"A must-buy where Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander is popular.” ―Library Journal From the glitz of LA to the mists of Scotland. Is it true love for Willa or just a Highland fling? When the Big C takes her best friend too soon, Willa Jenkins struggles to recapture the joy in her life, and all she wants is to get away from LA’s glitzy party circuit. But superfan Valentina had other plans. For her final, wickedly funny act, she’s packing her bestie off on a two-week Outlander -themed experience at Balcraigie Castle, Scotland. Expecting a couple of weeks with Valentina’s hot brother Gabe, Willa gets more than she bargained for when she’s put to work doing actual , real-life farm work. Not only that, but to get the ‘full’ experience, she’s paired up with the irritating―and irritatingly sexy―Finn, with whom she will pose as fake husband and wife for the next two weeks. Willa despairs of Valentina’s terrible trick. But then she makes a discovery. Finn’s family might just lose the castle if they can’t make the experience worthwhile for the other attendees. The stakes are high, but as the days pass and the fake marriage she signed up for starts to feel all too real, could Willa be in for a prize of a different kind…love?

3⭐
Genre ~ women's fiction
Publication date ~ June 21, 2023
Page Count ~ 365
Audio length ~ 10 hours 48 minutes
Narrators ~ Amanda Ronconi, John Lane
POV ~ dual 3rd
Featuring ~ off screen loss of friend from cancer, long chapters, celebrity name drop, slow burn, insta~loveish, no steamage

Valentina leaves a 2 week Outlander experience in Scotland to her bff, Willa, and brother, Gabe in her will. They won't find love with each other, but a lifelong friendship bond.

Most likable points for me:
~ why Val sent these two strangers to Scotland together
~ Willa and Finn's meet cute at the airport
~ all of the people on the immersion trip were fun in their own way
~ how so many people came together to help save the far-um
~ I did appreciate the author's note stating this was semi autobiographical. Since her husband is Scottish I felt she had a good knowledge of the way of the land.

For most of the book Willa was not very likable. If you didn't know she worked in the Hollywood scene you'd know it based on all the celebrity name drops ~ from Ben to Matt to The Rock. She was downright mean at times and I never really warmed up to her.

Finn was adorable and I wish he had more chapters. He was more likable with his sad story and perhaps the book wouldn't have felt so long if we heard more from him. I wouldn't have minded being able to see him chop firewood in his kilt either.

Overall, I never really felt a connection or chemistry between them and don't understand how they fell for each other so quickly. There wasn't an abundance of interaction between them and she seemed to get sidetracked a lot by her phone buzzing in her bosom because her job was everything to her. No communication 3rd act break up was exactly what I expected based on how Willa was acting. I liked the last chapter well enough, but could have went for a little more guest interaction since they were a big part of the whole Scotland experience.

Side note ~ I know Valentina's death was the whole reason for this plot, but I wish we had met her when she was alive. She seemed like she'd be a delight to have around.

The never-ever-romantic got romantic! What’s that thing in the second half?! I feel betrayed. The good kind of course if there’s one.

This is such a dramatic yet kind of comforting romance read and I say it’s perfect for the spring!

I say it would be the perfect time to read it too when it comes out this summer. (I agree the cover is a bit underwhelming though!)

This is the story of a young woman who got hurt (well, betrayed) she leaves her glamorous overwhelming life at LA. Willa is trying her best to be herself and make herself happier but she’s not getting any good at it. Her bestie steps in and fixes something she cannot deny. Well, she’s gotten into a fake marriage. And let’s see if this turns into something we would all want them to be together. We all know what I mean. Heck!

The ending is so wholesome. I love the romance. I love the chemistry. I love the vibes.

Well, the first half got a little too dramatic for me. Well, it’s meant to be. But the second half is everything!

Thank you, Amazon Publishing UK, for the advance reading copy.

