This was basically me while reading this book.
It had a decent premise but the lack of conflict and the lack of chemistry between the two main characters became a huge problem for me. I was just bored out of my mind.

In nutshell, Delayed Penalty is a story about Auden, college student who was raised by her Russian grandparents and Alexandr - a Russian hockey player. When Alexandr comes to play for one of the Canadian's hockey teams, Auden gets a job as his translator.
I've been trying to write my review for Delayed Penalty for a very long time. Every time I sat down and started writing I couldn't get into it. I stared at a blank page and nothing worth sharing was coming to my mind. I guess Sophia Henry's book is one of those 'meh' 'forget-all-about-it-in-ten-seconds-flat' reads for me.
It was not bad! Nope. There were few parts that I definitely did enjoy, but it just didn't leave a permanent mark on me. I've been reading it without feeling connected to the story or the characters. And that what was really disappointing, because the premise of the story was solid and it had a potential to become stellar new adult sports romance.
Mostly, I missed the chemistry between the main characters. It was more of a slow burn and I hoped for something more intense and blazing. I am not even talking about sex, as I know that it is possible to write intense, sexy story without it, but about the 'spark' that was nonexistent there. Auden and Alexandr didn't have the strength to pull me in. Their relationship lacked of depth and sometimes it felt rushed.
Overall, it was a three stars read for me. Not bad, yet not good enough to make me love it.
However, even though it missed the mark for me, I am certain that Sophia Henry's debut novel will appeal to other readers and I really hope that her next addition to Pilots Hockey series will be more developed.

Auden is a college student that has recently lost her soccer scholarship. To drown away her sorrows she and her best friend decide to "party it up". While out, they meet some super sexy hockey players. With the holiday break looming, Auden is in no hurry to go home with anyone!
Raised by her grandparents, Auden returns to her childhood home for the holiday break. Auden's Grandfather manages a Russian translating company and immediately puts her to work as a translator for a Russian Hockey player named Sasha. Imagine her surprise when her new client is non other than the "hottest" of the hockey players she met in the bar.
Overall, Delayed Penalty left a smile on my face. If you are looking for a light hockey romance (and you can overlook the "extra business" in the plot), then I highly recommend picking it up. I will certainly keep my eye on this series and would definitely read another Sophia Henry book in the future.

"How many times had I wanted someone to stop talking and just hold me?"-AudenTold in Auden's POV, Delayed Penalty was overall an entertaining read. I enjoyed the complex characterization of both of the main characters. Auden and Sasha had a unique back story which I enjoyed reading. The Russian element was also a unique twist to this hockey romance. What was problematic in this read is simply.... there was too much going on! Auden sings in a band, she likes to play soccer, she speaks Russian, and she works as a waitress. All of that coupled with a mini drama of an "old flame" left my head spinning at times. I felt like overall there needed to be more cohesion with the plot and some streamlining with the secondary plot (and characters) as well. Still, I really liked both of the main characters so in the end, I was glad that I picked up this read.

