I received a free audio copy from Tantor Audio and am voluntarily reviewing it.

Hostile Taco-ver caught my eye as it's a food themed cozy mystery and I liked the idea of reading about a main character running a taco food truck. This was a fun book to listen to and I enjoyed it, but also felt like it tried to pack a bit too much in a relatively short read that's the first book in a new series and some parts felt a bit rushed or underdeveloped because of that. The food truck theme was fun and I enjoyed seeing Billie find a new life on Sea Glass island.

Hostile Taco-ver follows Billie as she makes the move to Sea Glass island where her late grandmother left her an inheritance that contains a fleet of food trucks. Her grandmother set everything up in such a way to make things easy for Billie, but Billie still has to go there and claim it and get used to all of it. I liked seeing her make a new start at the island and figure out how to run the food truck business.

The mystery almost felt secondary to the plot of Billie making her new start on the island and the competition for who gets to run the taco food truck. The murder actually has happened before the story starts and even happened on the mainland. I didn't really feel invested in it as Billie didn't really seem as involved in it either at the start. She does slowly get pulled in the mystery as she finds out the victim was supposed to be one of her candidates for her food trucks and she wonders whether one of her current candidates might be the murder.

I have to admit I was more invested in the daily life stuff and the food aspect than the mystery, but I did enjoy seeing it all play out. I would've liked the mystery to be a bigger part of the plot so I was more invested in it, but at the same time I liked reading about the daily life stuff and would be sad to have less of that. The ending felt a bit rushed and I was a bit disappointed Billie wasn't the one to solve it, but with the way she wasn't fully the one investigating either it also didn't feel as annoying as it might otherwise be. I liked how it made sense who the murderer was and how everything fell on it's place.

I liked the theme of the food truck and reading about Billie and the other characters on the island. I wish we had seen more of the actual food truck work, but with Billie adapting to her new life, the competition for who gets to run the food truck and the mystery I felt the actual food and food truck weren't as big of a part of the book as I might've liked. Nevertheless I think it made for a fun theme and I am planning to continue the series.

While I liked Billie, there were some scenes where she annoyed me, especially when interacting with Asher. I disliked how argumentative Asher and Billie both got every time they talked, they both jumped to conclusions and were argumentative instead of communicative and I just didn't like how they interacted. With the way the ending leaves things I hope the next book will have less of that. Besides those interactions with Asher I liked reading about Billie and enjoyed the way she interacted with the other characters and found her way with her new business and life on the island.

I liked the narrator for this book, she was a new to me narrator. There was almost no adjustment period and I easily got into the story. I liked the different voices the narrator did for the different characters and could keep them apart well thanks to that. It was pleasant to listen to and I hope the rest of the series gets made into audio too so I can listen to them.

To summarize: I enjoyed this book. It has a fun set up with Billie inheriting a food truck business and moving to the island to run it. I liked reading about Billie and her finding her way on the island, a fresh start for her and a new business. I did feel the book tried to fit a bit too much into a relatively short book and the book could feel a bit rushed in a few spots, but mostly some parts like the mystery felt a bit underdeveloped to me. I liked the daily life and food truck parts of the book, but the mystery didn't hook me as much. The murder already has taken place before the start of the book and I felt like Billie wasn't as invested in the mystery at first which made it hard for me to get invested. She slowly becomes more involved and I liked seeing how it all played out. Billie was a likable main character and I enjoyed reading about her. I didn't like how Asher and Billie were super argumentative with each other for most of the book, but I have hopes that will be resolved in the next book. I liked the narrator for this audiobook and found it pleasant to listen to.

sorry, I just refuse to believe that anyone would commit actual murder for the opportunity to work at a taco truck

Fast paced introduction to a cozy series of food truck themed mysteries, HOSTILE TACO-VER, is a good time.

For such a plot simple mystery, the “who dunnit” was well veiled and held until the last 15% of the story. My expectations were surprisingly surpassed!

