Tell me if I'm crazy but the whole marketing of this book, from the cover to the synopsis to actual paragraphs inside the book pointed in a smutty romance direction. But it wasn't that at all? The romance was reaaaaaaally slow burn to the point that I got bored, and then when it came to them actually doing something interesting, the scene was cut off and suddenly it was the next morning. BIG NO FROM ME.
There is a lot of build up for their relationship, but at the same time I felt like I was getting nothing until the last chapters, and the last 20% felt so rushed.
The romance was pretty wholesome and cute and I was rooting for them to get together throughout the whole book. But at some point you get tired of rooting and you just want them together god damn lol.
And lastly, as a lesbian, the way queer women and queerness in general were represented in this book felt wrong. I had a few issues with it and the wording of some thoughts and dialogues were icky.
I enjoyed some parts, yes, but it didn't feel like a full fleshed story and it had severe pacing issues.
It was okay. Not a lot of plot, too much dialogue, and weird phrases that kept getting repeated. Both leads were bumping their shoulders all the time and throwing their head back in laughter A LOT. Like pls, how are they not bruised
This novel was “fine”. I enjoyed reading it, but it was underwhelming, strange at times, and there were lots of bits that were disappointing. I had a hard time coming up with a rating but settled on 3-stars because it was entertaining and without any serious issues. I loved the found family that Avery had with her three foster sisters, and there were a lot of cute moments throughout the novel. This firmly checks the HEA box.
My issues: -The relationship (the core of the novel) was rushed and overall just strange. It was certainly underdeveloped, given what we saw on the page. The characters DID work well together but the story still fell down on the details. I didn’t connect with Robin at the beginning talking about how she “cares soooo much” about Avery even though they had interacted approximately three times and barely talked to each other. It felt forced. The whole relationship lacked believability; we were told a lot more than we were shown. -The whole novel was rushed and had strange pacing issues. There were a lot of tangents that didn’t go anywhere and therefore didn’t really add to the story. A lot of the big developments were overly convenient and came out of nowhere (and not in a satisfying way). Characters had wild changes of opinion off page between scenes. -Jade (similar to above). The whole character of Jade felt unresolved and like a cheat. They spent so much time discussing the mystery of this character, how she gets money, how she lives, how she spends her days, hinting at unresolved issues………and then there is zero payoff. It felt like the author was building to something, like this would tie into the plot in some way, yet in the end there was nothing. Very unsatisfying. -Novels don’t require explicit sex scenes (obviously), however this one really led the reader to believe that we would get them and then did not deliver. Considering how much the novel focused on this topic (Robin was very thirsty, it was a primary character motivation!) it was a strange choice. -Some of the writing and choices were strange and……icky? Particularly with some of the queer representation and how the topic was handled. One character was particularly insistent on throwing out the “gold star lesbian” phrase as much as possible. Avery’s sexuality was very poorly explored or explained, and it was supposed to be a major theme of the novel. -I just didn’t love the writing. I can’t pick out what it was specifically, but it just didn’t resonate with me.
There are times when I like the first time loving a woman tropes. This one is combined with an age gap. This time it was the younger woman that had not ever been with a woman before. It was an interesting plot how the two women came into each other’s lives.
You can’t help but love Avery and the life in which she lived prior to meeting Robin. It is also a typical poor girl meets rich woman. Feelings develop slowly and an awakening occurs. There are no plot twists or even any angst. Their relationship just grows at a natural pace. They have long intimate dialogues at times seem a bit stilted, but they do speak from the heart and a place of vulnerability a lot. Avery has very interesting friends that are more like family.
It is not the deepest and most engaging story. It is slightly boring and slow. I took many breaks from the story, but still read it in a day. Most will enjoy the read, even if it is not the most riveting or the best story telling pace.
”You make me want to go out into the world and be brave, knowing that I always have a home to come to. And for the first time, that home is not a physical place. It’s you.”
4 stars. I love ex’s mom romances and while this wasn’t the best one that I’ve read it was still so good. It’s a sweet and quiet romance and it’s low on the angst.
I liked both main characters a lot. Avery was set to marry Robin’s son Zach but he bailed on her. Robin steps up and takes Avery in as Zach leaving her left her homeless and without a job. I liked getting to know both women. Avery’s back story was sad and I loved the way Robin helped her navigate dealing with those childhood traumas. It was tender and some of my favorite moments of this book. The romance was great as well as I thought they had wonderful chemistry. The ending was so adorable. My only gripes that I had with this book was that some of the writing was a bit stilted, especially the dialogue. That mainly happened when Avery was hanging out her besties but other than that I thought this was a solid read.
If you are addicted to HEA, then this novel is for you. I gave it 5 stars, not so much for creativity (it was a very sweet but not very challenging story) since even the bad characters all have redeeming qualities, but more for the quality of expression and composition, two attributes that so many FF novels lack. Enjoy this book on a cozy evening with a cup of coco. I have to add this last question though (if you read this novel you will know why I am adding it… just WTF does Jade do for a living???! )
I did not finish this one. The writing is all right, but I struggled with the characters. They were both too perfect in some ways, and then acted really dumb in others. Peterson tried to make it less of an eyebrow raiser to have the son not being close or even really raised by his mother, but I still had issues with some aspects of it. Like the instant attraction thing rubbed me the wrong way. It's also always so physical at first (that is fair) but why do people then go like, you're the love of my life! When all they really know about the other is how they look and some small talk?
What a lovely book!! Chloe gifted us with an exceptionally well written romance between two incredible leading women. I adored Robin's character and how thoughtful, kind, and realistically layered she was. I especially loved how smoothly their relationship moved forward and didn't repeatedly go back and forth. I don't know what the author's plans are, but it'd be amazing to have stories starring Amber, Nicole, and Jade in the future!
The story is very sweet and Robin and Avery are perfect for each other. The only part I didn’t like was Zach’s reason for treating Robin the way he did. Maybe it’s just me but it felt forced and not believable. I think the author was trying to make Zach less of a bad person which I think is unnecessary. Overall a nice read.
Thank you Chloe Peterson. I love this romance of yours, this is a real love story with Avery and Robin as they share their journey with their friends. It's full of ups and downs like in real life. These characters feel real all the way and the dialogues are superbly written, especially Avery and Chloe's words of love.
Wow another amazing storyline I loved the main characters their individual journey was described with perfection on top of their journey through everything to be together was incredibly definitely worth a read congratulations
I have to say I liked the story and it was great in most aspects however the pacing felt a little weird to me . It seemed in some places that it rushed forwards and then other times really slowed down. Still worth a read.
This book was set up to be spicy—the cover alone made it seem that way. They had very overt sexual references and built up this tension and then it was a fade to black. Very disappointed. The story was pretty good overall but was incredibly rushed at the end.
I love everything by this author. It's laugh out loud funny, heartfelt, and relatable. The characters are amazing. Can't wait to read all of her books.
Anyway, I loved this. It was short, thankfully, as I worked all day and was not desirous of reading a full book (as opposed to a novella) today. And wow was this a stellar choice!! The plot is nonexistent, but the love the fluff and romance between the leads, is so over-the-top cute that I could hardly stop smiling throughout!! This is what I want to read: light romances with excellent communicators!!
EDIT 21 February 2023: I still love this. It is incredibly cheesy and I spent most of it grinning. The lengthy paragraphs of dialogue and the speed with which Avery and Robin fall for one another matter not; I just find this so cute!!!