Overall, Delayed Penalty left a smile on my face. If you are looking for a light hockey romance (and you can overlook the "extra business" in the plot), then I highly recommend picking it up. ***Actually 3,5 hot Russians stars***
Well, that book wasn't bad at all!!!
It was having the prospectives to become a great book, but something was a little bit off for me...
I don't know where exactly started to bother me, but it did...
When i started reading it, i was thrilled...
The first 1/3 of the book was very promising and actually was very funny and emotional, but then something was missing in the chemistry between the two main characters...
The heat between them wasn't around and that bothered me very much!!!
How can you have a romance book without romance??? No steamy and intense moments, no sparkle...
And i don't mean sex...
You could have intensity and hot scenes without sex, but no... here we weren't having that...
Except that, everything was moving forward so quickly from nowhere!!! I didn't like the transitions between them... They were fast and a little bit emotionless...
But except the above things, the plot was really good....
First of all, we were having a hot, sexy, steamy Russian hockey player...
At the beginning he seemed cocky, arrogant, too much confident...
Personal, i like that kind of guys!!!
He was very funny and of course that yummy man had an accent. A Russian accent... Isn't it great???
But as the story was developing, we saw a different side of this man...
He was kind, caring and very funny.
If i liked something very mush in that book was Aleksandr (Sasha).
As for the main heroine, Auden...
I didn't connect with her very much, even though that the whole book was from her POV.
Don't get me wrong, she was also good and kind but she was a little bit afraid of everything, too much insecure maybe and her attitude didn't persuade me... much!
But let me say to you some things about the story...
Auden was returning in her grandparents house for her winter break for a month and she is a little bit frustrated because she lost her scholarship in football, so she needs money from her next semester.
Her grandfather arranged a job for her as a Russian translator.
You see, her family is from Russia and she knows the language excellent. She used to help her grandfather in translations but never got her own job with a real person...
The biggest surprise of all is that Auden had to be the translator of a Russian hockey player, but not any player... Aleksandr was the one man that got her attention in a club two days before and that caught her out of guard.
Aleksandr was very cocky, very arrogant and very sure of himself...
How could she handle him???
From that moment, it started a game that Aleksandr was pushing her and Auden was stepping back...
Sasha from the first moment he is trying to get under her skin, but Auden pushed him away from fear...
After the loss of her mother, she had built a wall around her and she doesn't allow to anybody got near her. But Sasha is insisted and he doesn't give up so easily!!!
I liked Sasha very much as i say above...
I liked the fact that he did small lovely things that cracked Auden's walls... but i was disappointed from the fact that Auden didn't make anything in return...
I really liked her best friend KK and i disliked Pasha.
And i think that i had some missing informations about her friend, Drew. After all those things, i think that we needed some closure between him and Auden since we saw him many times and since Aleksandr claimed that Drew had a crush on her, but then nothing. It was like he vanished in thin air... and i needed something there also.
So, that was a good book that was having the potentials to become a great book. To be fair, near to the end the story became more intrigue...
So that was a good effort for first book and i would like to read the second book.

3.75 SASHA STARS
I really enjoyed this book. I love sports romances and hockey is right up there as a fave. This story is about Auden Berezin, a young woman raised by her grandparents and Aleksandr Varenkov (Sasha), a Russian hottie who is a minor league hockey star for the Detroit Pilots (one step below NHL). Auden is hired over the winter break to be Aleksandr's translator even though he doesn't really need one. Auden needs the job because she's just been let go from the soccer team and with that goes her scholarship. Aleksandr wants a translator because he hates talking to the media.
It's obvious these two have a mutual attraction but Auden refuses to cross that line and have her heart ripped to shreds by a player like Aleksandr. What was so refreshing was she couldn't have been more wrong about him! Yes, he was sex-on-a-stick. Yes, he was cocky and confident. Yes, he was a flirt. But he was the furtherest thing from being a man-whore.
Auden and Sasha quickly learn that they've both experienced the tragedy and pain of loss. Auden's father abandoned her before she was even born and her mother was murdered when she was only six. Likewise, Sasha lost both his parents to a car crash. Auden deals with this fear of loss and abandonment by erecting walls and leaving relationships, situations or friends at the first sign of risk or trouble. Whereas, Sasha's tried really hard to live life without fear of what you may lose.
These two develop a relationship
and the story unfolds as they learn to navigate the obstacles of fear, trust, distance and the intrusion of other people.
I really thought Ms. Henry did a great job of conveying Auden's struggles with this and her development in confidence and in Aleksandr. I liked Ms. Henry's writing style and she had me daydreaming of my own cocky, confident and sweet Sasha. So why not 4 stars or higher?
Aleksandr and Auden spend a lot of time apart and while the separation serves a purpose and adds to Auden's growth, I wanted more of these two. When they were together, they were great. I got those flutters in my stomach at the unexpected and sweet things Sasha would do and I was deeply invested in having their relationship flourish.
Also, there wasn't a lot of hockey although I loved the Canadian hockey references! And finally, I really would have loved having Aleksandr's POV or for me to have had a deep dive into his thoughts, which could have been explored more had there been more interactions with Auden. Needless to say, I really liked this book and I'm excited to see where this series goes and which Pilots hockey player's story is next!

