I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this book, but it really caught me off guard—in a good way. It’s not filled with complex theories or anything like that. It’s more like someone just talking to you about what it means to actually work together, not just as a team, but as humans.

There’s one part where the author talks about trust—not as a strategy, but just something you build little by little. That part really stuck with me. It reminded me of something simple my old manager once said: “People don’t need to be pushed—they need to be heard.” And this book kind of echoes that.

I didn’t feel like I had to rush through it. I read a bit, paused, and then kept coming back. It’s not loud or flashy, but the message stays with you.

“Me” to “We”
Honestly I have worked with organisations in past (mainly startups) which shows great potential initially with all things in the presentations but the actual implementation is lacking. The product is great but the working culture is not Upto the mark. I found many of them to be egoistic especially those who can’t let go of their egos. This book teaches us to be empathetic and value team work. The author have formed a framework which is easy to understand and implement. In the first few pages only he has listed these points as his presentation and then later in the book he explains. I am definitely going to implement these 10 principles in building my own business. This book makes me optimistic. Thus, I highly recommend this book.

Every once in a while I pick up management books, mostly for different perspectives and pointers on how to be a better administrator. I haven’t resonated with one yet as stronger as I did with Begin with WE. Kyle’s 10 We’s are the exact kind of company culture I am trying to cultivate, and hearing his ideas played out at real organizations got me motivated to try implementing this mindset at my own organization. It takes a certain kind of person, and a certain kind of org, to focus on a completely we-oriented (versus me-oriented) culture, but if you’re looking to implement something like this, this book is a great place to start.

This is a big book with big principles and stories from big corporations

It sets out the 10 WEs: 10 principles on which all organisations should base their behaviour, to drive their operations, and ultimately build their culture.

They are 10 clear and unambiguous statements which are described in actionable terms, exemplified by stories and are simply irrefutable.

One of the ones which resonate with me, reading through my lens of self-aware leadership is WE 2: WE lead by example. For self aware leadership, modelling behaviour is a big consideration and as Kyle says, “…instead of QC for your product or service, you’re doing QC on your own behavior and attitude”. The essence of self-awareness.

WE 9: WE embrace challenge also aligns with my ideas about feedback and learning from it. Check out the Embrace-O-Meter to work out where you are and decide if it’s where you want to be. WE 3, 5, 6 and 8 align too.

The context of the book is big companies in big corporate America so not everything in the book will resonate, if you haven’t worked in those kind of places and spaces. But the messaging is clear and regardless of your work context, these 10 WEs are principles that organisations should aspire to.

My interest is self-aware leadership and I think this book is about WE-aware leadership. It would be great to follow the journey through from self-awareness to WE-awareness because they both contribute to a Culture of Excellence, which this book seeks to build and sustain.

I also think this book has a side hustle as an autobiography of Kyle’s contribution to corporate America. The stories are really good. I’m lucky to have recorded a podcast episode with Kyle a little while ago ready for release in the Autumn, and reading the stories in his voice makes far more sense than in mine!

A good book to make you think about your leadership and organisational standards. Probably most relevant to people working at the very top of big organisations and big teams and able to make big changes, but plenty to learn from wherever you are in whatever organisation you’re in

To Begin with the book WE is a refreshing take on leadership and teamwork, painted with the broad strokes of empathy and collaboration. McDowell’s prose is simple yet profound, guiding readers through the delicate art of fostering a unified workplace. His anecdotes and insights are like brushstrokes on a canvas, creating a vivid picture of how shifting from an I mentality to a  WE approach can transform not only businesses but also the lives of those within them. The stories he shares are relatable and inspiring, making the concepts easy to grasp and implement. Whether you are working in a company for years or just starting out, the WE principles are a must for you! Not only are they easy to understand, the WE strategies are a breeze to implement. This philosophy is important for the one at the top, to the ones at the bottom, creating a true team effort that will drive the company to success on autopilot. The content of this book may not introduce groundbreaking ideas, yet its 10 principles offer a logical approach to team and company leadership, particularly for senior managers. Kyle adeptly reinforces these fundamental concepts, providing an efficient and well-explained method, starting with the powerful concept of WE Personally, I appreciate this book and intend to use it as a practical leadership manual in my daily activities.

Relatable & inspiring – offering actionable insights towards developing “WE- oriented” culture for corporates & individuals aspiring to become trustworthy leaders harnessing culture of excellence.

Having substantial experience in corporate career, I strongly felt the need to pick up this book and it did not disappoint me. It beautifully narrates the power of “WE” driven teams as “ME” oriented leadership often fails to cultivate a culture with strong foundations. Each chapter strongly talks about the foundations of how passion, purpose, and authenticity drive the culture of excellence. It will certainly help you focus on the aspects that are “must haves” in your journey to become an authentic & trustworthy leader.

The central theme of this book tackles how teams aligned working towards a common mission are more successful than the employees & leaders who seek individual recognition.
The referred 10 WE’s are 10 powerful principles that possess the impact to change organization & individuals beliefs as it establishes a common framework to operate upon and the cultural currency needed to drive cultural shifts across organizations.

Inspired by Corporate America examples, the book has loads of practical strategies, real life stories, different scenarios, human facets of motivation & recognition and stairways to self-reflection that could help you become an influential & credible leader.

Begin with WE is a fresh and inspiring take on leadership and teamwork. Kyle McDowell focuses on the importance of empathy and working together, showing how these values can create a strong, unified workplace. His writing is simple but meaningful, guiding readers on how to shift from thinking "I" to thinking "WE," which can change both businesses and the lives of the people in them.

