With a temper fiery enough to warn off any soldier not to take what isn’t offered, Lara’s reputation as a wildcat is deadly. To add to her troubled life, which keeps most villagers at bay, she was born with the ability to foretell the death of her friends, enemies, and lovers.
When Lara’s arrested for assaulting a guard, she’s cast into servitude under Talon, the king’s captain. She’s foreseen meeting Talon for most of her life, and is now living her own private hell. Yet, as she gets to know him, she learns he’s a man of honor who fights for her. And the dreams in which he dies become a recurring nightmare.
Worse, she can’t imagine loving him for only a few weeks knowing she faces a lifetime of grief without him.
Michele James lives in a southern California beach town with her understanding husband, one mini panther, and two crazy cattle dogs. She's written the ancient world, fantasy romance Destined series and the early medieval, historical romance Foretold series. Her books are full of action, adventure, and steamy romance, with swoon worthy heroes and strong willed women. A retired veterinary technician, her stories are also guaranteed to have some medicinal lore and an animal side character or two.
I received a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.
I enjoyed this novel immensely. It tells the story of a young healer named Lara, who was raised by another healer named Sophie (although she is not her birth mother). There are a lot of secrets in Lara's past. Many that Sophie has purposefully kept hidden from her in order to protect her.
When Lara comes across a soldier in the woods, she takes his advances as offensive and cuts him with her knife, and runs off. Once she reaches her village, she finds this same soldier (named Talon) being stitched up by Sophie. Thus begins a very tumultuous yet passionate relationship between the two. Both are stubborn and confident and unwilling to yield to the other. Little do they know that their paths have been destined since they were very young and will need to stick together to face the dangers awaiting them in their futures.

I want to say thank you to the author, Michele James, for sending me a copy of this novel. It's brilliant and rich, and I devoured it pretty quickly. It reminded me of a Renaissance romance version of Outlander. It truly is an absolute treat.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Readability: 📖📖📖📖 Feels: 🦋🦋🦋 Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔💔 Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡⚡⚡ Romance: 💞💞💞💞 Sensuality: 💋💋💋 (I prefer my scenes a bit longer and more explicit, but there was an emotional level I really appreciated) Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑 (some were even lighter) Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥🔥 (There’s 3 scenes but 2 are on the shorter side so I settled at a 2 flame) Humor: A touch Perspective: Third person from both hero and heroine When mains are first on page together: Almost immediately (page 2) Cliffhanger: No, this ends with a happily ever after Epilogue: No Format: voluntarily read a copy from the author in e-book form (Descriptions found at end of my review)
Should I read in order? I believe this is a stand alone novel.
Basic plot: Lara has dreamed of Talon – but never of being his servant as punishment after she’s accusing of assaulting a guard.
Give this a try if you want: - Medieval time period - 778 - Gaul setting - tall heroine but taller hero (he’s taller than her by a full head) - scarred hero - hero has chest hair! - warrior hero/healing apprentice heroine - fated mates – this might be a stretch, but I feel it! - heroine nurses hero back to health - heroine disguised as a lad - lower to mid steam – there are 3 scenes but 2 are on the shorter side
Ages: - Heroine is 22, hero is 30
First line: Lara woke with a start as the faceless warrior grabbed for her hair, her heart pounding as hard and fast in her chest as the hoofbeat of his black charger echoed in her ears.
Endearments
My thoughts: I really enjoyed James’ writing style! This novel gave me some light spooky season vibes with the accused witchcraft and dreams and visions. I’d even go so far as to say fated mates, some parts just giving me light chills as I witnessed the inevitable pull they had towards each other. Nothing too extreme or paranormal, just a light touch that has you wondering about magic in the air between them.
I really fell into the beginning of this book. The writing was immersive. I was worried there wouldn’t be enough romance focus for me, but it was there. I loved the way Talon and Lara circle each other. Talon is very protective and he shows it multiple times. He’s a kind, good, and strong soldier and I really loved his character. Lara I loved. I felt like we got to know her character really well and I felt her love and pain throughout the story. The side characters and loyal pets made the story even more enjoyable and real.