This is a debut novel by Sophia Henry I enjoyed her writing style the story is told from the female POV.
I enjoyed Delayed Penalty and I liked the characters but I would of liked more time spent on A & A's relationship there were no steamy moments and I felt that a lot of it was skimmed over to much blanks for me and I would have like more development between Auden and Jason. After 63% I must admit I started to skim the pages so I could get to the ending to find out what happens.
Also the characters are twenty years old and I very rarely read YA so this is my problem as I found some of the situations a bit childish.
Again this is my opinion, if the blurb catches your eye please read and make your own decision.

If you know me, you know NA is not my favorite sub-genre of romance. And this is a debut novel for Ms. Henry. She knocked it out of the park. She got me when the hero is Russian. I love Russia, been there multiple times. My parents were even missionaries there after the wall fell. Yes, there was a bunch of twenty-something angst, but there was a great romance, a loyal bunch of friends, and a smoking hot hockey player. I loved it and can't wait to read more of this series...but not Pasha. He can go back to the motherland.

So I’ll start my review by telling you that I got an uncorrected proof so things might change by the time it is released for everyone. I’ll try not to go into too much detail so I don’t spoil anything though.
This is a good book for you if you’re looking for some Russian goodness. Or some hot hockey players. And I love me a hot Russian accent so there were lots of elements of this book that I really enjoyed. However it didn’t draw me into the story like I was hoping it would. Auden and Aleksandr were a cute couple but I felt like their relationship wasn’t as flushed out and developed as it could have been. They really didn’t spend that much time together in the book so it was hard to really believe their intense feelings for each other. They spend maybe a few weeks together in total, if that, and they’re then completely in love. Then he’s gone for months and only comes back once and they fight and don’t talk for like 3 months, then of course they make up. But if you really take a look how much time they actually spent together as a couple it makes it really hard as a reader to truly believe their relationship and become invested in it. Overall I think it was an ok read, I’ll probably read the next in the series because I think that the author has a good idea here, she just needs some better story development.

Auden and Aleksandr first meet at a bar when he uses a horrible pick up line to get her attention. But all it does is make her think he's a douche bag not worth her time. When she goes home her grandfather, a Russian translator in his free time, tells her that he has an assignment for her. Excited at the idea of working with an actual person who needs a translator and not just old documents, she jumps on the chance. She just never expected her new assignment to be Aleksandr.
I love hockey romances and this was another win for me. Auden and Aleksandr were a great couple and it was great to see when they finally came together. Auden didn't want to be attracted to the cocky hockey player and just wanted to do her work and make money for school. Aleksandr wasn't going to give up easily though and kept pushing himself in her life. I'm glad he did because they were a cute couple.
It was really refreshing to read about a pro-athlete that wasn't a complete man-whore. Aleksandr was a good character and despite being cocky and, in the beginning, a little douche-y he was sweet with Auden and I loved that. I wish I knew a little more about him, though, because I feel like we didn't get too much of his history. We learned that his parents were killed in a car accident and he was able to relate to Auden, whose mother was killed when she was young, because of that. But we didn't learn much else about him.
A lot of the focus was on Auden, especially at the end when she learned some family secrets. It was interesting, what she had learned, but I wanted more of her and Aleksandr. He wasn't around too much near the end and I kept waiting for him to come back. When he finally did it felt kind of rushed.
Overall, this is a really good sports romance with lots of intrigue and an adorable couple. Any fan of hockey romances should give this a try. It was my first book by Sophia Henry but will not be my last!

Auden was raised by her Russian grandparents after the loss of her mother. Her grandfather gets her a translating job with a Russian hockey player. Auden is a big hockey fan so this should be a cake job.
Alexandr, known as a ladies man, is the hockey player Auden is assigned to help. Alexandr fakes not understanding English to avoid speaking with the press and intentionally puts Auden on the spot.
Its a rocky romance with personal past life experiences coming into play. Of course the couple has shared nationality, but the romance was a bit awkward.
All around I found the story to be a sweet and easy romance. No huge passionate fire, no intense conflict just a completely slow growing relationship. 3.5 stars.

