Nathan has a special gift that has been with him for as long as he can recall.
He can see the dead, and they whisper secrets to him. But his unique talent isn’t appreciated by everyone, nor is his flamboyant style. Growing up without a mother, raised by a single father, dressing fabulously, and being a seer of the invisible leads to all kinds of schoolyard problems. Despite his father’s never-ending support, Nathan finds comfort in his darker side.
When Nathan discovers his love of fashion, femininity, and fierceness, it’s only time before he evolves into Azadore Necrophilia Hex—the newest drag queen on the scene.
With dedication and study, and some spirits of the long-departed helping her along the way, Azadore soon becomes a local sensation. A big dark bear of man becomes a huge fan, and on their very first date, Azadore is introduced into the world of magicals, where she finally finds home.
J.P. Jackson is an award winning author of dark urban fantasy, paranormal, and even paranormal romance stories, but regardless of the genre they always feature LGBTQ+ main characters.
J.P. works as an IT analyst in health care during the day, where if cornered he’d confess to casting spells to ensure clinicians actually use the electronic medical charting system he configures and implements.
At night, the writing happens, where demons, witches and shape shifters congregate around the kitchen table and general chaos ensues. His husband of 22 years has very firmly put his foot down on any further wraith summonings and regularly lines the doorway with iron shavings and salt crystals. Imps are most definitely not house-trainable. Ghosts appear at the most inopportune times, and the Fae are known for regular visits where a glass of wine is exchanged for a good ole story or two. Although the husband doesn’t know it, Canela and Jalisco, the two Chihuahuas, are in cahoots with the spell casting.
J.P.’s other hobbies include hybridizing African Violets (thanks to grandma), extensive travelling and believe it or not, knitting.
This is the perfectly fitting compliment given to Azadore Necrophilia Hex—the newest drag queen on the scene and the MC of this short story. And just as perfectly fitting for this story here.
What J.P. Jackson wrote here is dark, magical and fierce.
The story of a little boy who can see ghosts and hear their secrets rapidly unfolds into something that is equal parts thrilling and horrifying. And it's generously topped off with a fabulous and equally dark and irresistible measure of fashion.
I may have been prepared for Nathan discovering his love of fashion, femininity, and fierceness, and his evolution into Azadore Necrophilia Hex, but Azadore's performances blew my socks off. That was some brilliant creativity masterfully set on the page!
The particular blend of horror, mystery, fashion and thrill this author delivers here, in a smooth and naturally flowing manner, is a major part of the otherworldly vibe you can practically feel. But add to that a gripping plot and a palpable sense of 'shit's about to hit the fan anytime now' and you got yourself a winner.
Dragged to Hell delivers. I didn't love it quite as much as Devil's Due, the first book I've read by this author - because this lacked that extra little bit of fun to lighten up the darkness. But still... A damn fine read.
Happy reading everyone and remember 'Be as kooky, or bitchy, or classy as you like. ... Most importantly, be you.'
I was in a severe reading slump and this book snapped me out of it, I enjoyed this short read over the course of two days. It never lost my interest, I was invested in the MC Nathan from chapter 1.
I loved how the chapters followed Nathan by age, starting at age 5 and onwards to 23. He is a fabulous boy, loved and supported by his single dad who watches RuPaul with him. Nathan is bullied in school but comes into his power as a teen, and as a young man he blossoms and creates his drag persona Azadore Necrophilia Hex.
Not just a sweet coming of age story, this is also creepy AF. Nathan not only sees dead people, he also has a demon inside of him who reaps vengeance on those who hurt him. The whole story is eerie, brutal, and entertaining.
This was my first read by J.P. Jackson and I am obsessed. If you enjoy horror, paranormal and LGBTQIA stories and representation you should put Jackson on your radar.
Whew! J. P. Jackson just blew my mind with Dragged to Hell!
As Nathan’s story unfolded and deepened, I was swept away with the theatrics, becoming an active part of Azadore’s audience. The beginning of this book in no way prepared me for the stage runway where we might finish. With the introduction to a world unlike his own, in several ways, Nathan’s power of self grows. The blended nuances of horror and fashion make this book more than otherworldly.
I am feeling all kinds of happy, even giddy, with the darkness that was unleashed in Dragged to Hell. I will be unavailable for the near future, as I continue to read Jackson’s books. Next up will be Magic or Die!!!
I loved this wonderful short-story from J.P. Jackson. This is a nice take on a Drag Queen origin story. You get to learn a lot about Nathan (aka Necrophilia Hex) his life as a young boy, what happened to him, and how he took the events of his past and used them as a source of power. Even though this is a short-story it’s a great read and one that, once you start, you won’t put down. I know this story is part of a larger universe that J.P. Jackson is working on, and I can’t wait to see how this all comes together.
Like the main character's drag queen persona Azadore Necrophilia Hex, Dragged to Hell, by J.P. Jackson, is a different, wholly unique creature. I've never read a supernatural gay romance that combines the paranormal, Drag, goth culture, and all that great queer lovey-dovey stuff and does it seamlessly with rich, descriptive text. It's a swirling, delicious witch's brew. Dragged to Hell is remarkably colourful in its darkness. Grab your vodka soda and get up to the front of the stage. The drag show is about to begin!
