Set in 2nd Century AD, during the Roman occupation of what is now Britain and Scotland, ENSNARING THE DOVE is a powerful, steamy standalone romance about finding true love in the unlikeliest of places.
Multi-award-winning author Jayne Castel writes epic Historical and Fantasy Romance. Her vibrant characters, richly researched historical settings and action-packed adventure romance transport readers to forgotten times and imaginary worlds.
Jayne is the author of a number of best-selling series. In love with all things Scottish, she writes romances set in both Dark Ages and Medieval Scotland.
When she's not writing, Jayne is reading (and re-reading) her favorite authors, cooking Italian feasts, and going on long walks with her husband. She's from New Zealand, but now lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Beautifully written. A love story against the odds. I adored this book and was hooked from the very beginning. Set in the second century AD there was no love lost between the Romans and the Scottish Brigante warriors. Two people who would never have met in normal circumstances were thrust together when rebels attack a supply convoy. Aeden could not stand idly by and watch what was to become of the beautiful Roman woman Columbia, at the hands of his Scottish countrymen. As he intervenes and they flee for their lives the story takes you through their escape and ensuing days of getting Columbia back to the safety of her farther and her soon to be betrothed. Along the journey the immediate dislike and wariness of each other turns to grudging respect, like and eventually a love that they know can never be accepted by their people. This story has it all from battles, slavery, loss, revenge, romance, passion, kindness and respect. Well worth the read. I loved it. “Ensnaring the Dove” is a historical romance set in 2nd Century AD, during the Roman occupation of what is now Britain and Scotland. It’s part of the ‘On the Empire’s Edge’ series by Jayne Castel, although you need not have read the first book in order to enjoy this one. Don’t worry if you haven’t read a book set in this time frame because the author does a wonderful job setting the scenes so that you can envision everything, without slowing down the pace of the story at all.
Columbia is a Roman noblewoman traveling a great distance to where her father and fiancé are stationed in their high-ranking positions with the Roman army. She hasn’t seen either of the men in years, and they have no idea she’s on her way to them. When violent rebels attack the convoy with which she’s traveling, it’s not going to end well for her. One of the rebels turns out to be Aedan, who rescues her. He’s not a typical member of the rebel group; he was born the eldest son of a chieftain, but ended up traveling a complicated and unwanted path in life that left him on his own and fighting for survival. Columbia and Aedan end up on the run together, and experience that changes both of their lives.
Cultural differences, class differences, language barriers, and assorted other obstacles face the couple as each is forced to go on with their own respective life. But as they say, true love finds a way … right? Aedan and Columbia are likable characters, and the connection between them is simultaneously sweet and steamy. There are a good number of interesting secondary characters, whose roles add additional dimensions to the story, and help bring the time period to life. I thought this book was well-written, thoughtfully researched, and wonderfully entertaining.

Ensnaring the Dove On the Empire's Edge #2 Jayne Castel ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Columbia Juventus is betrothed to an officer posted upon Hadrian's Wall. Determined to finally be with him, she sets off across the seas to Britannia to join him there. But when Brigante rebels attack the supply convoy that she's traveling in, her privileged, sheltered life shatters.
Aedan is a Brigante chieftains son, yet it seems his fate has always been entwined with the Romans. He fought them, lost, and was captured as a slave. He then received his freedom from them only to find out he no longer belonged in his old life. He wasn't able to go back and pick back up where he left off. Now, he's part of a band of outlaws that prey on travelers to the northern frontier.
But when an attack on Roman convoy turns downright savage, Aedan steps in, fighting against his fellow rebels to stop them from raping a Noblewoman. He finds that his destiny is once again tied to the Romans, who he once served.
Columbia finds herself on the run with a man who will change her life forever.
Jayne Castel is absolutely brilliant. This was such a riveting book that I couldn't put it down. You never knew what was going to come around the next corner, and when it did, it was never what you thought it would have been. It was so nice to see Aedan get his own story and be happy. Columbia was such a strong heroine that I couldn't help but feel in awe of her. These two characters went through a lot together, so they did deserve to be happy. If you want a book chalked full of history and jam-packed with action, then look now further. This book is for you. I really enjoyed every word of this novel. Ms. Castel, your writing talents astound me, and I look forward to your next book.
Ensnaring the Dove follows Aeden after the events of Taming the Eagle, at the end of which he has been freed from slavery to a Roman general. Despite that, it is totally adequate as a standalone and you can enjoy this story on it's own without feeling like you're missing a beat. After being given his freedom, Aedan finds he is not welcome at his home or by his fellow Brigante around the isle. He floats along with a band of outlaws until one day his group attacks a Roman supply convoy, where he saves Roman noblewoman Columbia from disaster. Columbia was traveling to Hadrian's wall to reunite with her father, a fort commander, and her fiance of 5 years. Aeden, having taken Columbia and run from the outlaws, agrees to escort her to the wall.
What I love about Jayne's writing is that she is so skilled at weaving a tale of two people from opposing sides of life (enemies to lovers, if you will). And it's not a manufactured "hate." Each character is fleshed out, has their own motivations, their own hopes, and all that informs their decisions and interactions. This is what makes it so easy to fall in love with the characters and believe in their story and their journey. I'm always amazed at how Jayne takes us through the story in a believable, exciting way where we end at an HEA.
One thing to note, Columbia and Aedan at around the midpoint were separated for 30% of the book, which seemed excessive to me. But Columbia did have a lot of growth during that time that she needed. I just wish Aeden had been a part of that, or we had seen more from Aeden in that time. However, I was still on the edge of my seat to find out where the story would go!.