The Good : This book had me at hockey romance. Add in that it would be a Russian player and his translator and I was intrigued. While there is alot going on, one of the best parts are Auden’s friendships and the unexpected relationships that turn up during her investigation of her mother’s life, who was killed when she was six. The other highlight was Auden and Aleksandr getting a chance to connect via their memories, hers of her her mother, his parents, all of whom died tragically. It gives them a bond that is believable and I would have loved to delve into their relationship more through those conversations.
The Bad : This is first person POV and it’s a bad sign when you struggle to connect with the character whose head you’re in. Auden is almost textbook Mary Sue - stunning, athletic, blond hair/blue eyed virgin (but of course completely oblivious to her charms even though all the guys want her). She's a soccer player, translator, singer, hip hop fitness class instructor, studying for her social work degree while waitressing, and she creates an afterschool program in two cities? All while psychoanalyzing herself and telling the reader exactly why she’s struggling to fall in love because of her abandonment issues just made her irksome, not relatable. She has moments when I sympathized with her, especially in her scenes with her grandparents. I just wish overall I had liked her more.
Everything in Between : I could probably get past that, because I have liked Mary Sue type characters on occasion. As a romance junkie, I need The Big Three Firsts (first meet, kiss and love scene) to knock my socks off. Do that and I can forgive ALOT. Here, the first meet made Aleks seem douchey like he was hooking up with another (no es bueno), the first kiss wasn’t very memorable and the first time had a blink and you miss it vibe to it. Also, it’s a slow burn, which added to my frustration. The scenes where they connect over their families were good but the transition from Aleksandr being douchey to dreamy too quickly didn’t help. There’s not alot of heat between them until late in the game and even then, it’s fairly tame, considering how fast Aleksandr’s declaring undying love. When it came to the romance, I wasn’t drawn in.
Much like Auden, this book tries to be all things to all people, and while there are scenes I enjoyed, most of it felt extraneous to the romance, which is what brought me in the door, so to speak. While marketed as a hockey romance, it’s not quite that, since the hockey and romance seems almost secondary to the rest of Auden’s life.
It was ok. There are good moments, but ultimately suffered from a lack of focus on the romance, so it didn’t really work for me.

I love a good sports romance, and I have to say I did go into Delayed Penalty with expectations of getting at least that. I am sure that this book will work for a lot of readers, but having got to 27% I was expecting more to have happened, and maybe experiencing a modicum of a connection between Auden and Aleksandr, sadly it all felt a little superficial and nothing up to this point had really been given any depth or explanation, apart from constant reference to his hair and muscles.
”I am Russian. Cool head, blazing heart.”
My other issue is the fact that once again Once in a while it would be nice to read of a couple of twenty something characters, who have a regular family, or even a portion of one, waiting at their fictional home for them. Add to that Auden’s abandonment issues, when her grandparents actually seemed to treat her pretty well, and Aleksandr’s reasons for needing a translator turning out to be utter bullpoopie, and I have reached the point that I know that this book isn’t really for me.
I know as a Flirt title this book wasn’t meant to be a heavy or emotionally charged read, but I did expect to at least have a little development for the main characters after reading over a quarter of it. Not entirely sure that I would look to read anything else from this series.

Auden Berezin is at a crossroads in life, she has been let go from her soccer team meaning she loses the soccer scholarship and she has a month break to figure out what to do next. When her grandfather gives her a job as a Russian translator to a hockey player, she figures it will help with paying her tuition. She did not expect to have the player be Aleksandr Varenkov who she briefly met and knew he was a player.
Aleksandr has no limits and it includes teasing Auden. He likes her but Auden is not like the ski bunny's he ordinarily meets. The more he gets to know the more he wants to build something special. With distance on their side will they be able to handle the intensity of their feelings? Auden feels like everyone leaves and so will Aleksandr. Aleksandr wants Auden to trust in what they have, can she let go of her past to have a future?
Very good. The banter and chemistry between Auden and Aleksandr is off the charts. Delayed Penalty had romance, humor, sports, and conflict. Perfect for when you want to sink into a book for the day and lose yourself. Looking up more from this talented author.

