Hockey is an Alpha’s game, which is why Omega Alonso needs to keep his designation a secret—especially from fellow rookie Emmett ‘Levy’ Levine.

But when Levy goes into a pseudo rut and Alonso’s suppressants fail, Alonso has to deal with the danger of someone else knowing. Of someone else holding that power over him.
But…Levy doesn’t seem to want that leverage. All Levy wants is Alonso’s friendship—to be the future of the Gotham Hounds together.

Alonso’s never had a friend like that before. And, well, if he starts wanting a little more…that’s his own problem.
Falling in love isn’t in the cards for an Omega like Alonso—someone who will have to keep any relationship in the shadows as long as he’s playing hockey.

Levy deserves more than that. More than him. And Alonso’s just going to have to live with that.

Cause we're grown, baby, you know it / Want it but you just won't show it / Eyes glued to me like you're slow motion / Got you hooked on my potion, baby (Act A Fool – Kehlani).

In the wake of devastatingly bleak world events, sometimes the best form of respite is finding a book that you can’t help but get lost in. Um…. this is not that book. The thing is, I don’t really get the whole “omegaverse” thing. I just don’t get it, maaan. I mean, I guess the Alonso’s whole “I’m sad because I’m an omega in a world of alpha males” thing is supposed to evoke the same imagery of a closeted man whose strained relationship with his father forces him to internalizes his queerness and present to the world as a “manly man.” It's a tale as old as time, really. And to have a story about the main character shedding this poisonous mindset and learning how to love and be loved in return? I can’t lie, there's a good foundation there! But you know what else works wonders with this narrative structure? Literally just writing about a queer person being in the closet! I’m generally of the mind that no Alpha & Omega book has ever been improved by simply being an Alpha & Omega book. Like, if you removed all the talks of “alphas” and “omegas” from this book entirely, I truly believe nothing about this its story would have changed at all. Sorry to those who like these kinds of books, but I guess it’s (still) not my thing. It just sucks because every time I see one of these cool looking books I get really excited! But then the trouble starts whenever they start talking about “scents” and “alpha energy” or whatever, and I just kind of check out, you know? Maybe it’s because a lot of these phrases have been tainted by those weird dudes in real life who are always talking about being an “alpha male” or a “sigma male,” and whenever I see that shit in the wild it activates my fight-or-flight response. Seriously, Alonso kept talking about being an omega “in a room with alphas,” and all I could do was roll my eyes so far back it I might as well have been chanting “Azarath Metrion Zinthos.” So, why even bother with this book if I don’t like the Alpha & Omega stuff? Well, all I’m going to say is that I’ll stop reading these kinds of books when they stop putting hot dudes on the cover.

Nonetheless, if I hang-up my hang-ups for a second over there on that coat rack, I’d honestly say that Fresh Ice is not bad at all. There’s a cute sports romance hidden somewhere between the lines and I can safely say that this was enough of a light and easy read that it honestly helped ease me back into reading, because I’ve otherwise only really been able to stomach reading comics for the last couple days. Besides, there were definitely a lot of cute (and hot) moments, so I hope this helped put a stop to my rapidly growing reputation of being the “guy who hates everything.” Besides, anyone who knows me knows that not only am I a huge fan, but that I’m also a big understander…er of sports too! Like, I get it, maaan. Sometimes a ball goes in a hole, sometimes it goes in a net, and if we’re getting really crazy, we get to see a ball going into a hoop. Wild stuff, really! And in the case of Fresh Ice, sometimes Levy goes balls deep in Alonso. Bazonga! Or whatever the fuck that guy says. Just kidding, I know it's "bazinga," I'm just being silly. So quirky! Anyway, low-hanging fruit aside, I really don’t mean to be facetious about sports, a thing that a lot of people love, I just can’t help it sometimes. It’s mostly that I’m always marveling at a sports guy’s ability to feel such communal joy at their favorite sport, whether or not their team ends up winning or losing, and I’m probably just jealous because I don’t get it. I guess that’s a little similar to Alonso’s character arc throughout this book in a way, because he’s spent his whole life stuck under his father’s gaze, being forced to see hockey as this stressful competition where everyone else is out to get him. And through his relationship with Levy, not only is he able to find unconditional love and a family that accepts and cherishes him, but he’s also able to see the sport that’s been nothing but a source of pain and anxiety in a new light. He’s able to see it as what it really is; a game. And with this new perspective, he comes to see that there are more important things than being the best of the best. I just think that's a nice sentiment to leave off on.

