You have never been a boy. You have always been a man without a face. Until he disappeared Peter Black was Azrael. Master assassin. Now he spends his days hiding on a remote farm in northern Alaska. The same farm he was sent to at age eleven to be trained by the CIA. Peter only ever wanted a normal life and to be left alone. But the world refuses to leave men like Peter Black alone. An enemy like no other is coming. An enemy that has no mercy. No compassion. Only sheer ruthlessness of will. Forced to become Azrael once again, Peter must use every skill in his repertoire. Otherwise the people he cares about most are going to get hurt.

I am quitting at one third way through... already too much rehash of Peter Black 1, too much ugly child abuse, too much switching between then and now as well as there and here ( Russia and USA). I liked Archer with Blake Banner.
After reading book #1, I was anxious to read #2. A lot of flashbacks to years earlier between current chapters. I just couldn't stay focused or maintain an interest. In hundreds of books I've read, I'd not had this happen. Could just be me, but I gave up and went on to something else.
At times in the middle of this book, I seriously contemplated a DNF. The story skips from one time to another constantly, and uses multiple major PoV characters. I found it very difficult to either follow or engage with the story. Given the response I had to the first book in the series, I found that very disappointing.
But I persevered and the ending had much better focus and flow than the early part of the book. After finishing, I'm not unhappy about the time I spent, but if this had been the first book in the series, I probably wouldn't have continued.
I'll be reading the next book in hopes that it satisfies me as much as book 1, but this series is rather on probation for me now.
Wonderful book, loved it. I read the first in the series The Burden of the Assassin which was beyond outstanding. This second book told more of Peter Black's story along with his young son. The ending was a cliff hanger so am more than anxious for book three to arrive. The writing was so good, the story moved along with one thing after another happening to the pair and their only family. Some parts sad and some just plain exciting. Interesting stories about the others in the story and their lives and how things intertwined. I didn't like reading about animals being killed, that is my only negative comment. High praises for this book and highly recommend.
This story is inventive and unique and often heart breaking. I can imagine these types of training exist but I would rather think of them as the writers invention because of living with such lack of warmth. Nevertheless the story held your attention and was compelling as it took the reader to a place you will only experience in your imagination and the character development was exceptonal.
Believe it or not, there are moments of humanity even in an assassins life. How nice that Peter embraces his son and his son insists on a loyalty to the only real mother-son relationship Peter has had. It is very kind in this dark world. I’m also excited about this new character that was introduced. I’m looking forward to seeing her in future books. I guess I’ll have to read on to find what happens to Michael.
Stories well spun! Very J. B.! However, James took the time to shower, put on warm clothing, drink martinis, make love…Peter has none of that…well…once! And another thing, NO MORE KILLING DEFENSELESS ANIMALS! Stick to murdering inhumane humans. What happened to the deer? Such a waste! BTW…it’s Johns Hopkins.
Peter is back with Mother and Magda, with a new trainee in the game. But, there are black clouds on the horizon, a face from the past is after Mother. Reason unknown, but the killer needs to take her back to Russia, alive. Won is a friend? Who is a traitor? Peter battles many antagonists, but who is Michael? ENJO!
Excellent 2nd chapter to Peter's story. All the way how it started and right at the end when he gives his son a choice a regular life or assassin. The closeur of the Mother, Magda saga also was excellent. Especially the details of how Tommy became the assassin called the Hunter. Just an excellent follow-up!!! 10 stars plus!!!!! Thanks, Carl Clause
I usually stop reading if a dog is killed. And then give a 1 star review. There's never any justification of it. But I pressed on and finished reading. If u get past the reason for the death of an innocent animal, you'll find a very good story. Good chance though, that this we'll be the last I'll read by this author.
Yowza what a thriller ride this story is. This was just just action and excitement throughout the book. Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Definitely one of my most favorite books in awhile. I highly recommend not only this book but the one before this. I know myself I am moving on to book 3.
This is an ingenious tell of a father and son getting to know ach other. Its a lesson on how to not lives life. It tells of the pain the fathers has dealt with and how it effects everything. It a tell of how to be a good killer too. So enjoy the story. You'll never guess this one at every turn of the page.I'm
This one was fast and well paced. Good action, bit over the top but the writing lets you just go with it. I Like the characters and they flesh out well. Dialogue is easy and basic, without wasted word or filling. Just good simple fun action!
talk about grim...! and captivating. and commanding...! and anything but cozy...! complete. compelling. complex. and a heartbreaking but horrific story about the very unwholesome training too many assassins find themselves forced to survive if Mother Russia is to spawn her worst. and Uncle Sam is to steal her fledglings.
Once again, a superb addition to a heartbreaking and totally addictive series. A question to ponder, if all you have ever known is learning how to kill to survive and a rigid set of rules to form the "rules of life", is it ever possible to become a normal human being and walk away? Can a person's soul survive that?
Archer and Vogel twist a tale that brings you to the edge of your seat with a deep horrifying story line and sub plots that have you thinking back constantly for help! Great tale!
I did enjoy this book, but the arc for a great story just want there. A huge plot twist at the end that I didn’t really see coming, but had little to no effect on the story. I hope we see more of the surviving characters in the next book!
This is a hard book to put down. The action starts immediately and never stops! The life of a paid assassin is faced with a lot of tough decisions and in this book there are many.
The second offering in the Peter Black series is phenomenal! Los of twists and turns and a great twist at the end. Full story of action and intrigue that leaves you breathless! Can’t wait for book 3!
This was another intense and exciting read. Although I have given 5 stars I did feel that there were too many switches to different points of view. That being said it was a cracking story involving graphic details of the assassins life. A story of love and betrayal and survival.
A lot of jumping around between characters and time. Evil, revenge seeking assassins and collateral damage that is a bit too much. In the end, the hero doesn’t save the people He wants to save. Lots of blow by blow action.
Did you watch The Accountant and wish you could find books as gripping? The Man Without a Face is just such a one. The action is fast moving, not so coincidental as to lack believably, but with twists and turns to keep surprising throughout. In total, an excellent read.
This was an excellent book! Plenty of surprises you did not see coming! But be forewarned, don’t read if you’re tired as the plot switches a lot from scene to scene. If you like fast paced books this is a “gotta read” book!
The story was filled with many conflicting themes which lead to a surprising ending, which still holds unresolved questions. Which roads will the main characters take.
The thriller was just that and more. Exciting with plot twists throughout. Although the ending was expected, it still held your attention. Thank you for another seller book and look forward to reading the final book of the trilligy.
The plot sometimes does get cumbersome but the twists and turns are worth it! I sure had moments of "Wowwzaa!" A book worth reading for all who love thrill and adventure.
This is the second book in the Peter Black series and the authors do a good job with it. They lay out a good and exciting story in this book, and it is worth a read.