I only wished a couple things had been a touch different. Regarding Talon and Lara’s kind of fated inevitability and Talon’s curse – I felt like there was such a build up for it and I was SO into it, but when they give into each other, for me, it felt like it was a bit out of nowhere. Like the buildup didn’t matter. There also was a longer action scene towards the very end of the book I could have done without. Maybe I was thinking the book was almost ready to be at the HEA after everything they went through and I wasn’t ready for more? Definitely purely personal preference, as I just don’t love lots of action and danger in my romance.
I would definitely try another by James in the future. This was my first by her and something about her writing really tugged on my heart.

Extra stuff like what my review breakdown means, where to find me, and book clubs
Full break down on what my ratings above mean here: Overall: How I felt about it everything considered! Readability: How ‘readable’ was the book? Did I fly through it? Did I have to tell myself to pick it back up repeatedly? Were any passages confusing? (I will probably score like (1) is literally unreadable due to formatting/typing errors, etc (2) There were lots of errors that made it difficult to read OR It was extremely confusing and I had to reread passages to make sense of it OR I disliked it so much I had to bribe myself to keep reading (3) I didn’t really want to keep reading and would have preferred to abandon the read and start something else OR some minor continuity issues/confusion (4) I liked it fine, maybe a minor error or 2. I was happy to pick it up when I had time. (5) I never wanted to put this down. I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it. I hid in the bathroom from my kids to read. I threw inappropriate food at my children for dinner so I could read instead.) Feels: Totally subjective to each person but did the book give me any tingles? Any butterflies? Did it rip my heart out (in a good way?) Emotional depth: How well do I feel I know the characters at the end? How much did I feel their emotions throughout the story? Sexual tension: Again, subjective, but how strong was the wanting and longing to me between the characters? A book might have strong sexual tension without a single touch. Romance: Was there romance? Did romantic things happen? This can be actions/words/thoughts of the characters and again is subjective. Sensuality: This is how the intimate scenes are written. Kisses and sexual scenes – how sensual were they? Were they on the mechanical side? Was there emotional pull tied in? Were the details explicit or flowery? These are subjective but generally (1) too short to get a good judgement (2) not all what I'm looking for - very vague or flowery prose (3) either not explicit enough or not enough emotional pull (too mechanical/physically descriptive without the emotions) (4) what I love in a scene (5) absolute perfection - perfect balance of emotional longing and explicit descriptions Sex Scene Length: How long the bedroom scenes are (generally (1) is 1-3 sentences (2) is a few paragraphs to a page-ish (3) is about average, a few pages (4) more well developed scenes, quite a few pages with descriptions (4) the majority of the book takes place in the bedroom. This is always hard to tell for me on audio! Steam Scale: Generally, each flame is a scene. If scenes are super close together I sometimes combine them. If a scene is super short or so vague I don’t know what’s happening, I don’t count it. There’s some levels of grey but generally the number of flames is how many sex scenes there are (I max out at 5 so I’ll put a + after if there’s more than that)
Warrior Mine is a historical romance but it is also so much more! There is adventure, suspense and even magic in this entertaining book.
It was easy to get lost in the world Michele James created. Our main character, Lara, is a strong, intelligent woman who doesn’t back down from anything. Her reputation is known. Some fear her because she is also known for her ability to foresee the future in her dreams. It was easy to get attached to Lara’s constant companion, Wolf, her most loyal dog.
Early on, Lara is arrested for assaulting a guard. She is then required to serve as servant to the king’s captain, Talon. Talon, it turns out, is the man who has been showing up repeatedly in Lara’s dreams.
What follows is a steamy romance full of adventure and magic!
I really enjoyed the story and found it for most part rather charming but had more darker things to it as well. Had some tropes common for the genre but was a good read.
One thing I've always been adamantly sure of (or so I thought) was that I just don't enjoy romance books. With all their purple prose and cookie-cutter plots and stereotypical characters, they've never been my thing. But Michele James is doing her very best to make me think maybe, just maybe, I might be wrong.
Warrior Mine is the second of Michele’s books that I've read, and she's winning me over with the incredibly rich details of both her worlds and characters. The scenes are set so vividly that it’s easy to lose yourself and imagine you are there. The women are independent and intelligent, and the men are gentle but strong. All the minor characters, both human and animal, are just as intriguing and vital to the story as the main characters, Lara and Talon. In fact, on that note, I really hope someday, Sophie the Sixth gets to tell her own story!
