Danger. Deception. Desire.

Award-winning suspense author Leslie Marshman is (finally) putting her psychology degree to good use, getting inside the heads of her characters and figuring out what makes them tick. She writes novels that feature kick-ass heroines, the heroes who love them, and the bad guys who fear them.

Leslie called Denver home until she married a Texan without reading the fine print. Now she lives halfway between Houston and Galveston and has learned to embrace the humidity. Her household includes two miniature poodles named Harley and Davidson, and a three-legged box turtle named Stumpy.

If she’s not at her computer making things up, you’ll probably find her camping at a lake, a fishing pole in one hand and a book in the other.

Wow, Ms. Marshman hits you right on page one with the action, twists, and turns and doesn't stop until the very last page. If you love a good WITSEC book, then you will love Scent Detection.

Marie is a guarded woman. She'd been in Jasper, Idaho, for five years but kept to herself other than her friends at the DCA, her veterinary practice, and her surrogate grandmother, Dotty. They were all colorful characters who love Marie and want what's best for her. They suspect there's a good reason why she is the way she is, but they don't push her to reveal her secrets, which is good because she can't. She's living a life of solitude out of necessity for doing the right thing when she unknowingly got involved with a very evil man.

Jack. That's it, just Jack. He doesn't know his last name because his truck crashed, and he went flying, leaving him with retrograde amnesia. What does he remember? The woman who saved him was familiar, but he didn't know why. His gut told him he'd better stay in Jasper to find out why. He takes a job at the DCA, which kept him near Marie, and he wasn't complaining.

Astrid. Who doesn't love a dog with an attitude and intense dedication to its owner? I loved that Astrid went nearly everywhere with Marie and did everything she could to keep Marie safe. It was nice to read a K-9 book where the dog wasn't just 'in' the book but an important secondary character in their own right. Ms. Marshman did an excellent job with a character who couldn't speak but certainly made her presence known.

The action in Scent Detection was nonstop, whether they were saving puppies, Dotty, or their own lives. This is the first book I've read in this series, and it was easy to read as a stand-alone, so if you haven't read the rest of the K-9s on patrol, you won't be lost. The love story was woven through the pages in a way that felt natural and not forced. Even when they were both faced with situations beyond their control, they looked to each other for support. Congratulations, Ms. Marshman, on a well-written, fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat novel that delivers everything you expect from a Harlequin Intrigue!

I was gripped to the characters and the story within the first few pages. Really good character building that being said is why it's a five star read. Marie is a veterinarian in a very small town little does the town know she's been in witness protection for five years. While running one evening she rescues a stray of the human variety. Jack wakes up and can't remember anything, in the following weeks he gets bits and pieces. Marie has an adopted grandma named Dolly who is a trip. While watching the news one evening she finds out she's not as safe as she was because the person she testified against has escaped prison. This story is edge of your seat reading and the author keeps you there till the end.

Scent Detection was such a great story from the start I picked it up and could not put it down! Marie is a veterinarian who has been in witness protection for five years! Always keeping to herself because she is afraid someone will find out about her past! Marie and her K-9 Astrid are out for a run when Astrid starts to sniff the air and they find a man in a ditch Jack has had an accident and has amnesia but when he starts to remember Marie she is afraid he has been sent from her past to kill her! This is such a great story I picked it up and didn't want to stop reading it until I got to the end! If you haven't read you should you won't be disappointed!

I just finished this book. It was terrific! Once I started I couldn't put it down. I loved the chemistry between Marie and Jack even when they are clouded in so much mystery. And Dolly was a hoot! The drama of the ending was awesome. You're gonna love it.

Leslie Marshman’s Scent Detection is an exhilarating and exciting romantic suspense tale of danger, passion and secrets that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

After her last relationship had almost got her killed, Marie Beaumont had been left with no other choice but to leave everything that was familiar to her behind and go into Witness Protection where she had been given a new name and identity. For the past five years, she had managed to build a new life for herself in the small town of Jasper, Idaho. Although Marie continues to look over her shoulder, her life in Jasper has given her a slight semblance of normality and she has thus far avoided detection, but that could be set to change when she stumbles upon a handsome stranger with amnesia who has no recollection of his past – but who seems to remember that she used to have blonde hair! Just who is this stranger called Jack? Could he be connected to her ex? And is Marie’s life in Jasper about to come to a sudden end?