What makes this book special is how Kyle mixes practical advice with real human stories. The examples he shares are easy to relate to and help make his ideas clear and easy to put into practice. This isn’t just a book—it’s a call to action for leaders to use the power of teamwork and create a workplace where everyone feels important and listened to.

Whether you’ve been in a company for years or are just starting out, the WE principles are a must. They’re simple to understand and easy to apply, helping to create a real team effort that can drive a company to success. While the book may not introduce brand-new ideas, its 10 principles offer a solid, logical approach to leadership, especially for senior managers. Kyle explains these concepts well, starting with the powerful idea of WE.

Personally, I really like this book and plan to use it as a practical guide in my daily leadership tasks.

From the first principle, “We do the right thing. ALWAYS,” I knew this wasn’t just another leadership book. It’s grounded, honest, and rooted in values that are often missing in real workplaces. The writing doesn’t feel like theory or corporate jargon. It feels like someone speaking from experience, holding up a mirror and asking, “Are you really leading, or just managing?”

One of the most striking parts for me was the idea of measuring by outcomes, not activity. It made me think of all the times I have seen (and been part of) processes that looked productive on the surface but achieved very little in the end. The book doesn’t just point out these issues. It gives you a framework to move forward, one that is simple, but not simplistic.

Each “WE” principle encourages a mindset shift. From ego to empathy, from silence to speaking up, from individual pride to team accountability. These are values I want to carry into every project and collaboration I take on in the future.

I didn’t expect to take notes while reading this, but I did. I didn’t expect to come back to specific lines, but I will.
If you're someone who values authenticity, growth, and creating meaningful impact within a team, this book is a must-read.

BEGIN WITH WE by Kyle McDowell is a great guide for aspiring leaders.

It provides a 10-principle framework which can help you build a culture a excellence.
These 10 principles focus on shifting our approach from "I" to "WE" emphasising teamwork, accountability and continuous growth.

Some of the principles that personally resonated with me are -

📍 WE PICK EACH OTHER UP -  "We must foster an environment in which no one person is more important or better than the next. We all need help from time to time, and it’s everyone’s responsibility to pick up our teams and coworkers when needed. Doing so creates a connected tribe with a caring sense of community."

📍WE MEASURE OURSELVES BY OUTCOME--  " We are paid for outcomes; that’s what the real world judges us by. We must ensure that all activity is directly linked to outcomes."

📍WE CHALLENGE EACH OTHER

📍WE  DO THE RIGHT THING ALWAYS

By applying these principles individuals and organisations can foster growth, drive collaboration and achieve lasting impact.

It has practical strategies and inspiring stories. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to transform their professional life.

I won't stand here and pretend to have all the answers, because i don't. However, make no mistake, I am here to win! And my approach is probably different than what you've experienced prior to me joining. But I'm not naive enough to think, I can make progress on my own.

Teamwork is a silent strength of any good governance and leadership. A good leader isn't born, it is made through the loyalty, hardwork and honesty of the team.

This book talks about 10 "WEs" that represent how we need the team in order to function and work towards change in society.

The points mentioned in this book might seem basic but that's what self help books do, help us use the knowledge we already have.

Growth isn't achieved, it is a process. And for the smooth functioning of that process, we require a team that challenges one another, works with integrity, honesty, accepts our mistakes and so much more.

For someone who is trying to begin with a leadership role and feels nervous, should definitely read this book. It is short and to the point so it can be completed in a single sitting!

Happy reading!

Wow! "Begin With WE" really hit home for me. As someone who’s experienced both great and terrible leadership, this book is a game-changer for understanding how to unlock the full potential of a team. Kyle McDowell does an excellent job of cutting through the fluff and offering practical, no-nonsense wisdom. The 10 WEs are straightforward, yet incredibly powerful. One of the quotes that really stood out to me was, “True leadership starts with a decision to serve others.” It’s such a simple yet profound remainder that leadership isn’t about being in charge, but about elevating and empowering those around you. I also love McDowell’s focus on leading with authenticity. He stresses that it’s not about pretending to have all the answers, but being open, honest, and genuinely invested in the success of your team. Since reading this book, I’ve already started applying some of these principles to my leadership style, and it’s made a noticeable difference in how I approach both work and relationships. It’s definitely been a transformative experience.

"Begin With WE" by Kyle McDowell is a must-read for everyone who is a leader or wants to improve their leadership abilities. The book delves deeply into the dysfunction that frequently occurs in businesses, primarily as a result of the "me oriented" mindset that is so common in today's world. With his framework The 10 WEs, Kyle reframes this idea by emphasizing the development of a team-oriented culture that can lead to actual success.

I truly like how approachable and straightforward Kyle puts things in this book. He illustrates how changing from a "I" to a "WE" perspective may result in significant gains in both the personal and professional spheres using examples from everyday life. The suggestions are realistic and simple to put into practice immediately.

The book reads more like a dialogue with a valued mentor than a lecture because of Kyle's refreshingly direct and honest writing style. This book will be a welcome change if you're sick of the same old leadership cliches. I heartily endorse it to leaders of all stripes!

The book "Begin with WE," for those interested in developing and improving the abilities of great leaders within an organization or setting up an inclusive work environment. The book is all about a culture that leans towards a "WE" model. It also explains how a leader who adopts a traditional "ME" way in leadership falls short of building a very firm foundation for success. This touches on the passion, purpose, and authenticity that drive excellence.

Coming from a corporate background, the advice in this piece of practical work, together with its inspirational and motivative message, proves itself highly relevant to underpinning my journey as a leader. These insights into leadership are upon not only that they are relevant and applicable but also actions of interest for the experienced leader to read and practice in improving his or her leadership approach. This book significantly refreshes the perspective on how one leads from empathy, collaboration, and precipitation into behavior with a commitment to creating a positive, inclusive workplace.