I’m so grateful to Michele for recommending I read this book. I really enjoyed it!
The story is great, and I enjoyed it very much. The grammar is splendid, and the vocabulary range is wide. Nevertheless, the story wasn't hard to follow. Even if there are unfamiliar words, readers can understand them based on contextual clues. The writing is very detailed, and I could picture every scene in my head as I read the book. I also liked how the author dropped hints of things to be revealed later along the way. It was fun picking up those clues and guessing what came next.
Lara and Captain Talon Guiscard are LOVELY. Simply lovely. I loved them together. The way he always had her back and protected her made me smile. The way they looked out for each other was just beautiful. Their struggles, fears and worries are so realistic, with prior experiences to back them up instead of having the characters have such problems for the sake of having them. It was amazing. Not only are the main characters, Lara and Talon, lovable but so are the side characters, such as Sophie, Phillipe and Patience, no matter how minor their roles are. Well-crafted characters truly make a story come to life!
In conclusion, this book has a great story, good grammar, a broad vocabulary range, detailed descriptions and wonderful characters. It's definitely worth a read!
Thank you Michele James for giving me the opportunity to read one of your books. I really enjoyed it.
Warrior Mine was a bit predictable for me, but otherwise, it was nicely written. Nothing was dragged out, & the descriptions used in the book were not overly done. This book will bring forth your imagination, & take you along on a reading journey you will not want to miss out on.
I received the epub from the author in exhange for an honest review, and I'm so glad I did!
The characters and the plot were great; and I felt like there was a very nice flow to the writing, very easy to get lost in this world the author built. Plus, Lara and Talon's story is such a sweet one, I kept waiting for more scenes of them together. Even when I wasn't reading, I was thinking of the story and what would happen next.
It reminded me of a book series I absolutely love: Outlander. If you're a fan of the series, you'll absolutely love this one! I highly recommend reading this book, it was so entertaining. I'm now curious to see what else the author has in store 💓
4.5-5 Stars! Wow! This was such a great book! It’s my first time reading anything by the author, Michele James, but it definitely won’t be the last! I was so interested in this book and the main characters, Lara & Talon, that I tried reading all night but had to stop since my 36 year old eyes aren’t what they used to be & I couldn’t make out any of the words after reading too long. But I would’ve kept on reading if I could see the words! That’s how good this book was. Every time I thought the book might be wrapping up, something new happened and the story went on. This happened a few times and I was getting worried that I might be invested in a cliffhanger, which I loathe! Thankfully, it did not have a cliffhanger, to which I am so thankful! I easily fell in love with the main and secondary characters. At times I felt like I was missing something but by the end of the book, that all got satisfactorily wrapped up. I don’t give 5 stars out willy nilly, so you know it’s an excellent book when I do hand it out! It’s got hot warriors, witches, a wolf, death, some goodbyes and hellos, fighting, slavery, more fighting, “sexy times”, an HEA ending and seriously, so much more! I do wish there was a prologue to explain some things first and an epilogue at the end to wrap it all up with a HEA ending for everyone and that the bad guys had talked more about the bad guy things they did to the main characters that we don’t know about. I was thoroughly entertained and I enjoyed every second of squinting I did while reading this book! This was a fabulous read and I highly recommend! *I received this at no charge & I voluntarily left this review.*
I am not typically a fan of historical books, but the plot sounded intriguing, so I decided to give it a try. I am so glad I decided to try it out because I devoured this! I was hooked from the beginning. The writing and story were great, and I really fell in love with Talon and Lara's story. We also love a wolf being a main character.
This encouraged me to get out of two of my 'book habits': 1. Judging a book by its cover (I typically avoid books with real people on the cover) 2. Sticking with my preferred genres
I only wish there had been more about Lara's magic and her dreams, which is why I ultimately gave it 4 stars. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in reading a historical romance with slow burn, some spice, and VERY likable characters. Looking forward to reading more by Michele James!
