A new psychic has moved to Coventry and opened a shop in the square. The problem is that she’s probably a big fat fake. Even worse, one of her customers turns up dead after a reading.
While Kinsley doesn’t believe the new psychic has a lick of supernatural power, she also doesn’t think she’s a stone-cold killer.
So, she and Meri will have to find a way to clear her name and bring the real bad guy to justice.
Oh, and for… reasons… Bonkers is now home all day. Meri will have to adjust.
Sara Bourgeois is a Midwesterner through and through. She spends her time writing, reading, herding cats, and standing in her driveway during tornado warnings. (You can't see them from the basement.)
This book opens as a new business is getting ready to open. Kinsley and Meri observe the new proprietor and the Psychic Readings sign but sense nothing witchy about the woman.
Meri thinks Kinsley should have bought that building and opened a bakery, which leads to them heading home and making scones. Scones they thought Lilith might like. Arriving at Lilith's, there's no car in the driveway and they hear a noise in the yard. There they find Charity Lubbox, you'll remember her from the last book. With no one else around and the dining room window broken, Kinsley calls the police. It's Jeremy who shows up and just as he's about to arrest her, she takes off and steals his car. Jeremy is embarrassed and Kinsley gives him her phone so he can call Thorn instead of calling it in.
Dorian and Kinsley visit the new Psychic in town and low and behold Charity is there. A phone call to Thorn and Dorian restrains her until he can arrive. Unfortunately she's bailed out by her ex-husband and no one has seen her since.
An incident at the girl's school involving Laney has Kinsley pulling both girls out and sending them to the regular school. This causes some upset with the coven who send her cousin Chai to talk to her. Not a fun conversation.
Hekate saw and spoke to a ghost who didn't have enough energy to manifest. The ghost was Charity, but no one has reported a body. Thorn tries to help, and they get nowhere except they find books of receipts written by Charity for things she deigns are owed to her. Kinsley starts investigating a possible murder without a body.
The ghost in Town Hall is back and there's an issue with Thorn being there. Then there's Lilith acting stranger than usual. New Lilith just seems off to Kinsley but she can't put her finger on any one thing, even Thorn has noticed.
There is a lot going on it this book, and almost every page adds something else. I truly had no idea how everything would resolve. Suspense abounds, and there's laughter, and cat antics with Meri and Bonkers and a surprise ending.
I have read by this author before so when I saw this title at low price I grabbed. This family of witches is different. Kinsley, the Coven leader, has twin 8 year old girls. Laney is a good student, but she gets kicked out of the town’s magic school after she is bullied so mom puts them both in public school. Chastity is obsessed with getting her ex-husband back and making lists of what SHE thinks are ways people have hurt her and how much money she wants in compensation. She never calls the police she just harasses them constantly. She is a “normal” not a paranormal, but she becomes a problem when she tries to break into the home of one of Kinsley’s relatives then steals a police car to get away. The rest of the book is about finding Chastity after she is released from jail by her ex-husband putting up the bail. I like the twists in the plot and enjoy the nutty stuff that Bonkers, Laney’s cat familiar does and the mystery of the hunt for Chastity.
This is an entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series. A great cast of characters and a slightly darker storyline. Kinsley is the head of her coven in the town of Coventry. Her family the skin bore witches have been in charge of witchcraft in their town for a very long time. Her husband is the sheriff her two daughters are also witches and her family basically rules the roost as far as magic goes in their town. Kinsley owns a couple of businesses which she has people manage as she raised her family and tends to always get involved in murder mysteries and other major crimes. This story is no different and once again something is going on and Kinsley is out to find out. Redone and enjoy.
Arc review I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Kinsley is married to the chief of police Thor and they have two children. who she is protective over . there is another new shop in The square of town and another murder . this one gets funny is spots cute.
Sara obviously knows how to draw in her readers. The book started with Meri and that made it awesome. Can never get too much of this snarky cat! Bonkers is growing on me too! This book goes by quickly and the story has not become boring even at book 17. Looking forward to book 18.
Sara Bourgeois is amazing. She has taken wonderful characters and a beautiful setting and made something magical. If you can, start this series from the beginning, you will not regret it. I highly recommend that you read this series and anything else written by her.
Kinsley has always been in the business of solving murders and bringing justice. This book deviates from that formula. Even when Brighton took over the one book she solved a murder and brought justice. Good did not triumph over evil in my opinion. Evil didn’t necessarily win, it just didn’t lose. Then there is creepy Lilith. She is a loose cannon waiting to explode.
Sara Bourgeios definitely knows how to keep a reader hooked! The storyline is unexpected but good. Kinsley has taken her girls out of magic school and put them into a regular school. So while trying to figure out another mystery new characters come in to shakeup the story as well as Kinsley!
Enjoyable story Well crafted story, lots of interesting happenings. Good plot and characters, make it a quick read, but several adjectives are overused. Sometimes in a couple of sentences. The repetition ruins the flow of the story. It's still a nice read, but definitely could stand a better ARC team and/or a better proofreader.
A murder mystery without the dead body? Check! Kinsley has her work cut out with this one. When she ends up figuring it out, well, jaw drop! Total surprise for everyone, well, except for the killer.
Story had many storylines. Hope they get resolved in the next book. I am getting lost with The many new characters which consequently push some of my original favorites
The 17th book in the Familiar Kitten Mysteries series is definitely an engaging mystery. Where I find it lacking is in enough interaction amongst the characters. I miss the interaction between friends. Still I keep reading the series.
As always, thanks for the great entertainment. You are such a creative writer. I have enjoyed every single book of yours I have read which is now 17. Keep up the great work.
