“If this world won’t let me have you, I’ll burn it down and create a world that will.” Shiloh Haven and Jake Osgood swear they will do anything for a chance at a life together—even if they have to burn the world down first. But when Shiloh is kidnapped, she finds herself in the middle of another deadly game. Her connection to the rebel organization, ROGUE, runs deep, and in Arcadia’s hands, she is a perfect weapon.
Arcadia has her.
ROGUE will do anything to get her back.
And Jake may be her only chance at survival.
As Jake and Shiloh are pulled further apart, Jake seeks to regain the Council’s trust and grow close to his enemies. But one wrong move, and it won’t just cost Jake and Shiloh their lives. It’ll cost ROGUE the best chance at destroying Arcadia, once and for all.
Right back into the fold with this book. Didnt feel like I missed a beat coming into the second book. Again, right from the beginning you have these amazing characters, and the story just takes you through this massive adventure not letting go. It flowed just like book one, and now Im sitting here going GIVE ME BOOK 3!
Holy cow- This book. I literally have no words. all I know is I’m SCREAMING & I NEED the next book IMMEDIATELY. The twists and turns this one brought. UGH honestly even better than the first. The DRAMA had me not wanting to put the book down. I’m so thankful to have been an ARC reader for this lovely book. Would’ve 100% bought this book on my own. !!all opinions are my own though. Don’t think because I was an ARC reader that means I’m saying it was amazing. It genuinely IS amazing.
Jake & Shiloh. Oof. All I’m going to say is you guys will be screeching.
MUST READ!! Not just one of them. YOU NEED THE WHOLE SERIES
I don't even know where to start. Typically I read a book & instantly move on to another. There's so many out there that even if I loved the book, I don't get impatient waiting for a sequel. I don't go crazy hyping a book. I just move on. This one tho. Lord help me.
I hype the first one CONSTANTLY!! My bookstagram probably had 20 Heresy themed posts & now this one is out...pub day is today & already I've read this book twice.
A sequel is oftentimes a reheated generic leftover version of the original. With Dissent, that's a BIG FAT NOPE. This book could 100% stand on it's own & still be a 5 star read.
The world building is so well done that I feel myself living it. The characters, new & old, are diverse, complex & so real. I can't stand some of them. Some I wanna shake some sense in to. Some I wanna snuggle up with. Some I wanna burn the world down for.
The relationships, prejudices, personalities & story line in Dissent are top notch. New characters feel familiar. Strong personalities get even stronger. Losses get more painful. Heartbreak bleeds off the page into me. Parts made me cry so hard I could barely see yet I could NOT stop reading.
Highly recommend this series for anyone that loves Hunger Games or any f'd up dystopian story with a strong found family storyline. If you love an underdog story & BADA$$ rebels fighting for acceptance, equality & most of all LOVE, you might be a Heretic and this series is definitely for you.
POV: you are the first review🤪 the author basically sent me the ARC of the ARC of this book and WOW I CANNOT BREATHE. Literally so much happened my brain is struggling to keep up. This book was definitely as good as the first. I need the next book but I keep reminding myself that this book isn’t even out yet😭😭
I enjoyed this book more than Heresy. There was so much deeper connection we have with the characters in this sequel. I definitely felt at times like I was on an emotional roller coaster ride with characters getting captured, not knowing how it was going to pan out for them or when the Elite was coming. Edge of the seat type of reading.
With more exposure to ROGUE, we saw how the history of it was established and the importance of Shiloh. She’s a symbol of hope, even if she doesn’t want to be. Nic’s trauma from the vault runs deep. I feel like this is so relatable - when we try to avoid something that pains us, we try to remain strong and it doesn’t do us any good. Sometimes we just need to face our trauma in order to overcome it. It’s okay not to be okay.
The key message throughout the book is love is such a powerful force. It drives us in a lot of actions we take, which can leave us with good experiences but also leads us into sticky situations. Every single character does what they think is best for the ones they love - even at the sacrifice of themselves. Even though Wallace was a minor character, my heart broke in that scene. I can’t even imagine how I would feel in that moment.
After Samuel took Jake to see the aftermath of that bombing, I understand why Jake is making the decisions he does. Maybe he can change Arcadia as councillor, though I’m not holding my breath as Beck is manipulative and seems to be holding the cards over everyone! Even though Silas is alive, he’s only there for her bidding. She’s the one character with true power.
I love all the side characters and the relationships we get to witness in their stories too. Everyone has intricacies that tie into each other and this is one of the few books, where even though there are so many side characters, you don’t get lost and we know all their personalities at the same time. It’s that well written!
Honestly, can’t wait to see what’s next for all the major players and the heresy they will commit.

A FANTASTIC read! If you enjoy a Dystopian narrative this book is for you. I highly recommend it. Campbell is an amazing writer.
