Three strangers chosen by the gods. A castle-servant who can bend fire and light to his will. A musician whose song can soothe even the wildest of hearts. And a nobleman with the gods’ own luck.
Three strangers gifted with powers beyond that of normal mortals stand against the armies of shadow. But there are other gods, other powers lurking in the darkness, and they too will find their champions.
Hunted by mortal and immortal enemies alike, Alesh and his companions flee south to the Ferinan lands. There, they will search for help they desperately need, those who might stand with them against the coming darkness.
A nobleman without hope. A musician to whom every song sounds like a funeral dirge. A castle servant at risk of being consumed by an evil greater than any he has faced.
They have set themselves against the coming Ever Dark. But shadows are not easily conquered, and no matter how many are cut down, more rise in their place.
For the truth of shadows is that they are not born. They are made.
“Never go in to the darkness without a light.” “The further a man journeys down his chosen path, the longer, the more arduous, the return must be.” A clever, fast moving, and thrilling story. A profound, thought provoking tale, with many philosophical connotations, reflecting the misery of human souls, but, also the goodness we all possess, but sometimes forget or are too selfish to recognize and accept it. There were parts of a dialogue that reminded me so much of our present world situation, the despair, the futility, the needless hate and wars, the greed of possessions and power, the need for light to illuminate and guide humanity..it is a heart wrenching story, full of tales to learn. Mortals and Gods, Light and Darkness, Good and Evil, is the fate of humans sealed to perish? Will Having some benevolent Gods on our side be enough? A clash of mighty gods, some to destroy mankind, others to defend its existence. This book is so thrilling...The plot is unique and riveting. The world building is fabulous, with great characters, good and bad alike, realistic and nerve wrecking. “Unputdownable" book...I can't recommend this series enough!
I thought this was better than the first book. I’m a little more invested in the story and characters now. I really like Rion although he does need to shut up most of the time lol. I don’t usually enjoy having a little kid tagging along but I’ll get over it. Apparently, she has a part to play later.

Another great. This second book says it all, continues where the first one left off. I couldn’t read it fast enough to find out what happens at the end. Hopefully there are many more to come in this intriguing fantasy series.
Of the six Chosen that helped save the world the most powerful one has been murdered and a few of the others are trying to take total control by using the very beings they defeated before.
Alesh, the former servant, is fleeing with his friends because they have powers the chosen cannot control. When, Sonja, a young girl they are protecting is kidnapped, their goal then becomes her rescue while staying alive themselves.
I truly wish it had not been a year since I read The Son of the Morning as I had forgotten a great deal of it. It is very easy to lose track of characters when there are so many and you haven't read about them for a while.
Catching up in this story was a little slow but eventually became intriguing enough to keep me fully interested in finding out what happens.
This book gives more insight to his other characters, there is also a bit more of the original “Gods”. Since the author was a short story master, the filler bits are repeated and kind of obvious and I blame the publisher. They want more books to sell. Again, I read the next book after I read something else. The repeated bits make me have to do that for most books, so not a slight on Mr Peppers..
70% through and couldn't care to finish. Characters are interesting, but the book rambles on about everything to the point I was skimming through page after page of repetitive thoughts, feelings, and descriptions. Just not enough meat.
I really liked book 1 in the series, but there was not much of a story to this second book and in the end it seemed to be all about slaughtering people and other creatures. Had to give up. The narrator Derek Perkins is very good.
Interesting enough to read, but a bit slow to develop for me
Two books to set the stage w/out climax is a bit slow paced for me. If you like character and setting dev you may like it better than I. But as always, I thank the writer for contributing, for who am I to criticize when all I do is read vs. write. Thanks,
Oh my goodness!! I thought book one was good, but The Truth of Shadows is even better! I love the struggle of light against dark - Jacob Peppers does such a great job of writing villains and heroes. The heroes aren’t perfect, but they mean well. The characters are the driving force of the story for me, they are so well developed. The plot is intriguing and there were some twists I didn’t see coming! I highly recommend this series!
I received an ARC from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This sequel, takes off at a run, the brutality of this expertly built world, as well as the truly intriguing characters are back, pulling you into their journey within a handful of chapters. My favorite part is definitely the characters themselves. They take you on a roller-coaster that only a handful of authors can pull of as brilliantly as they are in this series. The plot keeps you guessing, and the end continues to leave you desperate for the next book. well worth the read.
Wow. Jacob has given us new adventure to fall in to. New characters to fallow on their journey for to cast off the dark an walk in the light. That are chosen by the Gods to help humanity. Being chased by Nightlings, Redeemers, Tesharna Soldiers an the Broken. They must find there way. That have to stand together to face what comes. Good or bad, night or light, one step at a time.
Book 2 was a fun read with errors throughout. I enjoyed the plot and characters overall. The main character has grown well and developed well. He does complain a lot about stuff throughout the book. The plot has been exciting and new characters are added and explored. I look forward to book 3.
This book follows directly on from book1, so if like me you didn't read it then you maybe a bit lost to start with. The gods are squabbling and using proxies to fight it out. Light vs dark. Loads of action and intrigue in this latest book from Jackob.
The second book doesn't disappoint, continuing the story of Alesh and his friends. Once I picked up the book, it was hard to put it down. The story was well written, sucking you in it. Jacob remains to be one of my favorite authors. Can't wait for the story to continue.
World building at its best. Heroes with flaws. Much to overcome mentally, spiritually and physically. What happens when a Divorce among the Gods goes bad.? They use the children of man to fight their war. Great second installment.