“Warrior Mine” by Michele James is a captivating medieval tale that follows the journey of Lara, an orphaned girl who finds solace and purpose under the guidance of Sophie, the village healer. As Sophie’s apprentice, Lara possessed a unique ability to dream about future events, which made her an outcast among the villagers and wary of becoming close to others, afraid she’d envision their death. Despite her compassionate nature, Lara’s temperament shone through when she fought off an attacker. However, her bravery led to her becoming Talon’s slave as punishment. What I loved about Lara was her incredible strength, although I understood her fear of loving someone who might leave her. I could feel the conflict of her love and pain throughout the story.
Talon Guiscard, a captain in the king’s army, was in charge of the post in Lara’s village and eventually set her free. Talon was a loyal, kind and patient man who is instantly attracted to Lara and playfully calls her his curse. However, as a soldier always on the move, he believes he cannot provide the stability and dedication that Lara deserves. What I loved about Talon was his honesty with Lara by not making her any promises or seducing her, giving her time and space to figure out her own mind. He kept his distance at times but his protective instinct towards her was steadfast.
The character development and world-building in this book were exceptional, and the light action and great banter added to the overall enjoyment. Interestingly, Lara dreams of Talon for 13 years before they met hinting at a fated mate’s dynamic, creating a sense of destiny that kept me eagerly turning the pages. The authors writing style immerses readers in the story, tugging at their emotions just enough to keep them invested. The push and pull of their interactions kept me hooked until the end. The witty and well-crafted side characters enhanced the story even more.
Overall, I enjoyed this story. It had just the right amount of action, romance, and emotional depth that I was looking for at the time. I particularly liked the author’s writing style, which struck the perfect balance of tugging my emotions without overwhelming me. This was the first book I’ve read by this author, but it certainly won’t be the last. I’m eager to dive into more of her work.
This is the third book by James I’ve read, and aspects I love in her other books shine in this one. The setting is well-drawn. I felt at home in the valleys and hills, in the castle keep and the yeoman cabins. The action scenes kept me engaged and guessing at how they’d conclude. And there are more than a few such scenes, as this is warrior romance (see title 😊). The horses and a very special canine enhance the action scenes and, as in James’ other books, are stars in their own right.
The main characters—protagonists and antagonists alike—are caught in webs of allegiances to family, friends, lieges, vassals, soldiers, and one another. They are likewise besieged by unresolved events. The imperatives of the past along with the responsibilities of the present force Talon, the male main character, and Lara, the female main character, to fight for personal survival just as they’re fighting for the love blossoming between them.
There are scenes of bloodshed, reminding us to be thankful we live in an era of plentiful antibiotics, and there are scenes of passion. Both are handled beautifully. The prose is unforgettable.
The first time he sees her, Lara slices Talon with her knife as a warning. He'll end up with more scars when the twisted justice of the local count makes Lara Talon's indentured servant. Talon is too honorable to seduce a woman under his protection, and Lara is too wild to be the property of any man. Of course they're perfect for each other!
I was enthralled by the passion, banter, and courage of these two and at what they had to struggle through and overcome. There's also a tender backstory between them, as well as a surprise about Lara's background that I was proud of myself for figuring out. Set in the Frankish realms during the time of Charlemagne, this book makes good use of its setting to add to the danger, and as someone who's read and loves The Song of Roland, I adored the small shout-out to that classic tale.
The writing is strong, the characters unforgettable--this book made me feel like I was reading classic Johanna Lindsey, something I never thought I'd have again. Thank you, Michele James!
I think I subconsciously read this slower than usual because I didn't want it to end 😭 I really enjoyed this book! It was a weird mix of both insta-love and slow burn but done in a really believable way. It's definitely not easy writing a book in this time period (700s I believe) but I loved MJ's writing style and thought it was so well done! I'm going to miss Talon and Lara!