“They lay together in the aftermath, two cooling bodies wrapped up in each other, their whole future a bright path in front of them.”

to say that i’m disappointed would be an understatement.

let’s start with the positives.

i always love how marina vivancos writes her characters. they always feel so real and authentic, giving them a quickly paced character development that always fits. it never feels fake or forced, showing how the author is aware of the natural pace the characters need to show. speaking of character development, i always appreciate how mv doesn’t force her characters to have sad backstories to make the readers feel. i love and appreciate it when an author does this naturally, showing their characters personality without forcing anything, as if us, the reader, needs to feel a certain way about the authors characters. to me, it shows a lack of creativity, originality, and open-mindedness. with vivancos, i can trust her characters to always feel original, vivid, and genuine. it also gives room for character development that also progresses in a clear way. nothing is demanded and unrefined, and the characters' voices are comprehensible without too much complicity added to show their history.

vivancos always demonstrates her ability in transparency, both with the characters and the plot. i love how diverse her stories settings always are, as well as her characters adding some representation. in addition to that, i sometimes like to read omegaverse for the different status roles the alphas, omegas, and betas have. here, alphas and omegas are divided by who they are, where alphas are regarded highly and omegas are looked down upon. this is common in this type of universe, and i’m always in awe of how common it is to modern times, despite one being fiction and the other being real life. i think it was also interesting how relevant it all is to the characters role. for example, how much more scary it is for alonso because he’s an omega, and how much easier it is for someone like levy because he’s an alpha. how much communication, socialization, and status is easier for levy but alonso has to hide who he is in fear of being rejected, humiliated, and thrown away. this is something i like to read about in omegaverse not only because of the connection it has to real life, but also because of the different perspective of the genders and social status.

adding on to that, i did really like the consent and gentle care between alonso and levy. levy’s protectiveness, reassurance, care, and respect towards alonso was lovely, sweet, and endearing. it was satisfying to see a shift in how most omegaverse books are. usually the characters are mates or they feel a different sort of connection, but between alonso and levy, they develop a camaraderie first, friendship second, relationship third. it was nice to see this set up because it showed how, despite the ruts, scents, and eagerness, alphas and omegas aren’t always expected to get together because of one certain encounter.

however, i must admit, that leads me to my problem with the story.

levy and alonso’s relationship felt too platonic for me to root for them. what starts off as a friends with benefits relationship turns into a relationship of a possible future full of love and want. yet, it was difficult to root for the two and see a future for them because of how underwhelming their relationship felt. the care levy had for alonso felt platonic; the sexual exchanges felt platonic; their feelings felt completely platonic. it felt like the romance came out of nowhere and, respectfully, abruptly. their relationship felt like one between buddies. i can see and understand how a friends with benefits/hooking up kind of relationship can lead to future feelings, but in this case, i saw levy as someone simply helping alonso prepare for his future mate. it also reminded me why the friends with benefits trope, in general, isn’t one i like or look for daily. i saw levy as someone offering alonso a hand with what he was going through (his heat). it was difficult to understand where their feelings came from because it was lacking chemistry and tension, as if the feelings were just thrown in.

i’ve mentioned before how i don’t like the tension between our main couple being thrown in just like that. i expect it to slowly build up, no matter where the two stand with each other at the moment. but with alonso and levy, everything felt two sided. there wasn’t any relationship development and the progress expected to show that was lacking in every area. it was difficult to pinpoint exact moments of lust, want, and need. even levy’s jealous and possessiveness wasn’t enough to fulfill the usual delight i get with these types of stories. even their opposite personalities and how different their attitudes were didn’t make up for the lack of emotional engagement.

overall, this was an unsatisfying read. it wasn’t really like anything i thought it would be, and that’s both good and bad. good because it gave a different angle on traditional omegaverse books, but bad because of the lack of chemistry, which led to a boring romance. however, this seems to be a series, and i couldn’t miss the hints of a potential rivals to lovers romance blooming between gabby and young!