Auden has been cut from the soccer team which means she has lost her soccer scholarship and needs to find a summer job quick. She goes back home to her russian grandparents, who raised her, and her grandfather assigns her a job - to be a translator for a russian hockey player. This excites Auden greatly - she loves hockey and although this isn't for the professional Detroit Red Wings team, it's for the minor league team and that's just fine by her. But her job is going to be complicated.
Aleksandr Varenkov can actually speak English, he just doesn't like to be bothered to be interviewed. When Auden shows up, he decides to initiate her by giving her ridiculous answers to interview questions for her to interpret. Although he gives her a hard time, he grows to like her, fast.
There are many reasons why this book didn't work for me. First, I love hockey romance. Love. But in this book, hockey is not prominent. If Aleksandr does have a game or practice, those hockey scenes are glossed over quickly. So we miss out on the hockey atmosphere. Aleksandr starts off kind of douchey as he tries to pick up Auden in a bar and then acts like a jerk on her first day at work. I like a jerky hero who turns it around, but he turns it around too fast. He goes from jerk to big, goofy guy like he has a complete personality change.
There isn't a lot of build up or sexual tension in their romance and they declare love pretty early. The physical romance scenes also were not memorable.
And there is an odd scene where Auden gets drugged at a bar and she ends up blacking out. In the middle of the night, she wakes up (in her own bed) and Aleksandr has climbed through her window completely drunk to make sure she is okay. Auden doesn't even seem to care that someone drugged her drink. It's mentioned that Aleksandr punched the guy who did it, but - it's just a really weird scene. I feel like the gravity of what happened is just tossed to the side.
This story just didn't come together for me. Auden, by herself, I enjoyed. She is a feisty heroine. I like that she got cut from the soccer team and has to reevaluate her college career. I just didn't like Aleksandr or how the story plays out.

No penalties in this debut novel by Sophia Henry. This book is a fun, fantastic read!
I have a soft spot for sports fiction. But I’m often hesitant because sometimes the sport aspect takes center stage — that becomes the plot of the story and not the relationship. No need to worry about that with Delayed Penalty. In fact, don’t worry if you don’t know much about hockey, because the focus of this story is on two flawed, but very redeemable people who you want to see make it.
Auden is a college student whose just trying to make it in life. Enter Aleksandr, the Russian hockey player that is the stereotypical alpha male… only that he is not. He comes across that way initially, which is why Auden could care less for him. She is his translator…and that’s it. Until he becomes more than that. As she gets to know him, the dynamic chemistry between them unveils a relationship that i both sweet and searing.
Sophia Henry renders her characters with a sculptor’s touch. She gives just enough detail, allowing the reader to fill in the rest—making the characters that much more relatable. Their budding romance is refreshing. The story isn’t about the intimacy — it’s not about a play by play — it’s about learning something about human nature and how people who are damaged—flawed--can find completion from the most improbable partner.
As a side note, I loved the little details of the Russian culture. I learned things and in some cases recognized them as traditions that were assimilated into my culture. The authenticity of these details added color to the world Henry created.
Highly recommended. Looking forward to more from this author.

This book didn't work for me unfortunately. I found it hard to invest in the characters. Perhaps because it read like a NA and lacked any real steam and felt disjointed.

