A crumbling ceasefire gives way to assassination and abduction, leading Grant and his hand-selected team on a desperate rescue mission across hostile territory to save the royal heiress. Their path is fraught with danger. Treachery, political machinations, and ancient enemies lurk in the shadows, threatening to derail their quest. Can Grant overcome insurmountable odds to protect not only his StarTouched friends but also the future of an empire teetering on the brink of collapse? Arcane Captain is an epic fantasy tale where heroism, politics, and magic are woven into an electrifying story of sacrifice, bravery, and leadership. Packed with action and captivating political intrigue, this thrilling ride will leave you clinging to the edge of your seat until the very last page.
The book starts out well on a battlefield. I found that I enjoyed the main character. His magic and how he used it in combat was interesting and compelling. The rest of the story was a slog though. Just ends up being a fetch quest with too many extra names and side characters. There was an attempt to go for intrigue and plots that all felt flat to me when all a really wanted was to see the captain performing his job as a military combatant. Not a bad story but not for me.
The Arcane Company so called due to the fact that its officers have been "star touched" and have unique individual powers fights in a siege in the first couple of chapters. The majority of the book though is about what happens after this battle when the company leaders pursue kidnappers. It sounds like a good action filled yarn but it just did not seem to reach its potential. I enjoyed the book but not sure if I will read any of the other stories in the series.
Lots of action and intrigue. Plenty of battle sequences too. My first time enjoying this author's fast paced writing style. I thought the balance between heroes and brutal killers the main characters appear to be, thought provoking. Looking forward to the next. In the series.
For me this was a middle of the road read, it's not bad but it's not brilliant it's just a good read, yes the storyline is interesting and the characters quite well written and there's action and a little humour to keep you reading but it's not going to set the world on fire, Baz