♡ this was cute i guess, but also quite boring at times, and ultimately, forgettable.
♡ the mcs didn't have much chemistry, something was just off with their pairing for me. i sadly didn't particularly care about them as a couple or as individuals.
♡ i will probably still read the next book in the series, since i know that MV can do way better than this.

An omegaverse hockey romance. Now I’ve truly seen it all I think 😅

God, this was so much FUN! And hot and sweet and full of awesome hockey!! (Seriously, the hockey here was absolute FIRE! Super accurate, engaging and exhilarating. Loved it!!)

What an interesting set up: Hockey is an alpha’s sport (hahah painfully true irl) and while it’s not illegal to play in the NHL as an Omega, it’s still highly discriminated against. So our MC (and single POV), the prickly, jaded, grumpy, lonely Alonso goes through hell to suppress his Omega scent, his heats, his whole identity, to be able to live his dream and play professionally.

Until one pseudo-rut involving his utterly amazing, golden retriever sunshine of a team- and flatmate, Levy, exposes his secret. From that moment on, Levy is the only person who truly knows who Alonso is - and the only one Alonso fully trusts. Enough to let his guard down and, for the first time, explore what it might actually mean to have a friend - and be an Omega, in all the ways. 🔥

And the steam.. holy shit. I’m not normally into omegaverse and the sexual dynamics that come with it but goddamn did I enjoy everything about this here 😮‍💨 I wasn’t bored by a single one of the sex scenes - and that’s saying something!!!
And I couldn’t stop squealing and giddily kicking my legs at how tenderly Levy cared for Alonso during their rut and heat. The nesting, GAH, so CUTE!!

There were a few inconsistencies here and there but to me at least, those were easily overlooked.
My only real gripe is that ending. Everything was wrapped up SO quickly, my head was spinning. Will they appear in future books too? Will I get some sort of closure between Alonso and his dad? Will I see their HEA along the line?
I really kinda hated that tentative and open (and let’s be real, UNRESOLVED) HFN so why am I still tempted to give this one 5 stars??
Fuck it, it brought me all the tingles and reading joy and tbh that’s what I’m here for 😅

This was my first book by the author and I am HOOKED (does she always write this hot?? Can you rec other stuff by her?? IS THERE MORE NESTING IN THE NEXT BOOKS??? Because that was the cutest shit I’ve ever read 🥹)

i've only read Crybaby by this author previously, but now i'm wondering why i haven't checked out more of her work because my heart is once again feeling awfully warm & toasty right now 😌

in my heated rivalry review, i said (and i quote): "...the title which sprung up images of rival hockey players going into heat on the ice (clear evidence of my indulgent forays into the omegaverse but i’d fork over cold hard cash to read a book with this premise #somebodymakeithappen *winkwinknudgenudge* 😉)", and while the next book in this new series is hinted to fall more under this specific description, WE GOT OUR OMEGAVERSE HOCKEY BOOK Y’ALL!!!

Alonso is an Omega hiding under the guise of an Alpha in order to be afforded the same opportunities as his Alpha peers in the hockey world. shouldering this great secret capable of sabotaging his chances of playing in the big league isn’t the only reason he isolates himself from teammates, however. his father is uncompromisingly committed to brainwashing him with scathing words, degrading his performance on the ice and Omega designation that self-hatred becomes second nature. Alonso never feels enough no matter what his stats say and drowns in the fear of being rejected for who he really is.

but when circumstances lead to sharing an apartment with Levy—his direct competition to securing a permanent spot on the team—he attains what he never could've imagined in his wildest dreams: a confidant.