Unlike most Scottish historical romances, this one takes place nearly 2,000 years ago when the Romans were trying to establish rule in what we now know as Great Britain. Even for Scottish historical romance, this is an uncommon time period for a book. This author normally writes medieval Scottish romance—and I nearly always like those books—though I have read some of her other ancient Scotland series, one I remember about the early Picts. Like those books, I wasn't wild about this one. I'm not quite sure why, though I think it's because the culture is so unfamiliar to us some 2,000 years later. Medieval Scottish stories at least home some elements we can relate to; there is little of that here. Compared to her other books, this seems to have way too much description and telling in the early chapter, which makes for a tedious read. At times, it was plodding to wade through. The book starts in media res, and you can't help but feel sympathy for the hero returning home after a long enslavement by the Romans, only to find his girl wed to his younger brother (and well into her 3rd pregnancy), his father dead, and that younger brother chieftain (and unwilling to relinquish it to the rightful heir). He leaves his people, but the life he chooses after that does not befit a man of his former station as chieftain’s son and heir apparent. Frankly, I just couldn't get into the story, like the others by this author that take place in ancient Scotland.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Ensnared by The Dove the story of Aedan and Colombia, a match that from the outside we never thought we wanted but it became the match that we honestly needed! Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
The story follows the unlikely love story of Aedan, a Brigante and Colombia a high ranking Roman lady. It was interesting to watch tie love blossom between this duo. Prior to meeting Colombia, Aedan had experienced loss in so many ways that had left him embittered and filled with resentment towards the Roman's, however when he saw the virtue of a innocent woman on the line, he risked his life to save hers. Throughout their journey a kinship is formed that blossomed into a steamy romance that had the temperatures rising! At first I wasn't sure whether I was going to like this book since this is honestly the first book I've read written by Jayne Castel but this book was amazing and I am so glad I randomly clicked on this ARC! I loved the descriptive words that pulled me into the storyline, I loved the fact that the author showed growth in the characters. I found myself smiling when they smiled, sad when they were sad but most importantly I rejoiced when they were victorious. Thank you Jayne for bringing this page turner to us, although I think the bags under my eyes might not agree lol.
"Linus doesn’t kiss like that... Linus doesn’t look at you like that..."
LINUS DOESN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO AEDAN!!!
Ensnaring the Dove is definitely the kind of historical romance that I enjoy indulging in. The unexpected yet expected romance between two perfectly paired people even while having different ranks in society, they still had so much in common. Columbia is bold and determined and knows what she wants just underneath the surface. But so does Aedan and I like that about them both. They are equally well rounded and good-hearted characters which made liking them so undeniably easy.
I loved when Aedan and Columbia were on the run from danger, the intoxicating moments that brought them to their realization of their boundless love connection. The intoxicating buildup of their love for one another intertwined together and the first moment of their passionate kiss was in the bright morning of a new day just after a night of torment that they both endured but could easily have reached for - was simply captivating.
I highly enjoy historical romances that transport you back in time to beautiful faraway lands and a curiously interesting storyline. It's so lovely leaving the modern world behind for a moment to escape somewhere else so intriguing.
Reading this in one sitting was not hard to do! Five stars!!
The H in the past fought against the Romans & was enslaved to his Roman master. In time he learned the language & underWonderful book. I so enjoy all that Jayne Castel writes. The clash of cultures between the Romans & the people they conquered was abrupt as there is a division between the"barbarians" & the Romans. Each had their own way of life, their own gods, language, history & values. The h does not fit in completely with the Roman culture as she is outspoken like her father & discovers her father & her fiancee lied to her as the "barbarians" of the land are not welcoming to the Romans. Instead they are angry & hostile as they do not want to adapt to the Roman ways. stood more their ways. He was the 1st son of his tribes leader & in time he is freed & returned home to learn his brother had taken the role of leader following their father's death. Now he is without a home, his former role & his people. He joins a band who fight against the Romans & when he sees some about to rape the h he rescues her. Again he no longer fits in with his former group. The two must run to escape the rebels who will kill the H & at best enslave the h. Adventure & another opportunity to view how some former enemies can connect in a meaningful way.
Picts, Battles, Old Friends, Romance: A thrilling beautifully written love story of two different classes of people that transports us back into time. We first meet Aedan re-entering his father's home after many years of being captured and enslaved by the Romans. He is surprised and sadden at his father's death and his younger brother is now taken over the lairdship and Aedan is no longer welcome. He needs to start a new life. He first turns to thievery. and lives among a group of bandits. This is where he meets his destiny and becomes a savior to Colombia a high-ranking Roman chieftains' daughter. She is on the verge of being physically accosted by the outlaws he is associated with. Now Aedan and Colombia are on the run. This is where the story turns into a journey of discovery, danger, growing passion, heartache which then leads to a very traumatic heart pounding battle and a delightful happy ending. My favorite chapter not to miss is XV. I always love a first kiss in a story. A really good story of two people from two different worlds and how they overcome those differences. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my honest opinion.
Oh wow! This book was so good I read it in one sitting. Jayne Castel is such a talented writer and I can envision the environment she describes. The characters were all wonderfully written and I find myself wanting stories for them. The story not only introduces new characters, but also an appearance from Justinian Aquila, Fenella, and Marcus from Taming the Eagle. I am looking forward to more books in this series.
Aedan is that brave and honorable hero that you instantly fall in love with. Colombia is the pampered daughter of a Roman nobleman. One that is strong willed and taking control of her life. She thinks she is in love and has ventured to Onnum to wed her betrothed, but fate has other plans. Together Aedan and Colombia go on a adventurous journey that brings them a new beginning and love.
This book not only tells a good love story, but brings some passionate heat with it as well. All scenes are well-written but not for those who prefer nothing more than a chaste kiss.

