A Little Too Late is a sweet second chance romance by Sarina Bowen. Ava and Reed were college sweethearts and they haven’t seen one another since their breakup a decade ago.

Reed hasn’t been to his hometown where Madigan Mountain in even longer than a decade, but his dad wanting to sell the family business has him coming home. Only to find out that his college ex/love of his life Ava is working for the family business he has nothing to do with.

I loved seeing Reed and Ava work together to try to find a solution to the business problems. I also loved seeing Ava slowly start to fall for Reed again and decide to give him another chance.

Second chance romances can be so messy, but this was lower on the angst side. It had just enough romance and steam and was a fun listen! The narration was on point as always for Sebastian York and Andi Arndt. I highly recommend listening to this one!

I'm not invested in the story nor the characters. I don't like Ava and I find her choices in life questionable. Reed is fine but I'm not sure he deserves a second chance. Ava's friends act childish for their age.

"You are so loved."
Diving into a Sarina Bowen book always makes me feel good. She always makes me want to travel to wherever her characters are and stay there. This book made me want to fly to Colorado and learn how to ski. It had this dream-like quality you want to see in second-chance romance.
And the characters felt special, as did that warm, fuzzy feeling in my stomach when I reached the end.

"The time I spent with Reed feels like a dream I once had."
Reed is a dream. He works in California, a real-life workaholic with no personal life, only focused on his job. All the time, every time. He hasn't been home in ages, and he doesn't miss it, or anyone. He's known as the Ice King at the office, and that's an appropriate moniker. Maybe.

"Every time Ava walked into my room in Vermont, it felt like a brand-new miracle. Together, we had everything."
Ava is no Ice Queen, though. She was, and is, strong when she had to be, but there's a vulnerable side to her that's endearing. She's focused on her job too, but in a totally different way. She does have a private life, amazing friends, and she gives a lot of herself to others.

"Once upon a time, for a few glorious weeks, I'd pictured a future hand in hand. I'd never felt like that about anyone before. Or since."
Ten years before, they were different people. Ten years before, it seemed like they had a shot at forever and nothing could tear them apart. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be.
Now, when Reed is forced back to his hometown and steps into his dad's office, he's unexpectedly face to face with Ava. Neither of them knows how to react, and that was perfect and very realistic. I mean, what do you say to the love of your life when you reunite ten years later? I hate your guts, don't talk to me, stop looking so damn gorgeous?
I suppose, but what if the feelings never went away? Is it that easy to turn your back then?

"Stop doing that."
"What?"
"You're smiling. Don't. That smile makes me stupid."

Their chemistry is insane. They've never experienced what they had together all those years back with anyone else, but Ava doesn't want to get hurt again. It's going to take some getting used to this situation, some distance for her to cope. Except Reed never really gives her a chance.
She's somehow back in his life, he knows what he wants, and he goes for it. And it really is a little too late to go back now.

"I've been waiting years to be kissed again like this, and I didn't even know it."
You get glimpses of what they were like, and you see that, despite all their differences, they're incredible together. They always have been. It's that kind of love that is mixed with friendship and trust. The small memories of things so simple they seem meaningless, but are anything but. And they're broken without each other: they may not have realized it until now, but there was always something missing.

"Sitting here with you makes me want to feel things again."
It's not only their relationship that needs mending, others do too. Reed's with his dad and his whole family. There's a family business on the line. In more than one way, it's time to face the past so they can move into the future. Is it going to be easy? Nope. There's resentment and hurt, and I do wish Reed would have done a bit more groveling, to be honest. Still, it would be hard not to fall for the guy even in real life.

I loved the atmosphere of this small town, the mountains, the snow... it's the perfect Fall/Winter read, and I think it sets the stage wonderfully to the remaining books in this series. I need a snow holiday and I need it now!

"Not everything works out for us on the first try. But I've got as many tries in me as it takes, honey. And I'm going to love you until the day I die."
They were once carefree twenty-something year old kids, in over their heads with the kind of love you find once in a lifetime. They didn't really know what they had, but they do now. It's finally the time for forever.

Her hand finds the back of my neck and strokes my skin. I close my eyes and try to memorize this perfect feeling. “It’s always been you,” I whisper.

A Little Too Late
is a low-angst second chance, small town romance about Ava and Reed. After falling madly in love in college, Reed runs away to California in the wake of an awful tragedy. 10 years later, he comes barreling back into Ava’s life at his family-owned ski resort where she works. And so the second chance begins.

