller as an ebook for this tour and I’m so glad that I took part on this blog tour as I really loved reading this detective/crime novel. What a thrilling and exciting novel this was. It gripped my attention and interest right from the start. I, for once, didn’t want to rush reading instead I took my time with this great read.
I loved the author’s writing style, the numerous plot twists in this thriller, character development and the detective element of this novel. This novel was suspenseful, interesting and intelligently written. A rare novel where I knew right from the start that I would be giving it 5 stars, 6 if I could. This is the first thriller which I’ve read by this author, and I was thrilled to discover an author whose writing style I like. I’m hoping to read more novels by the author in the future.
What a riveting read this novel was, and I throughly recommend it to other readers. It was very easy to give this exciting read 5 stars.

A good start to a series

Logan Ryles' Mason Sharpe is a former Army Ranger turned Phoenix detective who intervenes in a school shooting and kills the shooters even as he sees them fun down his fjance. If he just spent more time within that, this would be a very different novel. He had the opportunity to comment on guns and schools, heroism, grief and recovery - but he didn't do that.

Instead, almost as soon as he leaves the hospital, Sharpe hits the road to North Carolina intending to end it all on the beach where they would have honeymooned. And, as you might guess, that doesn't happen. Instead his discovery of a dead body gets his detective sense going again, and then we have the rest.of the book detailing fights, gunfights, criminal activities (including an elaborate scheme making some one very rich, and which seems like a blue print for a real scheme.).

He ain't going back to being a cop. With the number of people he winds up taking out, it looks like he's about to.become some variant of The Punisher. We'll see.in the next volume...

Mason Is A Nice Guy, But Don’t Push Him

Mason Sharpe is devastated after watching his soon-to-be bride murdered by a crazed gunman. He feels there is nothing left to live for, and he heads to Saint Ellen Island, the small North Carolina town that was to be his honeymoon destination. Finding a man’s body washed up on the beach changes everything. His detective instincts kick in when the man’s death is immediately dismissed as a drowning and Mason is urged to leave town. The sheriff insists on keeping his .357 magnum S&W handgun, though, and Mason is not leaving town without it.

I loved everything about this book. Mason is a complex character, at once intelligent, humble, compassionate, cocky, and inquisitive. He wants answers, truthful answers, and he’ll do whatever he has to do to get them. He is just the kind of protagonist that makes a story enjoyable and keeps me turning the pages to see what he does next. I’m looking forward to reading more Mason Sharpe adventures.

I absolutely loved this book and managed to read it in a day. It hits the ground running immediately with a school shooting and in his grief, Mason travels to North Carolina. There he discovers a dead body and when the local police seem quick to dismiss it as a drowning despite ligature marks on the man's wrists, Mason is determined to stick around to figure out what is going on.

The term high-octane thriller is very apt for this book. It is full of action and intrigue as you wonder what the city is hiding, how far does the corruption lie and why are people so determined to run Mason out of town. I love these kind of books and this was no exception. I see the author has several other series so I will take a look at them. I look forward to reading more in this series.

I started this book in the afternoon and finished it in one sitting. Masson a detective with the Phoenix Police Department responds to a shooting at his finances school let's say it does not end well and he ends up where they were going to be spending their honeymoon. Once there he starts to find things that just don’t have any answers for. It all starts with Masson finding a body washing ashore while he is sitting on the beach. There are many twists and turns to this story that keeps you hooked to the pages. All of the different characters just add to the story and also keep the story going as well. I enjoyed the story and all of the characters. Very much worth the read.

Story starts with Sharpe revisiting the horrible day when he lost his love Mia at a school shooting. Author has portrayed true emotions and turmoil Sharpe experience after losing his beloved.
To cope up with the grief Sharpe visits North Carolina where he and Mia were supposed to go for their honeymoon. But he stumbles across a murder which was ruled out as an accident by the local police. Sharpe is now curious to find the truth but he knows there is some secret of the town that none will let him peak also. Sharpe starts questioning the system and the politics which is focused on protecting the powerful lots of the town.

A simple, fast paced thriller which will make you keep going through untill you have read the last word. It's a crazy roller coaster ride.

Good read.

A good read that has Mason a discharged Ranger turned Police answering a call to a school shooting that his fiancée teaches in. Without warning for backup he enters the school and took out the gunmen but not before his fiancée was murdered in front of him and he himself injured. After hospital Mason heads to where he and his fiancée planned to live but was prevented from taking his own life by a body washing up on the beach. Investigation revealed to him that the man washed up was murdered and when local police advised him to leave town he suspected things were wrong. Attempts to persuade him to leave forced him to dig deeper leading him into a fight to uncover the crimes. A good read.

Simplest way to explain this one; Picture Rambo as a police detective. Bad guys never seem to know when to let sleeping dogs lie. Mason Sharpe is a police detective with the Phoenix Police Department. When his fiancé is murdered and he is critically injured responding to a school shooting, he is in for a slow recovery. Then he heads to a small North Caroline town where they were going to honeymoon. A body washes ashore and he see it as murder. The police see it as suicide, but Mason wants justice for the wife and no crooked police department or muscle bound thugs with guns is going to keep that from happening. This was a terrific read! A lot of head busting.