Fantastic for Outlander fans like myself! This was a heartfelt and fun romance that sees Willa traveling to Scotland to fulfill her dead best friend's last wishes. Tasked with participating in an all-out authentic "Outlander" experience, Willa finds herself stuck doing actual farm work and getting paired up with a grumpy (but sexy) Finn who is trying to save his family's working farm. Great on audio and recommended if you enjoyed Ruby Spencer's Whisky year or Whisky business by Elliot Fletcher. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review.

PS the grand gesture at the end was EPIC! I loved it so much!!

Okay, so when I first read the synopsis for this book, I knew I had to read it since I am going on my Outlander tour in July. Nothing quite so immersive as this one, I mean I won’t be wearing the costumes, just normal clothing, but still, this book was the perfect read as I prepared to go on my trip. And by the end I really was even more excited for my trip!

It was fun to see Willa’s life before she headed to Scotland, all the little celebrity interviews and such were funny. The other characters in her life, and those she met along the way in this story were great. First there was Gabe, her best friend’s brother, who was also being sent on the Outlander experience. The reason that she ends up more into Finn, the hot Scot, was a bit of a surprise, but one that played out well in the storyline.

Then there were all the other people who had signed up for the experience. Their love of the tv show was perfect, and seeing how Wilma had to try to know what she was talking about was fun. In all honesty, I’m not sure I’d sign up for what they ended up doing, I mean, they were basically running a farm, something that would be pretty close to what the people did day to day in the show, well, not all of them, but through some of the seasons and some of the people. Now there was one part where one of the characters mentioned that she was looking for her own Jamie, had even kind of run off from her fiance for this trip because she wasn’t sure if he was perfect enough for her. And the way the other characters explained to her that Jamie wasn’t real, he was fiction, there was no perfect man like that, love was more than just the perfection of that character. That was great.

Throughout the story there was a lot of miscommunication between Finn and Willa, and at times it was a bit frustrating. Especially when there were so many times that the two of them seemed to know just how to connect with the other one, saving the farm, relating to family issues, etc. And the story did seem a little long at times, like maybe some things could have been left out, or not gone on for as long. But the way the story ended, with the grand gesture, and Willa figuring out what she really wanted, with a little help from The Rock, was perfect. And I loved all the extra at the end, as well as the epilogue. I also really liked the author’s note at the end, definitely a lot of fun.

And even with the little discussion about how there is no real Jamie Fraser, I still wish I could meet my own Scottish hero in a kilt when I go on my Outlander tour in a few weeks.

Scotlander was a fun, adventurous and cute romcom.

Willa looses her best friend Valentina to cancer and she has been really struggling with such a huge loss, plus has been super stressed at work. When Willa gets called in to read Valentina's will she realizes that Valentina's super hot brother Gabe is there and Valentina's last wish is that they both go on a trip to Scotland to complete an Outlander experience.

While they are in Scotland they get immersed in the experience and both are assigned to partners, Willa gets paired up with Finn- a very sexy local - and they put them right to work. During all of this work, Willa comes to find out that Finn's family is actually struggling and they might lose everything if they can't make this Outlander style experience a success.

The backstory of how they got to Scotland was really well done, and the character development throughout for all characters was incredible. The banter between Willa and the memory of her best friend Valentina and how she assumed she would react to everything she was doing was funny and so relatable. While reading the book, I felt as if I was part of their friendship and I loved all the little moments/details the author described regarding their friendship.

I really enjoyed the book, but I did wish it had a bit more spice and that the ending wasn't so rushed. I feel like an epilogue would have been great to show what was happening 6 months or a year later. Overall, it was a great book and I recommend it especially if you are looking for a fun, quick read with some romance and very little spice.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

I really wanted to love this book, especially as I was buddy reading it with one of my besties. But it just wasn’t to be. I struggled to connect with the characters & found the writing style a little jarring.
I ended up stopping at 60% as it just wasn’t for me!

so much Fun!

