Yes, I'm a Woman, and I'm Traveling Alone: Struggles and Success of One of the First Solo Female Travel Influencers

Rate this book
Have you ever been mistaken for a prostitute because you're a woman traveling alone? Has at least one person you know assumed you have a sugar daddy because you're posting selfies in a beautiful location? Does your family and friends think something is wrong with you because you want to travel instead of immediately settling down? Do you not give AF because you're a bold, independent woman who will travel the world solo if you damn well want to? Good. Welcome to the life and non-stop travel movie of Alyssa Ramos; renowned travel blogger and one of the first "solo female travel influencers", who has been traveling the world solo, full time, and for a living, for the last ten years.

This cyclone of a book is based on the real experiences of the first few years of her jump into solo travel, how she did it, what it was like, and how she dealt with the unexpected backlash that comes with the stigma and stereotypes of being a woman traveling alone. Spoiler alert, she dealt with it really well by drinking half a bottle of wine in Iceland, and writing a viral article sarcastically titled, "Yes, I'm Pretty and I'm Traveling Alone".

From figuring out logistics, itineraries, and self-photography during a time when social media was just starting up, to dealing with a constant love saga and fiery flings, and sprinkling in the true hustle of what it took to become a successful blogger/influencer, this book is sure to take you on a whirlwind journey around the world like no other you've ever seen. If you want some real behind the scenes, and some serious solo travel tea, book a flight, and take this book to read en route to your next destination.

I would probably give this book between 3.5 and 4 stars. (Alyssa, if you read this, I'm sorry! But I try to be an honest reviewer and absolutely have no hate towards you). I want to preface this with the fact that I completely admire Alyssa Ramos. I've followed her on Instagram since the beginning, love her posts, and she is one of my all time favorite travel bloggers. This woman broke into a field as a solo female traveler before people really thought it was possible which is phenomenal.

So, we'll start with the less than desirable part. In the beginning she admits that a lot of this book stems from a fairly toxic relationship which is completely relatable. Most of us have been through some kind of heartbreak or grief that lit a fire in us. However, the book isn't just about one guy. It seems that every new adventure she is meeting some super hot guy and finding romance. I mean to an extent I get it, what girl hasn't dreamed about being swept of her feet in a foreign country. The hyper-fixation on this and the tone through the first part of the book make it come across as a little "high school" and it starts to get redundant.

There's also subtle bragging. Again, Alyssa Ramos has every right to brag. She's wildly successful, clearly a financial and marketing genius, driven, passionate, beautiful, and wants to help others gain meaningful life experiences. But those aren't the things she brags about. A little bit of the LA girl comes out in the book talking about flashy cars and Hollywood escapades. It is a part of her life story but it comes across as a little boastful and since that's not a lifestyle I have ever been a part of or desired, it was just hard to relate to for me which was disappointing because I generally find her posts and blogs incredibly relatable.

So here's the good. The book clearly shows her journey towards growth. It's why my initial "oh my god I am gonna have to leave a bad review" panic jumped to "oh okay I see why she played up the "immaturity" part in the beginning to lead more to a "independent" strength at the end. While I do think the beginning was a little over done the ending was great. Once you hit Iceland the book was more what I expected.

I absolutely adore any part where she speaks openly about her family, especially her grandmother and her Cuban heritage. It's beautiful and vulnerable as is the stuff with her grandpa. All of the pieces about the actual travel, career, and destinations are perfect, they just pick up a lot more in the ladder part of the book which was the part that I enjoyed most.

She is incredibly detail-oriented (you could legit use this as a map to some of her travel destinations) and informative. I also love the vulnerability and transparency about her insecurities. This is a freaking gorgeous and successful female that seemingly has it all (which she worked hard for) and she is very open about how her insecurities at times (especially abour being judged for her looks) almost prevented her from being successful and she had to push through and "fake it til she made it" which would give a lot of aspiring women hope to achieve dreams.

I will buy the second book when it comes out because I think that will be more my style and she's still my favorite travel blogger. I think I would also still recommend the book to friends that enjoy travel I would just let them know that the first parts of the book weren't to my taste due to the above reasons.

I have been a fan of Alyssa since 2017 when I found her blog while doing research for a trip to Cuba. This book was so inspiring to anybody who is interested in travel. I have so much respect for Alyssa now that I understand what it took for her to get where she is. Alyssa shares the good, the bad and the ugly. Can't wait to read another book!

The author is great, and came across as very authentic and likeable. But the book itself did nothing for me- it was kinda like a memoir that was trying to be a novel, focusing way too much on fanciful details (like the men the narrator was flirting with in each destination) instead of seeking any real depth.

What an Adventure of a Lifetime

An interesting view in the life of a travel blogger. The ins and outs of a single woman traveling solo. The advise she gives for other women traveling her path is heartwarming.