There’s an actual plot here with the ski resort drama, but I was honestly underwhelmed because I knew the sale wasn’t going to go through. I also loathe when there isn’t great groveling AND when characters have to tell the guy who fucked up to go get his girl. Why can’t he make that decision? Why didn’t he grovel? He broke her HEART. Ugh.

There isn’t a lot of angst, which I typically love (need?) in second chance romances. I feel like they fell back into it relatively quickly, and again, no groveling.

It was a really quick and otherwise enjoyable read. If you like light and fluffy second chance romances, you’ll definitely like this one. It also feels like a perfect winter read because of the setting.

I was super excited to start a new Sarina Bowen yesterday and I don't know what happened but this one didn't work for me at all.

The writing felt different, subpar to what I've read before from this author. Nevermind that I'm a sucker for a second chance at love romance, there was such a dearth of chemistry between the leads that I majorly skimmed several chapters out of complete indifference. The Madigan resort family drama dragged but since I wasn't remotely invested in the romance chances of my interest focusing on the subplot were slim.

Total miss for me but as always with books it's subjective, it could have been my expectations, my mood or not the right time. Do check some other reviews, many of my friends on here enjoyed this one.

5 Sparkly Snowy Ava and Reed Stars

When you find The One, you take his hand, and you don’t let go.

When I saw that Sarina Bowen had a new book out , I was instantly curious. Then I read the blurb and was itching to read it. I was hooked from the opening page to the very last line. I am so here for Madigan Mountain and the characters that live there.

This is a gorgeous second chance romance , set on a beautiful mountain at the Madigan Ski Resort , in Colorado. The glittering majesty of the backdrop belies the murky darkness of the relationship between Mark Madigan and his three sons - Reed , Weston and Crew. Once they were a happy family but the death of Mrs Madigan ,when Reed was about 19 , threw them into a spiral of distress with Mark not being anything like the Father they had known. All three boys leave home at the first opportunity and the relationship they had splinters and shatters like the most fragile of icicles. Reed dives into his college life and he and Ava meet , connect and fall hard for each other. They are soul mates but life throws them a curveball and just when Ava needed Reed the most , he left her. He goes to San Francisco and for ten years builds a high flying career as a Venture Capitalist.

Meanwhile , Ava (32) is working at Madigan Mountain Ski Resort as his Father's right hand woman. She has made a success of her career too , even though she has not gone down the path she thought she would.
When his Dad decides to move on with his own life with Melody , his new wife, Reed (32) is forced to return to the Mountain. Ava and Reed cross paths again - I loved the scene where he sees her for the first time in ten years. His shock is almost palpable. I also loved Ava's show of retribution - a small gesture but very entertaining.

The story is told in dual first person POV. There are some flashback scenes told in the third person which works really well. The flashbacks are few and brief but they say what needs to be said perfectly.

Back when we were a couple, I would sometimes stare at the handsome rich kid from Colorado and wonder how any boy could be so beautiful.

I loved Ava and Reed equally. They are both so likeable from the very start. One thing I thought was really well done, was that you are assured all the way along that Reed never loved anyone like he loved Ava.

Ava Aichers, with whom I had the only truly passionate and absorbing love affair of my life, is right here in front of me.

No one came close but he was never derogatory about the women he had been with. His most recent date, Harper, is feisty and to the point (I would love to read a book with her as the heroine) and even though she was the 'Other Woman' in a way , I couldn't help but like her. She was pretty kick ass.

All the secondary characters are interesting , engaging and make you want more - I am itching to read Weston and Crew's stories. A Little Too Close and A Little Too Wild which also release this month (Oct 2022).

The baddies were a delight to boo at. That part of the plot was a little easy to guess but it was executed well and enjoyable to read.

As much as I loved the characters , it was clear that they very much had their flaws. Mark Madigan surprised me and I wasn't expecting a couple of the things that happened around him. Ms Bowen can certainly make her characters cut deep with their words.

This romance had the most delicious small town feel to it, which is like kindle catnip to me.

I groan into my coffee cup, because mountain gossip is swift and brutal. This place is like a small town on meth.

I relished every page and listened to and read it. Excellent narration , as always, by Andi Arndt and Sebastian York.

Reed Madigan is going to wreck me all over again. And I’m going to let him.

I will absolutely be devouring the other two books and this one is definitely going to be a go to re read for sure.

And I don’t even care, because the only man I ever loved is kissing me in the snow on a moonlit night, and romantic moments are as fleeting in my life as shooting stars.

If you want to lose yourself in a second chance romance with passion , fun , heartache and a plethora of characters that you will fall in love with, then I recommend A Little Too Late.

