Jodi As a young girl, Jodi Daniels has just one silver lining to her turbulent relationship with her mother – her best friend and secret crush, Ryan James. Until her cousin Kimberly drives a wedge between Ryan and Jodi. Jodi is shattered when Ryan has to move to New York, and tries to mend their broken bond by staying in touch as Kimberly. Ryan Outwardly, Ryan seems to lead the perfect life – rich parents and great looks. Only Jodi has ever known the real upheaval of his life, always being the shining star on his bleak days. But it’s Kimberly who keeps in contact with him when he is in New York. As the years pass he becomes a strikingly handsome hotshot lawyer, and makes the decision to come back home to claim the woman behind the emails – Kimberly surely? Will Ryan and Jodi’s motto, “My heart and soul will recognise you the instant I see you,” prove to be true or will Jodi turn out to be Ryan’s dearest deception?
It was a long process, but I eventually completed this book. I would have dnf-ed it had it not been my friend's recommendation. We both have similar opinions - being as we despised it.
The book contains multiple plots, one of which being that the male love interest is angry with the female protagonist as she writes letters to him in London under the pretense of being her cousin. Jodi is written as a "tomboy" but at times comes across as immature when she expresses her disdain for clothes and "girly" endeavors. It's overbearing. The first plot is widely based on a well known Bollywood movie, from specific lines to the whole premise. The author overuses metaphors and clichés as well as adjectives to describe any new source. Many fights and conflict transpires but is brushed over and everyone loves each other in the next paragraph. Jodi and Ryan love each other - yet never fail to use every metaphor and cliché on EVERY page to describe how their relationship is all-consuming and they can't be without each other, it's a missing piece. I did not find Ryan attractive in the elevator when he takes advantage of Jodi's vulnerable state on the verge of a panic attack - there are other, less intrusive ways to comfort someone. Ryan brushed over Jimmy being persistent with Jodi due to his sexuality and because he's not a threat?
The several other plots (Nicole and Ryan, Her dad's demise, her parents not being biological and her agreeing to marry Brandon) are unnecessary and were a blatant yet unsuccessful attempt at a third act conflict. Ryan does not grovel and she simply ignores the grievances due to their excessive "physical attraction". The book could have been shortened by 40%.
Every character was insufferable, severely flawed and infuriating.
The only line I remotely liked(being an exaggeration) throughout the book : "The last time I checked, Dr Phil was in America".
Ryan was forced down our throats, being represented as a lovable, desirable male protagonist which was futile, given his uncoordinated behavior.
