Raelyn DeRose has it all -- almost. She has great friends, a job she loves, and a wonderful family. Her love life, however, is a little lacking. After a failed engagement, she's on a bit of a hiatus from men and definitely feeling the effects of her dry spell. When she catches an article about the booming professional baseball career of her former childhood best friend, she can't help reminiscing and feeling as though she might have lost her shot at real love ages ago.
Meet Quinn Major League All-Star, hard-hitter, and, okay, he's kind of a sex icon. When Quinn finds out he'll be sitting out the season due to an injury, he gets called back home to deal with something he thought he'd left in the past. Not only is he confronted with his beyond-complicated relationship with his heroin-addicted mother, but he's also thrown a curveball when he runs into his childhood best friend at his first physical therapy session.
It's obvious there is still a lot of steam between these childhood sweethearts, but will their passion -- and let's not forget, amazing sex -- for each other be enough to hit a home run? Or will this hard-hitter strike out on love?

i really tried to get through this book, because the beginning had SO much potential. however, the guy in this book was the biggest douchebag literally ever. he gets mad at her ex for talking about their intimacy, and then he goes and tells everyone in detail about his and her sex life?? also, there is NO reason for the sex scenes to last 50 pages. nobody wants to read about how hes growling and "making animalistic noises". this reminds me of the wattpad books i read when i was 12, and not in a good way.
This isn’t your average friends to lovers, where the friends meet and hang out for years and then one asks the other to be their fake partner in order to get friends to stop playing match maker or keep a half-truth just that. This is a story of finding your best friend at 7, growing up with them, one fall for the other, they have a falling out, and don’t speak for years. When they find each other again, by a complete “accident” (meaning their mutual friends made sure they would run into each other), the sexual tension and chemistry between them is still there. Forget becoming friends again; they want each other as more than best friends; and this time Quinn is determined to show Rae just how much she has always meant to him and that he is in this for life! Meet Quinn and Raelyn (Rae). Quinn is a pro baseball player, so where he doesn’t see Rae for years, she can’t get away from seeing him in the spotlight and how the media portrays him. Sex icon, bad boy, different girl every night. You read quickly into the book that Quinn “doesn’t do love”, only because he is trying to forget the only girl he’s loved since he was 14, the one who got away, because he messed up; BIG TIME. Quinn is not playing this season as he needed to have surgery on his arm and will be in PT for a year. He returns home, a place he left and never looked back on. His mother is dying from choices she made during his childhood and he holds a lot of regressed anger towards her. Rae is a PT, a very good one, and is doing well for herself owning her own clinic. Rae has been on a hiatus from dating, due to her last relationship coming to a grinding stop when her fiancé wronged her. Growing up, Rae never saw Quinn for anything but himself. While Quinn hasn’t seen her in years, she hasn’t been able to not see him, due to the media. She only sees Quinn, her former best friend, one of her biggest regrets being him leaving and not going after him. She never cared or flaunted that while she came from privilege, Quinn came from nothing. So image the surprise when she shows up for work and there’s Quinn, hoping for an appointment, unaware that Rae was the PT. While she can’t ignore how good looking he has become, she is aware of Quinn’s reputation and isn’t going to fall for his charm, dimpled smile, and unruly hair (that she has always loved). She won’t succumb, she won’t…… The sexual tension and attraction is immediate between the two. Forget building the friendship back up, Quinn is determined to show Rae she is all he has ever wanted and make her his forever. And with 10 plus years of memories, feelings, and fantasies…..it will either be everything he ever hoped for, if not better, or he will lose his best friend, his dream girl all over again. Hard Hitter is a book that I devoured. The combination of imagery, character and word buildup, the feelings that jumped off the page, and the spice made this a book I didn’t want to put down. I fell in love with Quin and Rae immediately and ate up their relationship. Kaylee (the author) gives us a dual POV that transitions seamlessly between the present and the past, where readers get to see how Quinn and Rae became and how they ended those many years ago. The characters read like friends the reader has known forever, the hurt and pain resonating as you see Quinn heal from his childhood. Oh and