Nephy and Zagan have finally confessed their feelings to each other, but neither of them have any idea how to act like a normal couple. After getting some advice, Zagan finds out about a mysterious event know as a 'date,' and goes on a research trip in town where he coincidentally saves the blind therianthrope, Kuroka, a newly dispatched priest. At the same time, Nephteros discovers the truth of her origins and escapes to Zagan's territory while being pursued by Bifrons' chimera.
A return to form for this series as the loose ends from the last 2 volumes slowly get wrapped up. While the previous volume was really quite messy and all over the place, this volume was a lot of more focused.
The book starts with Nephy's lookalike being chased down by her master, Bifrons, serving as the antagonist for the past 3 volumes. Events slowly culminate to a decisive showdown between Zagan and Bifrons, which sees Zagan finally prevailing over him and bringing a sort of closure to this arc.
Of course, this series wouldn't be itself without some sappy flirting scenes between the protagonists and safe to say, there's quite a few of them here.
This book also introduces a few new characters, chiefly amongst them is the adopted daughter of previous antagonist-now-butler, Raphael. The regulars do get enough screentime and Chastille's scenes sometimes threatens to overshadow everyone else, even Zagan, which is great for her since she's quite the likable type.
Ironically, Nephy contributes the least this time, which oddly makes for a nice change as the others get their turn to shine. The series has had a tendency for a while now to rely on her to pull some deus ex machinas in the action scenes, so it does feel good to see the expanded cast get to show off their abilities as well.
Overall, still a nice series to read and even if there are some weakspots in the writing at times, it remains quite a wonderfully imaginative read.
An Archdemon, you say? Well, it is a title. A man and woman in 💘 brings many stories to life. Love is a form of sorcery that takes an awful lot of study and practice. Love 💘 can be life changing. I'm so much in love and because of Fuminori Tesima' prose I am finding that I have probably, no most assuredly, must emphasize creating a place where my soulmate and I can express our desire for each other. Twenty-five years in and eternity is still ahead of us.
While there are some interesting developments and revelations in this particular volume, I had a hard time getting into it. I was always finding excuses to put it down. I had 60 pages left this morning and swore I'd make it through today. So here I am. Oddly enough, that last 25% of the book was probably the most interesting to me.
Anyhow -- it's worth a read if you like the series so you know what's going on and get those revelations about some of the characters.
It's a little difficult for me to review volume 5 of Elf Bride as I read the first half as it was translated though my J-Novel Club subscription and then had to take a long break due to personal circumstances. Despite that, I would say this is a stronger story than the previous volume and really helped to flesh out Chastille and Nephteros, the central characters for this book. It's one of the more serious, dramatic entries in the series so there are less outright fluffy moments between Zagan and Nephy but there's a lot of good character moments for the side characters which more than makes up for it.
It has been a very fun adventure. While not overly complicated but rather straightforward, it is not predictable in anyway. It is a story I plan to share with my eleven year old son, because I feel we will spend many enjoyable hours discussing these characters adventures.
