Secrets of a Baron's Daughter

Rate this book
Miss Emma Hensworth has a secret— actually several secrets. Secrets, that if known, could alter the fates of everyone she loves. Secrets that have kept most of Society out of Engalworth Court for the past four months. But when a handsome gentleman is brought to her door badly injured and unconscious, her tender heart cannot help but offer her home as a haven for his recovery.

Anthony James Kempton, Viscount Hamdon, heir to the Earl of Licolnhurst, has lived his life in the lap of luxury. A luxury he hates. Son of an overindulged manipulative mother, and a self-centered philandering father, Anthony does not see love anywhere in his future.

His life takes a turn when he wakes up in pain, tied to a bed in a strange house. Now, restricted to bed for a month and unable to travel for almost two, he turns to his favorite kind of book, gothic novels, to fend off the relentless boredom. But when the life of his beautiful and mysterious hostess starts to resemble that of a gothic novel, Anthony has to decide what is real and what are the imaginations of a restless mind. And he will need to do so before the evil villain catches up with the intrepid heroine, but will she let him be her hero?

Didn’t finish around 17%. It’s okay. Emma is just so dull. I wonder if authors know they can make their character say and do absolutely anything they can imagine. I’m not sure why they make them say the most lame things. Emma is acting like a side character for no reason. For instance, one of the first times Emma and the Anthony are in the same room together, they’re with a few other people who are all talking and laughing about their childhoods. She is just sitting there saying absolutely nothing. So someone finally asks her if she has any fun stories from her childhood and she says no, her childhood was mundane and then just scurries out of the room. Like, really? That’s what the author came up with for her to say? Nothing to make her standout or show any personality? Why? The rest of the time she’s always kinda slinking in and out of his room with her tail tucked between her legs having been upset or offended by something Anthony says or does. She’s just kinda lame. And he isn’t much better. Nothing bad but nothing that is making him stand out.

She rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning though. So, the guy has a severe injury, the bone in his leg has broken so bad it’s sticking out of the skin. The doctor fixes it and he’s been unconscious, lying in his own pee for four days. He finally wakes up, they clean him, he’s learning of his injury and all it entails and everything he’s missed out on and what he’ll have to deal with for the next 2 months being bed ridden. So then Emma comes in to meet him and he’s grimacing and scowling and Emma is like so offended by this she can’t believe he would dare be looking at her with a scowl and she is all upset and mad and offended and I’m like, um, hello??! He’s probably in severe pain! His leg was just severely broken and reset, he smacked his head too and it’s the 1700s so there’s barely any good medication! like what did you expect, that he’d just be smiling and laughing?? This is discussed in the next chapter that yes that was exactly why he was grimacing but it annoyed me to no end that Emma couldn’t possibly have drawn this conclusion for herself. She immediately takes it personally. She’s just not a character I care to read about and so I didn’t continue. If this wouldn’t bother you it is probably a fine read. The writing is done well. I just like more interesting characters.

This charming regency is both romantic and suspenseful, and I really enjoyed reading it!

I was intrigued by Emma and her secrets, and I also liked getting to know Anthony better. Forced proximity is one of my favorite tropes, and I enjoyed the progression of their friendship and romance! There were several times where I had to highlight their banter and laugh to myself.

There is a thread of suspense throughout the story, which was really fun! I was on the edge of my seat for the last part of the book, and I was happy with how it all ended. This book was a delight to read, and I am looking forward to reading more books by Teah Kemp Weight!

This isn't a bad book, but I got to around the 20% mark and decided it's not for me. It would be fine for teenage readers just getting into HR's, though. The MC's are 20 and 25 and the pacing and interactions are pretty tame.

this was a well-done Regency romance. The characters are well-developed and the plot was engaging. I enjoyed the book Will look for another in this series to read next.

I enjoyed this debut novel. It had a nice air of mystery and conflict. Sometimes I find characters in situations, like those that happen in this novel, tend to overreact, but I didn't get that at all in this book, which I was glad for. I liked the variety of characters and the romance was sweet.

So many typos. I reported them and hope they get fixed. The story was sweet but felt amateur. I didn't love the characters.

I don't normally read in this genre... but this book makes me WANT to read in this genre, it's that good! Let me tell you all the reasons why you should read this book!

The romance is excellent. I'm a hard sell when it comes to romance. I usually hate romances, they are my least favorite relationships in novels, and I avoid romance books like the plague. This one had me cheering on the leads and their journey from somewhat frosty acquaintances to loving relationship. I was fully absorbed into the relationship and hoped for a happy ending for them. If you love clean romance, you will LOVE the clean romance in this book.