HEA? More HFN but Ava and Reed will most likely appear in the next two books. It was a good ending though.

Cheating? No. Both H and h saw others during their 10 year separation but no significant relationships for either of them.

Be aware

One of my favourite authors.
Sarina Bowen has a way of a spinning a romance with humour and emotion with great back stories.
Ava is working at a ski resort owned by her ex boyfriends family.
They were college lovers.
Reed has nothing to do with the resort. At least Ava thought that.
Reid shows up at the resort with plans to stay for three days to help his father.
Their relationship didn't end well so seeing eachother was akward to say the least.
Lots of humour and banter as Sarina Bowen does.

Let me start by saying that I read this series in a stupid order, and that is admittedly my own fault. I literally read it backwards. However, I had my reasons. The series is made up of interconnected stand alones novels. While it is recommended you read them in order, you can choose to only read some of them. I had initially only been interested in the third book, as it is written by one of my favourite authors. But then I finished it and I was curious about the second book. Book one just didn't jump out at me, that is, until I finished book two. So yes, I read this backwards, dumb, I know.

However, aside from my own dumb decisions, I think the structure of this series has some objective issues as well. The trilogy is written by three different authors. Each book revolves around a Madigan brother coming home, dealing with his family trauma, and finding love. The problem is, by having each book be written by a different author, in addition to having every brother have the same narrative arc, each book paints the two non-leading Madigan brothers in a really poor light. That was part of the reason I didn't want to read book one initially, because the main character is hated in books two and three. So yah, I feel like the structure of this series has some crucial flaws.

On to this story in particular. I've read a different one of Sarina Bowen's novels and really didn't enjoy it. So going into this book, between my experience with the author and how the main characters were portrayed in the other novels, I had low hopes. But this actually blew me out of the water! This book was so well written and planned out. The setting is great for a winter read, the pacing is downright perfect, and the characters are shockingly well-rounded. I absolutely fell in love with both Ava and Reed. They were written as very mature, realistic characters. This made the story's romance and conflicts all the more engaging, as the character writing propelled everything to be that much more authentic.

So overall, I really enjoyed this book on its own. I just have questions as to why the series is structured the way that it is.

I had such a good time with this audiobook! I have liked everything that I have read by Sarina Bowen so far so picking this book up was a no-brainer. When I found out that this book would feature a second-chance romance, I was even more excited since that is one of my favorite tropes. Once I started listening to this book, I didn’t want to stop and ended up finishing it in less than 24 hours. This was an incredibly entertaining romance.

Reed and Ava were both great characters and it was obvious that they were perfect for each other. Things didn’t work out for them the first time around but I was confident that they would be able to work out their differences. Reed returns to his family’s resort after 10 years away and is shocked to find Ava there working for his father. Reed’s father wants to sell the resort but there are some doubts as to whether that is the best decision for everyone. I really enjoyed seeing Reed and Ava work together and the way that they watched out for each other proved how much they still care about one another.

Andi Arndt and Sebastian York did a fantastic job with the narration of this book. I think that their voices complement each other very well which makes for a very pleasant listening experience. I think that they were both able to bring the characters of this story to life and were able to bring a lot of emotion into their reading. I am certain that their narration added to my overall enjoyment of this story.

I would not hesitate to recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance. This was a fun story with characters that were easy to root for. I had a fantastic time watching this pair find their happily ever after together. I cannot wait to meet the next two Madigan brothers!

I received a review copy of this book from Tuxbury Publishing LLC.

Initial Thoughts
I enjoyed this book! Reed and Ava were both great characters and it was obvious that they were perfect for each other. I am a sucker for second-chance romances and I couldn't wait to see this pair make things work this time. Sebastian York and Andi Arndt did a fantastic job with the narration.

Those two were each other's first and only real loves in college ten years ago.
But then things happened and he left. And now he's back home at his family's ski resort in Colorado to find out why the old man wants to sell the family legacy.
And surprise - Ava is there too - she's basically running the place with his dad.

LET THE FUN TIMES BEGIN! 😂

Another super adorable Sarina Bowen romance!

I loved reading this. I loved the whole ski resort atmosphere - I don't do winter sportsies but I love snow and winter and hot chocolate and the whole mood was just beautiful.
I loved that we got so many adorable and funny and sweet moments. But we also got some mystery, excitement and heartbreak. I just really enjoyed reading this.