Levy is everybody's friend—charming, personable, and so tightly wrapped up in familial love and support that even Alonso begins to mourn what he never had. my chest was aching in the best of ways as Levy and his family took him under their wing and slowly peeled away Alonso's protective shell, because he desperately needed to be shown the toxicity of his father's ways and that he deserved to be treated, as well as treat himself, with more compassion.

one of my favorite things about an omegaverse read is Alpha-fueled possessiveness, and glued-to-Alonso's-side Levy didn't even have to know he had it in his golden heart to deliver on that front. throw in Alpha ruts and nesting, and you have steamy and wholesome, domestic moments in spades. some squealing may or may not have been involved in said scenes.

i did deduct a star because i wasn't fully satisfied with the HFN ending, but hopefully the open plot points will be wrapped up, and we get more than just brief glimpses of this couple in the future. very excited for more pairings to come to life (and eventually present a united front??), but in the meantime, please tell me Alonso gets a Pop-Tart sponsorship at the very least 😆

get ready to sink your teeth in this heartwarming, grumpy/sunshine, roommates-to-friends-to-lovers story on October 4th!

Thank you to GRR and the publisher for providing an advanced copy of the book. This is my honest review :)

Even better on the re-read 😭 this book owns my heart.

_____________________________

I'm obsessed. Totally, utterly obsessed with this story and if I could give "Fresh Ice" six stars, I would.

I can't think of an author who does omegaverse quite like Marina Vivancos: her stories are that absolutely fabulous mix of steamy, smutty ABO deliciousness and a heartfelt, and at times gut-wrenching, emotional rollercoaster. All of her stories read like a whack of feelings on the head and this one was no exception.

"Fresh Ice" contains all the usual, lovely omegaverse tropes (heat/rut, scenting, neediness and possessiveness, to name a few) AND hockey (ft. a grumpy/sunshine teammate pairing); AND, one of the top tier romance tropes known to mankind, AKA, The Secret Omega™; AND absolutely endearing leads that need to be protected at all costs. God, this author spoils us.

Alonso was a fantastic protagonist. He's stubborn and quiet and reserved and wound so tight in his struggle to survive, and to keep on playing hockey, and to please his dad, he doesn't realize that he's actually a powerhouse, and a person that totally deserves to be loved and cherished, regardless of his designation. Characters like Alonso are my absolute weakness, and I loved him to bits: I just wanted to see him happy and appreciated.
Levy was his perfect counterbalance: he's endlessly optimistic and cheerful, generous and lovable, and 100% ready to shower Alonso with his undivided attention and affection. They had great chemistry together, even before the lead up to their first explosive steamy moment, and the banter was seriously top-notch.
The steam was *sighs* god, very good. Very, very good and gah, I kind of want to do a re-read straight away.
I also absolutely adored the side characters: Levy's parents were total gems, their teammates seemed fabulous (and hopefully two certain rival captains will be getting their own shot a happiness sooner rather than later 👀)

I have the biggest book hangover at the moment, especially after *that* ending. I sincerely hope there's going to be a sequel, either about them (even though this novel is a solid HFN) or any other character, because I don't think I could cope without one.
The only way forward is to read a dozen more omegaverse novels, isn't? Oh well.

Thank you GRR for the ARC. I received it in exchange for an honest review.

nothing calmed him like Levy’s scent in their own home

I hope the author plans to continue with the series because the ending left a lot to be desired. And from what I assume will be the couple of the next book that also means this couple here will end up being only side characters. We didn’t really got to witness a HEA, only a HFN that was quite like how "Heated Rivalry" ended. So not nearly enough.

I liked the plot idea a lot. It felt pretty unique. And while I had absolutely no problems falling for the Alpha Levy and his caring ways I had a hard time warming up to the Omega Alonso. I felt where he was coming from but somehow it wasn’t enough to really get to like him or even connect to him.

What I really loved tho was all that happened during Alonso’s heat; the nesting, Levy taking care of him, it was really swoony. So yeah, actually, all my three stars for Levy.

“Honestly, it’d make me feel better. Calmer. I…I have this urge like I have to take care of you, and the idea of not having a nest is, I don’t know. Scary.

This book was perfect for me coz I just read
Daughter of Smoke & Bone
and was waiting for the second book to be delivered so I was looking for something sweat and swoony to pass the time.