Jack cannot remember a single thing about his life prior to waking up in a hospital bed in Jasper, Idaho. Yet, the second he claps eyes on Marie, he is immediately disturbed by a jolt of recognition that tells him that he had met her before. But was he a friend or foe to Marie? Could Marie help him piece together the fractured pieces of his past? Or will the return of Jack’s memory end up placing them both in danger?

Marie intends to stay from Jack. She cannot risk him discovering the truth about who she really is. However, that proves far easier said than done as Jack has awakened feelings deep within her which she had thought long buried and the man she should stay away from, soon becomes the one she simply cannot and will not resist. As Marie and Jack begin to get closer and closer, they begin to wonder whether they might stop being held hostage by their pasts and take a chance on a future together. But with a dangerous enemy lurking in the shadows, they must work together to defeat a common adversary before embarking on the most daring adventure of all: everlasting love…

Fans of nail-biting romantic suspense will not want to miss Leslie Marshman’s Scent Detection. Fast-paced, tension-filled and heart-stopping, Scent Detection is a captivating page-turner full of shocking twists and turns that will keep readers entertained from start to finish.

Leslie Marshman knows how to write a deftly plotted, cleverly constructed and highly enjoyable romantic suspense novel that keeps readers hooked and Scent Detection is an excellent example of her storytelling prowess.

Full of humor, heat, jeopardy and desire, Scent Detection is the unmissable romantic suspense novel from fast-rising star Leslie Marshman.

Action packed excitement!

Marie was jogging after a storm with her trained dog Astrid when Astrid finds an unconscious man lying in a ditch. Jack cannot remember who he is, but feels like he should be here in Jasper. Marie has reasons to be suspicious of anyone, but for some reason Jack gets her attention. Soon a violent escaped prisoner is loose and heading West and towards Jasper. Is he coming for Marie or Jack? Can they stay safe?

The pace is breakneck and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with an action and character oriented storyline that has some mildly steamy and with no excessive detail. The characters are vibrant and engaging, including Astrid. I like how all of this is handled in the series. You don't have to read the other books in this series, but you will get much more out of it if you read them all in order! If you like a ton of action with plenty of great characters and superb dogs, then this is for you! Enjoy!

An errant storm blows more than broken tree limbs into the path of veterinarian Marie Beaumont, a quiet, keep-to-herself resident of the small town of Jasper, Idaho. While out jogging the morning after the storm with her constant companion, Astrid, a Doberman guard dog, the two come across a stranger lying unconscious on the side of the road.

The man is without a vehicle, or a shred of identification save for an inscribed watch with the name Jack. Marie instinctively works to save the handsome stranger, ignoring how his look, his lightest touch fans long dormant embers until Marie burns inside. Why? Because Marie fears his inexplicable appearance might mean danger for her.

There is a reason Marie is standoffish and travels everywhere with Astrid. Both are in Witness Protection. So, despite the attraction she feels for the stranger, his incongruent arrival fires off alarms bells. When the stranger, who claims to have amnesia, remembers that in her past life Marie used to be a blonde, she must use her wiles to get him out of town. And fast. Especially when the US Marshall assigned to her case is suddenly AWOL and the man who vowed to kill her escapes from prison.

There are simply too many coincidences for Marie to ignore, and while the stranger recovers from his injuries what transpires is a back and forth between Marie’s head and her heart confounded by the mysterious and sometimes dangerous happenings that begin with the stranger’s arrival.

How did the stranger come to be in the middle of nowhere, Idaho without a car? Why does he refuse to leave the small town despite being given an opportunity to cure his amnesia in a state-of-the-art facility in Boise? Is there a connection between the stranger and the man who swore to kill her, a psychopath who coincidentally escaped from prison at the same time the stranger showed up in Jasper? And where is Marie's case officer? Could he possibly be involved in all this?

Scent Detection is book 5 in the series, and Leslie Marshman uses compelling characters, intriguing plot twists, and the co-dependance and affection humans have with their animals, especially one as savvy as Astrid. The burning question is will Marie be able to set aside her growing feelings for the stranger and find the answers before she pays the ultimate price?

Bella storia, anche se ho capito subito chi fosse in realtà il protagonista. Comunque sia, il libro si lascia leggere con facilità. Non conoscevo questa autrice, devo vedere cosa altro ha scritto.

