In her senior year of high school, Celia has only one goal in to go to college and one day make the money that her family never had. Without any other resources, she needs to win a scholarship that rewards the best academic record in her school. Unfortunately, Harper Harris, the star player on the girl's basketball team, is also after the same scholarship, even though she doesn't need it. Things get complicated when the science teacher pairs them up for a project. It doesn't help that Celia has been dreaming about Harper every night for the past three years or that Harper is dating the high school bad boy. Too many complications when all Celia wants is to go to college.
This is the first time I went for the book and did not read any reviews or checked ratings, just the summary. So often I dismiss a potential read, just because some little thing do not particularly match my expectations. So recently I made a promise I would be more openminded. If I only considered this book, the task would fail miserably. So…no. No, no, no. There is nothing… nothing that would make me recommend this book for anyone to read it. There are comments about the book, I read after I read it, mentioning Wattpad. I admit I never read anything on Wattpad, but almost every fanfiction I’ve ever stumbled on (and I read a lot of it) is better than this story. I’m genuinely really sorry for feeling this way. The author obviously tried to create a lively story, to tell us something….anything. It didn’t reach me, though. It didn’t reach me at all. The sentences are plain and simple. No showing, just telling. The characters are one layered. Every kiss or attempt to kiss is like telling the avatars in Sims games to kiss. No emotion. Just…now kiss.. we kissed. Duh… nothing. And it's same with any other interaction. Maybe I am incredibly cruel by saying this, but I cannot imagine how those plain description of events could make anyone to feel anything. And isn’t it the reason why we read books? To experience various feelings or to remind ourself of those, without actually being there, doing that? I praise the author for trying to tell an interesting story. Unfortunately, I still can find anything interesting about this one. It’s nothing. Totally nothing. The book is like reading Telephone directory. Or maybe even worse. Because if you read a telephone directory and find an entry with pizza delivery, you at least feel excited. It pains me to say this but I felt nothing like that while reading this story.
Simplemente no existe.
The setup for this story follows a common theme. The main character is a socially outcast nerd with a crush on the star women's basketball player who appears to be straight. The two jump into a clandestine relationship rather quickly with very little preamble. From that point the plot segues directly into the melodramatic. There are several, unpunished, acts of violence towards one of the women. There is rampant bullying. There is cheating on tests condoned by the school principal. There is sanctioned steroid and beta-blocker use by high-school athletes. By the conclusion the women have survived and are together, but it is difficult to feel positive about their prospects.
The story itself was cute enough. Character development and relationship development were lacking overall. But for a short little read, it wasn't the worst I've ever read. Some of the wording was a bit awkward. However, I noticed the author has several books in a language other than English, so the wording may be due to translation from another language or perhaps English not being her first language.
