Book excerpts explaining the donut shop characters:

“Ruby is like your tough older sister.” - Bradley stated this. (Maggie’s biological son). Ruby is Maggie’s best friend and business partner of Dogwood Donuts.

“You better be glad that she isn’t here to hear you say that,” Maggie joked. “I don’t know if she’d hug you or whack you.” - (Maggie is the main character and amateur sleuth).
Bradley laughed. “And Orson is like your dear old dad. Myra is your much younger kid sister.” - Orson is an elderly codger who works at the donut shop, but has a soft spot for Myra and is generally nice to all donut shop employees. He also believes the donut shop would fall apart without him and everyone allows him to believe it. Myra was hired at the donut shop shortly after she was found sleeping in the alley behind the shop. She had been running from an abusive marriage. She is now married to Brooks, Chief of Police and currently in her third trimester of pregnancy. She and Brooks just bought a home and made sure to have enough extra room for Orson to live, too.

“Watch it,” Maggie said.
“And Jake is like another kid,” Bradley said. - (I believe Jake is a newer character and I cannot recall details about him except that he works in the donut shop, too, and he’s a nice “kid”.)

“What do you see Naomi as?” she asked. - (Naomi first appeared in the previous book and fit right into the Dogwood Donut family. She’s also who this book is about.)

“Another sister,” Bradley said. Maggie considered his words for a moment and nodded her head emphatically. “She is that, isn’t she?”

Then there’s Brett, the Sheriff. He is Maggie’s boyfriend.

Ending of book:

Said to Naomi - “No way,” Maggie said. She could feel the warmth of the whiskey down deep in her stomach. “We knew you weren’t a killer.”
“Okay, but you still came looking for me,” Naomi said. “That’s not crazy, Naomi,” Ruby said as she held her coffee mug up in the air. “Around here, that’s what we call family.”

I actually teared up about halfway through this due to the special bond the donut shop family has together and the lengths they sometimes have to go to in order to protect one another (usually during one of their murder investigations). Such a heartfelt read. I love this family. I wish these books were longer, but at the same time I like a book I can read quickly and still get meat from it.

Next is book 19 - One of Those Glaze

Maggie and Ruby's second shop was getting closer to being a reality as Maggie, Bradley and Jake worked on it, but another murder took Maggie's attention and brought about some good changes for Brett jobwise. The murder involved her new employee who Maggie and Ruby just knew wasn't a killer, but finding the real killer was gonna be tricky!

It wasn't so much as guessing whodunit since there weren't too many choices, but it's always fun seeing Maggie and Ruby do their sleuthing thing. Meanwhile, Grandpa Orson was taking his soon-to-be grandpa duties seriously and trying to keep Myra from working too hard. He's so darn curmudgeonly cute! I can't wait till she has that baby and he's like putty in its little fist, lol. Can't wait to borrow the next book on KU!

This is such a fun series and this book is one of the best yet. The mystery was well plotted and the story was well written as always. The characters are so real, with quirks both good and bad. I never feel like they are too good to be true. One thing is clear and that is the true affection and love they have for each other.

The second donut shop is almost ready to open and Maggie is working alongside her son to make sure everything is in order to ensure it’s a success. That doesn’t stop her or Ruby the new council woman from investigating the latest mystery in their town!

Meet Your Batch (18)

This story was just a little bit scary! I can't imagine being hunted down by a couple who believe they were being lied to. These people believed that there was money being held by the daughter of a man that was killed! They wouldn't take NO for an answer! Instead they stalked the daughter and made her so scared she went into hiding!