before I forget (I never could and you will know what I mean after you read this book), the spice in this book is mwah (chef’s kiss). It’s well written, vivid, and hot! The reader doesn’t have to read much before the spice shows up and once it does, phew…..it doesn’t stop. Kaylee is a master at giving her readers plenty of spice, while keeping a solid plot line throughout her book. I am so glad I was given the opportunity to read this book and will recommend it to everyone who asks for these tropes. Kaylee is definitely an up and coming romance author, who has a bright future ahead of her. She has mastered balance in her book, filling it with heart, warmth, and spice. I am excited to read more of her books and can’t wait to see where her career takes her. TW: cheating (not MCs), drug use (not MCs), child neglect (in one MC’s past, not in the present), and graphic sexual situations
Hard Hitter by Kaylee Losey is the first book of the author that I've read and it won’t be the last as I enjoyed every minute of reading it. Quinn and Raelyn are two lovers who were also best friends during childhood, and while a series of circumstances separated them. They meet at the Physical Therapy session, when Quinn has been sidelined from the season due to an injury he doesn't know if he has it in him to be open to love. Raelyn is coming after failed relationship and she's on a bit of a hiatus from men and definitely feeling the effects of her dry spell. It's obvious there is still a lot of steam between these two, but will their passion -- and let's not forget, amazing sex be enough to sustain them forever? This is a laugh out loud, swoon worthy romance that you would want to read in one go. The author has given attention to detail which makes it seem like you’ve lived this story. Kaylee Losey is a talented writer with a great story plot! I highly recommend this book for a good read that you can't put down
Tropes -childhood best friends to lovers -second (or third?) chance -he falls first -sports
First, I want to shout from the rooftops just how FUN Hard Hitter was; such an enjoyment to read and a part of me is sad that it’s over! Although it did take me a minute to get into, and the book is definitely a little longer than I normally tend to pick up, I still feel like I flew through it once I got into the plot and our main characters: Rae and Quinn. With both the second chance and friends to lovers tropes mixed in with some sports, this book was a wonderful combination of angst, tension, heartache, yearning, and spice. I loved getting to see chapters from both Quinn and Rae’s POVs, and although their miscommunication bugged me at times, in the end I saw why they struggled so much with being completely honest with each other. Kaylee Losey’s Hard Hitter is such an underrated romance, and I would definitely recommend checking it out!
CW for cheating (not between mcs), drug addiction (in past, with mother), sexual content, child neglect (in past).
Thanks so much to the author and Romance me with Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I tend to stick with hockey, soccer or football as my sports romance preferences but this did not disappoint! I love the connection between Quinn and Raelyn. I also loved that instead of just telling us about their past we got to experience it through flash backs. I loved getting to read all about the important parts of their friendship without the story feeling rushed or the past being glazed over because what happened before felt important. I feel like it really gave an inside look into the friendship and being able to see the connection that was there all long. Also, Charlie had me laughing and I loved seeing the relationship between Charlie and Quinn! Definitely hoping there's maybe some stories for a few side characters we meet!
Raelyn and Quinn met when they were 7 years old. From best friends to soulmates, you follow them trough decades of friendship, love and missed opportunities.
Quinn is now a MLB star, far from the poor kid living on the wrong side of the tracks. When he sees Rae for the first time in 10 years, he vows that the girl will be his, once and for all!
I loved the writing, how the novel was build around the flashbacks starting at their first meeting when they were 7 up till leaving for college. The depth of both MC is what does it for me. Yeah, he’s sexy and steamy, but the fact that he loves LOVES her… AMAZING 🤩
It’s baseball season once again, and if you’re in the mood for a baseball read, then this is the for you! I really enjoyed how we got the back and forth with this from how long Quinn and Rae have known each other. We get their dynamic then vs now and it’s evident how in love the two have been for quite some time.
When you’re childhood best friends and hold secret crushes close to your chest - the best way for you to come about in adult life is either through a one bed trope, or forced proximity. This is absolutely a forced proximity case and an unfortunate sports injury caused it.