The Heretic series has a slew of characters pushing back against the United Counsel and the Codex. This Codex outlines the clothes they wear, the length of an individual’s hair, who they will marry (betrothal does happen), the designation of what career path on will follow, how citizens should act, and how they should speak. The premise “All are equal”.
In book 1, Heresy, we are introduced to a menagerie of characters—those for and against the United Counsel and Codex, the history of Arcadia, the reason behind the creation of the Codex and the reason as to why things are the way they are. We witnessed love blossoming, relationships developing, friendships repaired, and life changes for a handful of students at Ardency. We see the harshness of Arcadia’s Codex system and the effect it has on the main characters. This book left me wanting more.
Campbell did not disappoint me with book 2-Dissent. Dissent reigns true in the ongoing narrative of Arcadia’s dystopian society. I AM ADDICTED-to the characters, narrative…the whole kit and kaboodle. I couldn’t put it down. So many scenes kept me on the edge of my seat and had my heart racing. I found myself wanting to jump ahead to find out what happened—I didn’t because I didn’t want to spoil the buildup. You never know who the main characters can trust.
In Dissent we learn of a family torn apart and unexpectedly reunited. There is a family whose loyalty to one another, and Arcadia is tested time and time again and at times failing miserably. A Counselor high on power, in every dystopian depiction there is always one. We get introduced to a group of ROGUE individuals who live outside the Codex and have created their own type of family. Most heart breaking is a love that is tested numerous times.
Shiloh, an orphan since the age of 6, lived in Haven House following the rules and staying unemotional dealing with others. She blossoms into a fierce individual dedicated to the safety of those she loves. She becomes a force to be reconned with and has no qualms with taking on the Council of Arcadia, especially Beck the longest running seat member, and burning it down.
Jake, the Prince of Arcadia, was born into the Council legacy and for the most part did as he pleased without consequences. He becomes a soldier of the cause-be it an outlier-helping ROGUE. His love for Shiloh makes him do daring and stupid things that could cost him the one person who is his “entire universe”. His end goal…”to burn the world down”.
Val the Haven sister Shiloh lost because of her anger with Shiloh and past event returns as her stalwart supporter. She lives with the secret-per Arcadia standards-of a forbidden love. Knowing that if she and Stefani are found out she will be put into a Prison Camp for the rest of her life. Val wants to “burn the whole mother-froqing place down”.
Stefani a daughter of Advocate Andreou pushes the boundary of conformity with her appearance and hacking skills. A friend of Shiloh and Jake she works with them and others to help those who are considered heretics.
There are many more well developed and portrayed characters that dragged me into this book and kept me wondering who could be trusted and what they would do next.
5 froqqing stars. This book was amazing, from the suspense, to the angst, to the Luca. I love how this was darker than the last one because I'm a little weirdo who loves to read about characters who get tortured. There are three exceptions to that, however; Nobody touches my Val, nobody touches my Shiloh, and nobody touches my Luca. I immediately fell in love with Luca, which nobody agrees with, sadly. Luca was by far the best new character, aside from Yousef. I love this series so much, and so does my whole family, to the point that blight, froq, and endsphere have become part of our everyday vocabulary. I adore CA Campbell's writing style, and I love her world-building. This series has everything that every dystopian should have, corrupt government, forbidden love, and a rebellion you can't help but want to be part of, yet it's so different. Other dystopian authors or just authors, in general, try to shy away from anything that can be deemed political propaganda, like religion and LGBTQ+ but for CA Campbell, her story would be incomplete without either. I love how characters don't have sloppy character development, like in other books, but instead, you can feel what they are going through like you ARE the character. I won't go into detail about these character developments because they are big plot points and I'd rather not have to hide the entire review because of spoilers.
“Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes A pair of star-crossed lovers…” – William Shakespeare
This series is absolutely explosive. It picks up with a love that you know is just going to destroy you as the protagonists have predestined paths. One of my favorite things about this installment is the turning point of maturity in the characters. They go from burning the world down to be with each other to fighting for hope to build a better world through their own hurt.
When I say this is a dystopian read, I mean there is a society in control and others fighting against it, there is constant turmoil, and so much distress for those not in power. Yet, in her writing, the author allows us to ease into this world and feel the anguish of the targets who have to been dragged by the will of the council. Our anger builds as the characters struggle and risk their life for freedom. Our heart breaks as the characters face harsh choices. Our hope grows at alliances found and formed. I cannot wait to see the challenges our star-crossed lovers will face on their paths to building a better world!
This is a must read for anyone that enjoys books with spitfire characters, alternative realities, and dystopian reads including Unchosen by Kathryn Blair, Switchers by Christopher Tallon, and the Straight Crimes by Matt Juhl.