This was the perfect second chance love story in an amazing setting with a great cast of people - can't wait to read the other two brothers' stories - they still seem a bit grumpy and not very forgiving. 🤷‍♀️

A LITTLE TOO LATE was an adorable + funny + sparky + sweet + snowy + exciting second-chance Romance! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Reed - this one is MINE!

A well written story that I felt was just a little light on the romance. I guess I wanted more from Reed....I wanted him to open up more about his past and to really talk more about it to Ava. I wanted to see more 'I can't live without you' passion. There was just a little something missing for me but I still enjoyed the story.

This took me forever to read and most of that was due to personal life stress so maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood for this one…but I’m pretty sure it just wasn’t a very good book lol I found it to be very uninteresting, the chemistry lacking, the background about the nature of the second chance romance fucked up which made the heroine’s quickness to fall back in bed with him questionable to say the least. The family drama was all over the place with the dad somehow acting like the victim. Idk I just found this book to be a bit random and not super well written or well thought out 🤷🏼‍♀️

This review may contain spoilers, so fair warning, upon reading the review.

First Impressions
A Little Too Late is the first book in the newest trilogy by this trio combo of authors: Sarina Bowen, Rebecca Yarros and Devney Perry. This is the first time I have read anything in this type of series this group of authors have done together. I was pretty eager for this one, and the biggest reason for that is because I have seen reviews all over the blogging sphere for “A Little Too Late” and I know how many have really enjoyed this story. I decided to pick this one up in audio, because it has two of my favorite duo, doing the dual narration and it was wonderful. I am glad that I did this one in audio because once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down and it was fantastic especially the later half of the story. Now to be honest, this story didn’t completely wow me. The relationship aspects were a bit messy and I am not a big fan of flashbacks but once these two were able to work through the mess they made and find common ground, then the story really start to glow and that is when I started to fall in love with it fully.

Summary
The gist of the story is that our main characters: Reed and Ava were once in a relationship in college. But when there was a tragedy that affected them both, a bad breakup happened due to Reed’s actions. And now Ava is working for his father, in a place he hasn’t stepped foot in around ten years. When Reed hears that his father is selling the place, he heads back home. What he finds when he gets there is the one woman he has never been able to get over. At first, tensions are high between Reed and Ava as they have unresolved issues, Ava still isn’t over the hurt that Reed caused and Reed is working n repairing his relationship with Ava and his father. But as Ava and Reed work together to find a solution for the mountain, they also begin to mend old wounds and rebuild their relationship…

What I Loved
There were many elements to this story that I ended up loving and I have to say that I was so involved in this story. I just wanted Reed and Ava to find their way to their happy ever after. I was really thrilled to see them find such common ground after the angst at the beginning of the relationship. I think what I loved most was seeing them reconnect after resolving past issues. There is quite a bit of fun antics that is played here at times, but in reality, they were a bit petty in some ways. It depends on your perspective on Ava’s character on how you react to it. I did find the whole setting of the story to be one of my favorite aspects of the story. I am a big skier and love the mountains and ski resorts, I mean I live in Utah so I kinda have to love it haha It also just has me so ready for Winter and the ski season. I just love visiting resorts in the winter time even if you don’t ski. There is such a fun culture here around it and I felt like Sarina Bowen really captured it just right here. I did enjoy the family aspects and I am curious to see the brothers come together in the trilogy. One element I love the most in books, is family connection, especially in seeing families reconnect with each other and try to work past old hurts as I think this is something relatable to most of us. The romance that is built within the story is where we see them in college in the past and then in the current timeline. I really enjoyed seeing them rebuild their relationship and find common ground with each other. It was also so interesting to see the conflict in this story and I just wanted the villains to get their justice haha

What I Struggled With
There were a few aspects to the story that I struggled with. The first is the flashbacks. To be honest, I am not a fan of flashbacks. I know some people love em, but only a few authors handle them right for me to enjoy them and unfortunately it didn’t quite work for me here. And then the petty actions especially by the heroine at the beginning of the story I felt were beneath her and her friends. It made it hard for me to want to be on her side. I understand he hurt her, but I could never see myself acting the way that she did no matter how hurt you are, and it’s been YEARS since they saw each other. Also, I felt like the first half of the story was just all over the place and a bit “messy” and I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue with the story. I do think having this story in narration saved the book for me and by the time I got to the 50% mark, I was all in for the couple.

The Narration
Sebastian York and Andi Arndt are two of my favorite narrators and I absolutely love it when we get books where they narrate a story together. They do so well for the contemporary genre in romance, and I really admired the way that this author wrote the story and seeing the way that these two had implemented the perfect tones to the story. These two have such personable voices and really capture your attention for the characters.