This is a slow-burn hockey romance about a Russian player and his translator. Auden is part Russian and gets a job as a translator for the Aviators. Her client, Aleksandr, is a man who sees her and immediately wants her. She wants him too- but she doesn't want to risk her job.
"From the scar on his left cheek to the smug smirk of his lips, he looks exactly my type: dangerous, confident, and totally lickable." "Aleksandr is an untouchable man I want to touch so badly."
Their chemistry is slow-building but it's there. And it's so sweet! There's talk about past traumas involving both of them and they each try to help the other overcome them. When they finally get together, sparks fly.
“I have no effect on anyone. I’m a ghost. Forgettable.”
“A ghost is haunting, possessing.” Aleksandr places his hand on top of my thigh as he leans closer. His lips brush my ear as he speaks. “You are anything but forgettable. You are so beautiful, the sun dims when you’re around.”
I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the rest in the series!

Auden (love that name) finds herself the translator for Russian minor league hockey star, Aleksandr (we’ll just call him Alek) upon her return home from college break. Beyond the love of hockey and the Russian language, these two share something else in common. Loss.
Alek is all kinds of cocky and Auden tries to avoid his charms for as long as she can until she just can’t help but give in. But what I loved was that Alek wasn’t really what he seemed, but didn’t falter and showed Auden exactly what he was all about pretty easy. For a girl like Auden who isn’t one to easily trust, he was perfect for her.
Auden’s character struggles through most of this book to find herself. Her past has left this empty place inside of her. As she struggles to learn just who she is she begins to piece together where she came from. There were times when she was overly annoying, but I really think her story held enough to make you feel for her. So she got a pass on a lot of it.
For Alek, I liked him right from the start. I loved him cocky and I loved him sweet. His past was just as jaded as Auden’s but that past shaped him differently.
The one thing that I had trouble with was the lack of time we get of these two together. I felt like I connected with both of them, but separately. I really wanted more time of just them to make that connection solid. Overall a good read. A good love story and I liked both of these characters.

I don’t even know, you guys. This book was supposed to be perfection. After the shitty month I’ve had, I promised myself I’d accept nothing less than perfect from a debut author's book which had the most promising blurb. And good God, I couldn’t even read past the 27% mark without wanting to swallow my Kindle and choke on it.
Auden was a shallow pool of self-pity and this:
“As a lifelong hockey-player appreciator, my brief encounters with a semi-dressed Aleksandr already had my below-the-bell-button areas buzzing like bees on speed. Thinking about him showering could push me over the edge. Or into his arms.” - (ARC, location 543)
How…charming.
And of course, sexy Russian Aleksandr, whom I didn’t read too much of because 27% yo, but from what I did read, he was an arrogant asshole. There was this part where he almost publicly humiliated Auden on her first day of work. Fucking unbelievable. And his excuse?
“It was a joke. A prank. Hockey players do that to rookies.(…) You’re gonna quit over a stupid joke?” - (ARC, location 607)
Good Lord, give me strength.
Not comparable to the work of Sawyer Bennett AT ALL. Go home, children. Nothing of interest to see here.

Ever since reading Elle Kennedy's Off-Campus Series and Sawyer Bennett's Cold Fury Hockey Series, I've become somewhat obsessed with reading hot hockey player stories. I mean, really. *fans self*
But unfortunately, I just could not get into this story. I don't know what the issue was, but I didn't connect with the characters, and I didn't really like the storyline very much. There wasn't much chemistry, and I could take or leave the romance. I couldn't even keep up with who the characters were and I'm pretty sure I won't read the rest of the books in this series.
With lack of chemistry and forgettable characters, Delayed Penalty is a book you can delay reading.

This was classic New Adult style reading with drama, uncertainty, and fast love. I have to say that I did like the story and loved Aleksandr. He was clever, tender, darling, and passionate. I even liked the Auden. The two together were funny and sweet because they worked but argued and teased. I'm keeping the short and sweet. I simply liked the story and didn't find myself struggling to read it or finish it. Delayed Penalty receives a content 4 stars from me.

Makes me sad to say this but I struggled with Delayed Penalty.
I failed to connect with Auden and the storyline just didn't click with me.
When I read the summary I was really looking forward to Delayed Penalty but unfortunately it wasn't for me.

Hot Russian hockey player meets feisty tutor? Yes, please! I loved watching Aleksandr and Auden work through their broken pasts together. Delayed Penalty is a unique NA romance that packs an emotional punch.