After waiting for what feels like far too long, the second book in the Heretics Series is finally here!
The characters are exactly as memorable and lovable as I remember. Jake remains the gem that he always was, and Shiloh's character is taking on some amazing new dimensions in this book. Shiloh and Jake's love is still front and center in this book, but it also expands to explore relationships between the other characters. And I will say, it takes a very skilled kind of author to make me invested in a romance saga.
C.A. Campbell explores some very deep themes in this book - including LGBT issues - and she does not veer away from what these discriminated groups face. C.A. Campbell takes very much the approach that Margaret Atwood did when writing The Handmaid's Tale, in that most of the things we see taking place in Arcadia are things that can be pointed to as place somewhere in the real world at some point in history. It is a very daring approach, as human history is very ugly, but C.A. Campbell is by far talented enough to make it work.
I worked my way through the entire book over the course of staying home sick two days, and I am already DYING for book 3!
JK....I need to know how CA Campbell does it. How they write so that you forget you're reading, so that you forget you're not in the midst of the story itself, running from a terrifying dystopian government. How they perfectly balance the action and the romance, the angst and the hope, for such a phenomenal story that rips your heart out and refuses to give it back.
The continuation of this story was so perfect, and I can't explain how much I love the character development that happened in this book. From Jake to Val, there was so much going on with each and every person, but it never felt anything but effortless. The pieces aligned so well and every second of the book felt hand-crafted for the reader themselves.
If you haven't gotten your hands on this series yet....what are you even doing??
So much action and deepening to the plot in C.A. Campbell's sequel to Heresy, Dissent! The twists and turns continue as the cat and mouse game between a manipulative Elite and a smart 18 year old Shiloh attempt to outplay the other, though it's getting trickier for Shiloh to win without hurting the people she loves.
The confrontation between romance and the long game is the best part of this book, where someone's heart has to break for the sake of a long strategy. I am so invested in this series, I cannot wait until the third one comes out.
As was the first one, written well and paced really well, with more of a cliffhanger this time to leave us wanting more until the next installation.
If you enjoy YA dystopian fiction at all, these are a must read.
Ohhhh my god. This made me feel all the things. I was stressed. I was crying. I was cheering. Let me just say, Val & Stefani hold a place in my heart and I hate them(if you know, you know). I loved everything about this book and could visualize everything. The only thing keeping me from rating it 5 stars was I found myself getting distracted by other books. This deals with some heavy stuff and I just wasn’t in the best headspace for it, but it was still amazing. When I reread this at a later date, I may rate higher. I can’t wait to read the next book and see how this story plays out!
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
The absolute worse part about reading a series as it is still being published is having to wait for the next book. I received this as an ARC and it was a first time in a while that I was looking forward to continuing on in a series and now I have to wait for the third book to be released.
One thing that I dislike that carries over from the first book is they way that they swear. It just doesn’t seem natural even though it is the way that at least the younger characters would have been doing it their whole lives. That could be just real life thinking bleeding in while I’m reading, but it is still jarring.
Okay, okay. I know my review of book 1 wasn't an overwhelming endorsement (just a regular endorsement) BUT this book you absolutely HAVE to read.
I love the plot development and literally all of the characters. I usually have a hard time connecting if their are too many perspectives going on but I honestly fell in love with everyone in this book. By the last ~15% of the book, I was crying with almost every page turn.
The CLIFF HANGER! I literally cannot wait for the next book. I need it right now. What happens with Shiloh and Luca and Jake??????? Are Stefani and Val ever going to be reunited? What about the baby?
Also, I am going to miss Wallace.

Heresy pulls you in - Dissent keeps you there. This book blew me away. Perfect cross of Handmaids Tale The Giver and Hunger Games with just the right amount of romance to make this the perfect dystopian YA novel. CA Campbell’s writing style brings you into the stories and understand the characters to truly keep you hooked! This book was hard to put down and I frequently found myself up way too late. Great for Adults and Young Adults that have a love for Dystopian Novels with romance and action. Just don’t forget to breathe because there are scenes that will have you in the throes of action rooting for your favorites and some of the characters just might surprise you!
Wow.. honestly I’m surprised that I’m still surprised by C. A. Campbell’s series. Dissent was the perfect sequel to the first book in the series. We continue to follow Shiloh and Jake as they navigate their relationship through Arcadia’s strict rules and ROGUE’s fight for freedom. We face more betrayals and more secrets. We see broken hearts and die hard love. We truly are and experience the struggles of a changed world. Every chapter was extremely well written. The ending sets up the next book perfectly. I cannot say enough good things about this series.