Overall View
I found A Little Too Late to be a captivating season romance that will have you ready to dip your toes into the winter season, with some intriguing portrayals of emotion and heart to grab your attention and make you want to cheer this couple on!

4 STARS

I really enjoyed to beginning to the Madigan series!

What I loved:
1. This second chance romance was well done. The reason he left, the return, falling back in love with not only the heroine but his hometown was great to watch.
2. I loved the heroine. She had a quiet strength to her.
3. Sarina already has me intrigued for the next two brother’s stories.
4. I will always enjoy a story where the town comes together to take on a bigger corporation who wants to destroy that small town vibe.
5. I enjoyed the narrators.
6. Great secondary cast of characters I’m excited to return to.

I would have liked a bit more steam, and I never expect super steamy from this author, but I missed it.

There wasn’t anything I disliked, but I wasn’t consumed by the story. It was good, entertaining, an easy listen. Would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a wintery (not Christmas) romance.

4.5 'You are so loved' Stars!
ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Back in 2020, three authors teamed up and wrote an amazing rockstar romance series that many of us loved. Sarina Bowen, Rebecca Yarros and Devney Perry are back this year with another collaboration and I am all over the idea of a small-town / mountain themed series. Sarina Bowen starts with a beautiful second chance love story that will make you root for this couple and get you curious and excited to know more about the other two mysterious Madigan siblings.

A Little Too Late is the first installment in the Madigan Mountain series and it tells the story of Reed Madigan, the oldest sibling, and his reunion with his college sweetheart, Ava. Reed left Colorado many years ago and he is now back to see what is going on with his family’s mountain resort. What he didn’t expect is to find his ex-girlfriend working there. These two didn’t leave things well, especially Reed, and now the past is coming back with a force. Especially their intense connection and chemistry. Will the past win again or is it time for Reed and Ava to finally be happy together?

“To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides.”

I loved this book! Such a great start to this new series. Second chances are probably my all-time favorite romances to read and A Little Too Late was such a beautiful example. I loved reading how Reed and Ava’s relationship started, how it developed, how it ended and how this couple reconnects after so many years and so many experiences away from one another. It got really emotional at times and I loved every second of it. I fell in love with this couple and these new characters. I loved the chemistry between Reed and Ava and their love for each other. I cannot wait to read more about this crew and thank God we have two more installments on the way!

I haven’t been living, I realize. Not the way I used to. And I want it back. All of it. Including Ava.
Especially Ava.

Therefore, I am rating A Little Too Late with 4.5 STARS because I found it to be the perfect way to start this new series and to start getting to know these characters that I am sure we will absolutely adore. As I said, I love second chances and Reed and Ava’s is one you cannot miss. If you love this troupe and small town / mountain themed romance, this series will be right up your alley. I cannot wait to read Rebecca and Devney’s stories next!

Well if this wasn’t disappointing..
Okay, first : The fact that the heroine planned her life in function of the hero after their breakup. The hErO who actually dumped her the next minute she had a miscarriage was the weirdest, dumbest and most unhealthy thing I’ve ever read.

The relationship between the protagonists were shallow. It was a damn second chance romance with some deep traumas so I was eventually expecting more of an anguish relationship between them, more talking about what happened and more ACTS from the hero for them to get back together. It felt like the author had just highlighted the important issues and topics and centered most of the book around conversations and scenes that were useless.

I wanted to dnf it so many times but kept reading just in case I missed some important points for the 2 other books left in the series wish btw are written by two of my fav’ authors. ( and it was pointless)🙃

First and foremost, i have to say that the overarching storyline is what ultimately really sold me on this series. The family dynamic between the Madigan men was like a gut punch, so obviously I’m all in. lol

That should tell you that there will be some angst and feeling of all the feels. But more than that, it really piqued my interest. Now, here’s what I loved:
The setting sounds rad! While you find me skiing down a mountain EVER, I enjoy this premise.
Reed is a sweetheart.
The couple’s history, while sad, was a key selling point. And ultimately, how they overcame their issues was great to experience.
The hints of humor and secondary cast of characters were a hoot!

Although I thought there would be a teensy bit more steam, this was a definite win! I’m looking forward to the next books in the series!