All of the characters are fully developed and fully realized--they exist outside of the romance as individuals, which helped sell every part of this book to me. The main leads have relationships OUTSIDE of the romantic relationship, and the side characters help bring them to life. It makes the whole story and the various relationships feel that much more real and fully fleshed out. I connect with characters through relationships, and since romance is such a hard sell for me, having these secondary characters bringing the protagonists to life helped tremendously.

The plot was fascinating and engaging from start to finish. Most romances (that I've read, which I admit is limited) have had minimal external plot and only relational drama to propel the story forward. THIS story has lots of twists and turns with a very engaging plot as poor Emma deals with lots of troubles with her home life, potentially leaving her on the verge of being married off to a jerk and losing everyone and everything she loves in the process. She's at stake, but so is her house, her family name, and the servants she loves. High stakes--I love it! There's also a mystery available at every section of the story. Once one little mystery is solved, a new one (or ten) pop up, always leaving you guessing throughout the novel. It kept me turning pages from beginning to end.

The writing is absolutely lovely, too.

This book is fantastic. READ IT!! There's something in here to love for everyone. It really is the complete package of awesome!! I can't wait for the next book.

Title : “Secrets of a Baron's Daughter” (Merry Men of Eton Book #1)
Author: #TeahKempWeight
July 18-19, 2024

"Secret Love at Eton" by Teah Kemp Weight is an intriguing Regency romance that mixes mystery, secrets, and love. The story centers on Miss Emma Hensworth, who has kept herself isolated from society at Engalworth Court due to her many secrets. Her life changes when Anthony James Kempton, Viscount Hamdon, arrives at her door injured and unconscious. Despite the risks, Emma’s compassion leads her to offer him sanctuary, setting the stage for an intriguing romance.

Anthony, weary of his aristocratic upbringing, finds himself confined to Emma’s mysterious home. To stave off boredom, he starts reading gothic novels, soon realizing that Emma’s life seems to mirror the plots of his favorite books. As he tries to separate reality from fiction, he becomes more involved in Emma’s secrets and the dangers surrounding her. While Kemp Weight creates a captivating narrative blending suspense and romance, the story dragged a bit for me. It had a slow start, but the suspense kept me turning the pages. Overall, the characters were enjoyable and the plot was interesting, making it a decent read for fans of clean, Regency-era romances with a touch of gothic mystery.

Liked it - Really Liked it

A clean historical romance set in the regency era that has a good dose of suspense since secrets and danger swirl around as the couple gets to know each other. The heroine, 20-year-old Emma Olivia Hensworth, is a strong determined young woman who circumstance has left seemingly alone in the world dealing with uncertainties and dangers. The hero, 25-year-old Anthony James Kempton or Lord Hamdon, gets to know the heroine when he is confined to the her home for several weeks after a riding accident leads to a bad break in his leg.

Simply put, I found this book to be good. I liked the characters and found them believable. The plot was interesting. The suspense kept me turning the pages, without veering into dark & dismal. I would definitely read more of this author / series.

This is a good book, though falling short of exceptional. I liked that there is more to the plot than just the romance, with a bit of suspense and mystery mixed in. I also appreciated the good old-fashioned courtship, and that the author resisted the urge to throw in a fake-dating trope (it seemed for a moment she was going to). The ending was solid, and the inevitable relationship misunderstandings were manageable.

Unfortunately, it does get rather slow at times, and the writing is a bit clunky. There are also some distracting grammatical/editing errors.

Content:
There is no foul language or sex. There is some violence at the end, but it’s fairly minimal. The romance is limited to a couple mildly descriptive kisses. There are some mentions of faith and God, portrayed in a positive light.

Trigger warnings:
Death of a loved one (the event and emotions are described in some detail). There is an attempted abduction of a female character (which fails), and she is also stalked by unknown men.

Lord Hamdon gives me the swoony sighs. I loved this book! I've read 2 & 3 in this series, but I think, dare I say it, this one is my favorite. I enjoyed both MCs and the slow burn romance between them. Lord Hamdon is so sweet and charming and Emma is so strong. The emotional depth, especially from the heroine, was beautifully written, and her character ARC satisfying. I could really feel her depression from losing her family members, and her fears of both being watched and that she would be forced under Mr. Weasel's care. Speaking of the villain, I could NOT stop laughing at Anthony's continual jabs at the man. SO. GREAT. XD One thing I love about this series is you don't just get a low angst romance, but there always a great deal of mystery and suspense with Teah's writing. Sometimes you want a sweet, smooth-sailing romance and sometimes you want seat gripping, hold your breath stories, you know? And every book in this series delivers on the latter perfectly. A fantastic read

A dashing read

I think I should start off by saying that I don't often read historical/regency romance. Heck, I hardly read romance of any kind. I took a chance on this one during a free ebook haul and I'm glad I did - it did not disappoint.

The characters were believable and the plot pretty much kept me entertained from beginning to end.