Leslie hits a homerun!

I've read all of your books. I've loved the characters and the story in everyone including this book. The action and the lead up in several relationships in the story are exciting all the way to the end of the book. Would like to see a continuing saga of Jack and Megan. I do look forward to other future books by Ms. Marshman in her Resolute Series. Now I need to look for my sloth leggings.

Classic Romantic Suspense
Marie’s in witness protection earning a living with her veterinary skills. When she finds an accident victim, she’s not sure if it’s good or bad he currently has amnesia from his concussion. What if Jack’s been sent by the criminal in her past?
Small town Idaho shines in this fast-paced adventure. A nice blend of human and animal characters populate the pages. I’m likely to check out others in this series.

This book is full of action, twists and turns to keep you reading.Marie is very guarded because of her past. Her friends are so supportive, they know there is more to her story but do not pressure her. I loved Astrid, she is so well trained and would do anything to keep her owner safe. I enjoyed how she trusted Jack, and how that added to the mystery surrounding him.
Jack is intriguing, he insisted on staying in town and not getting help offered, because his gut said he needed to be there. I thought I knew who he really was early on but needed everything to fall into place to know for sure. His experience is well written and I love when everything comes together for him.

My favorite moment was when Jack and Marie worked together to help the puppies. Their relationship was natural and sweet. I felt so bad for Marie. She wanted a chance at happiness, but knew she had to keep her secret. However, the ensign is so sweet, you have to read it. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like mysteries with romance and a bit of action. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily. This was a well written mystery with plenty of suspense, action and intrigue. I love any kind of books with dogs in them, and Astrid was quite the fun dog. Marie has been living life on the edge without being able to be her true self to anyone for quite some time. She is in WITSEC, and the only thing that has kept her going is her job as a veterinarian and working with her friends at DCA. She has also "adopted" an elderly lady at the local nursing home, Dotty. Dotty became fast friends with Marie when she provided her with a cat with an attitude just like Dotty. Dotty is a very fun character! When Marie finds a man in a ditch and saves his life, imagine her surprise when he opens his eyes up and asks, "Didn't you used to be blonde?" She is scared. Has her cover been blown? This man wakes up with amnesia, but he feels that protective "instinct" for Marie, and Marie is guarded around him. She is not quite sure how to feel about him. There was a wonderful romance that was a slow start, but enjoyable to follow. This book was non-stop action and the plot was very well written to pull the reader into the story with the characters. The characters were very likable and easy to get to know. This is a great series based on K-9's that are trained by the DCA. The books have overlap of characters, but you do not have to read the others, as each book can stand alone. Bravo to Leslie Marshman for this book! I look forward to seeing more suspense and intrigue from her pen!

Romance with a heavy dash of danger

A small town veterinarian with a secret. A handsome man with amnesia who wants to rescue her. A past that comes back with a vengeance.

What’s not to love?

Ms. Marshman hits it out of the park once again with a canine-centric romantic suspense. The spicy push and pull of the romance is the perfect blend to the danger crafted into each page. If you love a can’t-put-it-down, small town romance with a heavy dash of secrets and danger, you’ll love Ms. Marshman’s Scent Detection!

This story pulled me in from the suspenseful beginning to the mystery of how Jack knows Marie. Since Marie is in WITSEC, her life could be dependent on whether Jack is a threat to her. The fact that her K-9, Astrid, isn't sending out any warning signals eases her mind a little. And then there is the mystery of who Jack is and why he was in the area. When he starts having flashbacks, it just increases the mystery rather than answering questions.

I loved the pacing of the story, the community that Marie has around her (even though she tries to keep people at a distance due to being in witness protection), the side characters, and the romance between Marie and Jack.

Another great story by Ms. Marshman, and it involves a K-9. I loved this story involving witness protection, amnesia, and great animals. I felt like it portrayed what I would think WITSEC would be like. I laughed (sometimes out loud) and I cried. I especially laughed at the mention of Ms. Marshman’s book Resolute Justice as part of this book. Very clever. My heart was full by the end of the story. I stayed up to finish it when I should have been sleeping, but I needed to know how it ended. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book from the author. I bought a copy to go with the other books I have in the K-9 series. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Repost of my original review at Amazon.com.