Ensnaring the Dove is the 2nd book in the On the Empire’s Edge by Jayne Castel. She is a masterful writer. From her use of vocabulary appropriate to the era to the development of the characters. The reader is emerged into the story following along for a great journey.
Aedan is a chieftain’s son. But, fate had other plans. He was captured during a battle and became a Roman slave. The saying: You can never go home again applies to Aedan. He is tainted with his having been a slave and is rejected when he goes home. That leaves him little choice for survival but to join a band of outlaws.
When the outlaws attack a Roman convoy, Aedan steps in to save Colombia Juventus, the daughter of a Roman officer stationed at Adrian’s Wall. Aedan and Colombia are on the run from the outlaws and he must bring her to her father.
I loved this book! Jayne Castel can tell a great story!

As was life in the second century, the beginning of Ensnaring the Dove was dark and ruthless. For the days when the Ceasar's troops occupied Britannia were filled with brutality, hate and war. But there was also life, love and hope.
Fear not romance readers. Although this era was dangerous, Jayne Castel loves to write love stories. Which means that against all odds, Aedan and Colombia will ultimately have their HEA beginning, and their story will be well researched and beautifully written.
Content 411: This book contains some coarse slurs, a couple of descriptive sex scenes and some battle violence. There is also an almost rape, which could be a trigger.
Disclosure: I received a complementary copy of this book from the author via Booksprout. I am voluntarily submitting my honest review.
Aedan was a slave to the Romans but has been freed. He is now an outlaw. Colombia Juventus is a Roman noble woman who has come to Britannia to join her father and her betrothed who are stationed at Hadrian’s Wall
When the convoy Columbria is travelling in is attacked Aedan steps in to stop her being raped. He promises to take her to her father.
“Set in 2nd Century AD, during the Roman occupation of what is now Britain and Scotland, ENSNARING THE DOVE is a powerful, steamy standalone romance about finding true love in the unlikeliest of places.
(Content and trigger warnings: this story contains steamy scenes, violence, and coarse language, it also contains an attempted rape.)”
I really enjoyed this story.