I must confess that it threw me a little to see the spoken old English written in American English... but since the author is American, it really isn't that out of place. There were also a few typos here and there but nothing that really detracted from the story.

Overall, it was a pleasant read and I would read another book in the series (if and when I revisit this genre lol).

P.S. I also really enjoyed the author's bio at the end. It was truly touching how she opened up about her life and the path she took to fulfill her dream of becoming an author.

🪭Secrets of a Baron's Daughter🪭 by #TeahKempWeight is an action packed mystery that is full of toss and turns that just keeps you reading.

The author did a great job in ensuing mystery in the first couple of pages of the novel, even involving a man of God. What does a women in her early twenties in the Victorian era have to hide? Gosh it made me curious and all I could do was keep on reading. Despite that the author really kept the tension high, with hidden secrets, mystery men in the window, and accidents.

Want a good regency mystery? This is the one for you!

"He was not sure he had ever met a lady so wholly unimpressed by his very presence."

This reminds me a bit of Northamger Abbey, but instead of the heroine seeing gothic villainy around every corner, it's the male lead! Emma and Anthony's relationship is so soft and sweet. The secrets dividing them are eventually conquered, and he can see that she's not some villainess (that would be her terrible aunt) but someone struggling to survive with the issues she's be given.

"Her candor had woken him. Her secrets had intrigued him. Her goodness and beauty had captured him, and now he felt wholly and completely alive."

This is the first in the Merry Men of Eton series. It is a kisses only Regency era romance.

I had actually read the others in this series but had missed this one. When I got a little break in my ARC reads, I went back and read this one from my TBR. (It didn't hurt that I'd just read the latest ARC from this author and really liked it.)

I liked this one very much. There was some mystery and a little suspense along with my dose of romance.

I personally think that Teah is an under read author. I've enjoyed all of her books!

4.5 star for teens and adults.

This sweet HEA has a well developed plot that had me hooked. It is lengthy but Emma and Alan have a lot to deal with if they are to overcome a few big challenges. The main characters and an uncle were easy to like but I was wondering when Emma's brother would save the day or was he really lost to war. It is suitable for any age and anyone appreciative of complex plots will enjoy this clean and well written romance. Enjoy!

Very interesting story

I really enjoyed this intriguing book. Much of the action happens in the latter part of the book but that also means the MC's get to know each other a bit first. It is a clean read both in language and just kisses, which is always appreciated. I did like the way the author tied up the many loose ends. Lovely ending. This is the first time I've read this author's books but would like to read more.

Emma Hensworth is in the middle of a serious dilemma when Viscount Hamdon, accompanied by his friend Nicholas, arrives on her doorstep gravely wounded, further compounding her need for secrecy. It's almost impossible to elaborate without revealing the plot.

The story unfolds in a believable way...until the denouement, which was difficult to rationalize. I enjoyed it, in spite of the ending and the many errors.

a delight to read

Though there are a few errors in spelling and it could have been proof read to perfection, the story in and of itself is so delightful, the small slip ups are easily overlooked.
A unique plot with more than one ne’er do well. Good characterisations, settings and emotions that helped to see and feel the emotions and stress etc of the story.
Completely clean and worth reading.

Entertaining novel about a young woman whose brother has been rumored to be killed in the Napoleon War and her father dying from consumption leaving her vulnerable to await confirmation. Attempting to hold the estate together, a young viscount who was seriously wounded in a carriage accident was brought to her home to recuperate. Yet, she needed to guard her secrets. A well-written Regency novel sure to maintain your attention throughout.....

This was the perfect blend of romance and suspense I adored all the twisted and turns of the book. It has absolutely no spice but is still a great book. I can't wait for the next one to come out in truth the only reason. I didn't read the whole book in one day is because my Mom wouldn't let me use the computer.

very well-written and delightful!

There is love (sweet and clean, and naturally developed), mysteries (spies, and death, and danger), dialogues (witty interactions, and miscommunications, and assumptions), and of course, Regency. If any of these things is your thing, then run and grab a copy!

This book had a slow start for me. I'm glad I stuck with it because I liked the ending. I enjoyed the characters over all, but the plot didn't hold my attention well until at the half way point.

Clean
Language/profanity: none
Sex/innuendo: only sweet kisses
Gore/Violence: Some fight scenes, not descriptive. There were some descriptions of wounds.

Mourning.

Intriguing with twists and turns, I didn't see. Story sweet, slow burn romance. As well as save the estate element. Characters are very relatable, even the ones I didn't initially like. It's kind of an example to try to see things from other people's perspective. I can't imagine how hard it would be in the young woman's place at the beginning of the story.

a sweet clean romance

I love it when people who have had troubled lives can find and complete each other. This is one of those tells. It also includes espionage, missing relatives, more than one villain, and loyal friends and servants. I enjoyed this clean romance.