This is the fifth book I’ve read by Michele James, and it may well be my favorite, though I say that at the end of all her books. It is an historical romance and so much more! The setting is Gaul, on the Pyrenees border Summer 778. Ms. James adds Geographic and historical facts that lend authenticity to Warrior Mine, as well as Latin, the common language that help bond the protagonists, Lara and Talon. The settings are rich with descriptions that tease all the senses making me feel as if I were there. The characters are very well developed on a continuum throughout the book engaging the reader as more layers are added to the main and secondary characters. I was engaged from the very first page and really liked how sections within chapters provide both main characters, Lara, a 23 year old maiden, and labeled “witch,” with startlingly accurate dreams of prophecy and knowledge of plants and herbs which provide healing and potions, including love potions, to the villagers of Crossroads Keep. She is strong and independent, and quite content to be unmarried, though considered an old maid who lives with her elderly Aunt Sophie, also a healer and considered a witch, as well. Her captor/protector is Captain Talon Guiscard, “…posted at Crossroad Keep, King Charles’ holding in the province and garrison to the Kate’s posting of soldiers.” The relationship of the Captain and Lara alternates as both combative and admiration, that slowly evolves to a deep and abiding love. The narrative includes Lara’s detainment for alleged attempted murder toward one of the soldiers, and revenge of the Count of Oloron, his son and daughter, who have a long standing hatred of Sophie and Lara’s family. There are plots and subplots that are so engaging that it is difficult to put Warrior Mine down! The ending will leave you wanting more, similar to Michele James’ Destined series that began as a stand alone novel, that through reader demand, multiplied as a four book saga. Romance is not my usual genre, but the historical aspect intrigued me, and the action, character development and rich descriptions drew me in and made it difficult to put down. I look forward to a sequel!

This historical romance had me in the first paragraph and kept me riveted until the last. And I’m pretty sure I just found my new book boyfriend.
When Lara, a fiery, spirited woman adept at the healing arts, gets arrested after justly assaulting a guard, she is forced into servitude to Talon, the man she has seen die in her dreams multiple times. Their tumultuous relationship has Lara constantly fighting for her freedom until it unexpectedly evolves into one of trust, protection, and sacrifice. As feelings for her master blossom, Lara must find a way to prevent Talon’s foreshadowed death since her dreams always come true.
This story is more than just a romance. It’s full of action, adventure, vengeance, and an ending you’ll never expect. The rich narrative is beautiful and captivating. The plot follows a steady pace, and the world-building is spectacular, well-researched, and historically accurate. The characters were well thought out, engaging, and realistic enough to leap off the pages. I especially enjoyed the push and pull between the two main characters, Lara and Talon, which added to the tension and passion, allowing it to build into a satisfying climax.
I recommend this beautifully told story to Outlander fans and people who love a good historical romance.
Thank you so much Michele for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review. I loved it!
I absolutely loved Lara, a strong and independent woman. And Talon? I need a man like him. They way he cares for her and protects her is so sweet. The are perfect for each other. I loved reading about them.
I also found that the side characters added a lot to the story and I really found some of them so likeable, like Phillipe, Sophie and Patience. Of course I must not forget about Wolf, always looking out for Lara and protecting her.
I really liked this book. It wasn’t just because of the romance and the characters that made me like this book. It is also because of the adventure, the action, the historical setting, and the pacing of this book that made me enjoy it.
I will definitely be reading more from Michele James. I’m a firm believer in books that have characters that you fall in love with, and this one has one of the best I’ve ever come across. Talon is an alpha male, to be sure, but his kind and generous nature are swoon worthy. Not only is he sought after, and for good reason, he has mountains of patience, which it takes to deal with the heroine of this story. Lara was a lot harder to get on board with, even though she had her reasons for acting the way she did. I wanted to jump into the pages and tell her to stop being so stubborn, so many times! Many of the support characters are also easy to adore, including the pet Wolf, who is one tough doggy. All in all, a wonderful read! Highly recommend.
The story is set in medieval France among a warrior band serving King Charles. The main character, Lara, knows the healing arts as taught to her by her guardian Sofia. She is a woman who can take care of herself, as Talon, the captain of the band soon finds out. The romance between the two unfolds amid a tale that encompasses adventure, duty and vengeance. Ms. James has a talent for world-building and each character rounds out the story that takes quite a few twists and turns along the way. If you love historical romance with lots of action and surprises, this is the story for you.
Warrior Mine by Michele James is an engaging fantasy romance with an intriguing supernatural twist. Lara is a strong and memorable character, especially with her ability to foresee death, which adds a constant sense of tension to the story.
I enjoyed how the relationship between Lara and Talon slowly develops despite the dark fate she believes awaits him. Their connection feels emotional and complicated, which keeps the story interesting.