Great characters in interesting situations, in a gorgeous land with great accents! If you like the Outlander series, if you love Scotland, I’m pretty sure you will enjoy this book! I had a lot of laughs, some tears, but mostly enjoyment pure and simple! I even loved the authors notes at the end!

Willa Jenkins is living in LA as a tv celeb news producer and deeply grieving the loss of her best friend. When the will is read, she finds out that Val’s last wishes was to send Willa on a two week immersive Outlander adventure, which Willa doesn’t understand because she wasn’t a fan of the show or the books, but Val was, so she goes along with it since it was her final wish for her. Along with this, Val’s long lost brother is also gifted the same thing. Willa wonders if Val is trying to set them up from the great beyond, or just trying to give them each someone to comfort the other in their grief. Willa never really knew the whole story as to why Gabe was estranged from Val and the family, but soon learned once they landed in Scotland that his heart already belonged to someone there, from his past.
Willa can’t figure out what’s she’s doing in Scotland but as she’s paired up with hot yet grumpy Finn, the owner of the crumbling castle the experience is taking place at, she can’t help but wonder if Val knew more than she let on. If only Willa would let her guard down and not worry so much about her life in LA and see what’s right in front of her…

The cover and title of this book drew me in as soon as I saw it, and when I read the blurb, I HAD to read it!

Glamorous LA celeb interviewer, Willa, is packed off to Scotland for an Outlander-themed break as requested in her best friend's will, who has just sadly died from cancer and left a massive hole in Willa's heart. Oh, and her best friend's hot brother has to go with her too. Hell yes, gimme gimme gimme!

I absolutely devoured this. It was pretty fast-paced, the concept was original and heartfelt, the dialogue felt very natural, clever use of words, and the writing flowed really well.

I think this would work so well as a film, especially the last third of the book, I could see it so clearly in my mind! This book really deserves to be a smash hit.

So glad I picked this one up on Netgalley, thanks to them and the publisher for the chance to read this in return for an honest review.

First of all, I've been an Outlander superfan since I read Diana Gabaldon's first book in the series 30+ years ago.

And so, when I saw Sheila McClure's Scotlander was based loosely on one of my favorite books of all time, well, I had to give it a go. In fact, I would book an Outlander immersive Scottish experience in a minute because I also fell in love with Scotland. Ms. McClure only confirmed my need to see the beautiful countryside with its moving history and hardworking people.

I also had a bout with cancer last year and understand Willa's best friend, Valentina's need to make sure her loved ones find love and happiness. With that notion, Willa meets Val's estranged brother, Gabe just before they board a plane to Scotland to embark on a crazy "Authentic Fully Immersive Jacobite Outlander Experience". What Willa and Gabe didn't know was Val's reason for the trip together until Gabe meets an old flame and Willa finds serenity in the land, attraction to a gorgeous Scot name Finn, and a purpose to truly help good people in need. But Willa's time there has an end date and finding herself is harder than she thought.

Willa is a big-time entertainment news producer who hob knobs with celebrities in L.A., but after the loss of her only friend, she's lonely, an outlander in a foreign land, and questioning her life. She's scared of what she's feeling about a McYummy lonely man who has baggage of his own, who rocks a kilt, and who makes her heart beat faster. Though Finn and Willa get off to a hilariously bumpy start (think unruly boobs!), their stories and real personalities are slowly revealed and they grow individually as well as a team. Finn's guilt for leaving his family due to resentment and loss is heartbreaking, but with Willa's insight and good advice, fences are mended. I also loved how Willa didn't hesitate to step up and unveil her savvy promotion skills to help Finn and his family save their castle and their farm. Both have some issues with expressing their feelings which leads to separation, but Finn's grand gesture is fun ending in a happily-ever-after ending.

This is an entertaining, original read which is heartfelt, funny, and packed full of regret, angst, and slow-burn chemistry. I'm so glad I picked it up.