2.5 stars. 😭 I wanted to love this one. Bowen is a sure-thing author for me. But somehow this was a miss for me. I looked back at my notes and with comments I wrote like, “She is being purposely dense,” and “I just want to kick him,” I clearly took issue with the characterizations and the characters’ life choices. Reed has been gone for 10 yrs and has no interest in ever going home again. His mother died and father turned into a mean drunk. But when he gets a message that the family ski resort is being sold he decides to go back to make sure the family legacy’s sale is legit. Ava has been working for Madison Resort for 10 years after a traumatic break up with Reed. Somehow she makes her way to the resort (to get to know his past? For revenge? This part is actually pretty unclear.) She is still there when Reed returns but it’s unclear what her position is (Operations Manager maybe? I don’t know, but apparently she pretty much runs the place?)

What worked for me: 1) I typically like 2nd chance romances. 2). I liked some of the family dynamics. 3). The new wife made her husband call his sponsor before he sobered up. Go girl! You give him the what for!

What didn’t work for me: 1) Ava, girl, that is some weird stuff you pulled by moving in to the dysfunctional life he left behind. Like, really weird. 2). The buyers were a bit too much. ESPECIALLY pushing the alcohol on a non-drinker. That would have sealed their fate in my book. But apparently, that was just not that big of a deal. 3). Ava’s sense just walked out the door with the new buyers. Goodbye, sense. Why in the world would she think she needed to be totally drunk to gain their respect? Get a clue. 4). I really had little patience for both of them. They acted like teenagers. It was hard to read. Especially lines like, “Ava is the only one allowed to break my heart.” 🙄 5) Ava is upset that Reed points out her job security and raise isn’t in the contract. “I’m sure it was an oversight and they’ll be true to their word.” I just can’t with this girl. 6). The miscarriage was really just a plot device and the fact that she sees Reed as a “hot guy”. Yes, a hot guy who dumped you when you had a miscarriage. Like a hot potato. And it didn’t affect his hotness AT ALL. Nope. Gah!!!!

All in all this was a miss for me. But as this was the only miss that I’ve read by Bowen I will consider it a strange fluke and keep on keepin’ on with this author.

I was so intrigued by this series and the backstory of these characters, and Sarina Bowen books always leave my heart full. A Little Too Late is a great start to his multi-author series. Winter vibes, a touching story, healing and hope and the power of community. This second chance romance has all the feels and lots of swoons- a great standalone and a beautiful world builder for the Madigan Mountain world.

Our hero, workaholic Carlifornian Reed, hasn’t been home in a long time- and by design. But home for the first time in ages, he finds himself crossing paths with his former love Ava in the place he least expects it- his father’s office. These two have a lot of history to unpack, but time has changed them, and despite their awkward initial interactions, there is still so much chemistry between them. Is there hope for a second chance between these two after heartbreak, or is it just a little too late?

I loved both Ava and Reed. Reed doesn’t start out the best- he’s a workaholic who seems as icey as the mountain peaks locals ski on, but I warmed up to him quickly. Ava has a great combination of vulnerability and strength. She’s hard working, kind, loving, but she’s been hurt- and she’s not sure she can risk the kind of heartbreak Reed has already caused her. But I love how Reed handles her hesitation- by avid and lovable pursuit. I loved us getting glimpses of their past juxtaposing the adults they’ve become- how they are ready for each other now. Their love story alone is really adorable (though the steam level here was really low, and I really wanted more of it), but we also have a great secondary growth with Reed and his family- him finding ways to repair relationships that have been distant and to fall back in love with his home.

I loved the winter vibes too- the Madigan Mountain setting itself came to life in this story, and it's amazing how a snowy setting warms the heart. A ski resort, mountains, snow- it just had me feeling all cozy. We get great glimpses into the Madigan family- and glimpses of the brothers whose stories we’ve yet to get. I loved the family dynamic. I feel already so immersed in this world and in these characters, even the secondary ones, and I can’t wait for more from this collaboration!

I enjoyed this a lot. It was a great way to start out a new series! I also loved the setting. A snowy, cozy ski lodge?! Yes, please, sign me up!

I was sucked in the moment I started it. The chemistry between Reed and Ava was palpable from their every interaction. You could tell they were meant to be. The story also has a bit of a mystery to it and a great cast of characters! I just wish there was a bit more romance and steam.

Overall, a fun and charming read with interesting characters and setting. I am excited to see how the other books will play out.

Y'all, I have a feeling I'm never going to want to leave Madigan Mountain.

Sarina Bowen delivered a stellar series opener with A Little too Late. I was pulled in to Ava and Reed's story immediately, and my heart latched on to them fiercely. I loved Ava's fire and the way she turned Reed's heart to a pile of goo. Their second-chance romance was lovely - an emotional, spicy-sweet affair and I loved every minute of it.