Aleksandr and Auden are two damaged souls. They both have similar pasts and understand each other's pain. The chemistry between them was very touching.
Overall, I loved Delayed Penalty. The drama wasn't annoying, and I loved the characters.

I was so excited to start a new hockey series. I am a huge fan since my husband has played for a long time, so hockey books are one of my weaknesses. This one was raw, real, and at times, intense.
Auden has suffered a huge loss at a young age that has shaped her into the person she is today. She is closed off, hides her emotions, and tries to make everyone happy. She is also afraid to love.
“A normal girl would snuggle into his strong warm arms and let him hold her, but I wasn’t a normal girl. I was completely messed up. So messed up that I spilled my life story to a guy I liked but wouldn’t allow myself to get close to.”
Aleksandr is a Russian hockey player. He is playing for a team in Detroit and needs a translator. Since Auden fluently speaks Russian, she is hired for the job. Of course, first impressions leave a lasting impression and appearances can be deceiving.
Auden is physically attracted to Aleksandr, but refuses to let him know how he affects her.

At times, I wanted to shake Auden. She could be so dense and clueless and even selfish. But as we got to know her, I was able to connect more and more with her.
I loved Aleksandr! He was such a hot hockey hunk, yet so kind and protective. I also liked the band as well as Kristen, Auden’s best friend and Jason. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the next in the series! ~ Tiffany, 4 stars
Auden has suffered a huge loss at a young age that has shaped her into the person she is today. She is closed off, hides her emotions, and tries to make everyone happy. She is also afraid to love.
“A normal girl would snuggle into his strong warm arms and let him hold her, but I wasn’t a normal girl. I was completely messed up. So messed up that I spilled my life story to a guy I liked but wouldn’t allow myself to get close to.”
Aleksandr is a Russian hockey player. He is playing for a team in Detroit and needs a translator. Since Auden fluently speaks Russian, she is hired for the job. Of course, first impressions leave a lasting impression and appearances can be deceiving.

This book is exactly why I'm leery of new adult books. The heroine might as well have had a split personality for all her character made sense. None of it made sense, especially not all those pieces together.
And don't get me started on the fact that this college junior is working as an interpreter (not a translator, get it right, please). It drives me crazy that people think any random bilingual (which is what she was) can do my job. The way her language skills were described, there's no way she would have been able to interpret. And he had to translate his Cyrillic tattoos for her, but yet she had translated documents previously. Really?
Sasha's character was actually decent, but that didn't make up for the rest of the characters, most of whom were assholes.

I cannot believe this is a debut for Sophia Henry. So good. I was so sad to look down at my progress and see I was at 97%. I wanted more of this couple! I loved them.
The situations were life like, but not overly dramatic. They had both had really rough times, but they were working through them. Hockey isn't overly focused on in this story if you don't like sports books. Yes, it's there, but it's not the point once you get into the book. I guess it's what brings them together.
Auden is to tutor Aleksandr so he can speak and answer interview questions after hockey games. I thought at first the Russian part of the story would throw me off, but the author wrote it well where you didn't get confused.
There are bumps and problems. And you find yourself wondering what's going to happen with who.
I'm happy with the ending. I would've loved a little more epilogue, further down the road, but it was still a great ending.
Also, I hope all these characters make appearances in the next book(s). I need more info on them!

In all honesty I clicked this one because it said "if you love Sawyer Bennett you will enjoy this story" and truth is I DID. This had all the elements that work for me. An "asshole" type athlete, hotter than should be legal, a "man-whore", but when he connects with the right girl, all of that vanishes and all he can see is her. I loved the connection between them, the shared language that connects them on a personal level. All of it. I see some people viewed it as YA, that may be true, but a love story for me is all in the connection, not swapping of bodily fluids..lol First time reading this author, won't be the last. Really enjoyed it! Thanks for allowing me to read it early!

June 14, 2015DNF @ 35%. I just couldn't get into this book. It was promoted on Netgalley as being similar to the works of Sawyer Bennett. Not even close IMO.