Thank you to Ms. McClure for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

When her best friend Valentina is taken too soon by cancer, Hollywood reporter Willa Jenkins struggles to cope. But it seems that Valentina is looking out for her loved ones from the grave, forcing her estranged brother Gabe to join Willa on a two week Outlander themed experience to Balcraigie Castle in Scotland. There's just one problem... neither of them have watched the show!

What they can't know is that hosting this experience is a last ditch effort by siblings Orla and Finn to keep Balcraigie in their family. But as Willa and Finn grow closer, she discovers their secret and is determined to help them. Will they be able to work together to save Balcraigie? Or will Willa return to LA just as hopeless as before?

Thank you to Author @mcbookiemonster and @netgalley for providing me with this ARC. All opinions shared are my own.

Having never watched Outlander myself, this book was a fun way to learn about Scottish history and the most popular parts of the show. I thought the concept of the realistic Jacobian experience was brilliant and the other guests were a welcome addition to the wider character pool. I imagine that retreats like this exist all over the world for superfans of different shows and movies; I know I've seen some for Harry Potter!

This is a clean, closed door romance that mainly focuses on Willa's journey of self discovery and growth after incredible loss. Finn was a dream (who doesn't want a Scotsman like him to appear and rescue them) and I thought the airport scene was hilarious!

I admit I was drawn to this as a fan of anything that is set in Scotland, mentions Scotland and also a fan of Outlander the fact that I love Sheila McClure’s writing was an added bonus. I thought this was so original, a great twist on a beloved series of books/tv, but focusing more on its fans than the series itself , the focus on the love they put into the characters and stories was really well done, it did feel like a love letter to fans (of books, romance not just outlander) any teasing was always respectful and you can see the love for fans in the banter.

It’s a fast-paced and heartfelt read, I always love a story that focuses on a community that comes together, the relationship between Finn and Willa was perfect, I loved their connection and the tension, just brilliant (chefs kiss) I thought all of the character’s realistic and relatable. It's really is an addictive and funny story, full of heart. I thought Sheila did a fantastic job too covering issues of
grieving and healing with sensitivity and such care, along with finding yourself, accepting yourself and love.

This was a story I not only enjoyed, but made me feel seen as a fan of something, wether that be books, a TV show or something else, the humour is wonderful and respectful, always well meant, but as a fan everyone of us has foibles, obsessions and idiosyncrasies, I love that this recognised that and created this wonderfully unique story.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book is a 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Overall, this was a fun book! The premise that launches all the shenanigans (because that’s what they are) is heartbreaking: Willa’s best friend, Valentina, passed away from cancer and has left her and Valentina’s brother, Gabe, an all expenses paid trip to Scotland for an immersive Outlander TV show-inspired experience.

Willa’s life is a bit of a mess. She’s a workaholic, doesn’t have any other friends, and doesn’t see her family often. She goes on the trip, feeling some attraction to Gabe (after the two of them get day-drunk in a restaurant following the reading of the will) and finds herself in rural Scotland, wearing Jacobean-style clothing, doing chores around a farm, and falling for Finn, who is her fake husband for two weeks and the owner of the land they are on.

Willa gets herself into and then out of messes, becomes a shoulder for Finn to lean on as he opens up about the difficulties he and his family are facing and that they may lose the farm, and also begins to open up to the other guests in the experience, and also learns why she and Gabe would have never been a good match.

There were parts that I felt were drawn out or a bit cringey when reading, but altogether, i had a fun time reading this book. Of course, we have an HEA and the scene when Willa and Finn reunite is just as ridiculous (in a fun way!) as other events that brought the two of them together.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC. All thoughts are my own.

Scotlander is a delightful book that transports readers to the enchanting Scottish Highlands. With its charming storyline and lovable characters, it offers a refreshing break from my usual romantasy reads.

Willa Jenkins embarks on an Outlander-themed adventure in Balcraigie Castle, expecting a romantic fling. Instead, she finds herself partnered with the infuriatingly sexy Finn, pretending to be a married couple.