Can we just agree that nesting is so freaking cute? I really loved the heat the nesting and Levy taking care of Alonso, it was really swoony.

I don't really know how I feel about Alonso he was kinda tough to love but I did really loved Levy that man is just so amazing.

I did not like this book, not at all. I've enjoyed Vivancos' other stories, but this one felt all wrong.

There was no tension, no relationship development, and Alonso was an extremely unsympathetic character, a coward through and through.

The ending is NOT a HEA by any stretch of the imagination. Alonso never heals and continues to lie for his dad's sake. Levy just goes along with it because ... um, I don't know why actually.

Also, I don't think this author understands hockey. Just sayin'.

I kind of hated this story, but one extra star because maybe it's me.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5
Format: ebook

I really enjoyed this. It was a quick and cute read.

I loved the premise of the story, of Alonso hiding being an Omega to stay in an Alpha-dominant sport. And Levy being the only one who knows.

There were a lot of sweet and soft moments, but the spice was also really hot. Levy being possessive was everything. And I adored how Levy’s family took in Alonso and gave him all the love he deserved.

My only complaints is that a lot of things felt unfinished. Alonso really never dealt with his dad and I wanted some kind of satisfying conclusion where he finally stood up to him. We also don’t know what’s going to happen with him and Levy because he’s still keeping his secret.

The last chapter had me absolutely gagged though. So excited to continue this series.

Omg I absolutely loved this book!
I knew I would enjoy the combo omegaverse sport romance.
What I loved:
- Alonso! Really liked his characterization and appreciated him as MC. I felt him so close to me in his having to strive to be sociable and in his need for solitude to recharge sometimes. Really wanted to hug him! I also loved that at the beginning of the story he does not realize the real toxicity of his relationship with his father, rather he feels guilty and at fault and anxious about it. I loved so much how instead over the course of the story he slowly blossoms through his own strength, Levy's support, and the team. And I loved how he becomes increasingly "brash" and confident, learning to ask for what he wants, even from a sexual standpoint. Also appreciated how Alonso supports and consoles Levy too, not just the opposite. And I liked that he really learns what it means to be part of a team, that he stops thinking as an individual and instead starts thinking as a team.
- Levy! He's a great character, too, and I really appreciated him. I liked how there is so much more behind his being outgoing and sociable, I loved his kindness, directness, empathy, and his way of getting straight to the point. Loved to death the gentle and tactful way he starts to support Alonso and make him feel more confident. I liked that he is also insecure at times, despite appearances, and I liked how he reacts to Alonso in these circumstances as well. Also enjoyed it when his more protective streak emerges toward the other!
- The relationship between Alonso and Levy! 😍 *swoon* Loved them so much together! Loved how they act as a tandem, both on and off the ice. I loved their banter and their constant back-and-forth! Loved how supportive they are of each other, how they care and are always there for each other. Plus, they are HOT together! 🔥 super hot! I enjoyed their erotic scenes a lot (in this regard, I also enjoyed seeing this time the rut of the Alpha too, not just the heat of the Omega).
- The ending! I loved how Alonso & Levy's story ends, I found it just right for them. Also appreciated how Alonso settles his stuff at the end. I would have liked just maybe one more word about his health, but it's just a minutia; I really liked the conclusion. But the EPILOGUE? And two certain characters? Omg please give me the next one NOW! 😍😏

Marina Vivancos fans, omegaverse fans, sport romance fans, omegaverse sport romance fans, plz read it, you’ll love it!

I received an Arc of this book from GRR, whom I thank, and this is my honest review.

Avrei tanto voluto abbracciarlo in alcuni momenti!

He couldn’t lie to himself tonight—couldn’t pretend the feel of sleeping in Levy’s arms wasn’t his biggest comfort.

Fresh Ice brings together two great sub-genres — Hockey Romance and omegaverse.
We get the thrill of hockey and the sweet & loving aspect of omegaverse.

The spice was hot and steamy, without being too OTT, as some omegaverse tend to be. It was spicy, but also very tender and loving.