Scent Detection is the second of Leslie Marshman’s contribution to the multi-author K-9’s on Patrol series, though it reads well as a stand-alone story.
The story is set in small town Jasper, Idaho, where we find veterinarian Marie Beaumont, a woman who is excellent at her job but cautious with strangers. Naturally this makes Jack, a stranger whose life she saved and who is suffering from amnesia, a perfect match for her. There is plenty of tension between these two as they grow to care for each other. With Astrid, Marie’s dog, and Dotty, her adopted grandmother, both liking Jack on sight, Marie is forced to face her fears. Throw in increasingly dangerous circumstances for Marie and you have a real page-turner. I zipped through this story and loved it.

An amazing fast-paced romantic suspense.

Marie has been living in witness protection for five years when her past finally catches up with her.
The terrorist she testified against has escaped prison. At the same time, a stranger, known as Jack, shows up in town. Because of an accident, Jack has amnesia. Marie is torn between wanting to help him, but also fearing he might work for the man she is hiding from. But Marie is also fighting feelings of love for Jack too. Until Jack’s true identity is revealed, Marie refuses let her guard down and Jack is left even more confused.

This is one of those books that you will want to set aside a good chunk of time to read. You are not going to want to put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It’s one of the best romantic suspense books I have read in a while.

This was a gripping tale that kept me hooked from start to finish. The book opens with a man driving his truck through a storm faster than was prudent in that weather. Unsurprisingly, he hydroplanes and leaves the road, his truck rolling over and over. He struggles to escape and nearly gets caught in a mudslide, all while his mind yells at him that there is danger. He almost makes it back to the road before he collapses.

The next morning Marie and her dog Astrid are out for a run. Marie thinks about her life for the past five years, far away from the trouble that put her in witness protection. While she never stops looking over her shoulder, she has made a few friends, even though they don't know everything about her. Marie is stunned when Astrid finds an unconscious man who is moments away from drowning in a drainage ditch.

The man, known only as Jack, suffers from amnesia thanks to his injuries. He remembers nothing about his life, from who he is to why he was on that road. The only thing he has going for him is his gut feeling that he is supposed to be in Jasper and that it has something to do with Marie. She is horrified when he comments on her hair, fearing that he is there because of her. She's relieved when the doctor plans to send him to a city hospital where he can get better help.

Marie is determined to stay away from Jack until he leaves. But fate, and Jack, have other plans. Jack refuses to leave Jasper, believing that the answers to his past are linked to the town and Marie. She is deeply suspicious of him and his sudden appearance. Jack takes a job at the canine academy, which keeps him in Marie's orbit. She spends a lot of time there as a veterinarian, and exposure to Jack leaves her torn. Something about him stirs up feelings she's buried for years, but prudence tells her to keep him at a distance.

Jack recognizes that Marie is skittish and suspects that she's hiding something. He hopes that being around her will awaken his memories. But when he gets flashes of his past, they leave him wondering if he's a good or bad guy. As he and Marie spend time together, they grow closer, and Marie starts feeling more comfortable in his presence. Then a news story about an escaped prisoner sends her into a panic, worried that her past is about to rear its ugly head. Her suspicions are reawakened by the coincidence of Jack's arrival at about the same time as the prisoner's escape.

The story is full of twists and turns as Marie struggles with her growing feelings for Jack and her worry that he isn't the nice guy he appears to be. News that the escaped prisoner is headed in her direction, combined with suspicious accidents, keeps Marie on edge. The kayaking scene is intense and nerve-wracking as the fun excursion she and Jack planned turns deadly, and she fears his intentions. A timely discovery puts those fears to rest, but the threat from her past is still out there. When the final confrontation came, I was glued to the pages until it was all over.

Running from her life, her real life, veterinarian Marie wants nothing more than to return to her old life, have friends, meet someone special, join the local book club where they are reading a book by author Marshmallow, no, author Marshland, …no it it author Leslie Marshman, yep that’s it! But she can’t do any of that. When her and her trained Doberman- beagle mix dog are jogging and they discover an unconscious man, a really good looking man. She can’t leave him there. When he regains consciousness, and claims that he can’t remember anything, Marie realizes that she has let her guard down and that could mean that her past life could cost her her life. I loved this action packed thriller, full of questions and memories that can be dangerous for everyone in Jasper Idaho