A love story against all the odds set in the time of the Roman occupation. After being taken captive and held as a slave for years Arden is given his freedom and returns home. Only he is no longer welcome and everything has changed. Colombia has waited years for her betrothed, Linus, to return home for her and decides to travel to him only to be attacked and end up on the run with Aeden. Each of them learn that neither of them belong anywhere anymore and hard truths are experienced. Each learns what is important but it may not matter with so much prejudice against them. A beautiful love story with 2 strong well matched characters. Loved it.

I wasn't sure what to make of Colombia in the beginning, but she turned out to be a strong, outspoken Roman woman who fit more with Britons than she did with her own people. Aedan, after being Aquila's slave for seven years of course has issue with Romans in general. I could feel his hatred for losing his pride and honor, as one of the four Celtic tribes in Britain I come from is the Brigante. It's difficult sometimes to watch things play out, but there is always a satisfactory outcome in Jayne Castel's books.

She wants to be with her betrothed and he is just trying to stake out a new life for himself, although it is not with the best of people. Our heroine started out as naive but she eventually learns that things do not always go as planned. I liked that both our hero and heroine found each other, and learned how to survive together, but go their separate ways to come back together. This story was one of forging a new future and fighting for it despite the odds. Definitely recommend if you enjoy reading about the Romans/Picts.

This outstanding book will immediately bring you into the complex storyline. I loved how you were able to get lost in the characters lives. Aedan has endured so much in his life, you’d think he’d be bitter, but that is so far off from how his is. I loved how Colombia has so much courage and so much strength, that she will surprise you. I loved the detailed descriptions of the time will keep you riveted to the story.

This was another great installment by Jayne Castel! In contrast to the first book in this duet, this story seemed less focused on conflict between the characters and more on a flourishing relationship present from the very beginning. I think both characters really grew along their journey together, and I loved that both of them finished the book having gotten over obstacles and emerged confident in themselves and their relationship.
Can't wait for Jayne's next series!.

I can’t say enough about how much I enjoy reading this authors book. I know I’m in for a long night. I can always feel like I’m right there watching it play out as I read. I think to my self I’d watch this as a movie or miniseries. If you haven’t already read there books. I’d highly recommend them to you. Amazing storylines and characters you can believe in.

Colombia is a neglected, independent woman searching for love in her life. Aedan is a warrior born, ex-slave embittered by his past. This is a sweet and charming love story, following two lost souls who find each other when the time was perfect. Both were ready for new beginnings, for a blending of cultures and traditions, and for new friendships….

This is a ‘you can never go home again’ kind of story, filled with danger, drama, action and emotion. It is a gripping tale with terrifying moments, heartbreaking discoveries, and obstacles galore. But love conquors all, and breaks down barriers. This is a thrilling, steamy story that will hold your interest and your heart.

I have found it so hard to review this book without giving away any spoilers. Suffice to say I was as enthralled by Aedan and Colombia as I was by Justinian and Fenella (The Eagle) who made an appearance , I love Jayne's style of writing and look forward hopefully to the next book in this series.

Set in the 2nd Century AD, this is a powerful and page turning romance. Aedan and Colombia are fantastic characters and find true love against all odds. I enjoyed this well-crafted story and description of a world that was vividly brought to life.
Jayne Castel's stories are so good for lots of reasons but I think what I love most is at the end of each book she writes about her historical research and notes that made it into the book and how they informed her story.
I’m a fan of historical romance, and this book hit all the marks for me. I enjoyed the development of the characters and their relationships, as the story progressed.

I loved this one just as much as the first. Colombia and Aedan were wonderful characters and I was once again transported back in time. Beautifully written and completely enthralling, I devoured this book and highly recommend it.
I enjoyed reading this book. I would recommend this book for anyone who like romance novels. This is the second book in the series but could be read as a stand alone.