The plot is captivating, filled with witty banter and humorous moments. Willa's personal growth and the evolving relationship between her and Finn bring depth to the story.

Though the pacing could be slow at times, Scotlander remains an enjoyable read that captures the essence of romance against the stunning backdrop of Scotland.

In conclusion, Scotlander is a charming escape to the Scottish Highlands. It's a delightful book that will leave you with a smile and a desire to explore more of the author's works.

My grandfather and stepfather were from Scotland. I have always wanted to go. Never been but will be going this summer. The title is similar to the television show OUTLANDER for a reason. Like Willa, I never seen more than one or two episodes of it. I knew the premise but not much more.

Willa's best friend recently died. She gave Willa a ticket for Scotland for a week. Willa was in for an Scotlander adventure. She had no idea what she was in for.

Finn sounds just what you envision a man in kilts from Scotland to be. Strong. Muscular. A hunk. How could Willa resist this man even if he was just her "fake" husband?

A cute story of finding our destiny. Where do we belong? What's holding us back? I wanted Willa to allow herself to be vulnerable. I routed for her.

I received this book from Boldwood Books to review.

Smart, sweet, slow-burn rom com that brings Woody Allen's humor to mind. The main characters were likeable, and the Outlander immersion experience angle was loads of fun. Fairly early on, "Scotlander" departs refreshingly from the typical best-friend's-gorgeous-brother-forced-proximity trope that is set up at the start of the book. I did not see that coming and was pleasantly surprised at the change-up. Lots of pop culture references and Willa's job in the Hollywood entertainment industry (lots of celebrity name dropping, with The Rock getting a pivotal role) kind of made me feel like I wasn't getting the inside jokes that everyone else was laughing at. Amanda Ronconi and John Lane do a superb job with the narration.

The big C takes Willa Jenkins friend way too soon but Valentina leaves a surprise for Willa in the form of a Outlander tour and a fake husband. The plot of this one instantly had me intrigued but it started out really slow paced and I was unsure of whether I would continue but I persisted and I'm so glad I did. The second half of the book definitely picked up and I loved everything about it from the enemies to lover's. The sense of comrades had me feeling every single emotion. The characters are so funky and fun they made me smile so much that my cheeks are sore. I will definitely be reading more by this author.

As a lover of a good romcom and a huge Outlander fan I obviously had to read this book, and I really enjoyed it.
Willa, our female lead, has been betrayed by her boyfriend and her best friend has passed away, but not before arranging her final wish for Willa to go to Scotland for a two week immersive Outlander experience. And this is where the fun really starts. Take one less than enthusiastic American female and one very grumpy and equally good looking male, add in a Scottish castle and two weeks of acting as a couple and what you get is frustration, humour and before you know it, romance.
This is a nicely written, light and easy read that made laugh and I finished it with a smile on my face. I would definitely recommend it.
My thanks to the author, the publisher and to Rachel’s Random Resources for gifting me this book. I am leaving this review of my own volition.

3.5 stars but I'm rounding up because this book was really cute and feel good!

I enjoyed the book, though sometimes, it was difficult to differentiate between some of the characters. There were also a few grammar mistakes that took me out of the story.

Overall though, I still enjoyed reading it. I have been on a feel-good romance kick recently and this did the trick! I actually liked both Willa and Finn and thought that they both were well written. The love aspect was a bit rushed in the end after a slow-burn beginning, but as is the nature of romance books. I love Scotland and it was fun to read a book set in the country.

This was an okay story. It didn't hold my attention for long periods of time, so I read it in spurts.

I found the FMC to be a bit annoying, especially in the beginning when she couldn't make up her mind about which guy she wanted to be with. She thought she was sent on the trip with her best friend's brother so they could become a thing, but all the while kept ogling and thanking about hooking up with another guy.

I also thought the use of hyphenated descriptions was way over used and sometime there was no segue into a new scene or any note of a change in the chapter being told from a new POV.