Author, Gretchen Allen, is laying the foundation for this 12 book series and providing the first murder, (or 3), along with a few additional mysteries that I suspect will take multiple volumes to unfold.

What did Billie’s grandmother have in mind for her beyond the 12 food trucks? How many more surprises are there? How much money is involved? Is Asher friend or foe? So many more questions…

For sure, the book can be read as a standalone. It’s perfectly clean, no foul language, sexual content or descriptive violence. Your 12 year olds will have a good time, if they enjoy light mysteries.

If you enjoy series reading, this one should be read in order for the best enjoyment and to maximize character development and secondary plot continuity. Mangia📚

I am not sure about this series. At one point, I paused listening and came to Goodreads to check to see if it was an actual mystery or just a cozy romance that was taking forever to get somewhere. This was at the 48% mark in the book, no one had died yet and there was no seemingly "someone is going to die" feel.

The main character is coming across as petulant and immature ...or I am just getting old and annoyed with 30 somethings acting like this. Could be either or both.

I also allow for the fact that the voice actor reading it put an extra tone to the characters that just came across very middle school BS with the way it was read and perhaps in just reading words it would not have come across that way.

I finished the slog through it and finally someone died but it was wrapped up SO fast that it seemed almost like the author realized they needed a murder and solution towards the end so tossed one in real quick to wrap it up.

I have a four hour commute a day so I really have to detest a series to abandon it. I will give this one another chance with #2 because maybe the series improves. It's a traffic time killer if everything else you want to listen to is on hold and you have this or the news or are not in the mood for music. But, it was not one I'd recommend to my book friends.

Hostile Taco-ver is the first book in a brand-new cozy mystery series by Gretchen Allen.
I love this author and was really excited to hear she had a new series coming out!

Billie is the main character and has just inherited her grandmother's food truck business in Sea Glass Island, Florida. Only problem is none of the trucks work and she doesn't have a manager.

She uses the towns culinary school to find a manager in a competition of sorts.
Can we talk about the Name of her food truck "Taco the Town" LOVE IT!

When one of the contestants turns up murdered Billie investigates to try and save her food truck business before it even starts.

I absolutely LOVED this culinary cozy mystery.

The characters are well written, funny and the food left my mouth watering.

But the mystery kept me guessing until the very end.

I can't wait for the next book in this series!! YUM!

This was a good starting book for a what sounds like a fun new series. I really liked Billie from the get-go and was proud of her when she actually took charge and told her job candidates how things were gonna go, meaning no fighting and nonsense like they'd do on a reality show. I knew from the early bickering between her and Asher that she'd have to eventually win him over, but in a way I could see his side too. He'd been in charge there for so long it was super hard for him to let go and share.

I really liked Rhonda who'd been Grandma Adeline's good friend and who took Billie under her wing after the murder. I loved how Billie wanted her new friends to be a true work family and have a meal together which was how the explanation of everything was done at the end. I did read the blurb for the next book and can't wait to see what the second food truck's like-it sounds like it's right up my alley though! I'll be grabbing that one on KU as soon as it comes out.

This was just cute. I am obsessed with food trucks...in spite of the cost of eating at one. Billie Halifax has inherited a fleet of food trucks from her grandmother and is moving to Sea Grass Island in Florida to start her new adventure in life. So far her biggest challenge has been trying to drive across the bridge to get there and she failed that test, having to hire someone to get her there. But within a little more than 24 hours, she has a place to live, a newly renovated truck for selling Mexican food, some tenuous friendships (?) and a dead body. Whew...that's a lot but she's still striving for success by the end of the book. Really, just a small town cozy and it looks like there's a book in the series for each truck that she inherited...so it may get old...but this was just a fun, quick read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This book has such a cute title that I just had to read it. Thirty-three year old Billie Halifax has inherited twelve food trucks from her late grandmother, Adeline Lynch. They are located off the Southwest coast of Florida on Sea Glass Island. Transitioning to her new life there involves getting along with the commissary kitchen manager Asher Scanlan and choosing one of three recent graduates of Mainland Culinary School to run the taco truck. When the lone male applying to work for her, Topher Donovan, is found dead, Billie wonders if one of the women--Mari Castile or Rebecca Swanson, could be the killer. I think Billie is a likable character and her adventures as a food truck owner will make for fun reading.