Exploring both Quinn and Rae’s pasts made this book more enjoyable because it also forced you as a reader to constantly wonder if they’d grow.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! This childhood best friends to lovers, second chance, he falls first romance was such a fun read and I really liked Quinn and Rae’s characters. The beginning of this book felt a little slow, but after a few chapters I was quickly and thoroughly engaged in the book. I loved the writing and the way the author used flashbacks to show their relationship. These characters were well-written and I loved the bond between these two!
These characters are so well written that you can’t help but experience their love, loss, joy and pain right along with them. This is a Sports Romance about two childhood sweethearts who are given a second chance at love. All grown up the two main characters realize that their connection never waned despite time and distance but being grown up means grown up problems. These two have undeniable chemistry and the spice is bed breaking!! I look forward to the next book by Kaylee Losey!
Thank you Hawthorn & Asher and Kaylee Losey for a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
Going into it almost immediately, I kind of wished they connect more emotionally during their first meet (after years of being apart), instead of imeddiatley feeling horny. I did think some pages I read were funny and definitely enjoyable at times (& sweet), but I was expecting a little bit more. Not to mention there was some momments where I just had to stop reading and ask myself If I wanted to just stop reading the book altogether, whether it was because of some weird thing they said that made me cringe, or just the plot feeling really slow.
Also it was in third person, and don't get me wrong I love some books in 3rd person, but in romances I feel like it kind of takes away from the whole "I feel it" part of the story. The feeling that first person gives you that just makes you feel deeply connected to the characters.
I found myself just skipping ahead to see how much I had left of the book and I ended up realizing that there was technically a third act breakup, and that's just one trope I can't get behind. I'm so sorry for anyone who really enjoyed this book, but it just wasn't for me. Although I did like how the author included awareness of childhood abuse and neglect, it's a real thing and more people should pay more attention to those situations. Rest assured I'm sure lots of people would like this book, but for me personally it was a no. Maybe sometime in the future I'll give this book another shot.
~
quotes I did like:
"The sound of Rae's laugh as she held onto him put him on cloud nine. He couldn't remember ever feeling this happy. It was more than happiness. It was euphoria."
♡
"But this wasn’t some woman. This was Rae. Everything he knew about charming or seducing women somehow flew out the window and got run over by a semi when she was near. Because he actually cared. Because she was...it."
♡
"Homecoming was just a big show, anyway. He didn't need to see Rae in a fancy dress to know she was all he wanted"
2024 Covid isolation book. Did this have to be 500 pages? No. Will this couple make it ? Also probably not. They’re dysfunctional and solve their problems with sex but who knows maybe it will work out.
Whew, now that I got that out of my system, my nose can unwrinkle in disgust...at least marginally.
It's weird, because this is a one star for different reasons than my last one star. This author was a decent writer with decent editing and the story wasn't nonsensical, but this was NOT romantic, not even a little bit. This was one loooooooooong romantic tragedy that was honestly just painful and disgusting and toxic and not in a dark romance fantasy way. Promiscuous does not even begin to cover BOTH MC's and just in the grossest sluttiest way. I say slutty in the sense that they both had sex with EVERY BODY for the worst possible reasons. As much as the FMC wasn't necessarily my favorite, the MMC was a nightmare! The ways he just continually failed as a person, as a friend, as a significant other, as an adult...I have zero confidence in his ability to keep it together for even a full year after the book ended. Also, this was hardly a second chance romance, this was a 374 chance romance. There was lots and lots of gratuitous sex, but after the first time I just skipped over it because it didn't feel like it *meant* anything. I didn't get the impression they were soul mates, they seemed like a train wreck! In highschool, I guess I could maybe understand, but the way that the H ran to other pussy every time he was even slightly upset with her, the fact he LIED about being a virgin to try to have sex with her...and didn't even tell her he had sex with her ENEMY for the first time...why would the author write this mess thinking it was anything other than a toxic sludge tragedy? I'm far from a prude, but the way they just rubbed all their other conquests in each other's and everyone else's faces? I feel like there was some thread of trying to have sexual liberation or freedom or something, but instead it just came across as gross and desperate. It didn't seem like anyone understood what love really is. I think they both really care for each other, but the years of therapy the H would need to be able to handle a long term adult relationship with ANYONE is daunting as hell. I'm still in disbelief that after ALLLLL the fucking ways he fucked up, he had the AUDACITY to get mad at her and leave her because she VERY UNDERSTANDABLEY assumed he was fucking someone else and didn't immediately want to talk to him. Between what she went through with her ex cheating on her, gas lighting her about it the first time she caught him and then catching him fully in the act of cheating on her again AND the H being a childish, incommunicative man-whore who had a history of lying to her if it benefited him and also getting with other girls when he was upset with her, she had EVERY reason to believe he was really cheating. He had MUCH less reason to believe she was cheating on him, even given the circumstance and the fact neither of them could trust each other and no matter what they said, neither of them really could trust the other one, trust is built over time and all they'd built over time was hurt. Lots and lots of hurt and horrible missed opportunities. This book was like every highschool romance book I've read of it had gone wrong. I skimmed through most of it, just to find out what all happened and in some morbid fascination at how horribly toxic and tragic it all was. I feel beaten up after this read and need some time to lock my wounds, but I will never read another book by this author, her idea of romance and mine are very different.