🌶: longing and sexual tension, but they do not consummate within the confines of the story.

This is a total joy! Gorgeous funny atmospheric rom com with a feisty, clever and practical heroine transplanted from downtown LA into the Scottish highlands. The shenanigans around saving Finn’s family castle set the scene for a wonderful slow burn (slooooow) romance between her and local farmer Finn.
There’s a lot going on in this tribute to Outlander and Finn and Willa’s romance is only a part of the whole story. The Scottish dialogue and farming detail feels authentic. I adored all the supporting characters - especially Valentina and Orla. This closed door romance is beyond charming and I thoroughly recommend!

Fulfilling her best friend's wishes in her will is what will take Willa to Scotland and maybe lead her to a lot more.

In parts, I wanted to shout at the main characters to communicate and understand one another but understood this is the growth of the narrative, and added up to the epic ending which rounded off the narrative nicely and left me feeling very happy inside.

I also enjoyed the contrast the author gave us, showing us Willa's life in LA and what is happening while she is in Scotland, again this adds to the growth of the narrative.

Omg!! I need to find myself a Scotsman!! That voice should be illegal!! The story went to a different track than I expected and some things were exactly what I was expecting!! There wasn’t a lot of plot or character development, it would be an amazing movie tho, the scene were everyone gets together to save the farm, almost brought me to tears!! It was clean and I was a little disappointed on that but I loved the loved the outlander referenced!! 🤣 It was so funny and giddy, like an out of Christmas hallmark movie. The ending was so adorable!!

This is a lighthearted romcom, set mainly in beautiful Scotland which puts together a variety of people who are all in some way, looking for a way out of their current state. Sent on a working holiday with a group of Outlander superfans, Willa is desperately hoping that she can make sense of why her friend, has sent her on it in the first place. She is still grieving for her friend's loss. As the story develops, you realise that her dream job in LA may not be as satisfying as she has hoped. Still, she is dogged and determined to sort out people's messes and to make a secure future for herself. She may have rebelled against her off the beaten track childhood, but she does appreciate family and friendship - things she may have missed in LA.
Of course, the set up in the Highlands is not all it seems. What is clear to absolutely everyone is the chemistry between Willa and Finn. Finn has his own issues from his childhood and the dynamic between him and his family is complicated. However, he is loyal and caring. despite the guilt he feels that he may have let them down. There is plenty of humour within the story and a touch of romance which both add up to a enjoyable weekend read.

In short: LA meets Scotland

So not what I was expecting

I needed a light book as a break from the murder mystery kick i have gotten on and figured I'd give this book a shot. I was expecting a corny romance cosy, and instead found an utterly delightful love story with actual depth to it. I will admit, I have read the Outlander books, and just started watching the series on tv. I'm glad I had the background, it made this story so much more fun. Even if you haven't read Gabaldon's epic, this still would be a great read.

As an Outlander fan myself, I was sooo pumped to read this book! The plot was great. However, I think that after knowing how spicy Outlander is, I really thought this would have more of a romance & spice factor than it did. Would definitely say this is more of a PG/PG13 storyline. Slow burned romance that really didn’t come to a head until the literal ending chapters.
Would have loved to see more with Finn than was written. BUT - overall a good story! 💚🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

⭐️⭐️⭐️ .75. Cute story! Love Outlander (books and show) and I’m OBSESSED with everything Scotland so obviously I’m biased, but the MMC’s narrator is 🤌🏻✨🔥

That being said, there was soooo much talk about boobs. Like, SO much. The book ended up being mostly clean (minus some inner monologue moments), which was great, but the boob fascination felt a bit pervy.

This is all the fun tropes. MC loses her friend. Friend posthumously sets MC up to go on a trip with friends mysterious and hot brother. Both MC and Mysterious brother have to find peace with friend's passing while going through their own trials. In this case, taking a Jacobean trip to work as if they're on the set of Outlander.
It was consistently funny and good natured. It was an enjoyable read.