Levy was exceptionally sweet and caring, and I didn’t expect any different from Marina Vivancos. Her relationships are always super lovely, her writing enthralling, her plots entertaining.
The ending did feel a little more HFN than an ever after, but hopefully we’ll get to see more of Levy and Alonso in the future.

I really enjoyed this first installment, and am definitely going to read the rest of this series.

Tropes and NSFW info (spoilers):

Like wow.

I am not gonna lie, this story would have been better with less hockey and a second POV but yall, it has a hidden omega, omega sounds, scenting (and I mean different scents, the alpha was putting out different scents when he got all alphally), nesting, ruts, heats, and a couple that I really was rooting for.

Alonso was born an omega to a father who abused him and a mother who allowed it to happen. He finally makes it to a pro hockey team and meets Levy, a sweet and lovely alpha who ends up being his roommate. Because of how Alonso was raised, he basically doesn't know how to act in real life. Levy helps him become free to be happy.

This ends on a HFN cause they are so young (Alonso is only 19) but there is a hockey surprise at the end that I am going to assume means that maybe there will be more books set in this world.

4.5 ⭐️ This was sweet and adorable and sexy! I loved it and I’m wondering if I read the same books as everyone else. 🤷‍♀️

The insecure hurting omega. The sweet caring (but still possessive) alpha.

“I’m not playing pretend here, Olive. I’m in this for real. You’re the most amazing person I’ve ever met, and I love you so much. I…I want to spend the rest of my life with you. And I know there’ll be difficulties, but I think this is worth it. Don’t you?”

Their friendship and relationship development. The sex scenes. OMG. Normally talk of slick grosses me out, but here it was fine. Better than fine. 🔥

And hockey! 🏒🏒🏒
What more do you want?

This was a fantastic read as expected!🤩 It was angsty with just the right amount of sweet and I was delighted to flip to the last page and realise that not only was the book over, I’d lost track of time entirely!

WHY I LIKED THIS
- Representation. Always good to see and even better when it’s well done.
- Spice. Some of the scenes were not as detailed as I wanted (Levy’s rut???????) but overall they were incredibly well-written with the first one being very🔥
- Not too much emphasis on hockey. Look, I could probably understand this game if I cared to look up the rules (or paid attention when reading the books that go for “realism” in the sports element) but I don’t read sports romances for the sports. What it’s really good for in my opinion is being the glue factor i.e. the background element that inevitably ropes in all the themes/tropes I love – found family, enemies to lovers, teamplay etc
- Minimum third act drama. There was a breakup but thankfully MV kept that shit short.

That being said, it’s been a while since I read ABO and I’m now fighting the age-old battle of sticking to my TBR *sigh*

Y.A.S. this is what I'm talking about!
I completely fell in love with this pairing. I felt for Alonso and the difficulties he went through, how he was trying to come out of his shell, and Levy was a steadfast presence throughout all of it without being perfect himself (um, jealousy anyone?)

What I also like--and I know not everybody will--is that there wasn't drama right before it ended. That always feels so artificial to me--this was just the story of two people falling in love and dealing with the difficulties their dynamics and society put them in. I BELIEVED the romance. I wanted more.

And the omegverse elements were great. NESTING!!! God, that touched my soul.
Again with this writer, not a very long book, but I just loved it as a little morsel. I'm looking forward to more of this series.

I've struggled to get into Omegaverse books before, there's only been one that I've enjoyed previously, but this was soooo good!!

I do wish it had been longer though and there'd been more resolution with the abusive dad, and the whole hiding being an Omega. I wanted to see these guys telling the whole world how they felt because they were just so adorable together!

Nesting is the most adorable shit I've come across in a long while. I'm going to have to hunt down every book with it. I read it and can't help giggling and kicking my feet.

I'm encountering a lot of green flag MCs lately. Levy is just....🥰🥰🥰🥰

I liked this one. I love that the Alonso doesn't have to be fixed before he finds love.

I did find the love declaration a bit underwhelming though. But I'm so pumped to read Gabby and Orion's story.

I can't believe I've been avoiding omegaverse for years. All this time, wasted. I could have been living the good life.