Yikes.. made it about 12%. My first issue was the Game of Thrones references because in episode 1 the actress was 16 year old (IRL) getting fake fucked but a 30+ year old man. 🤮🤢
My second issue was that the writing is style. It was immature at best.
Mmc was a disgusting pig. He banged 100s of women in 6 years. He lied to them and gave them false hope just to ghost them. It wasn't believable to me that he slept with hundreds of women and then boom, all of a sudden he was shy about checking MMC out.
FMC wasn't any better. I stopped at the beach scene where they were talking about all the men she banged during college.
Everyone made fun of Jett (side character) for not being a man whore, calling him flower. It didn't come off as teasing to me, more like bullying.
Beach scene: The quirk of Rae’s eyebrow told him he’d been caught. He let the smile break across his face, “I’m busted. I was staring at your legs and...zoned out.” He laughed shyly and handed her drink back. “You look great, Rae.” She looked away with a quiet laugh and muttered, “Thanks.” She seemed to muse to herself and bit her lip. After taking a long pull of her summer shandy she said, “I wouldn’t think someone who has one-nighters with supermodels would be speechless at the sight of some legs.” Oh. Ouch. He didn’t know why that felt like such a blow, but coming from Rae it did. With his teammates he’d have something cocky to say, something that would puff up his ego. But he suddenly found himself wanting to do the exact opposite of that with her.
“I know you’re not giving our boy shit about his sex life, Rae-Rae,” Chris said, popping the tab of his beer can. “Rumor has it you could’ve given him a run for his money in college.” Quinn turned slowly toward her, giving her a look as if to say “oh really?” Her mouth hung open as she tried to force her smile back and she gasped, “You traitor!” “Yeah, Rae,” Jett said, taking a swig of Labatt Blue as he plopped down on the last beach towel. “You are still in the double digits, right?” “Okay, that’s enough,” Rae said, just as Harry dropped the slobbery tennis ball in front of her. She picked it up and threw it at Jett. “I have not slept with a hundred guys. That’s gross.” “Oh, what are you at then? Ninety...eight?” Jett laughed, whipping the tennis ball down the shoreline. “No. We’re not having this discussion,” Rae said. “I’m surprised you’d even want to bring it up seeing as how embarrassing it is for you, Flower.”

Years later, Quinn is a All Star Pro Baseball player who's season has ended with a serious injury. After surgery he needs months of physical therapy to be prepared for the next season. Raelyn is one of the top physical therapists in her hometown and to her complete surprise her best friend steps back into her life! Sparks fly but are they prepared to work through issues that have held them back for years?
Hard Hitter is a sports romance, best friends to lovers, dual POV/Timeline book you get into and want to keep going to see how it ends! This book runs you through various emotions, one moment it's heartbreaking, the next your laughing and then your hot and bothered from the spiciness!! Really enjoyable read! Cant wait to get into my next Kaylee Losey book.
Thank you to Kaylee Losey and Hawthorne & Aster for a relaunch ARC of this book!
I will say, I love nothing more in a book than when the two characters get together almost immediately. Quinn and Rae rekindled their friendship almost immediately and Quinn’s determination not to let Raelyn slip through his fingers again has him declaring his intentions almost as fast.