I also loved the Madigan Mountain storyline in general. I loved the way Reed's storyline with his family played out. I loved Melody who was a secondary character with a mostly small role, but she was written thoughtfully and in the end, kind of stole the show for me a little bit.

This story stands brilliantly on its own, but also teased just enough of what's to come that I am so excited to meet the other Madigan brothers. I am already wholly in love with Madigan Mountain, and my heart will be staying here a while! ~ Shelly, 5 Stars

Universal / Amazon / Apple Books / Nook / Kobo / Google / Audio

Reed's coming back home because his dad is selling the family business, the one he walked away from. Seeing his ex Ava again, finding out she works for that family business? Yeah, uh, it's not exactly a welcome sight for him, but he has to work with her if he wants to save this business. He can ignore the fact that they still have that chemistry. He can ignore the fact that he's falling in love all over again but he's still not going to stick around after everything is wrapped up with the business...

Ah second chances, one of my favorite tropes. If they're written like this one - low on the angst, high on the heart, in a beautiful setting with an adorable couple at the center, then I'm sure to be a fan, and I definitely am. Reed and Ava fall back into each other comfortably and easily, with obvious strong feelings still there, and I was rooting them on with every page that flipped. The Madigan Mountain series is off to a wonderful start, I can't wait for the second Madigan to fall in love when A Little Too Close is released.

3.5 stars/rounded up. A Little Too Late is the first book in the Madigan Mountain collab series! I loved the Hush Note rockstar romance series that Sarina Bowen, Devney Perry, and Rebecca Yarros collab’d on and was excited for this new series they were doing! There are 3 standalone books in the Madigan Mountain series, each by one of the authors, following the 3 Madigan brothers at their family’s ski resort in Colorado.

This first book was a great intro to the series! The story starts with Reed Madigan headed back to Colorado, he received an email from his father the day before telling Reed and his 2 brothers (the heroes of the next 2 books) that he got remarried and is planning to sell the mountain property/ski resort, Madigan Mountain, that has been in their family for generations. After their beloved mother’s death years ago, the brothers all went their separate ways and fled. Reed hasn’t been home for 10 years and is surprised when he gets to the resort and finds his college ex, Ava, working for his father.

This was a sweet second chance romance between Ava and Reed. Reed comes back to Colorado and wants to ensure his father isn’t taken advantage of with the sale of the property, when he sees Ava there things get a bit more complicated. We have a few flashback chapters between Reed and Ava when they met in college in Vermont and what split them up (the change up of writing style/POV style in these chapters kind of threw me off).

Fun moments: lots of skiing at Madigan Mountain, we get an intro to the Madigan family and I can’t wait for Reed’s brothers books already, we meet Ava’s friends Raven and Callie (the heroines of the next 2 books).

CW: alcoholism (side character), miscarriage

The premise of this book had me hype to read it. Second chance, college sweethearts, a mountain ski resort, a prodigal son returning home after years away. All right up my alley.

Unfortunately, this ended up being a frustrating mess that badly needed more editing. This is probably going to be long and may lean towards rant-y but I’m going to try and be cohesive.

Before I even talk about the characters, I HAVE to mention the bizarre choice to write present day chapters in 1st person POV and college flashback chapters in this strange, outline of a paper-esque 3rd person POV.
For example: “Reed is in the library. He’s supposed to be writing a paper for this year’s J-term class—a retrospective on food and culture.”
It reads like a plot outline. Or stage directions for a play? It’s so jarring on audio to switch to this writing style. Thankfully, those chapters are short because it’s a whole bunch of telling me things and not showing me anything (which happens the whole book, but is really highlighted here.)

The characters are so frustrating. Every single one.

Let me just….explain by character cause I don’t even know how to untangle the mess.

Ava: For someone that has spent a decade as the assistant manager of the ski resort and repeatedly tells us how much she loves it, she’s pretty gung ho to not question these new buyers on their glaringly obvious shadiness. When Reed, an actual businessman with an MBA comes in and starts asking big, important questions, she’s mad. Ma’am. These are questions you and Reed’s father should have been asking. Second of all, she’s hated Reed for a decade because he broke up with her after (SPOILER ALERT) she had a miscarriage in college. Alright. That’s fine. You’re allowed to be mad. Ya know what we don’t see? The breakup. Was he a jerk? Did he cuss you out? Did he do it a week after? A month? The day of? No one knows because it’s vaguely mentioned and never talked about. It’s built up to be this SUPER traumatic thing he did to her and it’s not elaborated as to why. Is it because she didn’t handle the miscarriage well? Didn’t know how to cope? Asked him to stay and he refused? We’ll never know because Sarina Bowen just….left it out and expected us to fill in the blanks. I’m going to ignore the fact that moving to his home and family ski resort was a weird choice. But it was weird. It’s drilled into our heads 90 times that she’s super smart, but where did I see that at? She just goes along with the terrible potential buyers and doesn’t ask questions until Reed shows up and goes “this is fishy”. Alright. Also, I know not one thing about her. She loves to ski and loves Reed. That’s….all I know.