The first in an excellent series

Billie learns she has inherited a fleet of food trucks that need repair and part of a commissary on the island. She decides to pack up and leave her home in New England and move to Florida. She arrives to find an ornery co owner of the commissary. No sooner than she arrives and the problems start and she must get her first truck, a taco food truck, launched and a manager hired. The manager candidates are fighting and then one ends up dead. Lots of intrigue and a surprise ending. It does a great job laying out the cast of characters and setting the stage for the future books. A fun read.

Cute story and book title and I would love to know more about Sea Glass Island. It sounds nice.
I liked the food truck angle and the food competition. But thought the story focused more on her arrival to the island, which is fine, but did not delve too much into the murders. It seemed to wrap up too quickly.

Billie inherits her grandmother's fleet of food trucks. And partial ownership of a food commissary. She meets Asher who is in debt to her grandmother and pretty much has been running the grounds and let's just say they do not hit it off right away.

One of the food truck competitors is murdered and there are many suspects. Will Billie be able to save her grandmother's legacy?

Seaglass Island, here comes Billie!

Billie’s Grandmother Adeline has left her an inheritance, including money and a bunch of food trucks (all but one of which need a complete makeover) one turned into a taco truck. So she heads to Seaglass Island off the SW coast of Florida. Her first challenge is to get across the Bridge to Nowhere, which she finally solves by getting a tow truck to tow her car across! Adeline also arranged for three candidates, Becky, Topher and Mari, from the culinary school to interview with her to run them. This is a fun book to read and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Food truck background
(Allegedly) spunky female MC
Might make you hungry

I really really REALLY wanted to like this book but I didn't. The premise had a lot going for it - food trucks, an island, a woman looking to rebuild! - but the execution fell flat. I did not care if the MC succeed - at one point I actively was hoping she'd fail. I also didn't like the quasi romance they were trying to shoehorn in -

First time reading this author

Very fast paced. Good story and likeable characters. Billie inherits a fleet of food trucks. She must deal with moving to a new home, setting up her new business, people not wanting her there and murder. The ending was a little confusing. But overall a really good read

Amazing read. I can’t wait to read the rest of her food truck stories & see how relationships are built. The tiny homes are also a plus. I would recommend this if you like mysteries and building a new business.

A must to read if you like mysteries and building a new business while living in a tiny home on the fair grounds.

Quite enjoyable

It started off a little slow for me but then picked up to a better pace. There were quite a number of characters to follow but it wasn't too bad. I look forward to seeing where the next adventure takes us. 😊

Island Culinary Cozy

Ms. Allen's premise of a young woman inheriting what appears to be a food truck empire is different. She plots the mystery and gives us a sleuth with her own human issues to make a fast moving intrigue

I did enjoy the book, but it felt rushed. The mystery especially felt underdeveloped. I wish she had carried on the story a little bit longer, and it's been a little bit more time developing the plot. However, it was a cute idea for a story and I did enjoy it.

A Very Hostile Beginning

In the beginning I wasn't sure that anyone would be able to make this Taco Truck venture work out. And I'm still not sure, but Billie is. I'm on to more fun in the next book.

I found it an enjoyable quick read/listen. the main characters are likable. I don't think it was possible to identify the killer until the very end due to information not being made available to the reader.... but I don't mind that.

This story starts with a fantastic character quirk, giving me high hopes for a great story. Sadly, the pacing isn't up to that fast start, and the protagonist isn't the most likable. Still, there's enough here to try the next book.