3.5🌶️ because while their sexcapades weren’t super wild, they were frequent. And Quinn has a dirty, dirty mouth on him.
I really appreciate that this was clearly then working on their relationship. Quinn did stupid things, Rae did stupid things and they worked through them, communicated, figured out how to better handle things in the future.
I also really liked their current relationship juxtaposed against their past friendship.
There was… kind of a third act break up? But not totally. I liked it though.
One of my biggest issues with this book, though, was how easily Raelyn forgave him. They had been friends for about 11/12 years, BEST friends. Told each other everything, basically family kind of friends. And then Quinn just ghosted her for the next decade. And then he waltzes back into her life and she is his friend again almost instantaneously. I would have a hard time trusting that person again if it happened to me.
This I believe is my first sports romance and I got a chance to read a baseball one, how crazy since I rarely watch the sport. BUT I loved this story … it actually was good from beginning to end. I don’t know what I was expecting but I got sorrow, grief, friendship, rekindled flame, always meant to be, family … lost and found. All the makings of a great romance.
I mean from the moment Rae grabbed Quinn’s hand. Sure they let go but sometimes the second chance is better than the first. Sometimes people have to grow and live. And that’s what was proven here.
This is a story from 2 POVs and I loved the flashbacks - it helped us learn about the characters and their connection. Bc of the flashbacks and all the history the book did tend to be on the longer side (or at least longer than I’ve read in awhile) but it was written so beautifully. It didn’t feel like a waste, it truly made sense for the story and that’s why I was able to push on. It’s a true page turner.
I’m a romantic girlie and this one gave me all the feels. I’d actually read it again. If you like sports, sports romance, friends to lovers and second chances … this book is for YOU!
I enjoyed this book. The overall story line was fun, the history of all main charters, the past to present back and forth timeline, etc were all good! I just felt like there was a bit too much dialogue. There was too much introspective moments. I don’t know how to explain it. Each reflective moment hammered the already imbedded nail further into the wall if that makes sense. Like we get it, he loves her and doesn’t know if she feels the same and she loves him at the same time but doesn’t know if feelings are reciprocated. We get it, everyone knew they would end up together.
Also, the way they talked while in high school seemed a bit too wise and beyond their years. Another star would be deducted because of the miscommunication of the MCs at the end. It was too dramatic on the part of the FMC. She should have just marched to his room and demanded to know what happened. Anyway, I know a lot of people thrive on that kind of conflict and drama, whereas I don’t. So I’m not deducting a star for that because it is just my opinion.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was such a good sports romance! I really enjoyed reading this book and totally loved getting to know Quinn and Rae. This was actually my first baseball romance and I definitely want to read more now! The characters in this book are so fun and I liked that they had a lot of depth to them. The friends to lovers trope is one of my favorites, and I know it’s a popular one in general, so I definitely think anyone fond of those stories should read Hard Hitter. This is also a pretty spicy book so fans of smut will definitely enjoy it. One of my favorite things about this book though, was the Indian representation from literally the first page of the book. Even though Indian representation in adult romance is becoming more common, I still enjoy seeing it in books and it makes it more enjoyable for me. I definitely recommend this book to sports romance fans!
Friends to lovers, second chance romance, sports, and enough spice to set the world alight? Sign me up!
The portions that I enjoyed most during this story were the flashbacks and Quinn and Rae's discussions about their past. They didn't stray far from the current time, they were necessary, there was amazing build-up to certain points and I was so incredibly happy to see that insight. It brought them and their love to life.
I can also relate to this particular story so much in my own life currently, this was the perfect read! Not to mention these took place at a time when my significant other and I were the same ages as the main characters. It is always incredibly wonderful to be able to find pieces of yourself through the lenses of others.
Thank you so much for the incredible opportunity to read a copy of your book, Kaylee!