So WOW. This book was absolutely amazing!
I had no idea what to expect from a hockey romance in an alpha/omega world, but it was so fascinating! In this world, alphas are the powerful men on the ice while the omegas are the spouses cheering them on from the sidelines.
Except for Alonso. After years of being pushed by his dad to train harder and play better, he finally gets drafted. But he has to suppress being an omega to make his dreams come true. It takes work, and medication, and a lot of hiding, but he makes it work.
He meets fellow rookie Levy on day one, who is completely his opposite. Levy is an upbeat, charming, and sweet alpha who loves to chat up everyone. Alonso is quiet and keeps to himself, but sharing an apartment with Levy gets him out of his shell.
When they’re relationship turns physical, Alonso and Levy promise each other nothing will change. But neither of them bargained for how it would feel to be together, and they don’t want to se apart.
I loved watching Alonso grow into a more confident and relaxed man, while Levy definitely shows how kind he is. They are so sweet together…and 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

The writing was a bit choppy at times, but the story held through it all.

Omegaverse
Non-shifter
Hockey!!

What to hide in the locker room? Being an omega and not an alpha. Being an alpha attracted to other alphas.

What begins as friends with benefits turns into feels!
Abrupt ending with a too-quick resolution.
Still, I’m awaiting the next book in the series!

I got swept up in Levy and Alonso’s story as they lived together through their first official season in the league. They seem so different as an introvert and extrovert, omega and alpha, but they fit so well together and clearly have chemistry from the beginning. The level of trust developing helps their relationship, and I can’t think of a better person to get Alonso past some of the life trauma that has been deeply ingrained into him about his designation. Levy is a ray of light, and the idea that he’s willing to share some of that with Alonso to make his days a little a brighter? Perfection!

Honestly I lapped this up. Read the whole thing in 2 sittings. I love Marina Vivancos and Franky the ice hockey/Omegaverse crossover was something I didn’t even know I needed but now I’m gonna have to read the entire series.

Most of the book was a 4 star but I finished it with a giant smile on my face and the nesting alone deserves its own star. So fucking cute.

A very classic example of a hockey romance, but with an omegaverse twist. And that’s about it, honestly. I liked it though.

⭐️3.5⭐️

While I didn’t feel super attached to the characters in this book, I really liked the omegaverse world that MV created. The heats and ruts weren’t super sexualised like I’d read in other books (not that I hate that but this was just a nice change), there was a lot of caring evolved too and no need to find a partner to help them through it. I liked that it was more a consensual choice to be with someone during a heat/rut rather than a need for it.

I also really liked the HFN ending, I feel like too often the author tries to wrap up everything in a nice bow but this ending felt way more realistic. I’m definitely gonna read the next book and am really looking forward of it.

3.5 stars, rounded up for the nesting.

The relationship development and growth was great! Looking at this book from a purely vibes viewpoint; the teammates, to reluctant friends, to roommates, to fwbs, to lovers was done in a very natural way. Everything in their relationship flowed together very nicely, and the buildup was very sweet and cute. I loved the caretaking and pampering scenes, and loved that Alonso got to experience affection and intimacy from Levy and Levy's family. Watching him learn that he deserves friendship, love, and enjoyment was heartwarming.

HOWEVER, I'm not sure if I really enjoyed the hockey plot aspect of this (and please don't fact check me on anything hockey related in the story, I was lost at times), The hockey plot was clunkily chugging along in the background, and disrupted that relationship flow. The ending was right when things started to get interesting, and I needed 50 more pages of Alonso and Levy getting their shit together. It was cut too short for me, and did feel a bit lessened by setting up the next book in the series instead of solely focusing on this book's leads.

I read Vivancos for the vibes, which this brought. I also enjoyed the omegaverse aspect of the story. There's a secret omega, knotting, a little felching moment, scenting, NESTING (loved it), caretaking and doting, and some big emotions. Alonso has an unkind and emotionally abusive father, while Levy has a very caring and loving family, who aren't meddling and just kind & supportive! There's also a mini getaway to a cozy cabin in the woods, along with a very healing summer spent in northern Minnesota.

I'm torn, I liked a lot of aspects of this story, but also was left unsatisfied and wanting more exploration.