This story is so great on so many levels. It is such a journey to experience and had me on an emotional roller coaster the whole time!! There is such a deep story here that I feel is important for everyone to read and experience. (And it is exactly that…an experience) I am so invested in this world and all the people in it. I feel happy when they are happy and sad when they are sad and excited with all the action and drama throughout. Thank you for writing Shiloh and Jake’s story and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
I hate this book. With every fiber of my being. I especially hate the fact that I have to wait so long to find out where this story is going. It has been so long since I have been so emotionally invested in a story…and that’s where I am. I’ve laughed in parts, and sobbed my eyes out in others. This story line lured me in with the first book and I could not stop reading the second until I finished. That says a lot since I’m generally in bed by 9. Simply put, there aren’t enough words for me to do this book justice.
I said it before and I will say it again. Anyone looking for a good dystopian YA novel needs to read this series. This book took the amazing potential that you saw in the first book and made it even better. The genuine connection that the author manages to build between the reader and the characters is so much more real and fleshed out in the story and the story itself manages to find a way to latch on to your soul and refuse to let go. Basically read this book cuz I need to talk to more people about it while I eagerly await for the next one in the series.
If you like the Hunger Games you will love this series! Dissent picks up right where Heresy left us. This was a great continuation of Jake and Shiloh's story of young love and their struggles to right the wrongs of their world. They continue to meet multiple challenges and there are questions of betrayal that arise between the two of them when they are separated. This was quite the roller coaster ride with lots of new information and drama that keeps you turning those pages. I can't wait to see where this story goes in the next installment!
I was able to read Dissent as part of an ARC program. I was very excited to get to have this opportunity as I loved the first book in the Heretics Saga. I had high expectations for this book and it did not disappoint. The characters are well developed and their characters arcs are fulfilling. While there are many "twists" that are expected/easily guessed, the way they come to be are unique and surprising. I had a hard time putting Dissent down. It was a fantastic read that leaves me excited to see what comes next!
I think with the current gen0cide happening in Gaza books like this are especially necessary. The parallels are uncanny when you think about them, & while Campbell hasn't written anything near as atrocities as what the IDF is doing, she is able to show the reality behind a lying government that pretends to be for the ppl but really isn't.
This book was comforting to read in this time as an Arab. It gives me hope in a strange way. Because as systematic, & as bad as the losses are, there is still dissent... & there is a spark that will burn it all down.
Omg.. hunger games all over again. Lovers to enemies. Betrayal. Continuous action. Have you on the edge the whole time your reading. Couldn't help but fall in love with all the characters all over again and new ones. Campbell did an amazing job on this book. I loved it. I can't wait for the next book and she what shiloh does next.
I got this book for as an ARC, in exchange for an honest review.
Just like the Heresy (the first book in the series), this book gave me chills. The creepiness of the world kept following me around long after I put the book down. One thing I really enjoyed about this novel is how the stakes kept rising, making it more and more difficult to put down!
Just like Heresy, this book is definitely for fans of dystopian fantasy!
I was sent Dissent as an ARC. I really love this series and was excited to read the second book. However, I’m not a huge fan of electronic books so it took me forever to get into. But it was worth the struggle with the ebook.
Dissent advances the story of Shiloh. I enjoyed watching her grow and learn about her new family. The action helped bring that dystopian world together. Rooting for all the members of ROGUE to succeed.
I can’t wait for book 3 to find out what happens next.
Dissent is gasoline. And a single spark can set the world on fire.
CA Campbell does such a wonderful job of storytelling. The reader can feel the authors own trails and pain written within the lines of the book. Dissent does a great job at moving the story line along while also growing the characters and giving minor details that make the readers feel their pain.
My only suggestion is to make the next book come out sooner so that I can know what happens!
*Received as an ARC reader. This was a really enjoyable second book to the series! It was really good, and I still stand by what I said for the first book that individuals who liked series such as the Chemical Gardens, Delirium, and Divergent would like this series. This book had much better pacing than the first book for me and was much easier to get into. If YA Dystopian Lit is your thing I would highly recommend this book for you.
I recorded this audiobook during a really transitional period of life. House shopping, Buying, and moving. I remember feeling terrible that it took so long, but this amazing author was so kind and encouraging and patient.
Not all authors like a lot of collaboration on their audiobooks, but CA Campbell is incredibly invested in her characters. And she should be because they are rich and broken and beautiful. We collaborated on each voice and it was incredible. Even months after this audiobook has released I still think of them.
Also good news, the audio for book one just won FIRST PLACE at Bookfest!
Holy cow!! I’ve read tons of good books but this one is amazing!! Every other scene sent shivers up my spine. The found family dynamic between Shiloh, Jake, Stefani, Val and Nic is one of the best I’ve read to date. The whole book i was on the edge of my seat waiting for the next scene would play out. I honestly can’t wait for the next one to come out. Definitely recommend
