A collection of the very best writing by African-American women, The Bluelight Corner explores and reveals all the rich and varied dimensions of Black women's romantic lives. A dramatic, touching, lively, erotic, tender, tragic, fierce, bawdy, heartfelt, and utterly surprising collection of voices, this is a one-of-a-kind gem of fiction and memoir.
I just adored this mix of essays, excerpts, poems, and stories. It’s shocking how so many of the struggles these women wrote about decades ago still ring true today. My only critique is that I wished there was some sort of structure or categorization, to make these pieces flow a bit better. There were a few 180s in there that broke my NECK.
The cover and the title caught me. But, it's really more about romance and the trials/tribulations of relationships. Lots of variety. Lots of 'sense of place.' Not all great reads. Not for one sitting or even all in a row. I interspersed them with other works I was reading. They're good.