Hard Hitter by Kaylee Losey is a fast-paced, emotionally intense sports romance that delivers both heat and heart in equal measure. With sharp writing, lovable characters, and just the right amount of angst, Losey knocks it out of the park (get it, baseball romance?) in this compelling story. Losey does a fantastic job developing the chemistry between the leads—every moment between them crackles with tension, vulnerability, and deep connection. While the romance takes center stage, there's a well-balanced mix of humor, personal growth, and team camaraderie that rounds out the narrative beautifully. If you love sports romance with a touch of grit and a whole lot of steam, Hard Hitter should definitely be on your TBR list. Kaylee Losey brings heart, heat, and hope to the page, and fans of the genre won’t be disappointed.
Hard Hitter is a sweet, spicy and funny second chance love story that is captivating from the start. And did I mention spice?? It is off the charts!!!
Raelyn and Quinn were enthralling from the start. They each have depth and I love seeing that on the page. Each character is absolutely charming. Imagine what they could be like together?!? The key characters around the couple, they were divine!! Her dad is so fun and quirky :) Some of their friends really stand out throughout the book as well.
The novel is written in flashbacks throughout the book in perfect timing and I loved it!!! The author worked the past into the present seamlessly. This book was full of passion, anger, happiness and everything in between. This is a book to definitely make time to read. It’s worth it.
Oh. My. God. Quinn Casey the man that you are. I wasn’t sure going into this how to feel about dual timelines and well as dual POVs. I LOVED it though. Getting the backstory and progression of their relationships as teenagers as it ended up relating to current day? So exciting. The sex? Ooooooh boy. Rae is a very very lucky woman. I love that she knew what she wanted from sex. She embraced her sexual desires. The characters were so real, allowing us glimpses into their traumas and insecurities. Flawed characters are my favorite. Miscommunication trope is not necessarily my favorite but the way it was done, felt very true to real life. Estranged friends to lovers, he falls first, steamy sex? Yes please.
Hard Hitter was a charming book with great characters. Rae and Quinn become friends at 7 years old when she invites him to her party. She's the daughter of a wealthy family and Quinn is the poor boy being raised by a drug addicted mom. They are best friends growing up but never become a couple.
Quinn heads off to play in the major leagues and Rae becomes a successful physical therapist. Quinn's injury brings him back to his hometown to recuperate and hopefully reconnect with Rae.
The story was great and I liked how the books switches from current time to the past so you can see how they were as young friends.
I was given an advance reader copy to review - but the opinions and review are entirely my own.
When Quinn runs into his childhood flame at a physical therapy session, the timing couldnt be worse. Sidelined from the season due to an injury and family complications abound, he doesn't know if he has it in him to be open to love or rejection. Rae has a perfect life except for love and when she sees her best friend from years ago she decides to give it a shot, with some conditions... the chemistry is hot between the two but will it be enough? Or will feelings get in the way of a good time? This was a quick read in that it gripes you quickly and doesn't let go. Plenty of steamy sessions here for those who love that. A really good book.
I don't normally read romance. I usually can't get through a romance book, but Kaylee Losey is so amazing and so brilliant that I flew through this book. I absolutely loved it. This is the kind of book the word "unputdownable" was created for because it will keep you glued to every page until you've devoured them all!
The two main characters have instant chemistry that jumps off the page. They are also extremely well-drawn with depth that will make you fall in love with both of them. When I finished this book, I wanted to read it all over again. It left me breathless! I can't wait for more from Kaylee Losey. Get this today. You won't regret it!💯
Hard Hitter by Kaylee Losey was a fun and cute read! I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, and learning everything there is to learn about them. Sports romances have always been one of my favorites, and this one did not disappoint. Thank you for the chance to read this, and amazing job, Kaylee!
Quinn and Rae were so fun to get to know, and I absolutely loved their story. I still cannot get their story out of my head. I cannot wait for all you to meet these wonderful characters. Congratulations on your release, Kaylee! Go check out Hard Hitter by Kaylee Losey to meet Quinn and Rae.
Quin Casey is a MLB star who's also knows as a lady's man in the form of one night stands. Rae is his childhood best friend, AKA, the one that got away. When Quin us benched for the season due to injury, he is called home under family matters where he runs into Rae after a decade. It's clear that there is still chemistry between the two and this novel explores the relationship between these two. Love has never been on the table before, but it may be now.
This was a fun and romantic read. As much fun as it is to read a hockey romance, it was even better to finally read a MLB one. Love this read!!
