Learning how to set a boundary isn’t just a useful skill—it’s a necessity for navigating life. I considered myself pretty comfortable setting boundaries, but this book taught me about different types of boundaries, how people (especially family) might push back on boundaries, and how to course correct if your first attempt at setting a boundary didn’t work.
This book also opened up dialogue between me and my partner. As the author pointed out to us, sometimes people assume their boundaries are in place because invisible lines have never been crossed. My partner and I checked in about any boundary blindspots we might have and if there were any boundaries we needed to vocalize for each other. We had fun with it and kept shouting “NEW BOUNDARY” any time the other did something mildly annoying. Haha. It started off as a joke but has actually brought us peace.
On a deeper note, this book could help somebody with more pressing issues like interpersonal conflicts with family, recognizing boundaries so that you yourself can also respect them, and how lack of boundaries could lead to burnout in the workplace.
10/10 loved this book and would recommend it to anybody willing to read it
"Your boundaries reflect how willing you are to advocate for the life you want."
This is an excellent book about boundaries: why people struggle to set them, what some typical boundaries look like, how to build them, and how to deal with other peoples' reactions to your boundaries. The author is a therapist in North Carolina with a prominent Instagram following, which is how I became aware of this book. I listened to it on Audible slowly, over 7 months, as the book is not the type you would zoom right through. Not all topics apply to all readers, but for those topics, I took it as "food for thought" to think about the lives of others. Some topics landed with me at this stage of life, particularly related to work-life integration and managing relationship dynamics when you have small kids. This book made me more aware of the boundaries I already had. It was affirming to realize how many healthy boundaries and relationships we have already built. I'm walking away from this text, remembering that we go through different seasons of life and that the things that served you in the past might not always serve you in the future.
I was searching for a book like this and I finally found it. I needed a book that can introduce the subject for young adults (I work with them.) Each area of boundaries that was introduced, deserve their own book, because it is complicated and individual.
I definitely recommend this book to people who don't have much prior knowledge about their own boundaries within their relationships.