Reed: actually the least frustrating of the characters. My dude needs therapy, but I actually liked him. Run of the mill, emotionally stunted MMC, but he was fine, I guess. Not my favorite MMC ever, but he was the character I least wanted to kick in the shin. Maybe don’t break up with your girlfriend after a miscarriage but ya know. He could have groveled more, but what is he groveling for exactly? We’re never told. Again, a character that needed a quality therapist. Lots of yelling in the last half in all caps when he didn’t exactly fight very hard to stop his dad from selling the resort.

Mark, Reed’s father and owner of the ski resort: I think I was supposed to feel bad for him? But I just wanted to kick him. This man lost his shit after his wife died and became a “mean drunk” and……is mad that his sons want nothing to do with him or the resort? Sir. Your children are traumatized and are allowed to feel that way. A newly happy marriage and ten years of sobriety doesn’t erase the fact that you neglected them and emotionally traumatized your sons. His whole reason for selling the ski resort is so he can retire and take Melody, his new wife, traveling. Can we….apologize to your traumatized children first? My guy didn’t care that his whole plan to sell was going to shaft everybody as long as he got his money and got to ride off into the sunset with Melody (who I actually liked so no hate to her). His small act of redemption in the last 10% wasn’t satisfactory and again: You traumatized your kids!!!!!!!!! I also don’t know what purpose him breaking 10 years (!!!!! Good for him) of sobriety served other than to make the bad guys look *extra* bad. But it was extremely contrived for angst sake and contributed nothing to the plot other than a vague “yeah he called his sponsor” moment. Which good on him for calling his sponsor. I’m all for redemption ARCs because addicts deserve happiness to, but this man wasn’t redeemed. Holding out hope for the next two books.

Ava’s friend Halley: my GOD. She acted like a high schooler with her petty attitude towards Reed. Just sell the man a damn drink, girl. I get riding for your besties. But they’re in their 30’s. Come on now.

There were so many plot lines going on ALL OVER the place and it was way too much for a 300 page book. Childhood trauma, miscarriage, selling of the resort, the underhanded businessman, the other brothers, Reed’s moms pottery (?), Mark’s addiction, Reed being a previous star level athlete. I needed a nap afterward.

This had a terrible habit of telling and not showing. Why did Reed and Ava love each other so passionately back in college? Don’t ask me. I know they boned a whole lot and ate pizza. That is it. That’s all we get.

This is only the second Sarina Bowen book I’ve read, so I’m going to chalk this one up to a fluke? I always hear good things about her books and I’m willing to try another one, but I did not like this book. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I hated it cause I’ve definitely read worse. However, I was so frustrated listening to it that I couldn’t enjoy it at all. I am still mad about those bizarrely written flashback scenes though.

This just…needed better editing. Or a more cohesive plot. Or better characterization for our main characters. Or…something. I don’t even know.

Audio narration was great! Andi Arndt and Sebastian York did a great job with….whatever this was supposed to be.

CW: miscarriage (historical), childhood neglect/emotional abuse (historical),

A Little Too Late is 1 of 3 books of the Madigan Mountain series. There are three brothers Reed, Weston, and Crew. This first book is about the eldest brother Reed and Ava who were college sweethearts. Reed and Ava went their separate way until Reed had to come home to deal with his family business. The last person he expected was to see Ava in flesh, working at said family business Madigan Mountain ski resort. Ava knew she would see Reed at some point but she was not prepare when he turned up after a decade. What the girl to do when she runs into her gorgeous ex? Drop her coffee, get defensive, and give him the “help quarter” for his welcome stay :)
LOL this second chance love story is too cute. I enjoy the brewing chemistry and the push and pull they have to each other especially they have to work together days in and out :) I love that Reed and Ava relationship is fun, fuzzy, steamy, and lighthearted. They fell back into each other life seamlessly as if time had not pass at all. I also love the snow capped mountain setting. I can just close my eyes and imagine the beauty of winter. Second cast of characters are pretty great too. Such a feel good story.