Overall, it’s a compelling mix of fantasy, romance, and destiny that keeps you wondering whether fate can truly be changed.
From the first page, this book captured my attention, and I did not want to put it down. The main characters, Lara and Talon, are so richly written that you feel invested in their rollercoaster romance, and lives. It's so rewarding to read a historical romance with a strong, independent heroine. But the ancillary characters, including Wolf are also so charming that I could see a sequel, or pre-quel based on some of their stories- especially Sophie's intriguing back story. This is the first book I've read by Michele James, but now I will absolutely read all of her earlier works.
This was a great historical romance. I don't typically read historical romances from this time, so some words and vocabulary was definitely new for me but it did not take away from enjoying this book.
This story follows Lara, after she is arrested for assaulting a guard whilst defending herself, she ends up as a servant for Talon, the captain's guard.
Lara, however, had already foreseen meeting Talon. As she has a gift of seeing how others are going to die.
As she is forced to serve him to pay for the crime she is accused of she realized Talon is kind and starts falling in love with him.
I really enjoyed how their relationship slowly developed into romance from spending time with one another and getting to know each other's past. It didn't feel forced or rushed.
If you're in the mood for an old-time romance that's not overshadowed by spicy scenes this book is for you!
Adventure, romance, betrayal - this medieval story had everything to keep me sated from beginning to end.
Lara is a fiery, headstrong character whose talent for getting into difficult situations makes for a very enthralling plot. When she is pitted against Talon, the smoldering Captain of the Guard, the tension is palpable. They are both very easy to like, despite their flaws and tempers.
The story compellingly weaves their tempestuous relationship amongst a medieval world filled with jealous lords, fierce fighting and daily life in a keep. The world felt authentic and well-researched, and I had no trouble traveling back into my favourite time period.
As a fan of Elizabeth Chadwick and Diana Gabaldon, I love a story with strong women, handsome men ( alas fictional), and moments of steamy delight. This book did not disappoint and filled the gap.
The plot was kept fresh with moments of action alongside calmer scenes depicting everyday medieval life, and was filled with twists and turns right to the very end.
Overall, this was a really enjoyable read, a great historical fiction novel and was easy to get swept up into. I already have the second book and can’t wait to read it.
This was a lovely few hours of escape into a medieval world full of adventure and romance. Lara manages to be that rare kind of heroine that is spirited without crossing over into annoyingly perky, and genuinely likeable. The spark of instant attraction Lara and Talon have for each other that evolves into deep love is well written, and I particularly liked that their issues and conflicts were rooted in things that actually made sense rather than some vague misunderstandings that could be easily resolved if they would just talk to each other. The world creation in this book is wonderfully detailed; you get a very richly painted view of the Keep and village, sprinkled with little details of Lara's daily life as a healer. All the horses in the story have distinct personalities, which is quite cool, plus now I really want to taste one of Lara's pies! Wondering if Lara and Sophie the Sixth's prophetic dreams would keep coming true added a mystery element to the story that kept me turning the pages. One of my favorite works by this author so far, and I hope there are more in this setting.
I will start by saying that usually a pure romance book is not my thing but this one really caught my attention. It was really fast paced and I liked that there were still some action in the book.
The writing is vrey immersive which helps to really suck you in to the story from the start. Even if I would recommend this book I still want to make any potential readers aware of some trigger warnings (as always) and this book has triggers such as: •Attempt to SA •Colonialism/war •Childbirth death •Misogony from some characters •Death on page
This book was so good! I loved the spark between Lara and Talon from the get-go, but I also enjoyed so many of the side characters. Sophie, Phillippe. Though, if I'm being honest, Wolf stole the show for me. The story was fast paced, kept the action coming page after page, and made the read unputdown-able. I can't wait to see what James puts out next!
Though I adored Lara and all of the powerful energy she brought to the story, Talon is my favorite kind of hero. Ruggedly handsome, strong, brave, and fiercely devoted to his lady love. Couldn’t put it down and was sad when it ended. Michele has a way of writing men that I fall in love with every time. Talon is my favorite of them all!
This story was a step away from my usual contemporary reads. I was inthralled from the very beginning. The characters were rich, the story was suspenseful and kept me wanting more. The love story between Talon and Lara grew just at the right rate. What’s not to love?
